I tried the no-buy trend for a year - here’s how it affected me.

  • To clarify on some of the topics in the video: not every month of the year was no-buy, some of them were low-buy months with a maximum budget of $75. But on the whole I tried to never go over $40-50/pm :)
I almost made this video month ago without thinking much about it, but scrapped the idea because I thought it was an irrelevant topic - now I’ve been noticing people talk more about the anti-influencing, de-influencing, the no-buy trend, and low-buy trends like the 75 hard style challenge. The conversation around consuming and shopping less is becoming more prominent, and I wanted to tell you guys about my experience as a frugal person who budgets every month. Whether it’s fashion, date nights, or shopping for anything really, due to my life circumstances I’ve had to completely change the way I live and operate. These changes are both internal and external, so if you want to find out if you should try these anti-consumption trends, stick around for the whole video :)

Hi all! First of all, thank you so much for the kind comments and the support, it means so much to me 💕

I try to do something similar as well, but I've noticed that it's harder for me to spend less when it's winter. The weather is gloomy, I don't feel like socializing, and I just spend more time going through online shops. 😵 I barely buy anything during the summer, maybe it compensates for my winter shopping sprees. 😅

I agree, winter is one of the toughest times to not consume, and I'm feeling it at the moment too 🥲 Right now I'm trying to combat overspending by watching free movies on UA-cam (there's actually a lot of good movies via youtube movies) and planning some spring outfits. Winter is my least favorite season because it's so cold and I don't like being outdoors when it's gray skies and minus degrees (even though I'm from Finland haha). I'd rather sip some tea at home. 🍵 I'll be making a transitional winter to spring outfit video hopefully soon, so hopefully that can motivate us both in our spending & styling goals ❤

The losing friends thing is something I didn't think about, but it's true. Some only want to hang out for an excuse to eat out/go for drinks, etc. I am not completely guilt-free in that regard, either. There are friends I only bother to see in person if we're eating or seeing a movie.
I am working on my buyer's remorse... I am very easily influenced. There's a lot of clothing I have purchased thinking I would love it until I realized it was great for selfies but not actually wearing... As a cosplayer, I have a bad habit of hoarding clothes not for me but for a character, too. Eeesh. My closet and dresser are always a disaster, and it seems like every good purge is followed by a bunch of little shopping sprees that fill it right back up. I am definitely trying to buy less, as I find I have less and less disposable income as well as space, so I am going to use your video as inspiration! >

With regards to friendships, I'm also guilty of having friends I only see to do activities with! In my case though, I noticed that I often got accidentally attached to them, and I'd end up wanting more out of the friendship than either signed up for. It's why I think I mostly only should have a few very good friends instead of many brunch buddies. 😊
I'm glad this video is helping you out! I strongly recommend watching my personal style vs trends video (ua-cam.com/video/0GdxbY0nfzQ/v-deo.html) for help with getting easily influenced, there's some habits and patterns of thought you can build to manage it. 🥰 I actually really wanted to cosplay when I was younger, but I didn't have the budget for it haha. The closest I've ever done is a budget friendly halloween costume of Tifa from Final Fantasy 7. But I've heard it can be a tough/expensive hobby to have because of the expenses and buildup in clothes/accessories.

I need to have a monthly amount to spend, like your $75! I spend too much and keep messing up my savings 😞

(Looking at your background) Miyazaki also had a pretty hardcore anti-consumerist views (you could probably sense them from his films)

I have huge respect for both Miyazaki's works & his takes on consumerism (and most recently also on other matters like AI)! I love that he's refused to change the way he makes his films to fit modern standards and allows the production to take as long as necessary.

Fantastic lipstick! I know this is all about not consuming but could you share the brand and color name?

Wow Jemi this video resonates so deeply with me! I am such a consumer and a deal with buyers remorse constantly. I wanna be more mindful of what I purchase and make sure it actually sparks joy before I “add to cart”. Thank you for sharing your journey and advice, I can’t wait for your next video! 🤍✨

I'm so glad this video was helpful to you! I'm far too familiar with buyer's remorse, and it's been refreshing to deal with it way less, but I still sometimes fall victim to it haha. 🥲 If you don't already have a really well defined personal style, I suggest also watching my personal style vs trends video ( ua-cam.com/video/0GdxbY0nfzQ/v-deo.html ) to help you form habits that prevent you from getting influenced into buying things and getting buyers remorse. Identifying my personal style better has definitely helped with all of these matters ❤

Auuu killing the intro again! This vid really inspired me to think about more things i can do with friends for less money!

    • @jemi_
      @jemi_  7 місяців тому +1

Can you tell the intros have become one of my favorite parts to edit these days hehe 💞 And yes 100% recommend coming up with different activities that don't necessarily include money - for me, I like to go to parks (and sometimes do picnics), free museums, or explore a new place with my friends 🥰

This video was very insightful! I wanna buy some clothes that I actually like, and not because it’s trending!

Thank you so much! 🥰 100% with you, it's so easy to feel like you like something that's trending (because everyone else likes it too), but if you stop and think about it, it most likely isn't something that aligns with your personal style anyways 🫢
