I like that pinterest is more about the outfit and creativity than someone’s lifestyle or likes (especially compared to other social media) - at least that’s how I perceive it. I definitely bought some things off of pinterest and was influenced to buy similar pieces from outfits I pinned. Some filled a gap in my wardrobe others not so much. I think pinterest can also be really helpful for finding different ways to style and wear things you already have but it can also suck you in and make you believe that you don’t have anything nice to wear, that’s why I frequently take breaks from it.
Yes, absolutely, this is why I think Pinterest thrives as a source of outfit inspiration! I feel like instagram and Tiktok still have the attachment of "you gotta have an expensive lifestyle" because they're social apps (and eventually people will showcase their personal lives a bit too). I think taking frequent breaks is definitely healthy, I find myself second guessing my style if I see too many styles and outfits that differ from my actual preferences - like I think I genuinely would love mary jane sneakers, but I had to get off Pinterest and really evaluate on whether or not they'd fit with the rest of the pieces in my closet and if I'd wear them out.
I don't think I've bought anything specifically from Pinterest, but I do get influenced by aesthetics. Sometimes it's good, and helps me find my personal style over time. Cottagecore helped me realise I like wearing long skirts. My fashion board at the moment is mostly expensive-looking dresses that I have no intention of wearing, I just like looking at them! PS: your editing style is really pretty
I feel you on the "expensive dresses I'm not gonna wear", I have a very long "when I actually have money" shopping list consisting mostly of very pretty dresses - though I'd probably wear them out anyways, I wore one of my favorite fancy dresses to IKEA yesterday 🤭 And thank you so much, I've been trying to spend some more time recently to curate a specific feel to each video's editing style, I'm glad someone is noticing! 🥺❤
I know this isn’t the point of the video but just wanted to say that, tho i do enjoy Pinterest and it’s a calming environment for me vs. the rest of the platforms, I don’t think it is as “Edit: HARMLESS” as people usually say. One of the things that I hate the most about Pinterest is the lack of context and how easy it is for fishy content to spread, like diet stuff and “do this to make your waist smaller” kind of posts. Also really bad skincare and sometimes bad workout advice. I know we’re supposed to be mindful and analytic when consuming content overall but it’s just so easy, specially for a young impressionable audience, to see a post on Pinterest and think “wow this is totally true I’m gonna risk my physical health trying these exercises and recipes to match the beauty standard”
Yes, Pinterest is definitely less emotionally/socially draining than the other platforms because it's not built for that! I've also noticed that in addition to the lack of context, it's pretty easy for people to steal pictures from other creators/artists etc. I definitely feel bad for the younger generations because everything is about selling something to them or influencing them, basically keeping them convinced they'll never be/look good enough. And adding AI pictures of actually nonexistent models online makes it so much worse. To make matters worse, referring back to my "we assume what's said/shown online to be reality", I think society really is starting to lose sight of those critical thinking skills etc. Maybe it's just wishful thinking but I hope that eventually we can also begin to break the whole concept of beauty standards or "ideal" anything.
Great video :), I would like to add that goth and punk aren't styles/aestethics, they're subcultures. I get if you're not interested in theses most of the times you won't really know, but I think it reduces them to surface-level visuals, ignoring their deeper cultural/ideological significance. Theses subcultures are rooted in resistance to mainstream norms, treating them as simple fashion choices erases the social critique that they bring. I feel like this oversimplification reduces them by monetizing them for consumer culture/trends.
Thank you for clarifying that! I wasn't sure if I can use the word "subculture" (I'm not a native speaker, so wasn't sure if you can use it in context of fashion as well), I appreciate whenever anyone can help correct me or find the right words and phrases 🥰 I've definitely noticed the issue of oversimplifying subcultures etc, it's a big reason why I stopped making analysis videos on "aesthetics" back in the day.
@@jemi_ I'm not an expert but I think you can talk about fashion inside of subcultures bc there's obviously this aspect. But we need to remind people this is far from the only aspect there is to a subculture : political views/music/etc.. are important ! Anyways, thanks for responding & explaining your point of view and have a beautiful day/night :)
ahh I love Pinterest so much. It’s definitely one of the kinder social medias (maybe not to our wallets tho😂). I love finding inspiration, but sometimes I also get burnt out always looking at new items. A double edged sword for sure! You deserve so many more views, your vids are always so informative!❤
I love Pinterest too, it's a shame that for me it can so easily turn from inspiration to dissatisfaction with my own style if I stay on the app too long😩 And thank you so much! 🥹💕 I really enjoyed making this video 😊
the funny thing is i've tricked my pinterests bc I'm an artist so I've saved a VARIETY of clothes for when I'm ready to practice drawing different styles and fabrics. Not only that, I'm a writer first and formost even before I got serious about art. So I was looking at fashion pictures for my characters since the beginning
That's soooooo freaking cool!! ❤That must be such a fun way to get inspiration for your characters' outfits, I always wondered about the different creative processes for writers, I have so much respect for all the work and effort that goes into getting the stories from our mind onto paper.
Thank you so much! ❤Oh yeah, Pinterest definitely both inspires, and makes us feel dissatisfied with our personal styles! I found myself feeling much more secure in my personal style when I quit social media for a few months, and definitely recommend it for anyone who's feeling like they're getting lost with their style! Pinterest is a good source for outfit recreation, but unfortunately we can't ignore its consumerist sides...
I've never bought anything from Pinterest. I don't know if it's only me that feels this way, but oftentimes I feel that I already "own" something if I've pinned it on Pinterest. It seems like putting an image into a folder is enough for me most of the time, and I don't feel like I need to own the thing outside of that folder. Is that weird? But - I do get influenced by the styles and outfits I see, so I might thrift something inspired by an image on Pinterest, or I will knit something I see on Pinterest. Often I use it to get inspo to style clothes I already own in my closet. I've noticed that many of the outfits and styles are, like you say, not really realistic, so I've been documenting what I wear and how I feel in those outfits during the day, and then making some kind of a capsule wardrobe out of the things I'm already wearing based on this. I don't want to feel like I'm wearing a costume, I want to feel like myself in the clothes.
I've never bought anything directly off of pinterest, but it has definitely introduced me to new brands or products I've put on my wishlist (but tbh most of the stuff marketed on Pinterest is expensive from the get-go) - I don't think it's weird that you're content with saving the image! I think it's a pretty natural way of filtering our likes and dislikes, and especially those of us who are frugal, it's a good "this'll do" way of admitting liking something, and finding a more sustainable way to apply it to our lives. It's so cool that you're documenting your outfits! I'm not quite at that stage yet, but I've definitely noticed which pieces I wear the most often now that I get out of the house all the time. I'm so happy you've found a way that works for you ❤
I just started using pinterest for fashion inspo after watching your personal style video. i’d used it for apartment inspo but never for clothes. so far it’s ok, i see a lot more things i like on other people than things i would want for myself. but that’s still good data! i’ll continue to like, subscribe, and share so hopefully you can get your sneakers soon ❤
Glad I could guide you to that source of inspiration! It's definitely a "observe what you actually like" kind of space, but I find that if I know my personal style well, I can convert the "I need to dress like them" mindset to "I can use this idea to make something new out of what I already own" - kind of like when artists get introduced to new ways of crafting, it's something they can choose to add to go with their style. Thank you so much for the support thus far (& I hope one day I get to showcase a pair of prettified sneakers on this channel)!🥹💕
as someone who's sworn off buying new-produced(?) clothes unless for a specific cause, i have never been swayed to buy something from pinterest. if i get better economy i might order custom-/hand-made things online someday. but i love browsing pinterest for outfit combo inspiration and specific garment sewing/modifying ideas.
I envy you, I swear pinterest whispers to my brain like "hey maybe you should buy this type of item too" sometimes, but me and my empty wallet have gotten good at not getting too convinced - instagram gets me worse though, I think, especially if a brand I really like promotes a sale, then I gotta start having internal debates about want vs need vs afford 🥲
I've noticed this is a thing! I used to look up dancing poses/posture when I liked drawing my characters in the past, though now I use pinterest almost exclusively for baking recipes and outfits! What kind of artist are you, if I may ask? :)
Omg do you mean THE Aurora (singer)?! 🥹 I freaking LOVE her, she's the most whimsical artist out there, I love the way she sings and voices her thoughts.
Pinterest introduced me to corduroy pants and I wanted to thrift a pair ever since, but they were always in sizes that are too small for me. Now that I've had years to think about those pants... I don't think I could pull them off with the rest of the clothes in my wardrobe, and what i really liked about them was that they were always part of whimsical outfits.
Sounds like the pants eventually became a "bridge" to find more whimsical outfits! Sometimes not having access to the clothes we see repeatedly online is a blessing in disguise too haha - I wish I hadn't tried to be a balletcore girly last year, the wrap skirts did not flatter me or stay on me properly at all 🥲
You're not wrong! There's several reasons why they eventually get global recognition. This gives me The Devil Wears Prada flashbacks to the scene where they discuss how fashion spreads and where it originates from :)
Funny thing, when I started on Pinterest I only really pinned pretty outfits I had no reason to wear, then Pinterest started showing me wearable versions of them which made me happy (made my bank account sad though)
That's like the most ideal outcome when it comes to your Pinterest feed! 💕But yes, our bank accounts cry whenever we open the app - mine just laughs at me cuz it knows I can't afford anything I admire 🥲😅
