For decluttering I started asking myself, “What insecurity did this product promise to address? Did it fix it?” If not, then I don’t feel guilty about getting rid of it. For my low buy I am asking myself, “What insecurity am I trying to fix with this? Is there something else I can do instead?”
I put an ugly cardboard box in my bathroom with all the products I don't want to use. I really want to get rid of the ugly box but to do so I need to use out what is in it. I did it a month ago and this box is already half empty! I am so happy with every empty container I throw away from this box. It also reminds me while I go shopping for some new cosmetics how hard it was to use out the products I thought I will love but ended up forgetting about and feeling guilty I even bought them. This really helped me to rethink my spends on cosmetics.
Changing the framing from low/no buy to 1) being a conscience consumer, 2) thinking about storage space, 3) recent purchases and 4) seeing if I have something similar (doesn't have to be an exact dupe) in my collection has helped tremendously. Once I made these the keypoints of my makeup buying habits AND NOT the low/no buy rules from other people on the internet, I've had more success with buying less but still buying what I want.
“I want to stop sacrificing muy goal of owning a home for makeup”. 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮 Wow these are the words that’ll make me have success in my No Buy 2023. I thank you sooooo much.
Very insightful. I think this speaks to why I respect Hannah Louise Poston so much - she did a whole year no-buy, and at the end of it, she didn’t continue the no-buy. She changed the parameters of her purchase-focused project in order to teach herself how to shop and buy responsibly, as you stated. Thank you for the food for thought.
there is this term called the last supper phenomenon. this referring to eating a ton or binging right before a planned fast or the initiation of restrictive eating. I do this with makeup spending. I plan to reduce my spending but I have to hurry up and buy everything (use up all my Ulta and Sephora points), and wait for the “best sales” like Black Friday and clearance holiday sets before I start this time of makeup purchasing restriction. Great video! Great reflections!

@@shawnaripari I find it's the same when people talk about keeping a budget. It's supposed to work for you, like a no/low-buy should. If it's not working, change it! The all or nothing approach doesn't work. I think your comparison to dieting was spot on.
💯 💯 On week 1 of my low/no buy, I was feeling great because my thoughts around making purchases started to shift for the better. On week 2, I started feeling guilty because I bought a couple things on my pre-determined list of allowed items and thought “maybe I’m not being strict enough?” This video is a great reminder that the whole point (for me at least) is not only to spend less, but mainly to be more intentional with my spending!
Yes, I found that a consistent minimal life is more manageable than a strict no buy for a period. That means you'll always think thru a purchase, and yet not beat yourself up for needing and getting something you'll use.
Thank you for this video! 18 days into the “crash diet” no buy, I caved and bought something. This was the video I needed to remind myself that it’s not over and I can keep going. I am going to amend my plans for better sustainability.
I love the diet analogy! I am planning to embark on a low buy year and was thinking about what I might need to stock up on in advance before it starts! When I used to engage in dieting, if I'd slipped up I would typically have an all out splurge and eat all my forbidden foods before starting again in the morning. It shares a lot of similarities.
I just started a no buy three weeks ago. I really appreciate your note to not take small missteps as reasons to give up on the overall goal. My first two weeks, I bought things on my no buy list and was so discouraged! I appreciated a viewer's comment on my video to give myself some slack. I'm going into the third week so much more positively, and still committed to my goal. Thank you for your kind, grounded encouragement!
I'm on a no buy this year and I've decided to use my weaknesses to help me stay on the low buy. I am, essentially, lazy. If I want to buy any new makeup, I will first need to calculate the total value of that category that I already own and convince myself that this item will add something to my collection. If I can do this, I will still need to wait 2 weeks until I can buy it. We'll see how it goes but I'm already exhausted just thinking about it.
Omg yes!!! As someone who's recovering from an ED i can attest to your analogy being hundred percent valid!!!!! I lost my father to covid last year in April and I've been on a terrible shopping spree. It's gotten so out of control. I've always been very frugal not because I've been intentional with my purchases but because I had little to no disposable income. I just really need to be pragmatic ofc and not shop for my perfectly happy, successful fantasy self.
I'm so glad this video resonated with you but I'm also really sorry to hear about your loss and the difficult year you've had. I'm over here rooting for you Rumaal! 💕
I’m doing a no buy (I guess technically a low buy) where I can buy myself a purse on my birthday (in September) and Christmas. I can only use the money that I have saved up that is left over from my weekly cash budget. I’m just focusing on recalibrating my shopping habits. I have a whole calendar with motivations and I earn a sticker for every day that I don’t buy something non essential 😂 I am excited about it. I already have my one sticker up 🥹 Looking forward to the content on your channel to help keep me going. But I feel really good about it overall. I have more than enough, and I am planning on taking my things out and looking at them all at once when I want to buy something new. I did that with my purses and it really helped out things into perspective.
Your videos are excellent and compelling. I haven’t broken my no buy and I’m not going to. My relationship with money has led me to gates of hell frankly. I cannot have 1 more bad year. Thank you 😊 👍
This was such a great video, Shawna. Especially the difference between having a generic why or reason and the one that you presented about owning a house. Right now I would like to spend my time doing other things besides looking for things to buy or shopping. I wear minimal makeup and realized that my hobby wasn’t makeup but was buying makeup. A lot of what a I have is old and expired and barely used. I would like to actually use what I have instead of buying more just to try and then only using that item once or twice. My end goal is to have a much more edited amount of NON EXPIRED makeup that zi am actually using.
Yes! I've found that since I changed up my why it's helped to stop me in my tracks! I really appreciate the goal you set for yourself too! It's really insightful into your own habits. I'm definitely rooting for you!
@@shawnaripari Thanks! I have joined you on having a minimal makeup basket for the month as well. So far it has been great and I have been getting more use out of the few products that I chose and am finishing up a concealer as well!
I love this view of personalizing the low buy to work for you! The purist mentality is so real. A full year is daunting, but having regular breaks makes it feel more doable. I'm experimenting with different boundaries to find what works best for me (2 months on & one week off? Wait 30 days before making purchases to see if I still want them?) So far I've done 3 weeks no-buy and it's feeling pretty unsustainable as-is
The nuance on your channel is just what I've been wishing existed for years. I have a zero based budget over 23 bank accounts, 22 of which are sinking funds. I also budget spending money, and I can guilt free spend that money because I save nearly half my income. However I do have an impulse buying problem & when I'm stressed or emotional I pop the spending cork & go nuts & set myself back a lot. So in a no-spend, all I'd actually be saving is my spending money which isn't much. It's more about teaching me the skills to say no to purchases that aren't actually in my best interests - like a whole new wardrobe for the next new person I want to be every three months. Saving my spending money is a bonus but not necessary.
My biggest issue is that I use things like shopping and snacking to deal with being bored, and I am also trying to get my makeup hoard down to manageable and get my body fitter. I have these habits for how I usually self stimulate, to the point that the Amazon app or my pantry will already be open before I realize what I'm doing. The newest app redesign on Amazon (I hate it so much) has been the biggest help for stopping this behavior. I guess I just have to make my hinges squeakier on the pantry or something to interrupt my habit there, too. It took a lot of different factors and a lot of emotions and a lot of time to get to this point, both with my makeup hoard and my body, and will take a lot of times of making better decisions for myself consistently over a long while to get it to a point where I am comfortable with both the hoard and my body. I really related to your diet analogy, can you tell? 😄
My plan for until I feel like I have worked through a few items in my hoard is to only buy replacements of items I don't have anything else that will work for. And replacements can be an issue for me sometimes, because it is hard to buy just the thing I need from e.l.f. or Miss A on their websites, instead of using that purchase as an excuse to fill up a cart. If I just pick up the thing I need in person at Wal Mart or Ulta, I can just run in and grab what I need without going off my list, but shopping online it is so much harder to do this. And I don't want to do this for the money. I want to do this because I see myself using shopping as a way to deal with being bored or to cover my feelings, and I want to form better habits for feeling my feelings and doing activities that enrich my life when I am just bored than to just mindlessly consume.
I really like this plan and I definitely get what you mean! I've fallen into this too when buying online, especially when I buy from a drugstore, shoppers, they're kind of like ulta and offer products you can really get elsewhere except a brand website and I'll buy things to hit the $50 spend minimum. I'm glad the analogy resonated with you and hear you on the eating / being at the cupboard almost without realizing 😂 You seem really insightful about your habits and what you'd like to work on! I love that for you!
Thank you for this video! I am on a 3 month no buy and I started early on November 29th and have only made 1 purchase since then, I want to keep going until at least April 1st and then I will reevaluate at that point. Every day I don't make a purchase I find it easier and easier which is great. I know my why is that 1. I want to own less 2. I want to set myself up financially for my future 3. I want to start a family and 4. Me and my fiance are getting married in Feb 2023 so I need to save for that because marrying him means more to me than any makeup item ever could. I think I am going to screenshot this comment so I can look back at it in those moments of temptation.
I needed to hear this, thank you! I love your diet analogy. I am changing my low-buy mindset to how can I change my habits to foster long-term sustainability. this was the information I needed
I think it’s important to give yourself the opportunity to buy things otherwise I think we’ll go crazy 😛 I myself, have created a buy list of 5 items that I’d like to buy throughout the year. Some of them are a higher price point so once I’ve saved the money for the item I will then buy it. I am also allowing myself to buy replacement skin care, hair care and make up as they are necessities for me but I cannot buy anything new that isn’t already in my routine. I will (hopefully) find pleasure in buying the necessities that I need and like to use. I have however, given me strict rules around buying new clothing this year. In my list, I have 1 clothing item and I will buy that and hopefully that will be the only clothing piece. I will buy clothing if something needs replacing, like a pair of jeans, but there will be no impulse or unplanned purchases for me this year ☺️
I’m very much in favor of tailoring a no buy/low buy to suit you. I’ve thought about doing one for the past 2 years and never did it because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to finish. Then I sorta realized…I don’t have to do exactly what everyone else is doing. I want to challenge myself but not set myself up for failure, and the same approach may not work for me. We don’t all have the exact same issues with money, either, so it’s important to address your own habits, not somebody else’s. The diet analogy was a really good one!
I definitely agree that you/we should make low buys and no buys work for us. You're right that a standard approach doesn't help each of us change the habits that apply to us!
I’m 2 days into my no buy. The urge creeps up every time I watch a beauty content. I need to call unsubscribe from beauty content. At least for a while.
My birthday is in February!! I feel so called out lol 😂 Actually before deciding to do a no buy year, I had already planned a shopping trip/spree for my birthday in February using my Christmas money I just got in 2021. Since its budgeted to me only spending what I got for Christmas and since I got that money in 2021 I feel like I'm not breaking my no buy year. But I hope looking forward to shopping then isn't the only thing keeping me on track now.
My birthday is in February as well! I am doing a no buy year except that I am allowed to spend my Ulta point money for my birthday so that I use it before it expires, I can get something nice, and take advantage of the birthday month perks. I am only allowed to spend that and money from the TJ Max gift card that I got for Christmas but I think I will save that until later since I have the Ulta points to use in February.
Also I made a shopping list for this birthday spree. There were 12 specific items on my list BUT since committing to my no buy year, I’ve gotten my list down to 6 items.
Old video, but I think having a more short term why can be really helpful. I want a home, but it seems like a false comparison that it's between a coffee habit or home ownership. Sort of silly, but I've been breaking my low buy savings into specific costs which may come up with housing, like this $1000 is for the paperwork, this $500 is for the water heater, this $300 is for the first heating bill, this $25 is for a shoe rack etc.. basically zero dollar budgeting but specifically within the home ownership category of savings. Because it's so far away it helps me meet milestones and see progress earlier. I'd suggest having a gradual growing list of things - they don't even need to be real per se, just representative of potential (ex. A fridge even though many homes come with a fridge). Then in my budgeting app (I used Beyond Budget) I get to see these more tangible smaller categories grow. I do the same thing for any big purchases that are 5-20 years out.
I recently started a “diet”/budget to pay for a larger purchase, braces, in the next 6 months. I have to spend no money til june, and even then I’ll still be short. Keep in mind I’m referring to my disposable income. It was recently my birthday and it sucked the joy out of it cuz I couldn’t buy myself any spontaneous birthday gifts. I’ve wanted braces to fix my teeth for a long time but once half this year is over, it’ll be done. I’m looking to have a payment plan or something so I can still buy things I normally do (repair a cosmetic side of like getting new clothes or getting a new phone case) bc this is not sustainable or fun. I feel like a high schooler again, when I had no money to spend on things I wanted/needed.
I can understand how you feel, and I also think we're allowed to feel the way we feel and should honor that/allow that. I do have a suggestion for a reframe if you're interested. Braces are going to be expensive and you mentioned you wanted them for a long time. What if you considered the braces your birthday gift to yourself. It's the ultimate gift, it's years in the making, and hopefully you'll love how things turn out in the end! This is the year you're choosing to give yourself this gift. You could in theory not get braces, but there's a reason you want them, and value this decision.
Great video as usual!I'm so glad you talked about the amounts of low buys. Each person has a different monetary ceiling and each person may not have a problem with the money aspect, but it may be the number of products they buy. For some people they will take $20 and buy 20 $1palettes whereas a person with a 4k budget make only buy 5 palettes in a year but they were more expensive, it varies from person to person. No buys and low buys are so personal I think it is really low brow for anyone to voice negative views simply because they feel they can versus to understand or provide beneficial feedback for the creator. I decided to do a low buy this year and I'm terrified! I just posted my video and I really hope I dont get negative nancys because my "rules" seem different than most others. Two thumbs up....it's about being able to stick to something and make positive changes longterm not put urself in a prison and beat urself up for any mis-step.❄
Yes I totally agree especially with the last part of your comment about making it work for you to make lasting changes. I'm definitely rooting for you and congratulations on posting your video! It's easy to say don't worry about the potentially negative comments but certainly harder to do. I know I've put myself in a proverbial prison of worry before. I love that you're making the decisions that are right for you !
I’m loving your videos! They are so helpful, & I like the way you explain things. You give me time to go through the mental motions of what you are presenting. You are very articulate, & I enjoy hearing your thoughts! 😀
I’m new here, feel like it’s my first AA meeting or in our case SA meeting 😃…Trying to shift my addiction from lux youtube and shopping to no buy UA-cam and no shopping year- my goal is 7 months to hit some financial targets. I do find it interesting how most peoples drug of choice was makeup…for me it is handbags, clothes (high end purchases that add up very quickly due to price point) 😞. Your videos are great and very motivating…in my case shopping was about filling the void created by covid, trying to make myself feel normal and sure enough I went overboard …
In going to be rooting for you Ana! I'm glad my videos have been helpful 👍👍 I also find it interesting how many people go to makeup. Mine has been clothes too
I am on the same journey Ana. Handbags and other high end items that I don’t need… like you, Covid compounded my shopping problem. Although I don’t want anyone else to struggle, it is nice to know I’m not alone.
@@sophiep9938 I’m so glad to see you saying hello :)! I knew there were more of us lux rehab people out there :)…it will be a challenge but we can do this! My goal is not to say good bye to the things I love but just be more balanced and thoughtful in the future and this no buy I’m hoping will set me up for that ..being addicted and frivolously spending is soul sucking…
I understand what you are saying perfectly. Before I found You Tube, my makeup fit into one makeup bag. I always loved makeup. I purchased expensive products. I went into Sephora, occasionally. The sales associate sought me out and I always used his or her expertise. They typically recommended Dior. I bought a few expensive products and that is it. I only returned when I needed replacements.
I am on my first no-buy (two weeks in). What is helping me is "What alternative do I have if I don't buy x?" (this is if I need something for a current project/commitment).
You've really hit the nail on the head when you compare a no buy to a diet. I've crashed and burned hard in previous years because It was too restrictive for me. I'd binge buy everything as a result of restricting myself not only in what I was purchasing, but also what I was using with strict project panning. Boredom would kick in, and then i'd binge buy new things. Overall, through much thinking and trial and error over the last 6 years, my success came when I made the decision that rather than just not buying anything, I want to become a conscious consumer. I don't want to just impulse buy items, but I want to really think about an item before I purchase it. Basically if I couldn't dupe an item or replicate the effect using something i already own, it was a unique product, and as such I could purchase it after a period of time if I wanted to. This has been really beneficial as i've purchased less, and my numbers have significantly dropped last year where I was rotating and playing with what I already own after products hit an all time high, and getting to know what I owned rather than just letting it sit in a drawer. As such, I decluttered quite a lot, because a lot of things i figured out I didn't actually like, or they no longer suited my preferences. I'm still hoping to downsize quite a lot, but i'm at the point where I love what I have, and if i'm bringing something new in it's generally a well thought out purchase.
A lot of inspirational/self-help content focuses too much on perfection whether that's eating "clean" or only owning a certain number of things or budgeting/no-buy/conscious consumerism content. To me that's very bland and unappealing. I actually really enjoy your content because you're true to yourself and reflect on your struggles, instead of hidding them. There are tons of great tips for successful no-buys on yt and other places, but you really have to have a deep understanding of your shopping behaviours and emotional relationship to stuff to actually implement them. I think a lot of people who identified shopping as a problem in their life would benefit from tracking they shopping behaviour first, reflecting on that data and constructing rules based on that reflection, instead of jumping into a no-buy as a quick fix to their problem.
I'm really glad my content resonates with you Pia! I do also agree with what you've said including tracking your spending first. I did this when i went on my no buy in 2020 (i tracked for all of january and some of feb and came on yt at the end of feb). I know i certainly had ideas about how i spent but they weren't all true. Also, i know a lot of people, including myself, have said i don't overspend in X category so no need to limit it or track it ect. I personally have found that when i took away my main over-shopping areas i went to things i ordinarily wouldn't. BUT also in 2021 emotional spending reared it's head. The category was almost irrelevant because it wasn't a thing a drove me to spend like seeing a sweater i liked but an emotion. Knowing that, especially in a "tracking"stage before a no buy would go a long way for me.
I broke my no buy I was trying to do last year, I made a video about going on a low/no buy and then the abh norvina vol 5 came out, and right after boxy did and abh takeover box which I purchased soley for the palette. I also bought the rest of the abh norvina volumes and a ND palette that went on sale... This year I have decided to go on a low buy and so far its going okay I bought a palette not long ago but no other makeup.... I think I am gonna just try to not buy as much, but bring in a couple random new things ( for now I have decided only 1 beauty related purchase per month seeing as there isnt really anything I absolutely need so that may help I think...)
I failed big time and had to ask my mom for a loan because I planned a trip overseas... I probably have undiagnosed ADHD. I need my family to stop encouraging me to buy things, too.
On a side note, for most people all sorts of weightloss is unsustainable no matter how "healthily" it was achieved. Our body weight usually fluctuates between a genetically predetermined range called the set weight. For some people it's on the higher end of the weight spectrum and others land on the skinnier end. Habit change is a way out of the excess weight that one has put on due to say mental illnesses like depression, anxiety, etc but it's tricky thrte as well since thr body is now used to weighing more so losing weight will only make your body distrustful of the food resources around it and thus resist all forms of fat loss and instead work on storing fat for a period of starvation.
For decluttering I started asking myself, “What insecurity did this product promise to address? Did it fix it?” If not, then I don’t feel guilty about getting rid of it. For my low buy I am asking myself, “What insecurity am I trying to fix with this? Is there something else I can do instead?”
Oh yes I love this Brook!! 👏👏👏

Yes ! I love to hear that. We're starting off 2022 strong
This is a great video, very insightful and wise. Thank you, so much.
Thanks for saying this! I’m on a 6 months no buy… but I bought something yesterday on day 15, soooo self reflecting but keeping on going
YES Amanda! 🙌
I love this view of personalizing the low buy to work for you! The purist mentality is so real.
A full year is daunting, but having regular breaks makes it feel more doable. I'm experimenting with different boundaries to find what works best for me (2 months on & one week off? Wait 30 days before making purchases to see if I still want them?) So far I've done 3 weeks no-buy and it's feeling pretty unsustainable as-is
Yes kai! You make it work for you to help your no buy be something you can stick too! I'm loving your spirit and desire to experiment
I'm glad the analogy resonated with you and hear you on the eating / being at the cupboard almost without realizing 😂
You seem really insightful about your habits and what you'd like to work on!
Yes Eden 👏 this all sounds amazing and the screenshot sounds like a great ide
I needed to hear this, thank you! I love your diet analogy. I am changing my low-buy mindset to how can I change my habits to foster long-term sustainability. this was the information I needed
I think it’s important to give yourself the opportunity to buy things otherwise I think we’ll go crazy 😛
I myself, have created a buy list of 5 items that I’d like to buy throughout the year.
Glad you're making that decision Juliana!
That does sound like a good plan! I would love to know how it goes
I like your creative way to figure out a solution that works for you !
@@shawnaripari Thank you! Hopefully it will work!
Thank you so much Denise!
I'm glad my videos have been helpful 👍👍
I also find it interesting how many people go to makeup.
What is helping me is "What alternative do I have if I don't buy x?" (this is if I need something for a current project/commitment).
this is my first video of yours and I already love this channel ❤
Thank you so much Makayla! I'm glad to have you here 💕
This was great - thank you for sharing!
I'm really glad this video resonated with you, especially the diet metaphore. It sounds like you've been on a journey and have learned A LOT!
@@shawnaripari I definitely have! And I’m still learning. 😊 I don’t think that will stop anytime soon. Lol
I have started a no buy year so I am interested to see what you have to say!
I hope something from the video resonates with you!
Daily tally of spending. Daily journal of thoughts and feelings.
I'll never even lie to myself and go in a no buy😂However, I'm going to attempt a low buy. My collection is insane!
Best of luck on your low buy!
I am binging watching Shawna, instead of Amazon must haves by Brittany Vasseurs. I am trying to get out of debt.
They fail on account of having no strategy.
True.
