    It’s all about jetting that’s it. Those could be great for your setup.
    I don’t think valve size is a gauge to work with - of course it is but reality says you can get many varieties of setups functioning on the same valve size .
    It all goes back to where do you want your power band . A large venturie will be soggy on the bottom end and awesome in the higher rpm range . And vise versa for a smaller vent .
    The venturie effect is squeezing the air through an opening where it speeds up on the other side - this aids in port velocity for lower rpms and also vacuum to pull fuel out of the bowl. But can become a choke at higher rpms.
    On a big vent you loose all sorts of port velocity on the bottom end but gain the loss of a “choke” on the top end so it flows and flows.
    All about drive habits and just what you want to achieve.
    IDAs can be the best of both worlds if setup correctly.
    44s with 36vents is a strong all around setup .
    I ran 44s with 32vents for ever such a good setup for my little motor .
    I think the board with flow is not functional if the information is not consistent when comparing .
    I also think carbs are easy - need to do a video of what is what and why things are happening when they happen.

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  3 роки тому +2

      Well said sir! That’s pretty much what happened, large vent on this setup absolutely flew mid through upper rpm band but was soggy down below. Of course I needed to up the idle and main jets some more. However, I don’t race this car and street drivability is important for me.
      I ended up putting my 44’s back on for now. I know it could be better than what it is but all around it’s great how it is. I figured I’d see how these perform and for the price I couldn’t go wrong.
      IDA’s with 36 vents would be perfect but then I’d be out cnc machined intakes 🤷‍♂️
      Sometimes it’s just best to leave things alone but then that’s no fun 😂

    Ahh Dual Carbs... as soon as you said 48's I thought about port velocity and jetting. Some one should be able to supply you with vents or have a shop spin some out on a lathe. likely you will need to jet up on the main and drop the air a little. You can get bigger vents for your 44's or have your current vents bored out to say 38mm you will need to bump up the main and drop the air jets some as well. Idle jets may need a bump up too if you cant get it to adjust with the mixture screws. CB has that update kit for the IDF'S that changes the secondary vent to a spray bar and it comes with new vents and jets. but that kit would kill your bottom end too. I found stock idf44mm carbs on the street are just right for me. I run very similar engine to yours. A set of CB ultra wedge ports with bigger intake valves would do the trick too. I have a sweet set of gene berg 52's that I would love to run but would have the same issue as you right now. manifolds linkage vent size ect. Sad to say for me the next step is fuel injection or turbo or both to get more power and keep drivability with out tearing my motor down. thanks for sharing I am also not an expert but enjoy and appreciate what you are doing.

      @VWJawbreaker  3 роки тому

      Like you, I’m not an expert. I’m just trying new things and bringing everyone along for the ride.
      You are correct, the vents are too big to idle and for low end. She screams hard up top though but not very streetable imo.
      I did find a set of smaller vents for these carbs, that’ll be a project for another time down the road.
      Thanks for the feedback, hope you have a great week.

      As I always say, I’m not an expert. I made a mistake by thinking I had larger intake valves than I did, that’s why they didn’t run well in low rpm’s. Mid and high rpm’s it pulled like a beast and needed way bigger main jets.

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  Рік тому +1

      That can be a long answer but the short of it is, the emulsion tube is used to maintain the air fuel ratio at all speeds.It consists of a well with main metering jet at its bottom. The jet has holes on its sides.It is in communication with atmospheric air. Initially air is drawn through the holes into the well and fuel is emulsified.

    Hi, Gary, have been watching your videos on youtube for quiet a while now.. Very informative !
    I am in the process of building a 1835 engine for my '73 beetle.
    Have the engine ready so far, and just pulled the old engine, to transfer all the cooling tins and other bits and pieces.
    Tried to do a mock up with the new manifolds and carbs, and there is a lot of interference between the manifold flange and the cooling tin.
    So much, that it is pretty much impossible to get the manifold in.
    How did you modify the cooling tins to make that possible ?
    Any tips would be greatly appreciated !

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  3 місяці тому

      Glad some of the videos have helped ya out!
      As far as the head tins, you’ll most likely need to modify them a little at a time to get the manifolds to fit. Usually you’ll modify the interior “flap” that goes between the spark plus. You might be able to bend things around a little to get the manifolds to sit properly.

I had the same issue with 48 IDA's prior to installing 37mm Venturi. The way the 48 IDF's were out of the box you would have needed at least a 70 idle jets, and with the large Venturi and FK8 cam your idle might have settled in around 1200'ish RPM this is fine and well for the strip but is just not particle for a driven street car.

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  3 роки тому +1

      100% correct, this would have been perfect for the strip but not practical on the street. They did great on mind and upper rpm, just no low end torque and some drivability was lost. We live and learn, we wanted to see what would happen and now we know.

Will that distributor kit help with better startups and acceleration etc. What's your take on the 1641 engine. To be honest it runs like a hungry fat lady at a buffet. Sorry that was wrong. In a way. I should have went aa 88 pistons. Probably would have ran substantially stronger. Hey, thanks for responding pal.

      The nice thing is the Magnaspark is fully customizable and can grow with you as your needs or engine combo changes down the road. That setup does deliver more spark energy which will help with all around performance.
      I had a 1641 before I built this other engine. I wouldn’t recommend the slip in 88’s as the wall are too thin and the engine will run hotter. The machine in 88’s, well you mine as well machine for 90.5’s or 94’s at that point.

      The beat place to be honest, grab a Webber book. Bench setup is the most important, from there is jetting. Read whatever you can find.

    I did the math. The 48’s are gonna be a tick small but I think they would go good on my stock cam 1641 with 041 heads from JC Whitney ha ha. 😎

      You know Randy, you may want to go with 51’s for that setup 😂😂

      @@VWJawbreaker I don’t want the front wheels to come too far off the ground. 🤪I just want stop light to stop light acceleration. And if you knew where I live you’d understand how silly that sounds. I live in Moody County. There are no stoplights in the entire county. There is no McDonalds in the whole County. We do have a subway and a Dollar General Ha ha. Oh we are up to 3 four way stops. That really confuses people. I mean who really is supposed to go first. No you go we all trying to be nice. On that rambling note I better get back to work ha ha. 1641 is getting a centermount Dellorto ‘DRLA40 with 30 mm Venturis. And I’m gonna like it cause that what I got 🙀😎

    Buy American 100% of the time and support your country! I pay up and will always use American made parts and if I can’t find what I need I buy European parts! I think we all need to rethink our choices! Car sounds great!!!! Thanks Bro!

      Yep you’re right, but if enough of us demand parts be made in North America.? We all need to collectively push for a higher moral standard from those rich company owners, they can afford to make less profit and create more jobs here! Really informative video. Guess you have to take the rough with the smooth. Do you think in the future you'll try them with smaller venturis? What size would you go for? 36mm? Or is that too small?

    • @VWJawbreaker
      @VWJawbreaker  3 роки тому

      Hey Tom!
      I might give them a try with 38mm venturis later down the road, pretty sure that’s the smallest they make for the 48 IDF carbs. They ran great in mid and upper rpm but lost that low end torque.
