@@wickedwerks that’s so true with these engines but my ocd doesn’t like that statement 😂 I don’t mind a drip, I just want to ensure it’s not a stream…. Expensive as hell right now if I had to replace this engine.
Last comment lol, one thing that works is Lucas oil leak stop. After I fixed my issue a year ago it was back to the typical VW leak, not a problem but I wanted to have a dry Dub, man I put a bottle in and haven't seen a drip in 2 months thus far. It works and seals the typical drip area, studs. Grab a bottle, worse that can happen is you're out of 11 bucks, but it works
Having the oil thermostat on there it helps keep the engine from being too cool and the fan only comes on when needed by the thermostat for the fan. See what your oil temps are first before adding an oil cooler onto your setup 👍
Gary , If you decide to pull the engine and find the problem please make a video. We all like your laid back style ( also Levi and a shot of the puppy when possible ). Have to refill my Jawbreaker mug with coffee so I can watch some more videos. It's 10 degrees outside here in N.H.
I appreciate that Mike! Maybe we could have Levi and the puppy do the work for once 🤔😂 I’m sure at some point down the road I’ll address the problem but it’s nothing serious right now. Most all VW’s leak, it just drives me nuts is all. Stay warm up there!!
Damn Gary your sweating horse power! I can't remember who it was but I watched a video a few years back and the rear main seal was new and leaked so he took the spring out from the lip and put a little more tension on it and that did the trick to seal it up
Well… I mentioned that trick in one of my videos a long while back and it was done to this main seal as well. Even swapped the flywheel out. I have an idea to resolve this, little risky but I’ll do a video on it later this year when I pull it out for the Sickxty.
Hi Gary!! Thanks for the video I have a problem like that but it's with my rear axle seal only leaks when it sits for a while .😁😁 see ya on the next one.
Hey buddy! That’s for always being here, I greatly appreciate you! Interesting that your seals leak when sitting, maybe it’s telling you to drive it more 😂
Mine has the identical issue Gary. Dry as a bone while its running, but weeps a few drops when the engine is cold and sitting. Like you I'm curious as to whether its the seal or the cam plug, or even possibly a galley plug, but since it is only a tiny drip and never gets any worse, I just leave it alone. Good to know I'm not the only one who has this anomaly though!
Crazy how these engines love to drip oil 😂 I’ll sort it out later this year when I get time. Like you, not going to worry about a drip, as long as it stays as a drip.
Right where jawbreaker is leaking is where mine was, from the extra sump to case. I tightened the inner screws and even sealed it up with gasket maker around the circle of the sump. I think it happened when I pulled the motor and it made the sump uneven when it rested on the ground after removing, I didn't drop it evenly.
I doubt that would cause a leak, they are meant to be on the ground on the dumps and not supported by the exhaust or heads. Could have been a fluke thing or just enough of a jostle to make it leak. Sounds like you got it under control 👍
old sand buggy trick: remove seal, take out the spring. Find the joint of the spring, take it apart, clip off two coils. This will tighten the spring two hairs . If that doesn't work clip off 3 coils, you'll get 3 hairs of tightening.
These are good problems to have; the ones that don't strand us on the road! Would be interesting to do the test with a few pumps of the clutch so end play is a part of checking the rear main seal and flywheel sealing surface. Probably nothing, but would be one of the differences between idling and driving. Good luck when you get to it, and looking forward to seeing you and Levi at the Sanford show!
I agree completely! I don’t mind a drip as long as it’s not a gusher and leave me on the side of the road with a locked up engine. End play is good, I did check that and also tried with the clutch in and out to see if there was a difference…. Didn’t notice anything. At least it’s nothing major and it can wait till towards the end of the year to investigate the cause. See you at Sanford show! Just need to remember to put those parts in the car for you.
Hi Gary, my 65 bug never leaked a drop of oil so guess I was lucky on it, but my 68-bus leaked and didn't notice after driving it that way it really started leaking between the haves and threw a rod. went and got another motor and it started leaking too but to the guy I sold it to.
Hey Tim! Yeah, some leak and some don’t. I have a plan but it won’t be till towards the end of the year or so before I can tear into it. Sucks you threw a rod on that one engine.
It’s good to stay on top of things when they give you a sign, but nothing serious, I think. Of course, I’ve never had a VW that didn’t leak at least a little. 👍
I was expecting it to be worse but glad it’s nothing to worry about. I’m sure at some point it’ll get to me and I’ll tear it all apart but until then it’s fine 👍 Hope all is well sir!
Bummer Gary! Unfortunately I find the rear main seals etc seem to not be great quality in the vw aftermarket (even the top quality ones), they don't seem to last as long as other cars I've worked on. Even if the flywheel is perfect etc, just the way it seems to be.👍👍

I keep telling myself well its just tiny leak no big deal but then again im like i gotta fix this 😂 but so much work all over again.
That’s definitely a possibility, I’ve done that before and then had to take it back apart and redo the sealant when I saw it on my fingers / hand 😂 The drip drives us nuts but is it really worth tearing it all the way down just for that? I’m sure I’ll do it later this year anyway 😂
Hey Gary ! where mine has a oil leak and the more I try to fix it the worst it is getting is the connection on the VDO oil pressure gauge . I changed the nylon hose to a ? copper or brass one and it didn't leak for 2 years now it drips on the apron and finds it's way to a header pipe and stinks . I would hate to have to buy a new one $$$$$ . I notice this about your motor compared to mine is from cold to hot it only drops 5-10 lbs . it goes from 70 cold to 65 and when I come back from town on a 100 degree day 60 . Mine don't have boost spring kit just a 30mm schadech pump .
That is frustrating for sure! I hate that plastic line they sell for the mechanical oil gauges, they always seem to break! I’m running a 26mm pump and thin oil… that’s why when it warms up the pressure drops more. At temp, my idle pressure is 15-20 which is more than enough. 10psi per 1k rpm is all you need. Too much and the oil will bypass the oil cooler.
Unfortunately, without pulling the engine to verify, the engine will need to come apart for me to fix this 🙄 So, as of right now it’s not leaking that bad so it can wait a while.
They all leak oil; a fact of life 😂. The problem is if it’s way too much. Rear main seals and even the seal around the transaxle main shaft are usual suspects. If I were you I’d drive it and leave it be until it gets really bad. You’re golden.
Yes sir, that’s my thoughts and plan as well… gonna let her eat for now. Deal with it down the road if I feel like it. Doesn’t hurt to investigate and ensure the issue isn’t bigger than it is.
Please make a video so we all learn. I cant believe that you got a brand new case and I know you are very careful with everything , and now JB is leaking . If it was an old worn out engine ok but its was build on a new case so it should not leak .
You’d think so but I also used a different sealant on the case, that could be the problem or many other factors. It’ll be sorted out later this year at some point when I have the time. Until then, it’s just a drip that won’t cause any harm.
Just leaking a little power. They all mark their teritory. Glad to see a new video. Have a blessed day
