You could have won the game against the atraxa ramp deck, 14:20. Playing the black one drop and putting the cursed rule on your wicked creature would have dealt that 1 extra damage.
favorite Role combo is Twisted Sewer-Witch and Warehouse Tabby. If you keep blinking Sewer-Witch you make a Rat, then put a Wicked Role on each Rat you control. If those Rats had any Wicked Roles, you drain your opponent for each one that leaves, and Tabby makes another Rat for each one as well (which then can get Roles from Sewer-Witch to make fall off and make more Rats and drain your opponents)
The Wicked Role Aura activates the drain effect when the -aura- hits the graveyard. Thus, if you can, you want to replace the Wicked Role with another +1/+1 Role as often as possible to grind out the extra damage Edit: ah, i think he might have realized that when they flickered his creatures and lost to the Wicked Role hitting the graveyard
@14:23 you might have missed lethal there, you could have re-cursed your Hexmage with the second Hexmage, making the Wicked role go to the graveyard and killing them, they were tapped out and could not crack food, I think.
One fun thing about roles that might be fun is Chaotic Transformation, as a token you can finally get an artifact, enchantment and creature from your deck as you choose with the right deck building. Might turn into a fun combodeck ^^'
So far I've seen "Not Dead After All" in Rakdos Evoke as the Wicked role makes your evoked elemental a little pricier to remove. Looking forward to seeing what else plays.
Honestly when an opponent is a ramp deck and drops stomper turn 3, I think it's the right call to leave a blocker behind since the follow-up of invasion of zendikar + flip it for 2 4/4 vigilant beatsticks is a huge tempo swing
Seth you had the win on game 2 with the wicked role! Just had to cast that 1 drop, replace role with he role you got to put on and that would have been the final damage
I would play Braids instead of Eriette, it draws cards and also drains for 2, and helps to get rid of curses. Warehouse Tabby also works great here since it generates rats each time you sac, replace or have roles placed into the grave.
That's a really good idea. I might have to do that... Eriette doesn't feel that strong as unless you're in a total dream board state, you don't do that much damage or gain that much life from her. There's going to be a lot of decks that just can't sacrifice the enchantment to match; can they sacrifice a token though? The trade seems really appealing. You sacrifice something cheap, then they either give you a card & take 2, or sacrifice something presumably important to their game plan.
The Atraxa endgame at 14:30 had a few ways to swing lethal(frex, Spiteful Hexmage to replace a Wicked Role, summon the Spellbook Vendor to replace one of the Wickeds at battle start while keeping the +1s), and if you didn't notice those, you still coulda swung defensive advantage by summoning Hexmage(B), cursing Hexmage, having Spellbook Vendor(W+1) hit the board, spending the (1) to give itself Sorcerer, and using Wicked Witch adventure(B) to give a Wicked to overwrite the Curse, thats 5 Mana within your colors of WWW+B+[W/B](Which woulda still lost to Twilight but would have put up a better board for an Atraxa or other more grindy tactic)
Sweet deck! I'm kinda surprised that this deck is pretty much just a WOE limited deck - I kinda expected to see some of the Modified payoffs from NEO (or at least Michiko's Reign of Truth).
Err... "just over 20 rares and mythics" is definitely not Arena-budget, but the deck looks awesome and I can't wait to try it out once WOE drops on Arena
Love the content and the deck! One question though: Would Caves of Koilos brake the budget? The deck already isn't arena budget friendly because of all the rares And then maybe to keep it orzhov while still adding threat protection maybe "Not Dead After All"?
I think Ossification is just better than Cooped Up. They're both Auras, and Eriette's effect is redundant with Cooped up. I guess there might be common vs. Uncommon considerations, but that shouldn't be a long term issue.
Seth you actually punted having lethal vs atraxa, the wicked role token deals damage when the role is putted on the graveyard, playing the other spiteful hexmage and putting its role replacing the wicked would have dealt the 1 damage needed
Roles are weird. I won a sealed event because I got the rat role witch who gives all your rats roles and the red rat token generator to swing in with a bunch of 2/2s, then saccing them to deal an extra bunch of damage and hit my opponent for 20ish on the spot
Seth: "The deck is playing more Cooped Ups than Ossifications, mostly because I wanted to see just how strong the upgraded Pacifism felt, but the numbers should probably be reversed. Ossification does everything Cooped Up does in our deck but is better against cards like Sheoldred, the Apocalypse that have static abilities that work even if they can't attack or block. "
I'm playing a deck something like this one, but less budget. Playsets of Hexmage, Spellbook Vendor, and 3-of Conceited Witch & Archon of the Wild Rose. I put in Deep Cavern Bat because the disruption stapled to an evasive attacker is too good to pass up post-LCI if you're in black. I'm also running Twinblade Geist from VOW: double-striker that takes roles & other buffs super well, and can be Disturbed to cast again later as another aura. My sideboard has: - Virtue of Persistence & Go For The Throat to board in against aggro. I want the removal that gains me life, or instant-speed kill so I can try and blow them out if they pump with Monstrous Rage. - Ruin-Lurker Bat to swap in in lieu of removal to play against control. It's really hard for Standard control to profitably deal with 1-drops other than blowing up everything with a wrath, and I just want to play faster and aggressive. They aren't playing a lot of permanents to remove anyway, often they just play a couple Loch-Whales. - Kaya, Spirit's Justice for midrange mirrors, as she's a removal option that just has ongoing value. Planeswalker that protects herself, can dig for better cards, and exile stuff.
feels like a deck that really wants the WB sac a nonland permanent exile a nonland permanent with flashback card honestly. Rite of oblivion or whatever.
Because this vid did not have a post-game wrap-up, the games we saw had Seth go 4 and 3(blah blah Early Access disclamer blah), and, yes, Seth punted game 4.
14:30 Seth Missed lethal by playing hexmage to curse role his other hexmage, making the wicked role fall off to kill his opponent
Or doing the same with spellbook vendor pre-combat
Yeah. Big oops on his part
Was just about to make the same comment.
I was just about to comment this.
Yep saw it as well
You could have won the game against the atraxa ramp deck, 14:20. Playing the black one drop and putting the cursed rule on your wicked creature would have dealt that 1 extra damage.
I was screaming "You threw!" Needed to make sure someone pointed that out.

Use Braids and Spellbook Vendor to trigger enchantment etb and ltb each turn
Don't you mean Smellbook Bender?
The Wicked Role Aura activates the drain effect when the -aura- hits the graveyard. Thus, if you can, you want to replace the Wicked Role with another +1/+1 Role as often as possible to grind out the extra damage

I was thinking the same thing.

This set will have a huge impact on other formats, and I am here for it.

Im super excited for this! I think the roles deck looks super fun to play. Definitely gonna pick it up!
Seth I love your editor ✍️ 😊
The intro 😂😂😂

Yeah it's just hard to make both paper and arena budget in the same deck :(
He says it's not budget literally before 1:00
Love the content and the deck!
One question though: Would Caves of Koilos brake the budget? The deck already isn't arena budget friendly because of all the rares
And then maybe to keep it orzhov while still adding threat protection maybe "Not Dead After All"?
In paper it's a fine addition, like $2 for a playset
24:00 the rats can't block seth! And your spellbook vendor has vigilance
I have watched this forever, but I just subscribed because of that intro music, have my like too while we at it
Why not play wicked visitor? It pings everytime an enchantment hits the graveyard. Roles hit the graveyard quite a bit in this deck.
"Our opponent's deck looks sweet" - never more apt than now against the cookie deck.
I think Ossification is just better than Cooped Up. They're both Auras, and Eriette's effect is redundant with Cooped up. I guess there might be common vs. Uncommon considerations, but that shouldn't be a long term issue.
I agree, plus ossification is a good card to craft, unlike coop up.
Did anyone else hear smellbook bender around 2:40 when Seth was explaining the deck? 😅
For Seth card names are just suggestions. Smellbook bender is a nice name.
Seth you actually punted having lethal vs atraxa, the wicked role token deals damage when the role is putted on the graveyard, playing the other spiteful hexmage and putting its role replacing the wicked would have dealt the 1 damage needed
This is a tale for the ages
No wrapup where you talk about how the deck did, what could change, etc??
Roles are weird. I won a sealed event because I got the rat role witch who gives all your rats roles and the red rat token generator to swing in with a bunch of 2/2s, then saccing them to deal an extra bunch of damage and hit my opponent for 20ish on the spot
Unfortunately not budget on arena. 20 rares is a lot man
Imma be honest dude.. 20 or less rares is pretty cheap on Arena. Lots of decks in standard right now have more than twice that.
I agree. 20 rares are pretty standard for a deck or on the cheaper side even.
Tell that to my 4 Jace the Mindsculptors I got for $400
Can’t please everyone every video. Go play some paper! Super cheap :p
If you draft a lot you should have 20 rare wild cards sitting around. You may also get many of these cards if you’re drafting Wilds of Eldraine.
that's the best opening ever! pleeeease try to fit in more memes into your vids, that'd be awsome :D
This was a great video brother Set.
That intro was an all-timer
Do rolls count as casting an enchantment? I'm intrigued at the possibility of them in Enchantress, but I'm not sure if they'd even work.
They are not spells you cast, so no, they are created and enter the battlefield so they trigger those effects, but are not casted.
@@gochadc Thank you, They would count as enchantments for all that glitters, though, so they still might be useful
@@AngelusNielson cards like setessan champion and eidolon of blossoms will still trigger because they happen on ETB
@@skykur WEll I"'m an arena player so my options are a bit more limited.
@@AngelusNielson my condolences 🙏
Rolling? Hating? Riding Dirty? What am I missing?
Ooooh... 'Role'-ing 😂
This makes me want to build an abzan version with Calix
since when is the set out in arena ?
Can this be good in pioneer if mana base is changed?
Hey Seth, is there a reason you're playing cooped up instead of more ossification? Ossification is just better, is it more expensive or something?
Seth: "The deck is playing more Cooped Ups than Ossifications, mostly because I wanted to see just how strong the upgraded Pacifism felt, but the numbers should probably be reversed. Ossification does everything Cooped Up does in our deck but is better against cards like Sheoldred, the Apocalypse that have static abilities that work even if they can't attack or block. "
I really want to try something like this with eriette's tempting apple. Steal a creature, attack play the spiteful hexmage and curse their creature.
think this deck is still okay in the modern meta?
14:25 duddde what a misplayyy
U couldve cast the hexmage to remove the wicked role to the win
That Intro!
Has anyone got any sideboard tips when it comes to this deck?

Ok the intro actually made me laugh
Import on arena possible for this on android?? I'm relatively new to arena but not mtg. Thanks ppls
Could he not have cursed atraxa?
Roles.... Consequences
feels like a deck that really wants the WB sac a nonland permanent exile a nonland permanent with flashback card honestly. Rite of oblivion or whatever.
2:35 smellbook bender
"Rakdos, do you have removal?" The better question is do they ever not have removal.

Budget decks are kinda funny when done on the event where you get all the cards for free. Technically all early access decks are budget decks.
I think it would be better to run basics instead I’d tappe land
Where’s my Bunnicorn?!
Description says "$0 budget"
"Up a beanstalk, it's going to be interesting to see if that card is actually good" SPOILER: Yes.
Um, Seth... Topiary Stomper has been in the game for *65* million years.
I don't normally yell at you for punts, but you should have attacked through the topiary stompers.
rick roles hahaha
it sounds like you say smellbook bender instead of spellbook vendor 🤣🤣
Slumbering KEEPGUARD
Another budget magic video with Seth complaining about the mana
"tough cookie seems like a pretty good card" yeah it's absolutely disgusting in limited lol
hexmage might be a sleeper he says, I could've SWORN you or crim were on about this during preview season, but yeah, it's an absolute house fr fr
wow im early
