+C Johnston I can see how working as a person that is flown to these destinations so they can replenish the lack of vans could be a very good job if they don't make people rush to return to the locations, provide nice accommodations for the trip back to the Bay Area, and provides decent benefits! Some of those trips would make many people very comfortably Upper Middle Class while also getting an opportunity to see their beautiful country!

It based on truck inventory, the more trucks leaving the less they have to rent out. So if you moving out and take the truck one way you are removing inventory from that location. Now if you renting a truck one way and bringing it into the area that has less trucks you get charged less cause you actually helping them by bringing inventory into a area that to give them more trucks to use in that area. While I'm sure there other factors this is one of them.

I rented a 10' truck, which was more than I needed, and it cost me $1,600+. I thought it sucked, but didn't think much more about it until I started to see stories like this. Last time I checked the states that require that most federal assistance compared to the tax dollar they pay, are right wing Republican states... so for every dollar Mississippi or Louisiana or Arkansas pays in taxes...they require back 2 to 3 dollars in welfare and aid...
Where does all that money come from..? California, New York, Delaware, Minnesota, mostly left leaning Democratic states... they are called donor states...
Without these states US would basically be Mexico...

Here in the Sierra foothills bay area high tech folks are renting U-Haul trucks and taking them to the bay area to load up and bring here to homes they have bought.
Or a rental that is $1k versus the $3k they were paying in San Francisco/Palo Alto. Cheaper to commute from Jackson CA via Amtrak in Stockton to San Jose than live in San Jose and surrounding areas.
Our family has been in California since 1867 and there is NO way any of us will leave the state!!

As a native California there are so many things to LOVE about the state. Could never live in a landlocked area of the states.
Love that we can be skiing at Tahoe or Big Bear 9-11am, then drive home and be able to go surfing by 3-5pm.
Mountain climbing (real mountains 10k+) desert camping and backpacking, hiking the beautiful diverse micro climate Pacific Coast Trail from San Diego to the Oregon border. Magnificent wild water rivers, ocean beaches from Oregon to the Mexico border.
And the San Francisco bay areas has more Noble laureates than any other state or country. And between Stanford (our school) the University of California campuses, and USC our universities always rank in the top ten universities both here in the states and in the world.
An awesomely diverse ethnic, racial, religious, economic, educational population which I love. People with big dreams who know it will take hard hard work to be a success here in California are still coming here!

I lived in the upper Midwest all my life so far and living here is reasonable and in some areas really cheap (probably because we get hit hard in the winter) so I can't fathom paying a lot for rent or a house, but I heard that an apartment in San Francisco can go as high as $2000 a month, which is ridiculous considering I only pay $850 a month for my 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house in my quiet area.

What's up with all the comments blaming liberalism as the reason people are leaving? People are not leaving because this state sucks. People are leaving because of the capitalism that conservatives are supposed to love. You know, supply and demand. The supply is low and the demand is high and some people can't handle the prices so they're tapping out.

It's all about truck saturation. Cost less to go where they have fewer trucks. If a large number of trucks are leaving a given area one way, they have to bring them back somehow. It's not that the price going out is high, it's the price going in is discounted. I paid $350 for a one way truck going less than a hundred miles in missouri. If I had brought it back to same place would have been $180.

When you include that the Democratic Party has Californians paying an additional 15% state income tax and one of the countries highest property taxes on top of the 30% federal income tax, it's really expensive. And that's not including the 9% sales tax, 50 cents per gallon gas taxes, bridge/road tolls, DMV fees and smog inspection and certificate, soda tax, recycle drink container fees, cigarette tax, it all starts to add up, especially when you consider already living in an area with high housing costs, congested traffic, high crime, homeless crisis and sanctuary for criminal illegals.

That's not the point. The point is, where are they going to *live* if everywhere is so expensive? There comes a point where you literally just can't afford to live in a city and the commute would be too long and expensive to be practical, so even if they are illegal, they're gonna have to find some place else to live.

So, rent a self-move truck from a business in Nevada or some other state bordering California, drive to the Bay area, load the moving boxes in the truck, drive back to the bordering state where the truck was picked up. Then either put the moving boxes in storage there until you have found a new residence or rent a different truck at a cheap rate, transfer the load to that truck and drive to your destination. Sure, this is an extra day or two of driving, but why give the truck rental company excess profit when you can keep that extra money in your own pocket? Or you could just sell most of your stuff on Craig's List or eBay before the move, load up your car's trunk with the minimum clothing you need and just drive away to live someplace far less expensive -- buy new stuff at your destination. Keep in mind that most of the furnishings and window treatments from that small Bay Area apartment just won't work in that much larger condo or rented house in a state east or north of California.

I live is SoCal and I'm seriously thinking about moving my business to a low cost of living state. I pay my workers ~$40 per hour and it is still hard for them to make ends meet or afford housing. I could pay someone ~$20 per hour in Ohio and they would be just fine and have a higher standard of living. California has decided that it values welfare and open borders more than it does the productive class. It wont be long before the entire state looks like Baltimore.
