  • This tree is approximately 35 years old and was an original planting at the time of the home construction. Over the years I have given this tree quite a few haircuts but last year I let it go natural. Going into Spring it was obvious that a fresh haircut was needed. Check out the twisted trunk which I find to be the trees best feature.

Thanks for your comment. Pruning unique trees is always a little scary. I killed a Japanese Maple a few years back after getting carried away with the pruners.

Thanks for the insight of how this tree could look, I got one of these in my front yard and didn't know what to do with it. You might have just saved me from chopping it down.

Your welcome. My hope is that I share content that helps others. These trees are pretty cool looking in the landscape so I hope you can prune it and enjoy it in your yard.

Thanks for the video! I have one of these trees in front and it’s going wild! I wasn’t sure how to prune it.

My way of pruning is not set in stone. You can shape your tree how you want in relation to how it is growing (shape). Don't prune more than a third of the tree at a time though to keep it healthy.

You did a great job at pruning the tree to show off the trunk, but I prefer the weeping messy look, maybe would have given it a trim instead of a buzz cut 😊 Thanks for sharing.

I don't disagree with you on the messy look. Nice thing with this tree is that it will grow back messy again so next pruning job will take a reshape.

I like the - weeping to almost the ground - look but l always get the wayward upright branches lopped
    About every two years
My tree is by the driveway in front for all to admire!! It is about 20 years old and my pride and joy!

My tree is probably 30 years old and it is amazing how thick the trunk has gotten. I really like the view of the trunk through pruning higher. They are neat trees.

Just purchased a small specimen and been trying to figure out where to plant it. I originally was going to place it along our back fence but thought it would need more space to spread, but yours is right along a fence too and doing great. Thanks for showing the pruning job, i was wondering what to do once the leader reached the ground. I think i will continue to snake it and allow more lateral branches to grow. Thank you!

Your welcome. People generally plant on fence lines or on the corners of border plantings I think. You can train it however you want so that gives you some flexibility on planting it where it goes best with your yard. Thanks for watching,

Just bought a really crazy looking one of these, has a big S shape. Have you experimented with training the tree at all? Long term I'd love to air layer it and get it growing in a few places.

I do a lot of fruit tree espalier and festoon tree pruning but have not spent much time training other types of trees. As long as a tree is small and the branches are pliable (bendable) you can install wire or tie branches to the trunk or stakes and make any shapes you want that are feasible. It is a fun project and you can make something that no one else has. Fun stuff.
