- Colorado Blue Spruce has many different shapes and sizes. This video looks at pruning up the lower branches on Hoopsi and shearing to maintain the conical shape on Montgomery, and our specimen Dwarf Globe Spruce speaks for itself.

Always a pleasure to see your property. The backdrop of tall trees is awesome. I planted a 2 ft Colorado blue spruce this spring. I'm going on 67 this year, hope i live long enough to enjoy it's maturity. Lol!

We’re learning a lot through your videos. Thank you. Been planting different blue spruces in our landscape. Needle cast is a big issue here in zone 6b Connecticut. I was surprised when you said you deal with needle cast. I figured we have it because of our sopping humidity. Yes? No? Also, please tell us where we can purchase that amazing metal moon gate/arbor? What are it’s dimensions?
Yes, I believe the humidity makes a big difference in the severity of the needle cast fungal disease problems. We are pretty arid where I live, so not as much of a concern, but east of us about 300 miles you’ll find yourself in MN lake (humid) country and it’s a problem. I had the large gateway to the moon art piece custom made by Davis Designs of Fargo, ND. The one you’ve noticed has an inside diameter of 6.5 feet. I have access to one more in my area if you are really interested?? 😊

Your Montgomery looks awesome! I’m wanting to plant something blue on the corner of my house next to other shrubs.
I’ve noticed a new cultivar called Monty! That gets 8’ H and 6’ wide!
In your many years of experience would you recommend planting a spruce like Montgomery or Monty 5-6’ off the corner of a house?
Is it hard to keep up with the pruning when you get it to that sweet spot?
I wouldn’t mind pruning annually to have that awesome specimen in a desired location.
Sounds like a great idea. Once they hit that size you are shooting for, I think it is quite easy to keep them at that size with an annual shearing. Especially if it is smaller varieties like you mentioned, since they naturally have a shorter flush of growth each spring.
Do you think a dwarf blue spruce would survive in a pot. This may sound crazy but I was thinking what if I could get a potted Blue Spruce that only got about 6' above the pot and have it on a plant dolly. Then bring it in every December for a month and decorate it for my xmas tree, then take the decorations off and set it back outside until next xmas.
While you could get one to live in a pot for many years, I believe the Colorado Spruce requires a cold/dormant period of at least 4 to 6 weeks. By bringing it indoors, you probably won't satisfy that requirement, and I suspect it will decline.
Is there any trees other than Pine ones that are evergreen in zone 5A? Want to make a decorative garden in cold climate and could need some inspiration
If I am understanding your question correctly, you are interested evergreen trees, but not the Pines (Pinus genus). If that is the case, there are many trees to choose from in your zone: Juniper, Arborvitae, Spruce, Yew , and Fir each have dozens of varieties.
