My 31 yo son has been rocking cardigans since he was in high school! We used to make fun of him but also they somehow work perfectly. In fact, when we lost my dad last year, my mom offered some of his clothes to all my sons and he was the only one who said “yes, please!” Funny!!

It seems like if over 50 are comfortable with themselves they can honestly pull off most styles (unless they are too skimpy, show too much saggy skin) I mix sweaters with skirts, often with chunky punk boots and I am 65. I wear bright lipstick and fun big leather earrings. To me its a creative fun endeavor! But I am not conservative in my style.

@@DoraSometimes there are quite a few others I don’t know their names but repeatedly see them attending fashion shows. They’re in the fashion industry. Though I’ll be the first to admit they have access to pieces others don’t, help with styling and money to be able to afford unique pieces. That doesn’t include most women. I personally know 2 women who are 55-65 who can dress anyway they choose and look amazing. I definitely agree most people can’t do it or just don’t want to move away from classic styles.

When it's minus 20 celsius those cardigans work overtime under my winter coat. Not giving them up anytime soon. I own a leopard print cardigan and a leopard print tunic that are staying in my wardrobe as well (am way north of 50). We should all wear what we like. One thing i found out about being over 50 is that i have the confidence and experience to do and wear exactly what pleases me without worrying about the optics or what anyone thinks. Trinny always styles her leopard prints with neon colours and she is in her 60s

    • @teresacarle294
      @teresacarle294 Місяць тому +2

😊Trinny turned 60🎂 this year (as I did shortly there after). Thoroughly enjoy her striking color combinations & her spectacular
🐾leopard print clash. ❤Love to vicariously live through her
      💫flamboyance & drama🎭. She's looking more vital & vibrant every day.
Like her, I generally prefer that continuous column of color↕️. It's truly lengthening. 😉My collection of dark neutrals typically make me feel capable, confident, glamorous & powerful⚡️.
💜Brights & Lights💗 are so joyful, but here's where I depart from that vertical color preference. 😳Going head-to-toe w/either too much color intensity or even soft sweet femininity can be a bit much for me. Look for acceptable ways to incorporate that 💥pop💥 of daring or pretty color (on either side of the 🌈spectrum) in a way that suits my sensibilities better.
🙊It's hilarious that Trinny makes sheep noises when she feels like mutton🐑. Each of us KNOWS when a pattern, color, or silhouette is WEARING us. Have a blue & white stripe button up from the 90s & a navy scarf w/tiny white polka dots that completely overwhelms me. I only managed to wear both a few times. Refuse to part w/'em for sentimental reasons.
🤩Adore these two classic prints on the hanger, on others, & in theory. Sadly, I can't seem to tolerate 'em on myself😖. It's the same w/most floral prints. 🥰They're such eye candy🍭 & so highly appealing to my feminine senses♀️. I've always hated the ultra girly-girl petite prairie prints on me that even ⚜️French Chic stylists are pushing today for aging style.
🤫Meanwhile, I have joyfully worn some SUPERSIZE bold 🌱botanical prints & florals🌹 (done cleverly in a minimal fashion vs crazy busy way). I loved 'em, while OTHERS
❤️‍🔥passionately hated🤬 'em. No regrets. Unapologetically like some flamboyant minimalism in that direction. 🌷Precious feminine prints while sweet simply don't suit me.
😁/🤢Have an instant & visceral reaction to most pattern on myself, but at least I am finally discerning what belongs in the fantasy realm. 💖Love Trinny's outrageous ✨️sparkle✨️ too, but I have long realized my tolerance for being 💎bejeweled is more limited. 🤏Tiny doses on a tee, baseball cap, bag, or sneakers can make me smile. Maybe a metallic clutch or sandal.
🧐Strangely, I can happily tolerate some harlequin, gingham, tiny checks, XL buffalo checks, plaid, & abstract prints. Vertical stripes typically only work on bottom⬇️, but I do have a thin multi-blue & white striped gilet that I'll wear in Summer. These things must be evaluated on a case by case basis.
😍Love, love, love animal print〰️but as Leonie suggested〰️I prefer to pare leopard & other such prints back w/a dash of 🖤black, burgundy, or brown🤎.
🤔Cardi's have always been problematic for me. I only own a handful. Avoid chunky knits that add bulk or volume on top〰️& sweaters in general are too hot🥵 in my climate (never get much cpw).
Frankly, it's easy to feel frumpy👵 in certain garments when you have a BIGGER bust. It's hard to find the right balance ⚖️ between va-va-voom & modesty. The latter always leans into serious frumpy, dumpy territory.
✂️Cropped tops, shirts, & jackets can be excessively flattering for my short-waisted extreme hourglass shape⏳️. Sculpted short tops are typically most flattering for my figure. You get the look of tucking paired w/a high rise bottom, but w/o the excess ↔️ bulk below⬇️.
Of course, I like a light topper to go w/that. Something the skims my backside. Soft short sleeve shackets, waistcoats, gilets, & duster length dresses w/a center button placket work from Spring through Fall. Blazers & trench coats work great from late Fall to early Spring.
Frankly, I despise😡 most lady Chanel style & other cropped jackets on me. They have to hit me just right. Otherwise, these cuts seem to
      🗣shout: 🎉taa daa🎉... here are your XW hips🤣.

I think the “avoid,” “be cautious” advice irritates me because it focuses all our attention on WHAT OTHERS WILL/MIGHT THINK. There is no way I am going to be able to please every member of society who happens to see me on a given day. So instead I will decide what makes me feel good and what works for my lifestyle, and wear that with confidence. I have come too far to devote any neurons to placating strangers. If someone thinks I look “old” or “ridiculous” or whatever, that would be their problem.

Thank you for the advice, I appreciate your opinion. Here is mine-Fashion looks good when women wear it with confidence. It doesn’t matter if it’s classic or trendy. Find your look and live content in it. Wear what gives you the ‘I feel sexy‘ look; stand up tall, hold your head up, and be yourself. It you put on a garment that doesn’t hang right for your body type, take it off and find one that does. We’ve lived 50 years; show younger women they too; can be beautiful and their own original gorgeous self.

Great report as usual, Leonie. Thumbs up! As for the trends.
    1) Cardigans-There are plenty of hip cardigans out there. I recently purchased Dressed in LaLa's
alien oversized cardigan; violet with chartreuse alien faces and black eyes. When late fall hits, I'll be wearing it with both a short straight skirt and knee boots, and also my slightly wide-legged, high waisted light blue-wash Mango jeans of three years ago.
    2) Leopard Print- I'll never give it up. I've been wearing it since I was a kid. I have a whole section devoted to just leopard prints; coats, jackets, sweatshirts, caps, berets, handbags, etc. My oldest leopard coat is a designer one that I bought in 1980 and is still totally relevant.
    3) Low Rise jeans-never liked them and will never buy them. But, my wide legged denim Bermuda shorts of this season are low rise, but that couldn't be helped. I just belt them.
    4) Puff Ball Hems-Yikes! End of story.
    5) Plaid- It's not going anywhere with me just as leopard isn't going anywhere. I recently ordered a couple of Vivienne Westwood pieces. I've worn plaid since elementary school and last year sent in my measurements online and had two custom kilts made from an overseas company and had the finished products mailed out to me. Fabulous!
    6) The Flock- That one is for the birds. But, I'm not totally against the feathers as I have had a few pieces with them in past decades, but they are difficult to maintain.
    7) Cropped Jackets/Puffer Jackets-I bought a cropped puffer recently, but it didn't work out as it was way too heavy and the cropping was strange. It's now at resale as it was a final sale item. But, I have other cropped jackets and they're fine. It depends on the style, weight of the fabric, and if they're a puffer style, how puffed they are.
As for what one wears, I've always said that it depends on one's personality, one's style, and a lot of time where one lives and the folks that one is around. I'm in my late 60s and feel comfortable in all of my clothes no matter the style or the colors and many are vibrant ones.
    Greetings from Los Angeles

I love puffs, cream puffs, that is, but not on my clothes! As for jackets, they have to (just) cover my (high-rise) waistband, no shorter. I don’t see the point of any jacket that exposes the midriff, especially in puffers. I hate puffed sleeves and tiers on skirts and dresses, I wish these two design details would die already! I’m not buying them. I need sophisticated, adult clothing styles, not party dresses for 5-year olds.

I'm not a big fan of cardis as I've gotten older. You could leave upbuttoned and twist the ends into a knot. or leave unbuttoned and criss cross each side and belt ir or tuck it. But I think cardis, low block heels and some flats among other things look better on young ladies as sophisticated. Puffers that are cropped is a no for me. Some of this is not just because of age but also body type and personal style

I’m over fashion influencers telling women of a certain age to be careful and cautious (code words for tone down your look). The message is it’s time for you to fade into the background.

I'm 59 years old with 6 grown children and 10 grandchildren. I love the cropped shirts and bombers. Cardigans are warming but must be worn according to the times. Tied up with corners, twisted, off one shoulder, yes even cropped. But never tied around the waist when you get too hot. :)

Wonderful guidelines, Leonie! As to myself at age 78 I am actually happy to see the 'high rise waist lines' coming down to at least mid waist as gravity would have it, I've lost height in my torso and my bust line certainly isn't same but still have long legs so otherwise look like 'Gumby' when wearing the former. Regarding many of the other styles (exceptions - tops cropped to the waist and plaids) I shall leave them to my Grand Daughters.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on fall trends. At 5'2", I like cropped jackets that end at the waist, not extra crop that can enhance a fuller bust. I think adding a bit of a trend keeps you looking modern, so for me, less looks more chic. NO to low rise anything and to feathers on clothes! How do you clean those items? Maybe a purse 👛 might be an option.

  • @yensid4294
    @yensid4294 Місяць тому +6

If by cropped you mean bolero or tummy baring ten NO. If you mean a shorter (high hip length) fit n flare style jacket/top to wear with high waisted items to get a short over long prportion without having to tuck, then YES. I don't really like the oversized boxy "boyfriend" jacket look (on myself) I need waist emphasis but in the right way. A very short boxy or straight jacket/top doesn't work for me. Same for anything long & shapeless. No cardis for me unless they have a very feminine retro shape.

  • @nancyg.3536
    @nancyg.3536 26 днів тому

You give good advice. If you also categorized by body type it might be helpful. Im a rectangle and LOVE the boxy, shorter (not super short) sweaters and puffers, as they give the impression that I have a waist. This works better if you’re a thinner rectangle without a lot of tummy issues to camouflage, but even then, there are tricks. I like dressing edgier and with more flair as I age. Every day is a day worth celebrating, and looking frumpy is definitely NOT on my daily agenda!

Perfect timing on this video. Thank you. I am 56 year-old teacher who routinely wears cardigans. I just ordered some cardigans in a size smaller than I typically wear to attempt to look a bit more stylish. I think oversized clothes can be a problem of women in our age group as well unless styled strategically.

I limit animal prints to shoes bags and scarves. I no longer look good with more animal print footage.
I like oversized merino wool granny cardigan over straight slim jeans. I love the nerd vibe.
I am 5’3” therefore I am attracted to slightly cropped tops and pants. They make my proportion better without alterations.
My figure is kind of shapeless with shorter arms. I don’t look good in puffed sleeves. I love the romantic vibe but I can’t pull it off.

It's exploded in popularity in Toronto (Canada) for some reason, but the nice thing about it is that the length is not the point, the bubble is. So I've been seeing people mostly choose the length that suits them, even all the way to the ankle. It's actually an easier look to pull off than a bodycon dress/skirt for those of us who are bottom heavy.

It is good to grow older. We don't have to follow so many trends we might have done in the past because it does not suit us anymore. Just think positive about that issue. I will wear cardigan in a fun way and I will I did😊! Wear more of leoprint especially the soft Leo print. I don't think there are neutral i think there are a statement not a neutral . I have started to like them in a careful way. . ..to tell you the true leoprint are not my favorite prints. I have bought Leo print in the summer time in beige and light green. I love that skirt. It is a leoprint in a different colour that look more fresh and youthful than the usual Leo peint in creme black and brown

My resault is to buy a belt in leopard and team it with black trousers and a black blazer with white details. In fact the tip you gave in the video. And I had the same thoughts with feathers and the other trends this autum too. So thanks for your useful tips on how to go with the trend but not looking aging. /Marie from Sweden

Saying that, ive always worn what i wanted to dont really care what o p. wear.

Completely with you on the cardigans, Leoni, for me personally anyway. Each to their own. It's a fine line for me to look frumpy and I totally want to avoid it, especially as my bust has become bigger now I'm over 60. But with the right ones for me, I'll rock 'em. With jeans, I find that that high rise (which I love) just accentuates my stomach but the mid rise sits on it and holds it right in place :) I think we need more images of older women wearing the styles you're suggesting as a tweak to those covered in this video rather than the younger ones, I feel I'd relate to that more - however, I'm aware there is probably very little of those images to go off! A styling edge is the way to go, I love that.

The soft shoulder on a cardigan is the fail, it makes you look “soft” - @ 43, 5’3 , 116lbs, they make me look heavier, older and slumped no matter what I pair them with - so no thx - agree! When they WERE in style every fall I’d try to wear them and blahhhh -

Spot on as usual❤! I have tried leopard print in the past and it was too fussy for me and I’ll never go with low rise waisted pants again. Honestly they were uncomfortable and hard to style anyway. I agree with the cardigan style skewing older and that it can be pulled off if styled properly. Fussy clothes just aren’t for me but it’s not for lack of trying, it’s just that learning about myself has taken a lot of trial and error.

I agree with you on pretty much all of these. I do love the newer, more sophisticated cardi shape that's nipped in at the waist - the Jenni Kayne Cooper cardigan is my absolute fave! But cropped jackets, low rise jeans and feathered pieces - it's an absolute no from me!
