This song digs down underneath the myth of the American dream to show us what America is really like, at least for the regular people: broken dreams and unreachable goals
One Saturday afternoon I was sitting in a small bar in the Southend of Louisville ,KY ,about 6 or 7 other people just hav'n a beer. We hear the roar of motorcycles outside and in walks John Mellencamp and about 10 of his friends. The owners and most of the staff lived in southern Indiana ,just across the Ohio river. They had a framed picture of John playing a guitar by the pool tables that was taken when he was young and before he made it big.
They stayed about an hour and he bought everyone a couple of beers and was the most humble and coolest guy ever . I will always remember that day for ever !!!
John's style of singing or genre is called heartland rock as he sang a lot about blue-collar, farmers & truckers themes. He has had so many hits especially in the 80's such as "Hurts So Good", "Crumblin' Down", "Small Town", "Lonely Ol' Night", "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A.", "Paper In Fire", "Cherry Bomb" etc.
Oh, I have to hear cherry bomb again. When he went from Cougar to Mellencamp again.
I think small town is my favorite but I can't say for sure cus I like them all!❤
@@aprilnewsome1932 I love his Trouble No More album. It's mostly blues covers, and traditional songs, but he makes em his own. His cover of Robert Johnson's Stones in My Passway is great.
I can remember when You could stop a clock. Mean he remembers she was so young and beautiful she could stop time . Now they are old.
He’s a rabbit hole worth exploring
Rain on the Scarecrow is highly recommended 👍
So, not so much a revelry in America, rather the disappointment of reality vs. the dreams we began as a child. Simple resignation of what is vs. what was envisioned. They are kind of dark thoughts.
hes got a bunch of Great songs- "Rain on the scarecrow" is a good one
Yup
My vote goes to "Rain On The Scarecrow. " heavy lyrics.
My vote too. Powerful
I've tried for years to get reactors to take on that song
Oh yeah this is a powerful track.
Oh my goodness!!. I adore that song!.
@@jamestate5059yes!!!
As a middle aged African American female, I love John Mellencamp's music. It was popular when I was in high school and college. I'd go see him in concert if he came to NE Ohio.
Love Mellencamp! " I need a lover " is a GREAT TUNE!
Long version
My interpretation of the lyrics She could stop a clock means that she was a looker (beautiful) when she was younger. That's my take on it anyway.
Great line.
“Cookin up the evening slop…” was slang for supper.
Lonely Ol Night and Paper and Fire. There are so many.
I add my vote to the others requesting "rain on the scarecrow". My personal favorite is "minutes to memories"
Although I admittedly am not familiar with his album tracks (usually the best work), only his many radio hits, I have alway gotten the impression that his lyrics address the hopes and dreams, experiences and disappointments, and lives in general of the "forgotten" majority of middle Americans. I respect his work and the causes he has contributed to which seems to focus on the problems of the working class people and farmers.
Rain on the Scarecrow , Play Guitar , Hurt So Good are all good reacts 👍
Oh yes another great song. Love John's music. He my fellow Hoosier 😅 live about 50 miles from where he grew up. Anything from the Scarecrow album is good. Small Town. ❤❤
John Mellencamp. One of the greatest singer songwriters of our generation. An absolute legend!
Based on a true story. The house sits on the south side of Indianapolis off I-65. John said he used to drive past it all the time and the old man always sat on his front porch. John used to wave to him and he’d wave right back.
He's a RNR HOFer for a reason, great singer and always paid homage to the music he grew up listening to.
When he says I remember when you could stop a clock, he means cuz you were so good looking. Expanding on the thought that anyone who saw you would stop to look at you even a clock
Jack & Diane
❤
Jack and Diane is another good song of his. ❤
A totally underrated great american song writer, a poet with a guitar.
I love John! I’ve seen him multiple times in concert. He is fantastic live!!
John "Cougar" Mellencamp is a musical genius in my eyes!! Love this guy's music. Great stuff! Rain on the scarecrow is one of my favorite!
I am so short on time Biz, but you know I love and support you and I will always be here for you. Please dig deeper into Mellencamp. He's as real as it gets... peace, light and love...💞
I'm from Germany and there is no other place I would rather be than right here in the good old US of A!
It's a metaphor for the lower class in America. Similar to Born in the USA, it's the opposite of the American Dream.
Such a great storyteller! Great music. My favorite-Hurt So Good.
Great catalog
This is also when he rebelled against the music industry calling him John Cougar and used his actual last name.
John is a co-founder of Farm Aid, he sings a lot about the rural midwest. Yes, this is meant to be critical of the widening gap between rich and poor. Check out R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.!
My favorite John Mellencamp is when he was John Cougar Mellencamp. Saw him in concert in the 90's in Indy, great concert.
Great reaction! Love his music. Lots of great suggestions. I'd say Cherry Bomb and Hurts So Good. Keep going! Thanks for all you do!
Great song. American beauty is the theme. We are all lucky to be here
Rain on the Scarecrow would be a cool one to do.
Hey darling, I can remember when you could stop a clock. It means she was so good-looking that even a clock had to stop and take notice
Rain on the Scarecrow, Rumble Seat, Minutes to Memories just fantastic songs
For some reason, I didn't like his music at first. But then he kinda grew on me and I've been a huge fan ever since. I think this song is the one that first grabbed my attention.
The Paper in Fire album is the first CD I ever purchased.
My favorite song of his. Such a friendly, unassuming wisdom.
The old saying is "You're lookin' so good, you could stop a clock!" 🤙😎
John has a real social conscience and is not afraid to share his views. Love him.
I dont think he is celebrating America. He is pointing out the inequities in society, Little pink houses aint mansions and some are freer than others.
John writes about ordinary people living their lives in the USA - ALL of us. Thanks for your reaction.
One of my favorites from him.I always interpreted the song as being about everyone in America living the American dream regardless of your race or class...equality for everyone....'ain't that American for YOU and Me'.Pink houses is his metaphor for the American dream.
My favorite by him and I love them all
John is from where I live Seymour Indiana. My husband went to school with John, the video pink houses was filmed in Jackson County, and the last scenes at an old grocery store was about 2 miles from where I live right now. So enjoy John and see where I live. Definitely farm country.🔥🔥🔥🔥
GREAT BAND AND PERFOMANCE
Yep, let's get this America back.
Yea, it is a whole lot deeper than the upbeat song that you hear at first. It breaks down the America that is than the America that others perceive from the outside looking in.
Just dive in the waters great !
Thank you for understanding 😎
"i remember when you could stop a clock"...meaning he remembers when his woman was young and beautiful
Good pop song and its grinds deeper into you the longer you know this tune. Sarcasm with a sugar shade of soul.
John has always been my favorite male solo artist. I love all his music.
Remember when the world lost it’s mind when he dropped the “Cougar” from his name? 😂
A celebration of the tragic. Keep 'em coming.
IMHO Mellencamps best song. And he's written some great songs.
The key lyrics here is the lines you emphasize, starting with "And there's winners..". Whithout those lines this would "only" been a great song. Those lines makes the song One-of-a-kind....
*I can remember when yould, starve or plow" was what I remember.
John Cougar Mellencamp, where all the cantaloupe and honeydew go for vacation 😊
Great rabbit hole to go down!
Walls. Hurt So Good, Jack n Diane
Some people think that it's a patriotic song because it says the word America
He started out as John Cougar! Then added Mellencamp and dropped the “Cougar” . I love his early music! Thanks Biz 👵🏼💜☮️
He said his wife was so fine She could stop a clock when she passed. He remembers
"Hey darlin' \ I can remember when you could stop a clock." -- She once looked so good even a clock would stop to look at her. For a taste of Mellencamp's early sound, check out "I Need A Lover", from 1978, more rock less country there. And for more from the "Pink Houses" era, check out "Crumblin’ Down" and "Authority Song", which sandwiched "Pink Houses" on side one of his 1983 album, Uh-Huh. Barn burners all.
❤
Have you reacted to his I NEED A LOVER yet? It was one of his earliest hits and was all over the radio.
The soundtrack to my life and times 💯👍🤘🌈
My wife, who was my girlfriend then😊, and I have a little bit different perspective on this one than we did in the mid 1980s. Hehe we may be "boomers" but we're also the cool rock and roll parents. We took the kids to see Santana, Vevet Revolver, Allice In Chains and Rush 2x among others. So we get an "OK Boomer" pas💯🤣🤣
John Mellencamp was my first music obsession ❤😊
He’s got a lot of great, even iconic songs.. But he captured something special, here.. The moment, the feeling?.. Something..
Damn bro, if my eyes were closed i would have pegged you for Iron Mike..all good, thanks for this, peace
Filmed in Northern Indiana
Costa Rica, Jamaica…, But Dubai is no bueno in the Summer 🥵
Kenny, assaulting the drums
……another great reaction Biz…. You hit the nail on the head !!! 🔥
John cougar the best man
Would you do a review of the album (yes, in the days of albums) Scarecrow. Its a story.
Ya Biz this song's like Born in The USA. Sounds rah-rah on the surface but quite critical when you listen closely.
You must do Steve Earle, “Someday”. Official video.
Back in the day we didn't have garbage disposals so after supper you cleaned up the evening slop or scrapps to feed the hogs or whatever animals you had. It was a different time and more simple as well as people got along regardless of race. There was no amazon, twitter, face book and I don't believe many cell phones. Life was more simpler, hell it hasn't been that long ago and so much has changed and not for the best from what I see.
This song is more about how we Americans are okay with the plight of our situation in society. Black man is okay with an interstate (highway) running through his front yard and he's luke, yea but I got my little Pink House not even realizing no one would want an interstate running in your yard. He sums it up by say more people what do they know? They work and are content with a vacation in Mexico when all the while it's the bills and the pills, or booze whatever your vice will kill you in the end. Were not living for ourselves and we are satisfied with the status quo, he saying there got to be a different way.
Check out his songs Small Town, Authority Song and R.O.C.K in the U.S.A.
Indiana ❤
❤❤😊
It's actually a very cynical song. Mellencamp has said so.
ua-cam.com/video/uyGTEXe95ZQ/v-deo.html "Now More Than Ever" ua-cam.com/video/bTK1W5dIljw/v-deo.html "Minutes to Memorizers" ua-cam.com/video/VC7fC_oSXhY/v-deo.html "Jackie Brown"
might me one of our greatest lyricists.
Do "Jack and Dianne", "Cherry bomb" and Authority Song. Please.
Try out/ ain't even done with the night
Hand to hold on to
Paper in fire
Lonely ol night
Authority song
There's nothing wrong with criticizing America doesn't mean you hate it
Cause the 😎💪🙏❤️🇺🇸SIMPLE MAN baby
pays the bills ,the thrills and the pills that kill !
Ain't that the TRUTH !
No, he is actually saying how we identify is a fiction.
Along with Born in the USA this song is misunderstood by the majority of people.
Its message is the US promises so much for its people and too often doesnt deliver for them.
It's a ' working class' song
Song was made back in 80 junior high school day's, party in woods john playing his music on radio.
Rap crap was just coming out
(Runing Dmc) never did like rap crap.....
Cherry Bomb is another good song to react to. Its about looking back on when you were younger.
Johnny Cougar
Research the story behind this song.
As a Canadian this is what I think America has the potential to be. Rand Paul 2028
John Mellencamp is definitely great, he’s sings patriotic American songs without being political; Paper in Fire is another great song
This song is the complete opposite of patriotic.
Sometimes misinterpreted as patriotic with their anthemic sounds and American imagery, his songs are more often critiques of American life rather than celebrations of it. “Pink Houses,” especially, holds a mirror to the distorted vision of the “American Dream.”
“This one has been misconstrued over the years because of the chorus-it sounds very rah-rah. But it’s really an anti-American song,” Mellencamp continued of “Pink Houses.” “The American dream had pretty much proven itself as not working anymore. It was another way for me to sneak something in.”
Mellencamp isn't political? You obviously haven't listened to much of his stuff.
Here's a sample for you:
"So, black lives matter
Who we trying to kid
Here's an easy target
Don't matter, never did
Crosses burning
Such a long time ago
Four hundred years and we still don't, let it go"
"Easy Target"
Since you like "Paper in Fire", take a look at its lyrics:
There's a good life
Right across the green fields
And each generation
Stares at it from afar
But we keep no check
On our appetites
So the green fields turn to brown
Like paper in fire
