- A London self guided walking tour is a great, cheap way to see interesting places off the beaten path, like Fitzrovia and Charlotte Street.
This neighbourhood is full of great history and has also become a cool place to go out drinking or eating in the evening. It's pretty close to Oxford street but has its own young crowd.
On this walk Joolz Guides takes you down Goodge Street, Tottenham Court Road, Charlotte Street, Rathbone Place and Berners Street.
You'll learn about the Berners Street Hoax, Gustavus Vassa (Olaudah Equiano) who survived a slave ship and lived in this area after writing a book of his experiences.
There is Pollock's Toy Museum, street food Hanway street and its hidden away bars and clubs like Sevilla Mia.
Also learn about the Fitzrovia Bohemians, George Orwell, Dylan Thomas and the pubs they drank in.
There is also lots more in this excellent guided walking tour finishing with a drink at the Nordic Bar.

As a true cockney, living in exile on the south coast (Hamble), I have watched many of Joolz guides on different parts of London with fascination. There is so much to this great city that is little known. In this time of Covid thank you for the great entertainment.

when i went to prague, their main square had been completely overtaken by macondalds burger kings etc. so sad

I used to work off the Tottenham Court Road. I used to know all the pubs etc ie "the Fitzrovia". It was full of camera and electronic shops.....nowadays its full of restaurants
Excellent post Jools, as always. I worked on the Goodge st group of underground stations at Tottenham court road (TCR) for many years 1989 -2016, one day my group manager who at the time had his office above Goodge street station visited TCR after a meeting with a Fitzrovia action group who were demanding that Goodge street stn be renamed FITZROVIA, and my manager had agreed to the request provided that they (the action group) paid for the out of pocket expenses attached to doing so, they were very happy until my manager explained that not only did it mean paying for the signs outside and on the platform to be remade but every map on every wall on every station including the stove enamelled ones of which there are several on each Northern line station and every pamphlet to be redesigned and reprinted, all ticket machines would have to be reprogrammed, train automated speaker systems also, as well as any incidentals like station stamps and and any paperwork with Goodge street named on ......they left very unhappy. Happy days keep rocking Joolz, love the posts.

I've had to say, "Speaking of Hitler, my grand grandmother ...." her husband, my grandfather, whom passed before my birth was a German soldier.

I worked first at an advertising agency and then at Newman Street branch Post Office in the 1970s and recall my time in Fitzrovia as a very privileged time in such an elegant, diverse, historic and vibrant area. A town within a town and character and individuality in almost every side street. Splendid tour and account.

No, not the only one here who always associates Goodge St with Donovan's song Sunny Goodge St~ also performed by Marianne Faithfull an others~ I always hear the song in my head when Googe St is mentioned. Certainly never associate it with "Boy George' although I am well aware of his music in the 80's ~ never a fan .

When out walking in cities look upwards, above the shop frontages, then you see the old buildings, I used to wander round looking up at the flats above and wonder what stories they could tell of days long past, especially in Spitalfields, Whitechapel, Liverpool street areas,
never a dull moment as usual - Well Done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Much of his early life was spent in the coffee shops of Fitzrovia.

Beryl Bainbridge did a novel called Young Hitler. A friend's Mother is the only person I've ever met who saw Django Reinhardt when he came to the states in the late 40s, touring with Duke Ellington.
Really good video Julian. It's an area of London that I haven't really visited. Looks as if it's worth a visit after watching your escapades.
