Dangerous Wall Demolition - Doing It Ourselves

  • A wall in the upstairs of the cottage that was meant to stay in place, has come loose from its fixings and is in danger of collapse. this means more dirty work to demolish and remove it, luckily with Dad and Sean around there is nothing that the three of us can't do to put it right, and stop any serious head injuries should it collapse in the future.

My name is Michael Petherick and I live with my family at Chateau de la Basmaignee in north west France.
My brother and his fiancé bought this building with some inheritance money three years ago and we are slowly restoring it to live in, and run as a business.
It’s always a financial struggle to keep the place going and we have to work hard to keep our heads above water, but we love it and wouldn’t have It any other way.
When they knew that they were buying the château, my brother asked me if I would like to move over and take part in their new adventure... so I packed my bags, gave up my life in England and moved here to help bring this place back to life.
We do all the renovations ourselves including construction, decorating and collecting antique furniture that we buy cheaply to restore. Our goal is to fill the château with beauty and life as it once was.
I have a passion for history, art and all things old.
These videos are a series of stories about my life and experiences living in a French castle
I’ll be showing all aspects of life here, from renovation and DIY, to crafts and baking, art, daily life and a bit of fun thrown in for good measure. There’s much more to see and our journey is still just beginning.

I would put a beautiful banister upstairs instead of putting a wall back in place. It wouldn't be as as private but it would stay open and the heat would be able to come upstairs easily. Would be less cost and still would have a beautiful look.

Put up a curtain rod over the banister for a bit more privacy when company is over, but can be opened and closed as needed.

I think a good thing for heat circulation, would be to not board over the old chimney hole from the previous fire place. Either cover it with a vent, or build a faux fireplace around it to make a multipurpose shelf/vent thing. Its a perfectly placed hole right over the furnace so it'd make most sense to have the heat come up there.

Loving your Dad Michael! He’s the Man! But I love how he doesn’t show slowly down. 👏🏼👏🏼
Loving the progress and so much going on. Way to go and it just seems that you may get your wish to cook in your cottage. 🤞🏼

Wow, what amazingly hard workers they are! But when you're excited to wake up everyday because you have purpose & passion it does make it easier to work so much. Because it's a labor of love! At least that's how I feel this year since we bought a little acreage & little farmhouse. Lol

Love the stone work to the interior of this building. I would be inclined to remove all the plaster and treat the stone and keep it natural with lots of copper on show.

Our friends & helpers demolished a wall in our 'new' bathroom. It was so much work. First break it (too dusty & heavy work) & then clean up bricks. Next week it'll be the floor. 😖It'll be amazing when everything is done & set again in place. But until it's finished there is so much to do. That's why I like watching your channel. It gives me strength to do it ourselves☺
