After playing catch-up on your vlogs as only found you by accident and now staying with you. I was wondering if you have talked about headphones and pin-pointers
I've so many questions about them as there are so many available if it's at all possible could you do a vlog or 2 on them. I appreciate that it's something that may take time but it's something that doesn't seem to be covered by people doing detecting as it's all about the brand of detector.

Great video and thoughts on this. 😁 When it comes to a drone digging and metal detecting, you are correct in the fact that a single drone cannot accomplish this. However, a flying drone could quite easily transmit a coordinate to another land based drone that is built for digging and that drone could move to the target and dig it up. The real trick I suppose is how does the digging drone know what it is trying to dig up. It could figure that out by metal composition analysis, but that still requires it to be able to detect the difference between a lump of dirt and another object. I think that is the real stumbling block right now.

I have much experience with building and flying drones. Yes, there may come a time when they may be able to metal detect, but personally I wouldn't lose sleep worrying if our MD hobby is under threat. The technology for that to happen is way out in the future. Even then, such a drone and its specialized detector will be extremely expensive and limited to wide open, relatively flat areas.
Personally, I'm more concerned about learning how to get the best from my Manticore, that is current reality.

Drones are great for other aspects of metal detecting like research and field over views. But I think actual detecting is a ground operation. Robot wars type of tech with roomba avoidance software and not digging but logging gps locals and signal sounds with VDI #. DIGGING IS THE BEST PART! Imagine ACRES of land with all the signals maps out for you already
Coil swing is easy with just gearing the robot wheels to swing it horizontal. I have put a little thought in this. It might be accomplished with just a cell phone tech nowadays....

We work with Boston dynamics robotic dogs. They have lidar scanners hooked up currently. I can probably add detecting module but it won't be cheap . You can play who let the dogs out while it scans for 100k. Currently deploy these on construction sites to monitor human safety. The battery will last Alot longer on the dog. You would also get a better scan from the ground ..dogs like spot would be ideal for detecting large fields . Beach salt may pose an issue on longevity.

I used to work in a lab which made small drones about 10 years ago and remember seeing this video when doing a drone mine detector project. The problem is you need motion to detect and it's difficult to get a repeatable swing without losing controls, especially with the coil acting as a very far offset pendulum. It would work with a PI detector that didn't require motion, assuming you could follow the terrain very precisely to keep a good low coil to ground offset. With PI you wouldnt be able to discard iron though. There's also the issue of noise with occasional false beeps, so you'd either have to stop and double sense each signal to verify it (or map the field multiple times to check for repeatability) or you'll have an error and noise prone signal map, or turn the sensitivity way down to ensure only real objects were found. If you did that you'd only find large objects near the surface though. All possible, but the tech just wasn't good enough back then. Good to see it again though 😊

Nice topic. I think that air drone metal detectos will be developed more for military or business (de-mining fields, hazard areas, to check underground structures or pipe/cable lines on difficut to reach terrain). For the hobby, I see more a land unmanned vehicle with an MD that will mark possible targets, or better an underwater unmanned vehicle that will scan the seabed with an md and pick up the target (maybe a system that will suck it in a bag). So you stay dry and don't risk your life underwater. I know there are some with a camera and a claw, adding an md wouldn't be too difficult.

Hi Merrill, interesting subject. Aerial metal detecting has been used since at least the 1960s to find Ore deposits. On pasture a wheeled drone could take the hard work out of scanning for hoards and on flat cultivated land or flat terrain. The flying drones could easily be stabilised but I am not saying how! As for looking for small items we are safe for a while 👍

I relic hunt in the UK and I dig anything non-ferrous unless there are a lot of known objects such as shotgun shells where I will skip them if they are the right size and number. I might miss a good target that way once in a while but when I have limited time to detect a field, being able to cover more ground is of value... but for the most part, I am listening for tone and attack to decide whether to dig. When I started, that was the only way to do it and it is still the best.

Fascinating stuff Merrill. I see this as being most useful to STEM applications but eventually hobbyists will grab it and probably have a man on the ground who can then follow up and dig the markers that a drone puts down to me that would be the most beneficial and expeditious way to locate and retrieve targets. Looking forward to seeing this industry evolve.

Interesting stuff. Several years ago I watched a Discovery Channel show about diamond mining. A guy in Canada was convinced the diamonds were in old lava shafts called Kimberlite Pipes. He actually mounted a type of metal detector on an airplane and was able to use it to pinpoint where the Pipes were. Several years later I was on Venice Beach in Fl. when a gentleman approached me and we began talking detectors. He shared that he used to detect from an airplane. I realized it was the fellow from the show I watched. At that time he had a thriving mining business at the sites he had discovered from the plane. I can't remember the exact dates he did this but I believe it was the early 80's. I can only believe the technology has exponentially blossomed in this field as it has in others. Can't wait to see what the future holds! Thanks for sharing.

Professional treasure hunters could help themselves with drones in hard-to-reach areas. They could locate a large amount of metal and later check what is hidden there. Drones with lidar and thermal cameras would be even more effective.

Good morning Merrill, I was asked about this some time ago. The last drone video is nice but there are some flaws to it. The frequencies used to metal detect will let you see big objects, It will miss the small objects like coins or buttons. We know the low frequencies will detect deep larger objects. But here is the thing, no matter how advanced your metal detector drone would get, high frequencies do have ground penetrating limitations.

Less thinking .. more digging Merrill. 🙂You will never see a drone finding coins, rings, buttons, etc. in a field, around a house or on a beach. Too small of targets. Large objects .. sure. If you can miss a coin when you are walking over it, how is a drone going to find it flying higher than your coil is on the ground. This is like the flying car I was promised 50 years go. I have yet to see anyone come pick me up for a ride in one of those yet.

ANYWAY, DRONES! I’ve thought about this a while back and being 70 years old, I don’t know that I’ll get to see it come to life. A drone that COULD be capable of finding gold from the air would not only be priceless but could destroy the economy of the whole planet! The Deus 2 WS6 ergonomics w/o remote are stellar. The future might be to add value to that concept by providing verbal audio of TID. A computer generated voice simply tells you the TID number or TID range. All of the data is already present so what is needed is a range of voice intrusion preceding, following or on top of the signal tone. This could be applied in various offerings to improve ergonomics; looking at one's screen while detecting can be harmful to your cervical spine/subluxation. trap/neck/shoulder pain etc... -TB

First of all, my daydream of somehow developing a drone just crashed and broke a plastic propeller. 😄 Nevertheless, I don't think these will replace muddy boots on the ground for the near to medium future.
I could however imagine a scenario where a private company could attempt to con a government to fund their work, especially if they that have a group of vitriolic 'archaeologists' already against M. detectorists (such as is the case in France). All they'd have to do, would be to convince/fool them into vehemently believing that the technology was impressive and detailed, and then that we as a community could be disposed of and banned. I use the word con, because it would simply not be cost effective (agreeing with your point on not being able to say more than there's a phase shift), burn up a lot of operator time and heat-maps would still need manual investigation and digging. In the end I think that all-terrain land drones would be more viable (battery-wise) if motor-generated EMF factors could be cancelled out.
If the technology became more accessible to our community (as well as people less scrupulous about permissions), I could otherwise imagine a drone heat-map being drawn up on dark nights whilst people slept, and where locals weren't twitchy about alien invasions.

That is really cool! I have played around with some drones in the past and have some basic UA-cam videos on my channel. Nothing spectacular. It was a short-lived hobby. My main hobby is metal detecting. I’ve been a Detectorist since I was nine years old and won the whites XLT spectrum in 1995 at a club hunt where I found the prize token. I have recently upgraded to a whites, DFX, but I am in the market and dream of getting a equinox. I have been filming some of my live digs and could use a little help on how you edit the videos sense yours are perfectly put together in my opinion. I have footage from my hunt yesterday where I found five silver half dollars. Two 1964 Kennedy half dollars and three walking liberty half dollars. The footage is great quality would love to know how you edit yours and hopefully you can check out the final video. I have a little honey hole that is filled with silver half dollars and will be starting my Metal detecting channel on this account with those videos from yesterday being the first ones I upload. If you have any pointers, please let me know and I hope you get to see my videos of these beautiful silver coins I have found. Keep up the good work I watch every single one of your videos.

Exactly this... These drones cannot scan like we do, they will only detect very large objects. To scan closer to the surface they would be better off using an autonomous vehicle. I don't see anyone treasure hunting autonomously in the next 50 years... I don't think there is a market for it and the price of entry would be a barrier

  • @bronxbombermetaldetectingd4242

You can't break the laws of physics.
These drone metal detectors are using old metal detecting technology, which are only capable of detecting large objects very deep. They have improved the efficiency of this type of detecting, nothing more. This includes GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar). I was told that XP is working on a GRP detector. I don't know if it's for the consumer or industry?
One other important issue is wattage. If they increase the power of the electromagnetic field, it will have an effect on medical devices (pacemakers), telecommunications, etc.
    I really enjoy your videos!

The problem with that drone is it only looking for big objects it's not going to see a small coin or ring. You can get metal detectors that will show you the shape of the object in a 3D configuration, like the Nokta Invenio and my Lorenz DeepMax Z2. But what you really need is a Drone that can do a Geophysics Magnetometry survey and a metal detecting survey at the same time (my Lorenz DeepMax Z2 can do subsurface mapping). I have had some of my metal detecting permissions surveyed by a magnetometer and intend to then combine the two surveys together in Quantum GIS (a free Program). QGIS can merge and blend the two images seamlessly together. I will then be able to see where Dwellings once stood by the concentration of metal objects in a localised area in relation to what can be seen by the magnetometry survey.
But for the future I'm trying to get my head around what Sarah Parcak (Space Archaeologist) is doing with Multispectral imagery: Multispectral imagery is a type of satellite imagery that is collected in multiple wavelengths of light. Space archaeologists can use multispectral imagery to identify different types of materials, such as stone, soil, and vegetation, which can help them locate ancient features that might be hidden under the ground.
Because then I will not need a Magnetometry survey.

Hey Merrill, the ring display cases turned out really awesome!!! But, I think drones has a wide range of different types of great uses, but as for metal detecting? I think that it will never take the place of a human being to operate the metal detector in the correct fashion, the human body is still superior for this task. I do see drone metal detectors being used for locating landmines and such, but then again for locating coins and rings, you have to swing the coil back and forth, left and right closely to the ground and the drone cannot do that. Besides, where's the sport on that idea anyway! It would be like playing golf without the holes. Thanks for the latest news on metal detecting bro. Greg the Egg.

Still, it’s like when online shopping moved in and home town businesses moved out. We don’t want the joy of detecting to be reduced by machines and laziness.

What I find interesting is not the drone, but the metal detector used by SPH. They claim it can find targets 10 to 15 meters deep. Add to that the distance above the ground it safely can fly, and you have a very deep sensing detector! They should put that technology in a hand held unit…just remember to bring the big shovel 😂

  • @testboga5991
    @testboga5991 Рік тому

Hi, don't worry, this will stay confined to commercial applications - maybe beach hunter s need to be careful. Drones cause a lot of EMI, so the coil needs to be far away from the drone. This in turn creates a lever, which interferes with the drone's stabilization if the coil hits the grass or the ground, requiring a significant distance to the ground. It's also unwieldy. Plus - you get only one pass per flyover. How many times do you sweep the coil for a regular target? Who wants to have a drone fly over the field five times before digging? Mine detection, where you have a clearly defined area, low discrimination need and a lot of time - maybe. Magnetometers? Yes. Regular hobby stuff? Nope. Drones are like 3D printers: a lot of hype but usefulness only for very specific applications.
Also AI has little use, as the signals are easily analyzed by traditional signal processing.

It's a concept yes. I thought of several concepts but then I realized all the time and money it would take to have a working machine I realize I would never get the return on the investment. No matter how good a drone is the bottom line is detectors technology requires a slow overlapping sweep over unlevel terrain. So it basically can't cover more then a person sweeping. They might pull it off looking for a sunken ship but they're not digging below trash under a root while pulling nails with pinpointers. They would need to dig evasive holes even if they got close. With all the weight of everything to detect, dig and then store it the weight would practically require a helicopter lol. Then how do they fill the hole? And that's even more equipment. By the time they ever got to this point if it was even possible we'll already have dug so much it would never allow them return their investment never the less make a profit.
