@@pattychan3941 2:00 what's wrong with this fic
@@-chenlanying5818 I'm going to assume you aren't being sarcastic and answer you honestly. I have absolutely no idea how knowledgeable you are in fandom or fanfic in particular, so I'm gonna write out the whole, detailed explanation. The short(er) answer is the first paragraph, and the others just go more in depth. Feel free to stop reading once you get the gist.
The fic at 2:00 was written in 1st person (so using I, me, my, etc.), which is a red flag for a lot of people. Usually when the author writes themselves directly into the story, it's a sign that it's 1. written by an immature writer, 2. a really indulgent self-insert fic, or a combination of the two.
1. If the fic isn't a self-insert fic (where the reader is directly _in_ the story as a character), then using first person means the reader directly takes on the role of a different character. For example, if it's a Voltron fic, you might directly take the role of Lance; where (for that fic) you _are_ Lance. You talk as Lance, you act as Lance, you think as Lance, you feel as Lance.
It's a writing method that's supposed to make the reader sympathetic to the character, (because it forces the reader through the events and emotions that the character would feel), but there are honestly better ways to do it. A lot of people prefer to keep a fic in third person (she, he, they, etc.) because you can still express what a character's thinking and feeling even from that outside perspective. (This is where the stereotype that only new/immature writers use first person comes from. They assume the author is using first person to compensate for the fact that they cannot make a reader empathize without literally plopping the reader into the character's shoes.) Plus, when writers use first person, it also gets dangerously close to self-insert territory.
2. There's nothing inherently wrong with reader-insert stories; it can be fun to plop yourself directly into another universe with characters you like and go on an adventure. However, this is a bit of a slippery slope. Keep in mind that self-insert fics are ultimately wish fulfillment, (typically for both the reader _and_ the writer,) and that can lead to some icky situations.
If the writer is indulging in their own fantasy, then that can sometimes lead to out-of-character (OOC) behavior or reducing characters to their stereotypes. So (going back to Voltron) a self-insert fic that is Lance/Reader might have Lance acting OOC or only portray him as a flirtatious f*ckboy in order to have him fit the fantasy situation that the writer is making. (And disclaimer: this happens with fics that are not self-insert as well, in fact it can literally happen _anywhere_ in fiction. But the act of writing with the main goal of being self-indulgent does increase the possibility of this happening.)
And for the reader (and also the writer to what is usually a lesser extent), self-insert fics can reenforce a sense of your parasocial relationship with these characters/people. Once again, this isn't a bad thing on its own: literally _every_ relationship you form on the internet is parasocial (despite the connotation around the word). But some people are susceptible to becoming so entangled in the illusion that they have a direct and meaningful relationship with the character or person that it starts to change their behavior. (This what people usually think of as 'parasocial.')
This is especially harmful in the fandoms surrounding content creators (singers, artists, writers; your favorite k-pop band, UA-camrs, Twitch streamers, vTubers, etc.) who happen to be real, living people. So if a fan starts to internalize these fantasies about their favorite content creator, they might end up doing and saying things that harm themselves, the community, and the content creators themselves. Again: this is _not_ always the natural progression of self-insert fics, just a risk. You just have to be aware that all of it is parasocial (that you do not actually know these people personally unless _both_ of you have agreed on it), and make sure to respect a content creator's boundaries (like in any relationship).
Anyways, with all of that having been said, not all first person fics are badly written; nor are first person fics inherently problematic. But people do tend to recoil when they realize it's in first person (especially if it wasn't explicitly tagged that the reader is one of the characters) for many of these reasons.
I hope that answered your question!

I once wrote a drabble series. Once you've limited yourself to exactly 100 words, it gets a lot easier to write four or five times that, and it'salot less pressure to focus on just one scene at a time. It's such an adrenaline rush to be saying "crud, I wrote too much!", and after that, it's easier to connect the drabbles together and flesh them out into a full-fledged story.
the worst feeling is finding your super old work, getting invested in your own writing only to get frustrated when you realise it you never finished it and left it in the middle of a chapter or something lmao

When you type your fanfics but then you have to delete a whole paragraph and you just watch the letters disappear like:
👁👄👁💧
and then when you have to delete whole chapters?? this is why i hate editing. the pain is real.
Ok, recommendation here: make a document and name it whatever. That's where you put your discarded sentences and paragraphs. If a certain piece of your writing doesn't sit well with the entirety of your story, but you just don't have the heart to delete it, copy and paste it in that document. That way, when you seem to have no idea how to write a certain scene or just need SOMETHING to hit you with inspiration, you can scroll through that document and perhaps reuse a discarded paragraph or two.

The biggest problem: not publishing one of your fanfictions because you are afraid that someone might insult you.
Someone's gonna insult you either way, might as well just publish.
That was me. Take a deep breath and publish it. You'll do just fine
If you honestly use your time to insult a fanfic your WAY more embarrassing than the author. Don’t worry

I totally get that. If you upload your fics on Ao3, you have the option to orphan your work so it won't be associated with your account/ online persona. I think this helps somewhat in easing the anxiety of the (imaginary) barrage of insults, criticism and judgement.

The area of “the beginning is good, the end is good, what the f*** is this middle though” describes my struggles as a writer, I can come up with a beginning and an end, how do I get there though-
“You could write the next fifty shades of grey!”
“That is literally the shittiest thing you can say to a writer. Please do not compare my trash to that raging dumpster fire please”
That’s why I tell people if they want to compliment a fanfic writer with potential, say that they could write the next Godzilla vs Biollante. People love that movie
Why exactly do people hate Fifty Shades Of Grey exactly though?
Like is the writing or the characters bad or do people just go "EW BDSM SMUTT" and that's only reason why?
I genuinely don't know why, I don't really know much about what it's about other than that it's kinky.
I am Bluepelt from what I heard, the characters are bland and the pacing isn’t good. The sex parts feel force and not genuine or earned.
The biggest reason why people hate fifty shades of gray is because it’s the first openly admitted fanfiction exposed to the mainstream. Meaning because of that movie, most people now associate FanFiction with raunchy and forced sex and romance with no variety.
@@dragonthunderx3250 Thank you for answering my question!
@@iambluepelt3904 also, toxic and abusive relationships are all that gets shown in that trash fire, but the author still insists it's a perfectly healthy and normal love story. Also, bad rep for the BDSM Community and the sex scenes are just shit.

When I start writing a new fanfic and it has a really good idea and I have a really good story for the AU and then you write way too much *and lose motivation and then you never work on it again because of it.* Then also you compare your writing to someone else and then realize your fanfic is literally just a bunch of words mushed together and it is probably incredibly boring to read. After that you lose a ton of inspiration and stop writing for 2 weeks and then come back to see your comment is full with people spamming you to update or you just realize you spent hours writing it and it got no reads at all. Can relate to all of these, nice, especially when your friends find out you write fanfiction and then think you write a ton of smut which is the exact opposite of what I do. Pain.

The thing that bugs the most as a fanfic writer is when I have the perfect story... plot and dialogue all imagined in my head to the last detail... then I start writing it, and it feels like I'm writing crap for my 1st draft.. smh
Same. I’m also the type who has many ideas in my head, but they never see the light of day since most of these ideas are random prompts, and outlines scattered across multiple notebooks
the version that exists is always going to be better than the version in your head, because it exists. ive lost so many amazing stories to the blackhole of my memory where no one will ever read them. it takes work (revisions, drafts, editing) to truly realize your vision, but it's worth it in the end to make your story tangible and real, able to be shared with other people

I don't got that problem if my fanfic follows a more linear structure. (Basically having the main characters go from point A to B with some stuff going on in the meantime, but if it's more open for like- when the characters get to certain locations or meet certain people, I struggle HARD with that, probably why I struggled with actually writing the rough draft for Chapter 1 of Epoch Engage in comparison to the rough draft for Chapter 1 of Boundary Breakage, which I actually finished the latter, so I'm just waiting for my Beta Reader to get back to me with feedback)

When I'm creating a fan fic, it is 10% of me writing it, 90% of me procrastinating, and 100% of me not finishing the fic.
As a fanfiction writer myself, I had gone through my own self homemade hell-hole, and pass through many stages of grief a couple of times, and it hits harder than before.

when you're writing a fanfic and you're not sure if one of your characters is a mary sue or not
YESSS I have that genuine fear as well 😂
AGHHH SAME- I try to give them relatable flaws and stuff, but I'm scared that they might be mary-sue-ish 😔
Me too!
I feel that! Also I'd like to think I'm pretty creative, but when it comes to invisioning and creating a character, I just cant. Personality is doable, but I cant imagine a nice proportionate body to save my life! Like I want them really tall and buff but since I know nothing about anatomy, they'll look so weirdly proportioned. Also, 9/10 times they will all look similar to a previous oc or a very popular character in a show/game that I just recently got into whether it be appearance or personality wise. Yeah and I dare call myself creative.
what’s a mary sue i literally have no more brain cells to figure it out
