I would highly suggest checking out AO3. I find it really interesting how much the writing quality differs between the two platforms. I have read at least 100 fics on AO3 so far and only come across 3 I didn't want to finish.

all jokes aside, duplicity is actually a really great fanfic. not because it's mafia harry styles enemies to lovers smut or shit, but because it's so amazingly written, has very complex characters, shocking plot twists and touches on topics like mental health and trauma. when i first read it, it quite literally changed my life. i'm not even kidding lmao. i still think about almost daily

I used to read wattpad books when I was younger and the thing that was such a shock to me was when I started seeing wattpad published books IN PERSON AT BOOKSTORES. Like dang pop off.
there used to be (maybe still is?) a few real YA authors that published early versions of their books on wattpad to get feedback and interact more with the readers. I think Scott Westerfield did that with the Uglies series.
As a wattpad reader and writer, I'm here to say that comment section of wattpad is far worst than any fanfiction you have read here (1d has the best fanfiction! Some are just wonderfully written!)
i think after wattpad had premium and everything, people went to ao3 (archive of our own) and it has a lot of better fanfiction and you can filter stuff pretty well

Most of the Wattpad fanfics are painful to read, causing all the bad reputation. But there are actual gems that gets covered up by the bad rep. AO3 is the best when it comes to fanfiction.
i have read wattpad for nearly 2 years and i feel like the plot lines are very similiar now . I have seen some amazing stories on there while also finding some traumatising or plot less as expected . Overall i think wattpad is great for upcoming authors to gather support on a platform

Wattpad was my life for so long. I didn’t consciously search for and read fan fiction but I did come across a few. There are a couple of stories that I remember loving, and I did find some incredible writing on there. It’s a shame that it’s got ‘premium’ now, it doesn’t feel the same

I still read and support the authors but I can't afford to pay for chapters when it's easier to just buy the published book. Everyone knows that Jack adores Harry Styles, so I kind of had to write this. Honestly, you think this is bad? The One Direction fanfictions will scar you for life. I don't read fanfiction at all, except for a some Harry Potter ones every few months, so I have no idea how this thing works. However, I've heard that the One Direction fanfictions on Wattpad are brutal. There's one in particular, called 'After' by Anna Todd, which is basically a teen version of 50 shades of grey. It's a below-average book (at best) featuring a toxic love story of bad boy Harry/Hardin and this holier-than-thou protagonist called Tessa. It's basically trash, but it got a billion reads on Wattpad (Just for reference, but reads work differently on Wattpad. Each chapter you read is counted as one read), got published by freaking SIMON AND SCHUSTER, and got made into a movie series starring Hero Fiennes-Tiffin (aka Baby Voldemort from HBP) and Josephine Langford (Katherine Langford's sister). I picked up this book because I liked the cover. I didn't know it was THAT kind of a story; but one thing I know, is that I'll never be the same again. I don't want to mentally cripple Jack or something, but I kind of wish he'd read After..
I got past like three chapters of After and gave up. How does it have so many reads?? It’s literally trash and the writing is incredibly bad. It kind of bugs me because I’ve read some really good, non weird/creepy/badly written stories on Wattpad, but even though they’re really good, they don’t get NEARLY as much attention as the fics and other stuff. Idk why I’m ranting about this lol. I just wish the whole site wasn’t so focused on mature content and instead on actual story based stuff

I've been through the same thing, and i had this Harry Styles fanfic i wrote in 2015, and it was juicy lol, and.... the main character had my FULL NAME ( like who does that?? ) and the profile picture had...my picture :) And it wasn't a normal picture, it was my picture photoshoped with Harry hugging me from behind ಠ_ಠ ... Anyway, one day, i got logged out, and i forgot the password, and my email got deleted somehow and i couldn't recover it.... so, since 2015, growing up, i watch this account and observe the comment on the story...and then i would cringe SO HARD!!!
A few months ago i got REALLY angry and had enough, so i contacted wattpad through email and told them the whole story and begged them to delete the account or do anything... And they were helpful, i didn't even expect they would reply! So the person contacted me asked me a few question to make sure it was my account, like " What's in your drafts, what's the name of the story, name 6 stories from your private library, what was your email? " .... It was so hard to remember what i had in my library at 12 years old lol, but i did it, and they finally told me CONGRATS now you can add another email and a new password and use that old account! I did it!!!! I was able to open it again, AND I DELETED THIS CURSE !!!!!!!! and the picture lol
The Josh Hutcherson story has the greatest plot twist ever written. Spoiler: The author writes a second self insert to steal Josh away from the first self insert… who is herself. She got jealous of her self insert and stole Josh away from herself. It’s completely insane.
Jenny Nicholson has done some great videos about fanfic, including the Josh Hutcherson one. I highly recommend if you want to hear this stuff roasted in detail.
But ngl many of the best books that I have read in my life are from wattpad or ao3 and are basically fanfictions. If you dig deep enough, you are sure to find some amazing books with talented writers!!

I used to read wattpad books when I was younger and the thing that was such a shock to me was when I started seeing wattpad published books IN PERSON AT BOOKSTORES. Like dang pop off.
there used to be (maybe still is?) a few real YA authors that published early versions of their books on wattpad to get feedback and interact more with the readers. I think Scott Westerfield did that with the Uglies series.

i think after wattpad had premium and everything, people went to ao3 (archive of our own) and it has a lot of better fanfiction and you can filter stuff pretty well
Yeah ao3 has so many greater fics but unfortunately wattpad has more users that don't even know what ao3 is 😅

Most of the Wattpad fanfics are painful to read, causing all the bad reputation. But there are actual gems that gets covered up by the bad rep. AO3 is the best when it comes to fanfiction.

i have read wattpad for nearly 2 years and i feel like the plot lines are very similiar now . I have seen some amazing stories on there while also finding some traumatising or plot less as expected . Overall i think wattpad is great for upcoming authors to gather support on a platform

Wattpad was my life for so long. I didn’t consciously search for and read fan fiction but I did come across a few. There are a couple of stories that I remember loving, and I did find some incredible writing on there. It’s a shame that it’s got ‘premium’ now, it doesn’t feel the same

I know right! I was an almost daily reader on Wattpad. Would binge hundreds of books for around half a decade. But the moment it became more about the money than the books, I dropped out. I still read and support the authors but I can't afford to pay for chapters when it's easier to just buy the published book.
It's a shame that so many wonderful fanfictions I used to read are taken down now by the authors though :(

Everyone knows that Jack adores Harry Styles, so I kind of had to write this. Honestly, you think this is bad? The One Direction fanfictions will scar you for life. I don't read fanfiction at all, except for a some Harry Potter ones every few months, so I have no idea how this thing works. However, I've heard that the One Direction fanfictions on Wattpad are brutal. There's one in particular, called 'After' by Anna Todd, which is basically a teen version of 50 shades of grey. It's a below-average book (at best) featuring a toxic love story of bad boy Harry/Hardin and this holier-than-thou protagonist called Tessa. It's basically trash, but it got a billion reads on Wattpad (Just for reference, but reads work differently on Wattpad. Each chapter you read is counted as one read), got published by freaking SIMON AND SCHUSTER, and got made into a movie series starring Hero Fiennes-Tiffin (aka Baby Voldemort from HBP) and Josephine Langford (Katherine Langford's sister). I picked up this book because I liked the cover. I didn't know it was THAT kind of a story; but one thing I know, is that I'll never be the same again. I don't want to mentally cripple Jack or something, but I kind of wish he'd read After..
I got past like three chapters of After and gave up. How does it have so many reads?? It’s literally trash and the writing is incredibly bad. It kind of bugs me because I’ve read some really good, non weird/creepy/badly written stories on Wattpad, but even though they’re really good, they don’t get NEARLY as much attention as the fics and other stuff. Idk why I’m ranting about this lol. I just wish the whole site wasn’t so focused on mature content and instead on actual story based stuff

I've been through the same thing, and i had this Harry Styles fanfic i wrote in 2015, and it was juicy lol, and.... the main character had my FULL NAME ( like who does that?? ) and the profile picture had...my picture :) And it wasn't a normal picture, it was my picture photoshoped with Harry hugging me from behind ಠ_ಠ ... Anyway, one day, i got logged out, and i forgot the password, and my email got deleted somehow and i couldn't recover it.... so, since 2015, growing up, i watch this account and observe the comment on the story...and then i would cringe SO HARD!!!
A few months ago i got REALLY angry and had enough, so i contacted wattpad through email and told them the whole story and begged them to delete the account or do anything... And they were helpful, i didn't even expect they would reply!
So the person contacted me asked me a few question to make sure it was my account, like " What's in your drafts, what's the name of the story, name 6 stories from your private library, what was your email? " .... It was so hard to remember what i had in my library at 12 years old lol, but i did it, and they finally told me CONGRATS now you can add another email and a new password and use that old account! I did it!!!! I was able to open it again, AND I DELETED THIS CURSE !!!!!!!!
