Do the story where a guy died from drinking too much carrot juice.
Based on the comments, an incredible amount of people missed what actually happened here. She had a tumor in her pancreas that caused a chronically elevated level of insulin, which was constantly pushing her blood sugar below the normal range. Going keto forced her body to rely entirely on the glucose it produces itself, which your body is normally able to do without problems, especially after it has adapted to using ketones for fuel for most things. Due to the chronic hyperinsulinemia, her body was not able to function normally. Going keto actually revealed an underlying medical condition that otherwise might have gone unnoticed for months or years. I guess there is also a warning here: Sometimes it's not just keto flu, but actual hypoglycemia.
Exactly.
If there's anything this situation tells about normal physiology is that high insulin wrecks your ketone production, regardless of whether you're on the keto diet or fasting or whatever.
No wonder we shouldn't be eating sugary carbs with fats in the same meal.

Yea but then we get to the end and find out the real reason she's having a problem isn't the keto diet but the cancer she has that prevents her from going into ketosis. Her cancer produces 3 times the normal amount of insulin when there is insulin in the blood the liver won't perform gluconeogenesis she didn't just have no sugar in her blood she also had no keytone bodies.

My husband had this same issue for 7 years doctors in wyoming shrugged it off . finally a move to Idaho and repeated seizures doctors finally figured out it was a non cancerous tumor on his pancreas. When they did the surgery the surgeon said everytime they would press on the tumor it would realse high levels of insulin.
Seven years, and you did nothing? Not buying the claim "doctors did nothing". Not even slightly.
@@pm2886 mom had a similar thing. Sometimes Docs have blind suggestions but not enough clarity to the person to explain what is wrong and how to fix it. For symptoms, Docs offered removing ovaries but not a reason why it was necessary to undergo a major surgery. Then, many years later, new doc gave her a scan and could point it out. Doc said they would not remove her ovaries if they can be saved. The growth was "softball size" and as the doctor moved her ovaries out of the way to get to it they "just fell apart".
@@mf-- Still not buying it. Doctors are responsible people, and communicate any important information. Unfortunately patients don't always listen - especially if they don't like what they're hearing. Other patients just avoid medical treatment altogether, then blame some doctor in the deep past for not magically guessing everything that might happen in the future.

That's because it's common for doctors to disbelieve female patients. Wait, if "JC" was trying to "feed her daughter naturally," doesn't that mean breastmilk? I gained about 50 pounds while pregnant; while breast feeding, I was eating normally, but the pounds were just melting off due to the calories going into the breast milk. After 6 months of breastfeeding, all but about 10 pounds of the extra weight were gone; I lost the last 10 pounds over the next 6 months. If you're trying to breastfeed, it's NOT the time for a reducing diet, since your baby NEEDS those calories in the milk!
Nothing reducing on keto, she was sick from the beginning ! Also, running 1h a day didn't help, depleting glucose stores faster. Why would any breastfeeding mother stress her body so much ?
Keto doesn't reduce calories. Even if you're eating OMAD on keto, (one meal a day) you get enough calories, because of the amount of fat in the diet.
Yeah being on a highly restrictive diet while breast feeding a newborn is epic self sabotage

I used to ride my bike up to 50 miles a day before i broke my knee. During the time i was non weight bearing I did not change my eating habits as a result my weight doubled.. I reached a point where i was always hungry even if i just ate. So I got a surgery called a gastric sleeve where most of the stomach is removed.
Immediately following that surgery I went from eating all the time to barely eating at all. It was a HUGE adjustment period for my body. The thing is I am also ADHD and the first really bad hypoglycemic episode I had I was only alerted to because of my cat. She bit me until she yanked me out of my hyperfocus, yelled at me and then led me to the kitchen and yelled at me again.
She alerted me several more times after that as my body adjusted to getting healthier portions of food less often. After a few months I quit having these attacks and I am still doing well.
My cat still takes very good care of me.
Animals can smell high blood glucose. In Sweden we have therapy dogs that can smell high blood glucose, and alert the owner with diabetes. 🇸🇪
And low glucose. The dog can alert the owner about that also, if I remember correctly.
My nephew has type 1diabetes,as does his sister. A few months ago, they got his diabetic alert dog, trained exclusively for his scent...his older sister also has the same diabetes..this smart dog ALSO alerts to high and low blood sugars on his sister,too!!...animals are smart, have scents that are beyond our imaginations..it's so cool that the cat, untrained, knows and alerts, without training..sometimes we just need to give our fur babies more credit! They are awesomely designed!!!

What's a safe way to cut carbs that you learned plz to cut weight?
I think what people should do when they try keto is to taper carbs so their body has time to adjust. If your diet jumps from 60% carbs to 5% overnight your whole system is going to freak out, tumor or not. Energy is essential for your body. It can either burn carbohydrates or fatty acids for energy. If it's been using one primarily for many years, it's not going to like rapid switching to the other.
to be fair, keto is really low carb, not no carb... but yeah, a breastfeeding woman should not be on keto.
After reading some comments , you're a breath of fresh air
Even keto shouldnt be a problem. Having this type of pancreatic cancer is a problem on keto though..
Yeah, when I was on keto I had some carbs but not much. Definitely not a good idea for breastfeeding women imo, the diet is more for people who are able to be ok with it (which is most people).

My friend did the keto diet with her mum. She was 16 and 100 pounds overweight. Unfortunately her body reacted in a way that ruined her kidneys. She already has had her first transplant from her mum and it failed. This covid thing is so scary for her too. She is only 21 now and is suffering everyday. It's always best to have a doctor involved in any major dietary changes.
Why did her body react that way?
she didnt do it properly.
My stepdaughter's mom tried to get her to do a keto diet with her when kiddo was just 15/16. I had a bad feeling about it so I researched and it can cause either diabetes or hypoglycemia in teens, depending on how the body reacts, because of the hormone fluctuations and frequent imbalances as puberty hits hard and fast. I printed out the warnings from sites like the Mayo Clinic and other hospitals, told kiddo to refuse the diet in lieu of just eating healthier, starting active, and limiting quantity of problem foods - a SAFE diet. I sent the articles home with her and asked her father to explain to her mother how dangerous keto can be for a teenager and that we were vehemently against it. Fortunately, the mother realized the dangers and stopped forcing the unhealthy diet onto my girl.

@@mrnobody7638 She *did it properly* and got quite badly hurt because of underlying medical issues. I think the message here isn't "keto is bad" nor is it "keto is good."
It's more "keto is *not* for _everyone._ " If you have underlying medical issues or a medical history (familial or personal) involving problems dealing with ketones, this is NOT the diet for you (it's actually very dangerous for those types of people). BUT that's not everyone, much like "gluten free" is beneficial for celiac, keto can be exceptional beneficial for other medical problems (the one that primarily comes to mind is type 2 diabetes). CONTEXT IS KEY! Just like any diet, it needs proper context of _your_ medical history to determine whether or not it's appropriate and most importantly safe.
What was the original title?
@@KyleCorbeau Her "underlying medical issue" was unrelated to keto.
In fact there could be an argument that her slightly higher ketone levels kept her brain alive when her blood sugar crashed. However, that's neither here nor there to the video and is just my speculation.
The point is, why is the keto diet even referenced? It was not the causes or a symptom. The video was about the dangers of very low blood sugar. People on Keto have regular and healthy blood sugar thanks to glyconeogenesis. This was mentioned in the video.
My answer is that it is fearmongering click bait.

As someone who has had pancreatic issues (I've had reactive hypoglycemia since age 15), including pancreatitis, I am constantly conscious of my glucose levels. And as a recovering alcoholic, I know not to insult my pancreas any further. I've been told it's been insulted enough it could convert to Type 2 diabetes. The pancreas is an incredibly important organ that can get overlooked by many people who should be aware how essential proper blood glucose levels are..

I remember reading about something like this in a medical magazine, an outbreak of seizures among children in a certain part of India. The children would be found seizing with their arms up in the air, often early in the morning, similar to the symptoms suffered by JC. Turns out that lychee fruits, which are grown in that area and ripen that time of year, contain toxins that lower blood glucose levels. Usually the amounts are too small to cause a problem, but children who ate a lot of lychee fruits on an empty stomach and then skipped their evening meal became hypoglycemic overnight because they already had so little glucose in their system.
My GCSE biology exam was about this!
Why does hypoglycemia make us want to raise our arms? Google isn't telling me

I remember when I tried to go vegan for the 3rd time in my life. I was subsisting on fruits, veg, beans and carbs- just no meat, eggs, cheese, or animal product. As had happened before, a couple weeks in and I got very sick. Immune system was weak. I was catching everything and at one point had a summer cold that lasted a few months. When I resumed including meats and eggs back into my diet, I instantly felt stronger, had more stamina, sickness went away. I’ve learned to listen to my body. I don’t struggle with weight gain and I’m a lot stronger than I look. I don’t eat meat everyday but I eat it once or twice a week and that’s all I need to keep myself healthy. We’re all so different and just because a diet works for one person, doesn’t mean it can work for everyone.
You must be using plant proteins to supplement period that will catch up with you eventually. It's like building a house with inferior bricks. It looks really nice when you build it at first and everything works well but then things start falling apart because you're an animal and plant protein doesn't transfer into protein that your body can use at a very good ratio at all. I believe meet compared to vegetable protein is 10 to 1. So eating enough protein isn't the same thing as absorbing enough protein and certainly not the right kinds of protein.
@@decolonizeEverywhereno, plant proteins can never replace animal proteins. Humans evolved to eat primarily meat, and we supplemented our diet with fruits and vegetables when they came into season. There’s a reason why eating pounds of meat will make you pass a massive solid turd, and eating pounds of fruit will make you sick to your stomach.
Stop talking about things you dont onow anything about. Proteins get reduced to amino acids, there are 22 of them but only 9 are essential, with a few extra partly essential which can be made from the others but are often sufficient from diet to not need to be. Looking into DIAAS scores for proteins will show the digestible amino acid score, how much we can get from it alone for the optimal ratio of amino acids. Looking at the numbers for adults, even things like lentils and beans are well up into the 85+ % range as being as useful as whey protein from milk, the kind used in almost every supplement. Even wheat or milk or rice protein is about 50%. Milk gets as high as 118%. There's nothing special about the amino acids. You just might need 80g instead of the 50g rdi, if eating low quality proteins, although protein deficiency is quite rare in this part of the world. Prisoners end up getting themselves well muscled despite a fairly lacking protein intake.
If anything, it's simply digestive tract issues or micro nutrients like B12 which older folks get deficient in whether they eat meat or not thanks to lowering stomach acid PH. Get your B vitamins by eating a healthy range of foods, get enough proteins to be able to gain strength and rebuild, and don't give yourself an eating disorder. Eat enough, exercise, make it mostly wholesome food.@@decolonizeEverywhere
