+sandyreadsalot I recently discovered audiobooks too and they are amazing! I love my ability to multitask (ie dishes, fold laundry, etc) while "reading!"
yeah teachers force kids to read boring classics and then wonder why none of them like to read. if schools made kids read harry potter/ the hunger games im pretty sure the reading rate of kids would be much higher
I don't know. I enjoyed reading some books in school like Frankenstein, The Great Gatsby, Brave New World, The Little Prince, and a few more. I think it partly had to do with the fact that we did cool activities while or after reading them. But also my schools were really good about giving students time during English classes (and sometimes other classes) to read whatever they wanted, often. It's important to study classics but teachers need to make them more approachable for pre-teens and teens. But giving students time where they can read for fun is important too even in high school.
I know right!! And not just classics. They also make us read so much non fiction. My English teacher just recently assigned some books to my class and I was expecting stuff that are on my reading list and I found just boring stuff about the school system and Ebola and those things
We read Holes and that really changed most of my forms view on reading! And we had to read the Hunger Games. I'm pretty sure my form would hate reading if we had to read classics
these are some great tips! glad to say i enforce MOST of them caUSE THREE BOOKS IS A LOT KAT HOW DO YOU REMEMBER ANYTHING i really like the different format idea and i'm positive it would work, but since i can only read one book at once, i'm not exactly financially stable enough to buy my books in hardcover, ebook and audio book (though i have 4 different copies of city of bones so what am i saying) love this video!
I love how at the end, you said whatever amount you read is the right amount for you, there is no *should*. This helps so much, thank you a lot! I have the weakest will power known to man kind, and UA-cam and Netflix are the biggest village to coerce me to the dark side. The dark side always have tempting things that late become ultimately bad for achieving your goals or staying on track. It's horrible!
your willpower is weak right now for you, but you can increase it in your humanity path by taking one bigger toe in the tip of the water each day in your own phase :). 365 days and one inch increase each day does allot in the end :)! happy reading
I had a big Netflix marathon and I was watching "The 100" none stop. Since i finished the first season it put me in the mood for science fiction and I'm already halfway throughout my book! ^_^
Leah Roper-Smith Omg yes! I thought he was a jerk at first but im sloooowing falling for him lol i'm reading "This Shattered World" which is the sequel to "These Broken Stars" :)
I just started doing the multiple book thing too! It's awesome! Especially if the books are really long. Also, I think all these tips can be applied to writing too! Yeah... I need to do more of that XD And hey, you know what book I'm really excited about reading? The Wise Man's Fear ;-)
I couldn't agree more with your tips. My TV watching is replaced by book reading. I try to read on my lunch break and an hour before bed. I always carry a book with me too. These things alone helped me get through more books. It's not a contest, but I there are way too many good books out there! I simply must get to them.
If it wasn't for Booktube videos I wouldn't be reading as much as I do. All the great recommendations out there. I do love audiobooks too. I read on the nights that I don't have TV shows on and I will read during commercial breaks. I finish about 3 books a week.
The thing is ,since I started watching your videos I have been reading so much more ! Not only because your excitement brought back my motivation to read but also because i was reading books you made book talks about, which led to me wanting to read that book faster in order to be able to watch the particular book talk! ( best example: red rising and mistborn )
Since I've just started my full time new job my reading time has gone down quite a bit (right when I want to get through the beast that is Queen of Shadows!) but I manage to read for at least 30 minutes each night before bed but I also get to read on my bus to and from work as I can choose to either get on the longer route or shorter route to and from work, so I always choose the longer route and I get quite a bit of reading done then. I then also have an audiobook going whilst getting showered and ready in the mornings (but its just constantly Harry Potter) and I'm now gonna start setting down a block of hours on a Sunday to read more!
+Rachel Hesketh I need to be that disciplined! With my studies it is so hard to find the time to read. Therefore during my holidays I read twice as much XD
I agree on the multiple formats thing. I have my current book both as a physical book (which I read at home in the evenings) and as an ebook (which I read during short breaks at uni, on the tram, etc.). I also have an audiobook going that I like to listen to while knitting. I might make slower progress splitting my time up between multiple books, but that way I can always decide what I'm most in the mood for and also use small breaks for reading.
Such great advice, Kat. Ever since I finished college, I always have a good intention to read and often get distracted by Netflix or UA-cam, my phone, etc. It does not help that my TBR is almost 50 books long (I cut it down) and makes me anxious. Yet when I read more, I often find my writing improves - and I want to write more too! So many books, so little time! But I need to make the time. Even just a little bit... Thank you so much.
I've been slacking on my reading lately. There are just so many other things to do. This video is totally what I needed to get motivated to read again and really make it a priority.
Thanks you so much Kat! I really needed this video because I've been in a terrible reading slump for the past month! When I saw this video I got really excited and now I'm out of my reading slump! THANK YOU!
Awesome tips! I definitely agree with reading multiple books on different formats. It really helps me read more books. Plus I get options to choose something that fits my mood.
The thing about getting yourself a goal of 30 minutes / 1 hour of reading it's so true, especially for procrastinators. I love reading, but when you are a procrastinator, you even push away things that you love to do. But with a list, it becomes a challenge and you do it. I read so much more this year with that method. And reading multiple books in different formats is also good. I haven't use the audio book option yet, but I'm always reading a book in my phone along a physical book. And when I'm frustrated with a book, I can switch to the other and keep the interest in reading.
I see you and the way you talk about books and reading and I see your bookshelf behind you...It motivates me a lot! I'm gonna read right now!Thank you Kat you're amazing! Kisses from Peru!
I read on the bus to and from school, before bed, and during lunch at school. Also I can't bring myself to read multiple books at once, cause I don't wanna mish mash all the stories together in my brain.
Thank you Kat, for your tips on ways to find ourselves reading books more. Heck, for me I like to keep my mind fresh, so my best ways to keep reading are, to read in short bursts, or finish a book from start to finish in 1 day. And also, because of my autism, I like to read in areas with good conditions to line up with my pattern of thinking.
This was so inspiring, especially the ending. I've been taking pressure about reading and it's like the stupidest thing you can do... So thank you for this video and your channel, you're awesome!
I agreed with a lot of what you mentioned in this video. Thank you for your tips! I've recently contemplated listening to an audiobook. It just seems like it'd be a good thing to do. (Especially if you're traveling, and you brought your headphones or something). Whenever I'm not reading, I'm always thinking about reading. And I do agree about reading a book you feel excited to read. I'll admit, I pushed myself into a reading slump at least once. It wasn't fun.
Audiobooks are great for walking around campus! Instead of listening to music while I walk to class or workout, I listen to my audiobook. It's been great and super helpful!
These are awesome tips! Most of them I've already heard from my best friend, who puts these same tips into practice every day. :) I'm sad about the fact that I used to read CONSTANTLY when I was a little girl and on through my teenage years. I want to reconnect with my inner bookworm sooo much! But I've let life get in my way. :( Which leads me to the only part of the video that I sorta-kinda-half-disagree with: the statement that there's no "should" when it comes to reading. While I do agree that you shouldn't beat yourself up over the fact that you're not reading enough, I'm also a writer, and writers NEED to read. It's essential. My writing has suffered a lot from my lack of reading. Life is getting in the way of that, too. It's something I desperately want to change. So, thanks for the renewed inspiration! I'm saving this video for future reference! :)
I recently swapped from reading loads of books at once to one physical and some audio and it's actually really helped me read faster as I only have one book to focus on and worry about.
Great advice on making sure you read what you are interested in, instead of what you think you should be interested in. I have read a few books on subjects I like (writing, programming and game design), but I didn't find myself as interested as I was with previous books I read on the same subjects. I kept having this nagging feeling that "You SHOULD like this book. Read it!" But if that was true, I wouldn't let days go by without ever picking it up. Make sure you want to read your books whatever they maybe, don't feel you have to read them. Learning comes far better when you enjoy it, and not at all when you're bored.
Thankyou so much katy for sharing this video. I am about to start college and I was worried about how I was gonna read more. Now I definitely know how I am gonna manage. I've joined the booktube community 3 weeks agao and now I have to read regularly in order to make videos. I think your tips are really gonna help me reading more. Thankyou so much once again ....
This semester I literally have time for nothing (only for your vids, darling) and I'm reading on the bus, at a 10 minutes break or when I'm walking on the streets. It's amazing how many pages you read in one day just by doing that! :D
Watching book tube videos has really increased my reading! I'm not at the place where i can read more than one book, lol. I tried and I was over it. Good tips.
I've only just started listening to audio books and its sped up my reading so much!! I'm currently listening to Can You Keep A Secret by Sophie Kinsella, reading The Summer I Turned Pretty on my phone as well as Never Always Sometimes and Why We Broke Up in hard copy. Reading multiple books at a time, I've found that I'm reading so much more, great tip!!
I used to never read more than one book at a time until recently. I now use it as a tool. I have a main priority book that is usually complex and than I have a side book that is more simple in plot, but still enjoyable. Whenever I feel my main reading material is dragging Ill finish the chapter, and pick up the side material. Eventually my mind will want to get back to the complex storyline and ill be excited to return to the slow build of an epic tale.
Having the will power is so huge. Also, I love reading multiple books so I can have a few different genres all going at one. It keeps everything fresh :)
What a coincidence I was just about to continue reading this book I started but then my phone told me that you had a New video up so thanks for inspiring me Kat
My school does this thing called DEAR everyday. In a random lesson the teacher will say DEAR and you just have to Drop Everything And Read for 20 minutes. I love it because it forces me to always have a book on me and I can get more reading done. At home I read more as well. I just love books. ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Kat :) I agree with you, audiobooks are a great thing, and reading multiple books is a good idea too. But I usually read multiple books if I'm not feeling a book at one moment and I decide to put it down for a while. Or also of course when I read a book for a seminar and another for pure plaesure :) I love audiobooks as well, but usually I'll have the audiobook match a book I'm currently reading and I'll listen to it walking to classes, on the shorter bus rides and during lunch break etc when reading would be harder to do. Having a kindle helps too, because you can have multiple books with you without adding any weight^^
About 3 minutes into this video I paused it because I was like "RIGHT, THAT'S IT. I'M FINALLY GONNA READ UNWHOLLY" (second book in the Unwind "dystology", I've been putting it off for ages, IDEK why). I went and fished it out of my bookshelves, got myself a reading zone all set up, and then had a moment of "oh year, right, finish the video first" and I did and YES. Booktube is such a good motivator for actually reading. THANK YOU. x)
Audio books are the best! I have a semi long commute to work so I almost always have an audio book to listen to in the car. I also have started reading from my phone too so that way I don't have to carry a book with me to work and I can pull it out on break easily.
Netflix is seriously the killer of all book reading motivation! But I've never thought to try different formats of books! I'll definitely be picking up some audiobooks in the near future!
Thanks so much for the tips! Yep, my tv viewing has totally dwindled, since I've gotten serious about my reading, which I'm happy about! Just started to attempt to read multiple books, it's working so far (as long as they are TOTALLY different, fiction vs self help, etc.). I really need to get on the audiobook train, I'm sure that would help a lot!
i got so focused on seeing how many books i could read in 1 month that i quit reading for fun. it was more of a chore. the last time i read was in February because i couldn't do it anymore. i finally picked up a book last week and am reading everyday again :) so much happier now.
Great tips, especially what you said at the end. Reading should never feel like a chore and it definitely does sometimes for me. Also, your makeup & hair look great! :)
Also artists: listen to books while you draw. Especially drawings that take hours. I draw comic books so it's easy for me to listen to a book while I draw, there's not a lot to think about as I have the layout right in front of me. So yeah, listen while you draw!
Great tips! I started listening to audiobooks on my commute to school and work, and it makes those trips so much better! I look forward to driving sometimes. I am able to finish more books this way. ~Sylvia
thx this really helped me cuz I used to read alot but school came and homework and projects all that stuff and since i watched this video i have read 4 books in a week!!
Thank you so much Kat! I just started high school so its been hard to read or be motivated to read after a long day. I do some of these but your video overall is a reminder to me and since you do this I will countinue to do what I do and really what you said too in the video. So thank you so much! PS: You are one of my favorite booktubers and one of them that inspired me to start booktube so it would be amazing if you saw this comment!! Thanks again. xD
I love your altro! It sounds super cool :) Thanks for your tips, Kat, I agree with the one about watching book tube. As a matter of fact, I want to get back to my book right this minute! Reading Hollow City so I can be ready for Library of Souls! YAY
I'm always in the "I really want to read" frame of mind, until I get distracted ... which happens frequently. These are great ideas that I'll have to try and incorporate, especially reading more than one book at a time but different formats.
Hahaha I bring a book with me EVERYWHERE I go and read my book if I'm waiting for my sister to finish talking to her friends, or if I'm at uni and I'm by myself (which is more often than not) or waiting for the bus! I can't read on the bus though; other people get motion sickness, whereas my eyes get really, really dry and tired. I only read on the bus if I know there's an exciting plot coming up next!
I love having a book every where I sit in the house and the Kindle app on my Ipad and phone, so I can read when waiting around. Also, the challenges on Goodreads, but realistic challenges, like dieting, not 100 lbs maybe 5 lbs, so maybe not 100 books, maybe 10 books in a year. Thanks for the tips.
Good Advice. I always have an audiobook. I've also learned to rea what your interested. Don't owrry about how many books you've read. Enjoy it and love it.
I definitely do that multiple format thing. I love listening to middle grade books rather than physically reading them... idk why. I'm currently listening to A Series Of Unfortunate Events (IN LOVE!), and reading Son by Lowis Lowry on my Nook and reading a physical non-fiction book. :)
I know through out primary school we had to read every night then have our parents sign out diaries. So it became a habit. but when I went to highschool, it just stopped. So going into 4th year of highschool, I'm trying to get back into the habit. This video really helped with that! Thank you!
I like reading multiple books at once because if I get bored of one, I'll switch to another. And books are so different! Right now I'm reading Lord of the Rings, a book for Spanish, a how-to book, and I'm about to start a book for English. :D
Such good advice. I always carry my book I'm currently reading in my purse so that I can read it during any free time I have. I'll take that 2 minutes of reading, thank you very much! Heheh.
I like audibooks a lot because you can listen to it while doing the laundry or whatever has to be done but is not fun compared to reading and you can have both and everything is fine. Unfortunaty most audiobooks here in Germany do not include the complete book so listen to those audiobooks is not much fun, the only exception is when you have already read the book and you likes it so much that yoh can live with a shortened version of it.
I love to read multiple books, especially if they have different themes, like, one is a YA, another is a classic, and another is a fantasy... It makes me more excited to read depending on the mood I'm in
My reading tends to be a feast or famine pattern. I read 8 books during a recent month and then proceeded to read only one the next month. Since then I have started reading another book and at the current pace I should finish it sometime around the end of October. I know where the blame lies. Netflix keeps me going even when it asks if I want to continue. Well of course I do! I'll make an effort to get back to reading every day now that I have finished a seven season series.
BOOKTUBE PULLED ME OUT OF MY 5 YEAR READING SLUMP!!! I searched Christine Riccio and found more booktubers and now I have a long list of TBR and books to buy.
How to read more:
Step one: Give up your social life...
oh wait I don't have one
so true 😂
Same
You made my day. Now I know that I am not alone.
+Ash Kuhlmann Sir. You. Win. the Internet today.
👏👏👏👏
The Netflix one hit me so hard. I am in the middle of That 70's Show binge-a-thon right now.
+Kayla Farley That's my next binge show rewatch after I finish my current Psych binge rewatch XD
+Katytastic It's just SO GOOD
After I finished it I went back to Parks and Rec
+Kayla Farley But I feel like that is a very good use of time (no sarcasm included).
ANoteToSelf They are both great shows honestly
Audiobooks have become my best friend since I started college! I get through so much during my bus ride to and from school. :)
+sandyreadsalot Yessss! I regret not getting into audiobooks sooner! They've legitimately changed my reading life!
+Katytastic Kat have you heard of Rick Riordans new Roman Demigod series
+sandyreadsalot I recently discovered audiobooks too and they are amazing! I love my ability to multitask (ie dishes, fold laundry, etc) while "reading!"
+Cameron Smailes his new series includes norse mythology, not roman :-)
look at good reads i know about magnus chase go to his name and look at series

I procrastinate so much... I have SO much homework and a HUGE test tomorrow (seriously)
Ok I'm gonna go watch Netflix for 2 hours see ya!
I'm watching this while I'm procrastinating reading and filming a video XD
Josh I love your vids 😀
Lol same. (That sounded so weird to say that I was filming a video...)
Yep. Not a video but reading.
these are some great tips!
glad to say i enforce MOST of them
caUSE THREE BOOKS IS A LOT KAT HOW DO YOU REMEMBER ANYTHING
i really like the different format idea and i'm positive it would work, but since i can only read one book at once, i'm not exactly financially stable enough to buy my books in hardcover, ebook and audio book
(though i have 4 different copies of city of bones so what am i saying)
love this video!
I mean wouldn't it be the best if we could get free audiobooks and ebooks with every physical book we buy!?
I love how at the end, you said whatever amount you read is the right amount for you, there is no *should*. This helps so much, thank you a lot! I have the weakest will power known to man kind, and UA-cam and Netflix are the biggest village to coerce me to the dark side. The dark side always have tempting things that late become ultimately bad for achieving your goals or staying on track. It's horrible!

I had a big Netflix marathon and I was watching "The 100" none stop. Since i finished the first season it put me in the mood for science fiction and I'm already halfway throughout my book! ^_^
I've never watched that but I've heard it's good. Do you think I should start it?
+MadisonWillia YES The 100 is so good, p.s. Bellamy is not as jerky as he seems
+MadisonWillia OMG YES WATCH IT! Lol sorry it's just a really good show!
+rachel s ok so, Bellamy is BAE and also, what book? I'm looking to add to my already extensive tbr list :)
Leah Roper-Smith Omg yes! I thought he was a jerk at first but im sloooowing falling for him lol i'm reading "This Shattered World" which is the sequel to "These Broken Stars" :)

I love going to my library and getting audio books I can add to my phone. Since I am a crafter it makes it much easier to do while I am crafting
I was expecting a meme reference in this comment...
don't craft
craf-wait, no
+Bilbo Swaggins i was so tempted to say protip but I don't want to be one of those people 😂

These were great tips! and your makeup was on point!
Thank you! :)
Katytastic You just had a mini conversation with Zues' daughter *clap clap*

This was so inspiring, especially the ending. I've been taking pressure about reading and it's like the stupidest thing you can do... So thank you for this video and your channel, you're awesome!
omg I needed this video. school has been just so time consuming and fitting in time to read is difficult. Awesome advice!
As an author, some of these tips apply for my writing as well. Especially the prioritizing and also getting excited about the activity.

+saranghaebooks Same tbh
Good tips.
Thank you for making this video! I took your advice and now I read way more than I used to. I can't thank you enough!
Yes! Love this. It's such a common question for us heavy readers. You tackled this perfectly! ☺️
YES THIS HELPED ME SO MUCH! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
But it hasn't been 5 minutes and the video is 6
+Adrian Ybarra Well I watched the whole thing. Maybe it's the timezones.
+Pinky Shrirajh true sorry😀😔😂
+Adrian Ybarra It's okay! No worries! :)
Pinky Shrirajh yeah and then I end up staying until the end of the chapter😂
Definitely always have a book with you and definitely have a kindle app on your phone so even if you didn't bring a hard copy you can read SOMETHING!
OMG love your book shelves in the back! Also, great tips!
I'm 13 and I love reading I really want to get a bookshelf in my room and start collecting books but I don't have space :(
I have space and no money :(
I have no space and no money
toulouseee same
Avril xoxo I don't even have my own room
Thanks so much for the tips! Yep, my tv viewing has totally dwindled, since I've gotten serious about my reading, which I'm happy about! Just started to attempt to read multiple books, it's working so far (as long as they are TOTALLY different, fiction vs self help, etc.). I really need to get on the audiobook train, I'm sure that would help a lot!
i got so focused on seeing how many books i could read in 1 month that i quit reading for fun. it was more of a chore. the last time i read was in February because i couldn't do it anymore. i finally picked up a book last week and am reading everyday again :) so much happier now.
i always watch booktube videos to get motivated about reading. seeing people getting all excited about books makes me excited. :D
Great tips, especially what you said at the end. Reading should never feel like a chore and it definitely does sometimes for me. Also, your makeup & hair look great! :)
Another tip: BOOK A THONS they always get me in a mood to read and i read so much in a book a thon!
Also artists: listen to books while you draw. Especially drawings that take hours. I draw comic books so it's easy for me to listen to a book while I draw, there's not a lot to think about as I have the layout right in front of me. So yeah, listen while you draw!
This is the best video of how to read more I was reading while listening to the vid. 😃 It was the same to watch book videos and helps me read more
Watching Booktube does work to make me in the mood to read like you mentioned. Great vid!
"Instead of going on UA-cam, you open your book and you read" *averts eyes from laptop screen and looks to Jane Eyre with guilt*
You know what gets me excited to read? Watching Katytastic videos. Im curently reading Girl online & unravelme. :)
way to read more: stop watching booktube and actually read
oh wait
I cant
I recommend getting a Kindle.
Thanks again. xD
Watching booktube videos is the best thing for me to get motivated to get out of a book slump.
I just read 50 pages and now I am rewarding myself with these videos!!!!
This was super helpful! With school and all the work that comes with it, I'm struggling to find enough time to satisfy my reading needs.
I agree. It's so hard to prioritize! I literally struggle between UA-cam and Books!
I love your altro! It sounds super cool :)
Thanks for your tips, Kat, I agree with the one about watching book tube. As a matter of fact, I want to get back to my book right this minute! Reading Hollow City so I can be ready for Library of Souls! YAY
THANK YOU
I've Been in a reading slump lately, but this makes me exciting to get back to reading :))
I listen to audiobooks at work. It has changed my world.
I watched this video when it came out three years ago and it’s still on my mind
I definitely do that multiple format thing. I love listening to middle grade books rather than physically reading them... idk why. I'm currently listening to A Series Of Unfortunate Events (IN LOVE!), and reading Son by Lowis Lowry on my Nook and reading a physical non-fiction book. :)
This video is just what I needed! Thank you so much, Kat!!
TMI And TID makes me happy 😅😅
I know through out primary school we had to read every night then have our parents sign out diaries. So it became a habit. but when I went to highschool, it just stopped. So going into 4th year of highschool, I'm trying to get back into the habit. This video really helped with that! Thank you!
I always (not always haha) read for one - two hours before bed 📖
I like reading multiple books at once because if I get bored of one, I'll switch to another. And books are so different! Right now I'm reading Lord of the Rings, a book for Spanish, a how-to book, and I'm about to start a book for English. :D
Such good advice.
I always carry my book I'm currently reading in my purse so that I can read it during any free time I have. I'll take that 2 minutes of reading, thank you very much! Heheh.
I literally just finished editing my video about how to find time to read. Great minds think alike! Great tips! My video is scheduled to go up Friday.
If I read my books as much as I watched Parks and Recreation I would have read a book a day this year. Truth hurts. (Goes back to reading)
SAME! parks and rec is my life..benslie😍
I love to read multiple books, especially if they have different themes, like, one is a YA, another is a classic, and another is a fantasy... It makes me more excited to read depending on the mood I'm in
Don't focus on reading more, focus on reading quality content, it's not about how much you read, but what you read. :)
Finding out about Booktube got me way back into reading again!
