Yeah, like what's forward when opening a can? 😅
But of course counter clockwise is the way to go!
Don't punsh new holes! Use smaller 'wrist moves' so the can-openers egde doesn't leave the lid but shears around while by each move advancing the 'hook' a tiny bit forward (counter clockwise).

All the "pastry-days" I think are there to compensate for that the weather is so depressing in our country for 50% of the year 😂
But that said, I think you're lucky starting your time in Sweden during the winter. This way you get to experience the summer highs without being unprepared for the winter lows.
I have some friends who moved here during the summer and they were "devastated" when the winter came around. But after some years they've come to accept the winter darkness. (A very Swedish move if you ask me)

Looking at the triangular shape of your string of kaviar, it guess you might have stabbed the metal sealing with a knife or similar. As I’m sure others have already told you: If you press the top of the cap into the seal, you get a nice star-shaped hole. This goes for most, if not all, tube food.

Welcome to Sweden Chloe! Personally I was surprised that a canadian was unaware of the sun setting at different times during the year. Surely Canada is far enough north to have seasonal changes? My wife used to live basically ON the equator and she had a really hard time transitioning to a reality where the sun didn't rise AND set at basically the same time every day.

  • @KamiKaZantA

First off: welcome to Sweden, enjoy your stay!
The can opener: you went backwards, you are supposed to go forwards.
Cooking spray, what? Sugar-free syrup, what? Most people use butter or some type of cooking oil, but there's also liquid butter/oil mix in bottles.
Black/blood pudding: Slice it in about 1 cm thick and fry it on medium high heat, it doesn't have to cook through as long as it is warm. People serve it with different things, but lingonberry jam is a staple. Others also add bacon, fried eggs, or maybe fried Falukorv/Falu sausage. Needless to say, it can get quite fatty and salty if you use all of it.
Bikes and locks: My regular bikes have been safe for years living in a not so great area. My electric bike got stolen within a month.
Closing times: the bigger the city the longer the opening times. But the state monopoly alcohol store tends to have short opening hours on saturdays and always (I think) closed on sundays. You have to plan your alcohol purchases. You can find beers up to 3.5% in grocery stores.
Semla: going back say 50 years and further back, there were strict regulations on when you could sell semla. I think bakeries could only sell semla just one day or one week around february, if they were caught selling outside those days they could be fined.
Kalles kaviar: you definitively ate it wrong, especially if you are particular with fishy-tasting food. Proper dark bread, spread butter on the bread, sliced boiled egg, and kaviar on top. Or something we did at my grandmother; knäckebröd/crisp bread, butter, kaviar, and chopped chives. The kaviar taste is so devisive with people who didn't grow up with it that it can be used as a prank on tourists. There have been hidden camera type of stuff when a TV crew is visiting another country, set up a table in the middle of a square, and have the locals try kaviar. It's very rare anyone likes it.

As a general rule Sweden is good at berries, baked goods and candy. My brother's wife, who is Canadian, was blown away by the fresh strawberries in Sweden the first time she tried them. The early varieties which you'll start to see in late May are just okay. Starting from July you can find really good ones. That also goes for wild strawberries, raspberries, cloudberries & blueberries (technically they're bilberries but everyone calls them blueberries). In terms of baked goods the must tries are in my opinion: Princesstårta, Budapesttårta, Napoleonbakelse
Shoehorns are a must for any type of shoe with a harder collar, something like a dress shoe. Don't worry about not liking Kalles Kaviar, it's not for everyone, I don't like it either.
And yes, the weather is usually pretty grey and boring around this time if there's no snow. March is a better month, it'll still be sunny around dinnertime then and the light in general is just a lot warmer. I'd say my favourite time is around mid-May to mid-June. Everything is in bloom, the temperature is usually very nice and it'll be sunny almost every day.

This is how I prepare blood pudding:
Start by frying up some bacon until it's really crispy. Leave the grease in the pan. Slice the blood pudding in thin slices and fry it in the bacon grease until crispy on the surface. You don't want too thick slices, or the pudding will be mushy in the middle. Yes, it is supposed to be black. Don't worry, it's not burnt. Serve with bacon and lingonberries, or some other sweet/tart condiment. I like to take some sour apples, slice them up and give them a quick stir fry in a clean pan. Add a little brown sugar to caramelize and some yellow curry powder. This becomes sort of a hot apple chutney that goes (and looks) great with blood pudding.
Serve with some raw cut greens like white cabbge or carrots on the side.
So, why even eat blood pudding? It is cheap and easy to prepare. it is a very good source of iron, so it is great if you are having iron deficiency, especially if you are menstruating or if you are a blood donor.

1: All of Europe stare in disbelief at American bathroom stalls.
3: Go to some kitchen utelsil store and ask for a "Röda Clara". It's a wall mounted can opener. You won't regret getting one.
5: That shoe horn costs like 5 or 10 SEK at Ikea!
6: Cooking spray? Here we buy a brick of butter or margarine!
7: Blood pudding is THE food youo eat when you have a hard time making ends meet.Very cheap way to fill your belly.
8: The rice porridge is a Christmas staple here in Sweden.
9: Pedestrians having the right of way isn't just niceness, it's the law. If you hit a pedestrian on a zebra crossing while driving YOU caused the accident, period. Which means people make sure they don't hit pedestrians.
    10. Here in Stockholm the sun will set like 11:30 PM around midsummer, and rises around 2:30 am.
    11. Swedish folklore says that if you put seven different flowers under your pillow on Midsummer's night, whoever you dream of will be your future spouse.
12: The usual way to eat a semla is to first eat the lid (you may use the lid to scoop up a little cream), then you eat the rest of the bun. One variation is to place it in a bowl of hot milk and then eat it. Semla is available between New year and Easter, but if you're very traditional you only eat them on Mardi Gras.
13: Sweden is a country with a lot of coastline and not so much land area, and crops could sometimes be poor, so we historically survived on fish to a large extent. So of course we eat fish roe. And we invented all sorts of weird methods to preserve our fish, including fermenting it.

Just a friendly pointer on the bike/pedestrian-paths.
By law you should walk on the left side of the road whenever possible (unless otherwise indicated by road-signs, road-markings)
The signs you typically will see are round blue with a bike and pedistrian on them with a line between them (like in the video) but also where the pedestrian is ontop and the bike is below with no line.
When you have the line separation you will walk on the side that the pedestrian is (can be both left and right) and if there is no line you should walk on the left side.

And Kalles kaviar is a bit of an aquired taste, but you should try it WITH stuff, like butter or as your teammate on the eggs, it really breaks up the salty taste and thats the way it's supposed to be. blending the salty with the buttery or eggy taste, or even with cheese makes it taste so much different. Most cans today have easy open, and I don't even have a can opener. But the easiest way to use one is to get one that was made to use with your dominant hand. I gather from your video that you're right handed, so you've got the right one, and you started correctly. But after you've punched the initial hole, lift it up, but keep the tip of it still in the hole and move it anti-clockwise along the can's edge (clockwise if you're using one for left handedness), then push down again. The cutting edge is slightly curved, so it will extend the cut further along the can's edge as you push it down. Continue until you can open the lid, but not until it detaches completely.

Vanilla extract is in the baking isle.
So is maple syrup. You can also find maple syrup in the "American shelf" if you want to get a brand you might be more familiar with.
But, cooking spray is really rare or at least has been. We use squeeze bottle liquid margerine instead or just butter.

As already mentioned in the comments, try using the canopener the other direction (forward instead of backwards), and when eating unflavored kvarg, try adding a bit of drizzled honey on top. Finally when having "Kalles kaviar" and you´re not used to it, I would suggest you try the striped one, it´s a mix of cream cheese and caviar, and has a more smooth taste. Please do keep up your good work, and do more videos like these. As a Swede, this is really interesting to watch!

To get used to kaviar you should put a thin layer of butter then spread a thin layer of kaviar on top, then put sliced hard boiled egg on top of that. Then eventually you can put a good amount of kaviar on top instead of a thin layer underneat the eggs (like the pic in the video). Butter becomes optional once youve aquired the taste for it. Also vetekaka or hönökaka is the best for egg sandwiches imo.

When it comes to the can opener you found the correct starting position, but then you turned the can in the wrong direction.
Blodpudding with lingonberry is really tasty! The problem with blodpudding is that you have to fry it right. Not fried enough it is doughy and yucky, and fried to much it turns hard and burnt. If you are clumsy like me you manage to get it both too burnt on the surface and too raw in the middle.
Traditionally semla is eaten the tuesday before lent, but nowadays you can find them most of January, February and March.

As said, move the can opener forwards, not backwards. We use "Flytande margarin / smör" - liquid margarine / butter, kind of never use anything such on spray cans. You may get some vanilla extract in some stores, but most stores got "vaniljpulver" - vanilla powder which is more common to use. Sugerfree syrup is quite uncommon in regular stores, though available online and at some pharmacies. Though we do have loads of "normal" syrup; white, light, dark, maple, etc.

You eat it a lot around christmas with cinnamon, a little suger and of course milk.

Kalles Kaviar can be an acquired taste for sure with a distinct salty flavour. First regarding the tube you flip the cap and use that to properly puncture the opening. Then we would not use it on toast but on some form of soft bread with butter and on top of say sliced hard-boiled egg. Then when new to it use a small amount as it is quite salty and adjust the amount if you like it.
That said it is a very divisive issue here in Sweden where some love it and others hate it like with liquorice. Personally I love it on some sliced hard-boiled egg like your friend mentioned. It can also be nice with swedish crispbread and a thin layer of butter.

3:21: you're holding the can opener right, but it is easier to "dig" forward into the can lid. The can opener will resist less then. 11:56: you can always buy a semla, but they're harder to find then, the semla has (AFAIK) a long tradition in Sweden, being somehow related to lent and easter. Traditionally the semlas had a premier at the Shrove Tuesday.

    Welcome to Sweden.
    1. You start the other way with the can opener, just go forward 😂
    2. Risgrynsgröt is riceporrige, it's not norwegian. You heat it, and commonly eaten at winter/christmas with cinnamon and sugar and milk. But some eat it all year.
    3. We have some aquired tastes, I guess the most common is Kaviar (smoked roe) and salt liqorice.
Don't eat it like that. Buy faluknäcke (rye crisp bread) and then put butter, sliced boiled egg, and some dill, then kaviar on top. That's how I would do it.
    4. I recommend trying filmjölk, if you liked kvarg. It's another unique Swedish milkproduct - not as high in protein, but really good I think. It's a bit sour, but doesn't taste like yoghurt at all. Very common for breakfest or I sometimes just drink it and put some sugar in it.
Talk about coming the wrong winter though, cause the weather this winter has been so terrible. Just gray and not even cold. Not even in january Usually it's always cold and snow, like last winter was fantastic & beautiful.

About kvarg, my son ate a lot of that mixed with frozen strawberries (no sugar) while he trained 6 days a week. Well he ate a lot of other food too, but luckily enough he went to a gymnasium (high school) that let the kids eat (free as this is Sweden) at a big company restaurant which always had three different courses and you could eat as much as you wanted. Saved my back from having to carry home all that extra food!😂
He bought the kvarg and strawberries himself because he wanted the one with most protein. Can’t remember if it was the one from Lidl or ICA though.

"Semla" or "Fettisdagbulle" (Compare with france "Mardi gras" = Fat Tuesday)
Is from the time when we were Catholics, i.e. around 1550. It has of course changed a bit, but the principle was that you should eat well before Lent, which began 40 days (I think) before Easter. It was only a few days then. Nowadays, the rolls come earlier and earlier every year. Not so long ago they came during February.

You just popped up in my feed and I am glad you did. Always nice to see people learning about your own culture and traditions. The rice pudding (Risgrynsgröt) is definitely not norwegian. It is a very swedish speciality that is most popular around christmas served hot with milk, sugar and cinnamon or as a dessert called "Ris a la Malta", which is rice pudding mixed with whipped cream and vanilla sugar, served with raspberry/strawberry sauce and if any other scandinavian country would be involved, it would be Denmark since they have their traditional christmas dessert called "risalamande" which is more or less the same as the swedish but they put chopped almonds in it too (to be honest, it makes it even better). The swedish fika tradition is probably our best invention and semla is the king of all swedish pastries. Yes, you could say kanelbulle should be nr1 but I think semla is at the very top simply because it is restricted to a certain period of time. Traditionally it was pretty strict that you only consumed them on shrove tuesday (Mardi Gras or in Swedsh, Fettisdag) but the last 30-35 years the time to sell and eat them has been extended so much that nowadays you can eat them from beginning of january until easter.

That’s really interesting! In Russia, we have a similar dish called 'рисовая каша' (rice kasha, or rice porridge), but we eat it all year round, mostly for breakfast. I believe it’s cooked the same way as the Scandic versions (slowly simmering rice in milk until it becomes thick and creamy), some people add sugar, butter, honey, or jam, while others eat it plain.

    • @stefanhakola8980
      @stefanhakola8980 11 годин тому +1

@@polinamish Yes, that sounds about the same. We eat it all year around also as a "easy" meal with some sort of sweetener and topping like raspberry jam or so. This particular way of eating it described here is more linked to Christmas. You boil the rice in cream (or half cream/milk if you want to lower your fat intake) and eat it with sugar, milk and cinnamon. If you follow tradition you put a whole almond in the porridge before serving and the one that get the almond is gonna be the next one to be married.

for kalles try having way less and definitely try it with hardboiled sliced egg, I can't imagine having it straight up like that, that's crazy to me. But yes, it's an acquired taste, u want an amount that makes the egg the "right" amount of salty cuz u're not putting salt on the egg slices, just kaviar.

    • @TheHuffur
      @TheHuffur 6 днів тому

      ^ this!
Kaviar should be handled the same as surströmming, people new to it should start with TINY amounts of it and with all the 'condiments' which in the case of kaviar is either butter/cheese/egg or all of them.
Kaviar and surströmming should be seen more like a spice than the main ingredient, you only put as much of it as you like and since both have such a strong taste its best to start with "barely nothing" until you get used to them and gain the acquired taste.

Well, to say that risgrynsgröt has nothing whatsoever to do with Norway isn't entirely correct though, because they eat rice porridge in Norway too, but the dish wasn't invented there - it originates from Asia.
