- Amalie Bruun, a 32-year-old classically trained musician from Copenhagen and the one-woman force behind Myrkur, says it’s challenging being a female artist in “black metal,” a music genre that is both male-dominated and widely misunderstood.

Critics of the music - an extreme form of heavy metal that features shrieking, fast tempos and distorted guitars - think it’s “just about Satan” or “a little bit idiotic,” says Bruun.
From 'This singer is making black metal into art' - nypost.com/2017/09/21/this-he...
“It’s not seen at the artistic level of other musical genres, but anyone who plays it can tell you otherwise because it’s extremely hard,” she says.
Bruun compares the guitar work of black metal to violin players in a classical orchestra, and says she gravitates to it because there is beauty in the rawness and harshness of the sound. Myrkur means “darkness” in Icelandic.
“Beauty isn’t pretty, beauty hits you in the face, beauty is like nature - it’s just brutal,” she says.
Despite her defense of the genre, Bruun herself is under attack from black metal devotees - mostly American men - who base their hate around her gender.
She has received death threats and hate videos and has been the subject of hit job pieces claiming she is ruining black metal.
“Am I really that powerful? Can I ruin a whole genre? I don’t think so,” she says with a laugh.
While the bulk of the criticism is easy for her to shrug off, there are times she worries for her safety.
“I’ve had some instances where people in their threats, they name and mention people that I know, people around me,” she says. “You actually worry are they able to get within a physical distance of you.”
Bruun doubts she would get the same volume of threats if she were a man.
“It seems to be a very witch-hunt kind of thing when women try to do something,” she says. “They don’t want you in there, you know, playing with their toys.”
Bruun has no intention of backing down and wants to show audiences that art is very much a part of black metal - regardless of the gender of the singer.
Her new album, “Mareridt,” is now out on Relapse Records.

She's a fantastic talent and we need more artists like her in black metal. Love both of her records.
Thats not black metal. Seriously. Its not hard to understand. I swear.
She didn't even write half of her stuff? it was typically written and produced by Garm from Ulver.....
I am agree
Love her so strong dark raw female energy
Imagine a channel called New York Post having such a badly written title and not even editing it correctly. What a useless new world we live in.
Are u kidding she's not ruining the genre she making it relevant again..
Through stealing the music of other Black Metal bands

She's a true blaze in the northern sky.
Oh she hasn't even burned down one church.

My friend who introduced my to Heilung also played Myrkur for me. It's funny, I skipped all heavy metal since Led Zeppelin (the first band I ever became obsessed with at age 9, and squeezed all the juice out of by age 12.) So I went from Zeppelin straight to Heilung, and now I'm realizing Heavy Metal has gone through so many transformations, it's time to completely reassess it. Heilung was a great place to start, but Myrkur has been a fantastic next stop. And unlike Heilung, it's still firmly in the Metal genre.
i discovered her music due to her Kulning singing...
she is great. and yes i do think the genre is underrated.
the funny thing is that many metal, and any variation, artist are very well educated in music from opera to rock to folklore. so, how this genre can not have the same value than any other one?
I don't listen to metal music, but i do listen to her most 'slow' songs and other artists as well and i can see the genre is a intelligent genre
great art design... she's a powerful singer
Her: you wouldn't send me death threats if I was a man

I like her but there's some serious delusions of grandeur here. Trolls aren't a problem.... they are trolls.
While it's generally harder for women to break into Male dominated areas, metal has been penetrated successfully by women since Wendy O hit the scene back in the 70's and 80's.
You're gonna have haters, doesn't mean you blow it out of proportion and wage a fake battle. Women are doing just fine in rock and metal.
Black metal is sacred to black metal purists and she's just being judged by them and Male chauvinists. They may even be mad at the delivery of the composition and not just her.
You're a gift to us fans M, just do your thing and ignore the hate.
It not necessary dude every artist know that, nobody ever quit the game cuz there's too much pressure. For me I absolutely love her artistry and image
@@kotanovakota I'm not sure what you mean. I never mentioned her cracking under pressure or anything like that. I just dislike fake movements and in this social climate especially we need even less fake outrage.
Men are always the haters
yeah, of course the problem with her is just because of her being a woman not taking credit for whole genre which she is desecrating with her hipster and top model style
@MB She used to be a top model. Read her bio. Calm your voice, its more like you are the one thats insane
I started listening to black metal because of her.
Black Metal has always been artistic, in fact I'd say that it is one of THE most artistic forms of music.
Well she's a bit late to make black metal artistic. Thanks ihsahn!
This band is the band more different I've ever seen
Shes amazing and she belongs!! Purests are the biggest posers in every genre! 🖤🖤 black metal queen 🖤🖤
WEIL ICH EINE FRAU BIN?!!
Hvad snakker du om Amalie?
Vi vil da hellere end gerne have så mange kvindelige artister ind i metal genren som overhovedet muligt.
i love this girl
She is right. Metal takes way more skill than any other genre!
So what is the real story on why they don't like her? There are tons of women in metal. If they don't like her, there is some other reason.
gorillas213 - but isn't the Kvlts complaining about what is legitimate or not in a music style an act of victim-hood in and of itself ironically? One could just ignore it and go about their business, if it didn't really trigger them as they allegedly claim it doesn't it.... So if somebody points out this paradox then suddenly in doing so the topic becomes political?... but apolitical if you submit to Kvlts?... Authoritarian much? Logically Kvlts haven't organized or rooted out WHY they are so bothered by what they see. Maybe its fear. It's seems more like a teenage visceral reaction. If anything, this conservatism from Kvlts, especially from people who aren't even musicians in the first place, have enacted to be more the "Woe is me" card by their own definition.... Rationally there is a failure from their part of making their argument tangible and provable so far.
The hate she gets has to do with her background. She was a pop artist from (I believe) Denmark and decided to go in this route. It's not so much "women don't belong" but rather "she doesn't belong", but this interview makes it sound like she is saying the former rather than the latter. I am not saying i agree with this*, just this is the reason for the backlash.
* - (I am indifferent, as her lyrics aren't in English and I have a hard time getting into metal i can't understand even when I read a lyrics sheet, heh)
Derek Albert - but itsn't it a positive that she left pop music to make heavier music instead? She left modeling and pop music to make music she is more fond of. She walked away from a lot of money and stability to do this kind of music... if that is not genuine for an artist, then give me an example of what is...
The Electrocist I agree. but you know how elitist people can be. anything outside of the expected and accepted is almost immediately deemed inferior, no matter the quality of the end result.
Nocturn Vaka she has more talent and vision than 90% of everyone in the genre. That’s why she’s killing it.

Sorry but this is all coming from the same woman singing about going shopping at the Albee square mall with R A the rugged man. No true Metal musician talks about how Hard it is to play.
Who made you «metal jugde»?
I have seen countless interwievs with known metal artists talking about how hard it can be playing different fills, solo’s, riffs and vocal ranges ect. Corpsgrinder collects teddy bears, alice Cooper plays golf, Kirk Hammet surfs and King Diamond likes cats. Who gives a F?
If this is a gender thing, than F*** you!
Respect to the metal sisters.
Please explain "True Metal"
She was once a pop singer.
No one on here knew that. Thanks very much for that information.
So what? Ulver turned into a Dark Electro band. Shall we crucify them?
She stole the riffs and music from Ulver, a band known for creating 3 of the most classical Black Metal albums in history and also stole from Absurd, a Black Metal National Socialist band from Germany
I mean, Kristoffer Rygg the vocalist of Ulver produced her album so...
@@michalszerszen9638 Yeah because they paid him a huge amount of money to produce it. Whose gonna say no to a couple million dollars???
Name me one riff that is a copy of an ulver riff
Are you able to give the exact passages in her songs that are supposed to be stolen?
