      Can you imagine though? What if your suit ruptured and you caught the virus thing and then you docked at a station and caused an epidemic leading to community goals for cures and stuff.
      THAT is emergent gameplay frontier. Admittedly, they are making steps in the right direction but it's taken 2 years post release to even get voice acted logs in the game?!

      Humans and human environment carry thousands of different cells, bacterias and viruses. Odds are that those alien viruses could have been killed I think. We are alient and dangerous to them the same way they are to us.

    • @Dark__Thoughts
      @Dark__Thoughts 7 років тому +12

      Alien micro organisms are most likely going to be pretty much "incompatible" with us, but that's all hard to tell because we've never found one yet. Still, pandemics are pretty much the number one most likely thing that could cause our species to go extinct here on Earth, a crowded spaceship with limited resources and FTL capabilities is even worse and a pretty scary scenario.

    • @The_Burning_Sensation
      @The_Burning_Sensation 7 років тому +5

      There's really no reason to think an extraterrestrial virus would be any less compatible with us than a terrestrial one. If you're talking about bacteria, sure-- that's a life form, and bound to be limited by all sorts of environmental factors. But viruses have no metabolic processes at all-- they're like random bits of data.

    • @razr6302
      @razr6302 7 років тому +2

      Think about it as if it is in relation to the disease that the Spaniards brought to central America. The indigenous people were susceptible to the disease and their bodies couldnt fight it off, yet it was alien to them. The "incompatible" argument falls apart there. We would be in the same shoes as the indigenous people of central America. Our bodies wouldnt know wtf the foreign microbe is, therefore we couldnt fight it and it could potentially kill us just like happened with this Generation Ship. They really should have ejected the infected person into space for the greater good of the community as soon as they realized the infection was alien. Perhaps kept a sample in a lab that would be indefinitely quarantined, with only one or two scientists/doctors studying it until they could come up with an immunization, or die trying.

    • @Mrrshal
      @Mrrshal 7 років тому +4

      +Viral Inspirations but the virus will not have the key protein for accessing the cell. Our earth viruses works only because we both coexisted MILLIARDS of years together. Coevolution.
      Our body will try to reject any foreigh bodies.
      And again: just by the number of living things in our body, we have more odds to kill the virus/bacteria since we have more types of organisms and immune mechanisms!
      Also viruses do not live by themselves because they need other living things to reproduce.

    I imagine this ship is going to wind up a quarantine zone fairly soon. Patient zero cut himself while sampling an asteroid, so whatever this thing is was able to live in an airless, sub zero environment with constant exposure to solar radiation. A cold, enclosed spacecraft full of old corpses sounds like a paradise (read: breeding ground) by comparison.

    My god the voice acting in this is amazing, the logs really tug at the heart strings, the thought of all of those people dying, knowing that there was no place to go to escape the virus, on a ship where the only point of your existence was to give birth to someone who would eventually give birth to another person, I feel like I would go nuts on a generation ship

      W4DER that, and it needs to be organically discoverable, like with a discovery scanner pulse giving you an idea that a beacon pointing to something like what was in the video was within the current system. Then you go to any stellar body within the system to try an find the beacon(s) telling the player how to find the generation ship (for example), and voila! No need to decipher overly cryptic messages, just the wherewithal to seek and you shall find.

    This is such a nice story. The mystery, the spookiness, his voice and the log, the aesthetics of the ship.... It's just so good. Elite really needs a lot more stuff like this. Like what happened "back in the day" of rocket fuel, tragedies like this are just so interesting to me, especially if it's spooky like this. Like a mini game, mini story that you can experience.
    I'm really impressed I have to admit. :)

    • @punchnazis3498
      @punchnazis3498 7 років тому

      there's a surprising amount of stuff, it's just hard to find, because you get few or no clues about where to go (which is nice to an extent, but it would also be nice if frontier made some of it more accessible). I went to some abandoned planetary settlements that someone else found (didn't even show up on scanners, so you have to know the coordinates or randomly stumble across it), and they had cool stories like this. One was about trapped miners and a corporate cover up, and the other was about a mysterious dead body and creepy "presence" lurking on the planet surface. Unlike this though, the data logs weren't voice acted.
      And just like the generation ships (and the planetary cities, stations, outposts, etc) the settlements are really atmospheric. One of them had an alarm that would periodically go off, with a voice telling you to evacuate (with screwed up sound, because it's been repeating for dozens or hundreds of years). Now frontier just needs to tie more of it into missions, and to also give us some FPS gameplay, to really bring this stuff to life.

    • @DavidKnowles0
      @DavidKnowles0 7 років тому

      Part of the problem is a lot of the stuff so far have been found because the player base have cheated, so the player base isn't being trained enough into how to find these things. The Guardians bases were suppose to be discovered in a certain way that was abandoned because we found them use the game trailer instead, Jacques station was suppose to be found following clues planted all over human space in news feeds, which would have surely train hundreds of people into reading the local news feeeds, but someone instead found it using the filters on the galactic map.

    The game needs loads more content like this. Stories and content that makes it available to a lot of players, these mysteries are so far and few between most players will never be a part of it till it's all over.

    • @Hoto74
      @Hoto74 7 років тому +2

      That is how a big sandbox game works. There is no "every player get the same content" and that is good so. You can be lucky and get more out of the game in 100h than other players in 1000h or you are the other player. Life is not fair, a sandbox game is not fair too.
      All what you can do to be on the better side is, to watch out for such discoveries from the community and fly there by your own like I do.

    • @StarlancerAstro
      @StarlancerAstro 7 років тому

      I'm not expecting the same content just more, more things to discover more stories to unfold, even if they are shared between players, actual missions that require more then fly here turn around and fly back. The only real content at the moment besides the rare once in a blue moon stories is player created content, expeditions, player groups, etc. I was part of the group that first discovered the barnacles and sure it was exciting, but exciting once a year or so doesn't cut it for content. Even tying CGs into stories would be great but that too most of the time is a missed opportunity. I could go on with ideas but they seem to fall on deaf ears.

    • @Hoto74
      @Hoto74 7 років тому

      Sorry, misunderstood this. You are right, there should be much more in it, but that is easy said, we don't know why there is not more in it, possible they have a too small dev team because of too less money for such things. Money is badly too often the reason why there is so much unused potential in a game and ED is a hugh game because they must fill a complete galaxy.
      I must say I like user generated Content, players can do so much by herself to fill a Sandbox game, but you need good peoples that plan and make that stuff the right way so that many have fun with it. We could also need much more of such players.

    Did a quick bit of comparing of the original message and the data files found. It seems to the original message is a corrupted version of the 4th log with the directions transplanted into it.
    Will be interesting if there are others out there and if they follow this pattern.

    Imagine finding one of these, fully active, still traveling in deep space, with a crew that has no Idea of the events hat transpired over the years that their ship was in flight and no way to contact everyone. Imagine being told that your journey was a waste, and you arrived in a couple hours because of faster than light travel. Creepy.

    Well. I should finally fully upgrade my ASP Explorer so I can find those mysteries myself. Especially the mysteries around the Guardians and their ruins are very interesting or the sudden appearance of that aline ship which is pulling other commanders out of the hyperspace. I'll lay my focus on this and if I get the Federal Corvette along the way it is just a little bonus. My main focus is to get to know what the hell is going on in this galaxy full of mysteries

    • @Hoto74
      @Hoto74 7 років тому +5

      And even when it is not true, it is good that they said it, because the thinking you can every time found something what no other have seen yet makes this universe so much more interesting.
      The problem are here more the players that didn't find anything in too short time and saying "there is nothing interesting in this universe".
      As a player you need to have patience and enough fantasy to dive into a gaming world, leaving a gaming world, a second life. But there are too many players out there, for that games are only the for fast fun, they can't dive into a gaming world and they can't living a second life. For the second one the first one are often only Freaks, Nerds etc. But deep in the heart ED is a Freak/Nerd game. ;)

    • @Hoto74
      @Hoto74 7 років тому

      Right, because of the hugh amount of Space in this game even 100 hours are too less. ED want to be realistic and it did want that such things should be special for the complete gameworld. If every player have a high chance to find a Generation Ship, than that means that there must be many thousands out of it in the space and that would ruin it totally.
      And if someone find something like this you can be sure that fast many other players know it too and so everyone have the chance to get there by themself and watch it.
      And yes, I never find such important things, but the most time I was there by myself after one player find something. But to be true, I never searched for something special, I found all that little special things for me on my way. Ok, excluded my small exploration trip a year ago. ;)

      At 50% the speed of light it would take about 17 years to reach Alpha Centauri, so I assume it's doable, as long as the ship is travelling relatively fast.

    • @Dahaka27
      @Dahaka27 7 років тому +1

      Travelling at appreciable fractions of the speed of light like 1/2 would not allow you to see very much of the space around you with any amount of meaningful accuracy due to relativistic distortion which would be extremely hazardous, so it's unlikely they were going THAT fast.
      Not to mention being able to brake down your velocity enough so you can stop and survey asteroids like what happened here would take a LONG time with subluminal drives travelling that fast.
      We have no idea when these transmissions were recorded either so it's possible that the disaster took place reasonably recently within 200 years or so they might have been traveling slower for almost a thousand years possibly.

    • @benrussell-gough1201
      @benrussell-gough1201 7 років тому +12

      Don't forget relativistic space-time dilation effects. At very high sublight speeds (>0.25c) the rate of time progression inside the ship starts to slow down relative to observers in nearby star systems. Because the ship will also become longitudinally foreshortened by more relativistic effects, it will seem to move far faster than it is
      actually moving. By the time you reach half the speed of light, time is travelling 15% slower inside the ship and the ship is 15% shorter and 15% heavier than it ought to be. Once you get up to around 9/10 the speed of light, this distortion has increased to over 50%.
      The ship has been in space for centuries. Thanks to the magic of general relativity, it's possible that the crew may have only died a few months ago, ship's time.
