How to Share files between a Mac and PC in 5 easy steps
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 гру 2017
- In this video, I show you how to set up file sharing on your Mac and PC and create a share folder for the transfer of files between the two computers.
All you need to do is ensure that both your Mac and PC are on the same network.
I am using the latest version of Mac OSX on a Macbook Pro and Windows 10 on a surface device.
If you are on Windows 11 you may want to check out my updated video: • How to Share files bet... - Навчання та стиль
I have just produced an updated version of this video showing you the same methods if you are on Windows 11. ua-cam.com/video/UogQu1S0p2Y/v-deo.html
Video quality is shit
If you're watching this past 2020 there is no Sharing options at 1:50. It is updated to
"Network for sharing centre"
then
"change advanced sharing settings"
To get to 1:55
Thanks!
Now I just have to fine where the @4:25 "Connect to server" option has moved to since OS11 does not appear to have a "GO" menu item 🤔
MVP.
@@JoshKaufmanstuff hit "command K" the guy says it on the video bud
You r a legend
I have a Mac mini tho😢
For those who are having issues with the username and password it is due to the fact that windows has changed the way things work as far as your actual windows license and what account info it is tied to. It would not accept my PC's log in username and pin. It wanted my actual Microsoft email and password and it then worked perfectly. Since windows is tied to your account in many cases now, this may be what is hindering you.
Thank you very much!
Thank you but for me, it is still not working :/
Anyone figured out what to do in that case?
DUDE!!! You save my life!
ty so much still works after 3 years ;D
FUCK! So I will need to sign in with hotmail, which means Windows will ask for the password everytime I turn on the computer. What a fucking disgrace.
Great tutorial. So clear and concise. So much more easy to understand than a lot of others. Thank you very much, it worked first time for me
I can't thank you enough for this tutorial. It was so easy even I could do it. I was beginning to get worried about my old pc and loosing all the pictures I have on it..but this made life so much easier and because I have so many pictures to move it does take a while. Thanks again.
You're very welcome!
I just want to say that this was an amazing tutorial! Straight to the point and not a history lesson on how the wheel was built. I have spent almost two hours trying to get my computers to share. Went on youtube, typed in what I wanted, and your video was the first one to pop up. The only problem I had was the password part. I didn't realize it would be my Microsoft Account password. I kept using my laptop password. Someone had commented on another comment below about it and that is how I found out. I hope the next computer problem I come across you will have the answer. I am subscribing now. Thanks again for a great video!
Thanks so much. Glad it was helpful.
I couldn't agree more with Sharon. I was trying to use google drive and other methods and this was so much easier. Thank you so so much. Major live saver! :)
Absolutely. Finally a real tutorial.🙏🏻
Also, Registered user in my case was my email!
Thank you it wasnt taking my desktop pass
After spending HOURS... trying to make it with USB, or drop box... YOU JUST SAVED MY LIFE. Ok... it's a bit too much... but you saved my precious time! Thank you so much!!!
Great to hear. Yes it's so much more practical than using a usb stick or drop box. So glad it worked. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
It should work with previous versions of windows, however I have only tested on Windows 10.
4 years later and still helping! I was selling my Mac so I put everything on an external hard drive to transfer over to my pc. Only to realize afterwards that it formatted the hard drive for a Mac so no files were readable on pc. I never realized you could partition a hard drive for both kinds. Anyways... I'm glad my Mac didn't sell right away as I found this video and plugged in my harddrive to the Mac and I am currently transferring files to my pc. Thanks a lot!
Great to hear it was helpful!
Amazingly simple tutorial, worked instantly, thanks. (but guys don't move the folder on windows, unless you know that you must re-enable the sharing stuff, and reconnect on the mac after)
Excellent, very simple and straight forward. Thanks.
You’re welcome. Thanks 🙏 for commenting🙏
Cheers Mate!! Very easy to follow. Legend Ta
There are sooo many articles trying to explain how to do this and you've done it much better. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome! So glad it was helpful!
You are the man. Thank you so much. This has been a struggle until now.
3 years later... this video's instructions work beautifully without a hitch!!! thanks great video
Great to hear that. Oh was it really 3 years ago. Time flies and glad it is still current!
super helpful!! best tutorial I've found so far. everyone needs to be aware of this. thanks again :)
Great to hear that. You’re most welcome!
Great video. Easy to follow, perfect. Thank you.
It's great and helpful, very clear instruction. Finally, it settles my problem. Thank you for sharing.
works perfectly. great explanation
Awesome. Thanks for checking out the video and for the feedback!
Thanks for the great tutorial. In my case I had to setup a local account on my PC before I could connect. Just in case anyone else is having issues connecting. This might be due to an update in Windows from the time the tutorial was made.
Amir Valinia How do you do this?
amazong thank you so much, i wanted to start a youtube channel, and i couldnt be able to edit on windows, so i searched how to transfer files, and i found you and i am so happy that you made this video. Thank you so much.
But did it help? I can’t do it to save my life
Thanks, man, this is so helpful. I literary have to come to watch this specific video every quarter. :p
Worked Perfectly and I am on windows 7! Thank You!
Great to know it also works on win 7. Thanks for the feedback 👍
I never comment on youtube videos like these, because most of the time they're a complete waste of time! But everything worked, so thank you very much!!
Great to hear and thanks for commenting. It’s always great to receive feedback👍
The best tutorial I found so far for sharing files on Mac & PC. Just subscribed. Thank you sir
Thanks so much. Greatly appreciated!
Absolutely brilliant video. Very easy to follow. Thank you !
HOURS later I discovered you and your advices. Thank you so much.
Great 👍 glad to be of assistance. Cheers
Great - thanks. This saves me having to email things to my Mac in the next room! No, I'm not tech savvy!
Yes much easier than emailing and also allows you to share larger files as email is often limited👍
Thank you for this! Extra points on clarity, super easy to follow!
You're very welcome!
I agree in entirety with Bambi's comments below. A Well presented explanation. I will use this site again as I often get lost in the tech world of computing. Thank you.
👌👍✌👏. It worked! I've been trying to get them connected
Great news. Nice to get your feedback. Cheers!
Touch Technology Review Had to access the mac on windows 10 so I transferred from windows instead of from mac to windows. I couldn't get past the password request on the mac after connecting. Any advice?
If you are going the other way and want to access the mac from the pc, then make sure you take note of step 1 in enabling file sharing on the mac in System Preferences. You have to tick on the Account name in the windows File sharing box. This allows you to access the mac from a PC. See how that goes.
Touch Technology Review
I meant to say that I could not access the windows pc from the mac as shown in the video. I accidentally got access from windows to mac
Oh i see, its hard to say what could be stopping you from getting access to the PC from the Mac. When you type in the SMB address if it comes up with a username and password prompt make sure you enter the Admin details, that is the username and password you used to set up the computer. See if that works. If you don't get as far as that make sure that the PC is set to allow visibility on your network and allow users access in the Network and Sharing options. Let me know how you go.
Thank you! I just busted out a 15 year old hard drive formatted for mac that I wanted to back up, there was a lot of old videos I made that I wanted to save on my newer computer, since I don't know how much time that old hard drive has in it. I'm so happy that I got to back up all my hard work when I was younger.
Great to hear!
I just gotta say I am so thankful for this great video. It worked on the first shot! All I had to do different that was not explained in this video was select read and write on my Mac's "staff" and on my Mac's "everyone" icons under the sharing section. Thanks for the great tutorial!
Great to hear it worked! Cheers!
thanks it worked for me
Great 👍
Observation: Use the IP to connect---if WIN-10 uses static IP. Otherwise, best to use the machine's name when connecting (use: "ipconfig /all" to retrieve the name or via Settings->System->About).
Great video! Straight to the point and very easy to follow. I was able to follow along this whole video without pausing once haha thank you so much!
Great to hear. Thanks for the feedback!
Thank you very much, it was pretty helpful for backing everything up before a clean OSX install.
Thanks so much
Tanner Pasco You’re welcome. Thanks
Great! But how about the other way around? I want to have the server folder (the main host) to be the mac, and I want the windows to view/access the folder located originally on the mac.
Run Windows Bootcamp on your Mac and use a Hackintosh.
@@colingraham1585 nah, waste of storage and optimization of macs
Go back into properties on your pc and select on sharing-advanced sharing-permissions and allow all permissions. Then reconnect the folder to your mac, should work.
Finally, looking through all these comments I was wondering the same thing, because I am on my mac more than my pc so I don't want to have my pc on all the time to work.
@@pablomarin1475 I tried this, but I'm not sure I understand because it seems like reconnecting the pc folder to the mac will not move the host to the mac. Am I correct, could you help clarify? Thank you so much for replying. Been trying to figure this out.
This video has saved this Macbook from being exchanged to another Windows OS laptop. I tried almost everything and thanks to your straight to the point video I am now successful and my video files have transferred to my Mac. You are the man!!!
Great news! Glad to hear it worked and that the video was helpful. Thanks 🙏 for watching and for your feedback. Cheers!
You saved the day. Your step by step guide helped me transfer what I needed in no time at all.
Awesome. Great to hear that it was helpful!
I get to the window on my Mac @5:40 and I can't seem to enter the right information. I tried both the name I gave my account on Windows, variations of that name in terms of caps and space, as well as my actual PC name (via Control Panel, System & Security, System). I even went back to my sharing folder on my Mac and enabled windows file sharing just to see if that worked. I still cannot connect, not even as a guest
Same problem did you ever find a solution?
I had the same problem. I later found out that my username was my email for microsoft that I signed in the computer with. Hope this helps...
Same problem
If it keeps saying "Access Denied" on the Mac, make sure you have a password on you're PC and enter the username for ur PC and the PW you just made and it should work then
YESSSSSSS. it was my email address not the name the pops up on the login screen. You rock!
After a few hours of intense frustration I can now transfer files between my mac and PC. What was my solution? I created a new user on my windows PC with a "PASSWORD". I'll probably never use this new account for anything but at least I have my files accessible. I just wish somewhere it would have said you need a PASSWORD before going any further! I realize mac's are super anal when it comes to security and require a password for almost everything. Anyways, thanks for your video it was very informative and helpful.
Ive got to the password stage but it's not any of the passwords I thought it would be - do I have to create a new user on the PC especially to create a previously non-existing password? This is all very confusing!!
Thank you - this was simple, clear and easy to follow. Much appreciated!
Great to hear! You are most welcome!
Thanks So much for the video. I have been trying so many different methods without result but you saved me
I never comment on anything, but I just have to say this is AWESOME
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. It is always appreciated! All the best.
Thank you! Please include how to find the name of the server next time. I was lost and ended up finding the solution from someone in your comment section having the same problem

Excellent tutorials. So simple and easy transfer.
This was honestly the best step-by-step tutorial ever. Thank-you
Thanks so much. Glad you liked it!
thank you boss

For those that didn’t set a windows password. Just lock your pc and then create a password. After that you should be able to log in from he Mac with the password. I guess it wants you to create a windows password for this feature to work.
how do i create a password is it the same as having a pin?
@@yoimerbaez I am having the same problem, I tried my Microsoft Account password but it's not working either :(

anya solutions?
I had the same problem and i think i figured it out. Remove the PIN login option from your user profiles. After I removed the PIN login option the actual password worked. I saw your comment earlier and I had the same question. Give it a try. I hope it works.
@@journyman2010 No need to remove PIN. Just in start of login, do 'choose option' where both PIN & Password option comes. PIN option will be default & only when u need to share files, choose Password as login
I’m dealing the same issue how to get over it? Anyone
@@hasanatif4082 Go to sleep..then wake it by pressing power button. Then login using password instead of pin..should work
I typed in the IP address and pressed connect and it says "There was a problem connecting to the server" then it says the IP address and it says "the server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection and then try again". What can I do?
Same happened to me, but then I tried again and it worked!
I get the same error message, no matter how many times I try or restart.
Could you solve the problem?
I have the same one.
Same here 😭
I have the same problem, could anyone solve this?
I want to thank you soooo much for this video, it is clear and concise and made it easy for an old man to transfer files from my Mac to my laptop! Once more many many thanks
Really pleased to hear that. Thanks for checking out the video and for the feedback!
Who knew...! You just made my life so much easier... I do a lot of work on both Mac and PC and I would send large files via WeTransfer, external hard drives or flash drives ( I'm talking GB's worth of video/audio files)... And with externals I would have to change cables from USB to Thunderbolt and back again. Making sure I always had the cables handy... This is so much easier and a whole lot less time-consuming... Worked like a charm once I figured out I need my Windows User Name and password to access the folder on my Mac... Thanks a million... You Rock dude!
Great to hear! Glad it was helpful. Yes so much easier than messing about with We Transfer or connecting drives. Cheers!
I don't have "Sharing Options" where you have it in windows10 can't continue with video...
I had the same issue, some things must have gotten reorganized n an update. If you click “Network and Sharing Center”, then “Chamge advanced sharing settings” on the left side of the new window, it will take you where you need to go.
Easy when it works. Not so much when it doesn't.😕
Very helpful tutorial, mate! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much!! Been trying to share files between PC and Mac for so long and just couldn't get it until your video. You explained it perfectly!
You're very welcome!
@5:40 How do I know my servers username and password?
For the username, you can also go to Command Prompt as you did for the IP address and write "whoami", press "enter" and you should see your username. Or, you can open any PDF file on Microsoft Edge and you should see C:/Users/[usename] in the URL. [usename] should be your username.
For the password, it's your Microsoft account's password, not your pin.
@@clairedo7735 DUDE..... THANK YOU... ugh... I was like "what did I miss"... Your comment was way too helpful 👌🏻❤️

Im not sure what login/password i need to log into the server. I tried my Microsoft login/password on the Mac when im trying to connect to the server and it wont work. I used the same login/password I use to log into my Microsoft online account and the account on my surfacebook.....doesnt work
I think you confound password and pin. Pin is only used to login your device, while password is used to open your Microsoft account and everything else. Though, you can use your password to login your Surface Book too.
I just figured out how to find out since I had the same issue. on Windows type in the searchbar "netplwiz" and click on that icon. You will see your username there. As for the password, for me it was the same password I type in when I open my computer. I hope it helps :)

I don't understand what password to use at 5:44. It's not my lock screen digits, it's not my Outlook account or local windows account.
On your PC, hold CNTL and ALT at the same time...hit Delete to bring up Task Manager. Then, click More Details...then Users...and see what your username is. I assume you know your Windows password. :)

The username is your linked Microsoft email address. The password is what you use to access your PC not the password to access your email. This worked for me. Transferred a file after and all.

im confused about the password, i dont ever remember setting a password
The password to your login on the Mac/PC
Yeah the password it’s asking for is the one on the PC. The “username” will probably auto populate as whatever it is on the Mac. Erase that and type in the username of your PC account followed by the PC password.... then you’re in. I just did this and all is magically well.
