GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE (2011) Revisited - Awfully Good Movies

- After 2007's GHOST RIDER was a flop with critics and fans (but a respectable hit commercially), Sony opted to continue the franchise more economically in the days before their shared Spider-Verse. Slashing the budget, they hired the directorial duo Neveldine/Taylor, who had cult hits with the CRANK series. With Nicolas Cage returning, all involved undoubtedly hoped this would salvage the franchise. Still, some curious, creative choices were made along the way, such as making the movie PG-13, a rating Neveldine/Taylor were totally unsuited for. The result was a movie that underperformed at the box office and might have fractured the Neveldine/Taylor duo forever, as they haven't made a movie together since. It's this week's Awfully Good Movie here on JoBlo Originals!

That face he makes as he is transforming into Ghost Rider is classic and hilarious.
It’s iconic
"Nic Cage is a Multiverse of Madness unto himself" had me creasing, spot on 😆
I've said for years that despite the overall quality of the film, no design will ever top Ghost Rider's look in SOV, and I still stand by that. I love the black skull and bubbling melted jacket combo. The thick black smoke he emitts from the flames is the icing on the cake for me. The MCU is gonna need to produce something special to make him look better than he did in this film.
Indeed💯💯💯
Maybe MCU in 2008, maybe
If only Spirit Of Vengeance had a better story and been R Rated.
@@dericjames2018 It really just need a good director.
Sure but it still sucked Lol
The best part in this movie is that Ghost Rider is pissing like a flame thrower and looking back with a smile.
I love the way SOV was filmed, in that manic batshit insane style. Very tone appropriate for the character
Hey Jesse!
I never laughed so hard at an AGM episode. Cage is the gift that keeps on giving! 🤣🤣🤣
I thought the Ghost Rider movies were guilty pleasures. They look pretty cool and Nicolas Cage was as crazy as ever. They just don't have alot of flame on them bones.
Nicolas Cage was as crazy as ever.
The most true words ever spoken. 🤜🤜🤜🤜💯
“Scraping at the door. Scraping at the doooooar!”
Lol. Oh shlt, now I can't get that outta my head again. Everytime i knock on a door i hear it. Lol.
Nicolas Cage was my late mother’s favorite actor and she absolutely loved the Ghost Rider films just as much as I did, I know they did a lot of wrong in both films but they’re my favorite films that I had fun with.
Also Avi Arad should leave because everything he touches *dies*, yes kinda like that funny scene in Fairly Oddparents.
Yep Avi Arad is awful 👎🏽
When people go Get Woke Go Broke, I pull up these receipts. Movies that aren't inclusive don't make money.
@@suzygirl1843
wow, you have one example for your argument, whereas there are a ton of examples for the other argument. very convincing. ;) and even the one example you have, doesn't really work. this movie had a diverse cast. more diverse than most of the other blockbusters, which made tons of money back then. so no, the numbers clearly don't support your flawed logic.
greetings from germany
@@moserfugger6363 Suzy done lost that argument. Sucks for her but it sucks more for the people who have to tolerate such silliness from these L.T.s. Too bad tolerance isn't in the liberal dictionary. Compromise is the key to the door of progress.
I want this and all awfully good movie reviews to go on for 3 hours.
This movie is actually much better and more enjoyable than majority of MCU movies. It knows what it wants to be and knows how to be entertaining
Is this a joke???
Somebody freaking get this Man a cameo as ghost Rider in Marvel AND finally Superman in DC goddamn.
It's about damn time!!! So glad you uploaded. You're reviews are my top 5 favorite things on yt and you introduced me to double toasted
Why is the audio mix on these videos always so bloody aweful?
Christopher Lambert was in Southland Tales in 2007. That played in US theaters so the trivia about him not being in a theatrical film from 2000 to 2012 is wrong.
Thanks for turning the volume down for the narration and then cranking it up for other parts , almost giving me a F'n heart attack
Came here to say the same thing. Sound mix was horrible on this vid
@@IamShawnMichaelAllen which is normally not the case
This movie reminds me of my aunt that passed away from cancer because she took me to watch this randomly the weekend it released . The movie sucked but I was happy to see it.
Great video! I always love your videos!
I love ghost rider spirit of Vengeance it’s one of my biggest guilty pleasures
💯
i don't even remember Elba was in the movie. the only things i remember: it was shot in Europe, Cage was saving a boy, the Devil was recast with Ciaran Hinds. none of the specific clips from the movie ring any bell 😅
15:00 to 15:06
See its references like this that are the reason I love this show so much.
You are so good at these videos bro
He Twinkie scene always cracks me up
Nicolas Cage is a true icon.
I remember seeing this in theaters in middle school with my parents and I wanted to leave the theater lmao as much as I hate this movie the design for Ghost Rider is so badass in this movie
I like both ghost Rider movies I hope we get a 3rd ghost Rider movie with Nicholas Cage man
Dude, the editing on this AGM episode... *chef's kiss*
I really liked this film. It's insane and weird and entertaining as all hell. And the style and production are top notch for a film like this. It's pretty great.
Yay! A new one again! And it’s Ghost Rider!
Did he just say... Cyber Monks? I'm in love with that visual!
I'm just saying, if Sony doesn't get rid of AVI ARAD
You can bet their cinematic universe isn't gonna last long
At least he’s still trying to make a Sinister Six movie.
If he does get to keep doing these turds for a few years longer, I'll at least have plenty of material for my show, so I'm conflicted.
@@JeonardShadby505 You will see my next Marvel movie and then Mr. Shade, I’ll brainwash you and your lil’ homies too. HAHAHA. (Avi Arad)
If you already saw “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” there’s a credit nod to Avi Arad at the end credits where it says: “The Filmmakers like to gratefully acknowledge the original true believer, Avi Arad, whose vision led the way to bringing these iconic characters to the screen.”
So you guys better respect him cause he’s old (73).
@@KadeemG61 I chuckled to myself when I saw that in the end credits, poor Marvel had to really kiss some ass to make NO WAY HOME happen, though I'm glad they did.
I think Lambert didn't need sword training because he's already skilled at sword
The unpopular opinion: 5 reasons why Sony loves Avi Arad and 5 reasons why fans despise Avi Arad.
#IBlameAviArad
There a few things, I like about (GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE) movie; One of them is when close to the end of the movie, Johnny Blaze develops the ability, to tap into the suppressed power of (The Angel of Justice) & use it to keep a boy from dying.
It shows in the movie when he tapped into that suppressed power, the color of GhostRider’s flames changes to the color blue.
Loved the green jelly in the background.
At it's time ghost rider was beloved by most people
"He's scraping at the door!"
SCRAPING AT THE DOOR!
Also. Might I add. The production quality of this channel is quickly rivaling network television
This script could've seriously used a Ghost Writer.
To be honest I actually liked both the Ghost Rider and the spirit of vengeance mostly because most of the time it knows not to take itself too seriously,sh** gets real and very terrifying as soon as the Ghost Rider comes out in both movies coz it blends terrifying, badass and cool very very well
Ghost Rider twisting in the air reminded me s music video called "Closer" from Nine inch nails rock band
I preferred the fights in this more than the first as it wasn't 5 second fights with barely any fear behind them. I also love how, at the start, the rider needs a minute to get its energy back after being locked away for a while by Johnny hence why he's so still and takes his time with the first guy and can't handle the attack compared to later on in the film.
This was the one and only movie I have ever walked out of. I walked out during morphing face motorcycle scene. This video about the movie was much better than the movie.
imagine casting THE Nic Cage as Ghost Rider and not even having him perform as the character in the first movie
So many actors that I love. A Comic Book character that I love. I even collected GR comics in the 90s. The Danny Ketch version.
Yet, this happens. smh.
This was just a fun film. People were way too hard on it.
An Awfully Good review of a Nicolas Cage movie as Ghost Rider? What deal with the devil did Jesse sign?
A lifetime deal we’ll never let him out of. Dammed to review awful movies for us until the end of time.
Nic Cage "career troubles"? I don't know, I think the Nic Cage that we've had for the last 5-8 years is probably absolute Peak Nic Cage. Mandy, Pig, Willy's Wonderland, Colour out of Space, and now Unbearable Weight.... Dude is on absolute fire.
Have you seen Prisoners of the Ghostland, by any chance? Recent Nic Cage-Film and it looks cool, so I considered checking it out.
I think it started being more consistent since 2018. He had an odd one now and again, but I'd say 2018 to now has been his resurgence. I think it's helped since it's been said he's paid off all his debts, so now he doesn't have to take just any job for that sake anymore. Now it's been for stuff he really has been passionate for consistently.
Bonus points for anyone knows where the voice-over @21:44 is from. I'll give you a hint. It's a Peter Jackson movie.
Despite having a very unusual and weird choreography of the movie, this movie was very cool
Nadya:Danny’s The One Good Thing I Ever Did
Man She’s A Very Dedicated Loving Mom
MAn these videos are so underrated wish they were more! Maybe there just not much awfully good movies there idk
Great editing with video & clips, but can you please Normalize the audio. I re-listen to them while in my car, and holy crap, your voice has lower levels, so I turn it up and BAM! NIC CAGE BLOWS OUT MY SPEAKERS!!!!
I really enjoy this movie I know it’s not the best but can we agree ghost rider has the coolest design in this movie
i`m blasting my speakers and I can barely hear you I thin k you need to update your microphone but at the same time keep up the good workd and GOd bless
I totally forgot Carradine went out like a legend.
But the first Ghost Rider was such a let down, i really don't even know why i gave Spirit of Vengance a chance, but i LOVED it since the first watch. It's like if Neveldine and Taylor watch the first one and said "we can do better than that pos" and they did! Lol their vision perfectly fits the Ghost Rider.
Also, i just realized Cage is wearing a double rider in the first one and a racer in the second one, idk how i never noticed, oh well lol
Great video, always a pleasure hearing Jesse "Throwing Some" Shade roasting the bad movies we all know we secretly love! And an instant thumbs-up for the Steven Seagal diss, because fuck that guy.
Just an FYI, the audio for this video is extremely quiet. But other than that, a good video as always.
I thought this was still better than the first one. Not saying much, but that’s what I think.
I don’t think Ghost Rider NEEDS to be a hard R, but it helps
imo this is a quality video that's ruined by audio mixing which is all over the place - the difference in level between the voice over and the clips is wild
Should we mention that, I believe Brian Taylor or nevaldine did a tv show. Called Happy!
I saw that on Taylor’s IMDb, it was only him who made it though. Looks like it would've been up my alley, I love most things that are associated with Patton Oswalt.
It was definitely an interesting show.
Your audio needs to be fixed. The narrator sounds really low and then you get this vid clips that are super loud! please fix this!
Makes the first seem like a masterpiece
Wait combine Nicolas Cage and Johnny Blaze and…. OMG ITS MORTAL KOMBAT
A detailed retrospective of "GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE" (2011) sheds light on the sequel's pitfalls and missed opportunities, juxtaposed against its predecessor to analyze what could have propelled the franchise forward. Despite Nicolas Cage's reprisal of Johnny Blaze and Neveldine/Taylor's dynamic direction, the film struggled to captivate audiences and critics, attributed mainly to budget constraints, an ill-suited PG-13 rating, and perhaps a creative vision that didn't resonate with the character's darker aspects.
**Good Aspects of Both Films:**
- **Original "Ghost Rider" (2007):** The first film found commercial success and effectively captured the Ghost Rider's dark, supernatural essence. Its visual effects, particularly the flaming skull and bike, along with Cage's compelling performance, were visually striking.
- **"Spirit of Vengeance":** Aimed to reinvigorate the franchise with Neveldine/Taylor's electrifying directorial style. Although its potential was not fully realized, the intent to inject fresh energy into the Ghost Rider saga was evident.
**Areas for Improvement and Integration:**
- **Narrative Depth:** Both films lacked substantial narrative depth. Integrating social commentary and exploring the human condition could have added layers of complexity, making the Ghost Rider's struggle more relatable.
- **R-Rating:** Adopting an R-rating could have allowed for a more authentic depiction of the Ghost Rider universe, unshackling filmmakers to explore its darker, more violent elements freely.
- **Adherence to Source Material with Innovation:** Maintaining fidelity to the comic books while innovatively adapting screen-unfriendly elements could have yielded a more cohesive and compelling cinematic experience. Recognizing and innovating upon what worked in the comics could have fortified the films' connection to their origins and audience expectations.
**Potential for a Third Film:**
The prospect of a third "Ghost Rider" film presents an opportunity to amalgamate the first two installments' strengths and lessons. A blend of visual spectacle and unrestrained storytelling, particularly under an R-rating, could authentically capture the Ghost Rider saga's raw intensity and moral complexity. Enriching the narrative with thoughtful social commentary and a creative yet faithful adaptation of the comics could deeply engage audiences, offering entertainment and intellectual stimulation.
Both "Ghost Rider" films, despite their challenges, showcased the franchise's latent potential. A balanced approach that honors the source material's strengths, paired with bold storytelling and a dive into darker thematic territories, could significantly uplift the franchise's quality and impact in a third installment.
Abrahulk Lincoln sound like an awesome idea for a new character. Lol.
Best JoBlo video ever!
We bringin da noise! Separate men from da boys!. I always think of the Steven seagal video with that song
say what you will about this film, but the design of the Ghost Rider should've been the design from the start. the chared skull and bubbling tar jacket looked great. this Ghost Rider look deserved to be in a better film.
Prior to this release Nicholas was riding the gravy train on biscuit wheels.
Great video. Except that your audio was much too low.
General public didn’t like this movie, personally I liked it, and the prequel, I think people just have it for Nicholas Cage, I love his movies, he was great in Drive Angry
I’m the opposite to you. I thought the first Ghost Rider was the best and it’s what I’m modeling a story off of in a sense. The other to me was just too much, but this is all off personal preference.
I would rather rewatch the first Ghost Rider film on repeat than ever rewatching this crap.
it's much better directed and the movie got better with time.
@@dericjames2018 But the editing (on par with the Taken sequels) made me sick as I've got motion sickness, it had plot points that didn't make any sense and I found Nic Cage's overacting in this film embarrassing.
Directors like this really piss me off! Do they really think any of what they film actually looks good? If they can’t see the bad performances, cheesy scenes, and overall look and feel of their movies…. they shouldn’t be wasting everyones time and money in the first place!
Dude love this movie
Danny:Hey What If You Have To Pee While You’re On Fire?
21:34 those hitler memes never cease to amuse me xDD
I like the ghost rider movies. Much better than recent MCU trash. Especially the first one
Marvel should make a R rated Ghostrider movie.
Did you record this V/O from across the room? The audio quality from scene insert to your voice over is terrible. Check your quality before uploading... It's not hard to normalize the volume between cuts.
I don't need to struggle to hear your voice, then get my ears blasted by inserts.
Yeah ☠️ this movie 🎬 is a little bit action cheese..but I love it 😀 way better than the first one! When I was a kid I loved reading 📚 the comic, sometimes you just have to be happy with what you got!!
I cringed through-out ALL of this. I'm sorry you went through this movie.
21:37 I take it back, this is the best movie ever.
5:30 , 11:08
^ Nah but fr tho, why is the first Ghost Rider film different from the sequel🤦🏻
Calypso, is that you?
considered a thing? Jerrys a god damn Judge NOW!!
Don't deny the omnipotence and omnipresence that is Steven Seagal.
You need to turn up your volume on your mixing level.
Can barely hear you.
just want to comment before i watch this one - i loved the first Ghost Rider, be gentle on this one haha
Jesse, you're cool
XD I think nicolas cage is one of those actors that could totally pull it off and play every avengers character... true that it could end up being a big effin mess... but watching captain america nic and iron man nic screaming at each other (I mean like full nic unhinged) while banner nic complains that hulk nic is "scratching at the DOOR!!!" that would be totally worth it for me
Ghost rider a guilty pleasure for me as well, but i'm a HUGE CAGE fan, and these two movies couldn't be enough...it made ethe nes feeds today that Cage would do another Ghost rider if the material was suited for him..and they paid him enough...but for now.. NAW!
I knew Jerry Springer was a demon
Why tf does no one comment on the f'ing audio getting lower and lower!!??
Cage was a man possessed in this film
Maybe not possessed per se. But coccaine perhaps? Lol. Jks. I have no idea. Would make sense tho. Lol.
@@philipsmi-lenguyen8155 then let's say possession..... of banned substance.
@@richardlegrand4697 lol. That's a much better n smarter way of puttin it. Hehe. Thanks.
Yeah,sounds about rite bruh...
AVI ARAD ruined everything again
And now he's gonna ruin both BORDERLANDS and KRAVEN THE HUNTER
The same way he ruined TASM2 and UNCHARTED
From what I hear, he’s part of the reason Spider Man 3 wasn’t very good. It’s definitely decent, imo but still..
Fuck, I didn't know he was doing Borderlands. Aww fuck, and I thought the Cate Blanchett picture looked badass.
Can you do the one
