    Honestly as a sequel to the '66 movie and series, this works pretty well. The vivid colors, the dutch angles, celebrity villain casting and overall cheesy tone. I think this movie accomplished what it was going for, the problem is that it wasn't what audiences were wanting.

    I was 5 when this movie came out. My dad took me late at night to see it one night. The fact that he took me out late to see a movie already made the experience awesome, I loved the movie haha. RIP dad, I love you. I haven't seen it since, but it is definitely interesting as an adult to see the differences in a Batman film directed by a very flamboyant gay man. He loved the batnipples, there isn't a single other Batman director that I could imagine even thinking of something like that hahaha. I need to watch it again, it still looks cooler than people give it credit for. The use of color and lighting was great. Also, RIP Joel.

      The fans have spoken. We want comics to get with the times. Cis white males have always had the lead roles. It's time for a real version of Wolverine like the comics have it drawn and written... a female version or at least a Trans version. Rumor has it Elliot Page is playing a live action Wolverine and it is going to be amazing. DC is bringing Tim Drake Robin to the big screen. Rumor there is also Elliot Page playing Robin and finally we will see what DC fans like myself have wanted to see, a Batman and Robin romantic relationship as it has always been hinted in the comics and even back with Adam West. What's so wrong with that?

    • @SupermanKalL
      @SupermanKalL 2 роки тому +2

      It was the studio execs at Warner Brothers (who also owns DC Comics, the publishers of Batman comic books), that demanded that the Batman film series become lighter and more family friendly in tone, to be more mainstream, now opposed to director Tim Burton's dark and serious approach, which was even more so with the second film in 1992's Batman Returns, as parents criticized its PG-13 rating due to the darker tone and violence, while at the same time trying to promote McDonald's happy meals and toys to kids, which McDonald's dropped the whole happy meal campaign altogether upon parents' backlash. This made Warner execs to change up the direction of the Batman film series with Burton later departing (he stayed on as producer only for Batman Forever) and Joel Schumacher taking over as director with the next two films, Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. Michael Keaton turned down a huge paycheck to play the character again and was not fond with the direction that Schumacher was going with, and decided to leave after a few meetings with Schumacher. We know what became of the rest of the former Batman film series, it slowly went downhill, with the changes shown in Batman Forever (which has its good and bad moments, but its at least still good to watch), but it got much worse with how Batman and Robin ended up being, pure silly camp, going back to the 1960s Batman TV series (or even worse maybe). When the original 1989 film by Burton went back to the character's dark and serious era, finally shedding off the 1960s Batman TV show's camp vibe as well to the fans and general audience, and like how the comic books had done since the 1970s onward, Batman & Robin brought back the bad history of the character's camp era again which killed that Batman film series completely. Schumacher has accepted the blame over these many years and has apologized about B&R ended up being, but blame must go to the bosses at Warner Brothers for interfering in the first place.

      I truly can't see how B&R is a "so bad it's good" movie. It's clear they had this cheesy, campy vision from the beginning and they stuck with it.
      This universe is crazy, but everything is glued together by a good set and costume design. When you think about it, the bat-nipples are actually SO cohesive with the kitsch Gotham city with huge greek statues everywhere.
      And I think this movie have way more of a vision, good FX, soundtrack and good themes than half of the MCU's "good" movies. It feels as honest and personal as it could be under all WB's crazy direction, Joel did a great job and the movie still has a heart - which is more than I can say about nearly all the super flicks released in the last ten years or so.

    The diamond thing is actually clever.
    Diamonds are nicknamed “ice” by gangsters because an easy way to tell if a diamond is fake is by touching it to your lip. If it’s cold, it could be a diamond due to its high heat conductivity. Putting a diamond to your lip feels a lot colder than a cubic zirconia.
    It’s like how rocks always feel cold to the touch. It absorbs your heat. Hence “ice”. They needed to give a criminal something criminal to do so diamonds was actually pretty clever.
    (Obviously there are smarter ways to tell it’s a fake, but they’re gangsters so..)

  • @akirasuzami9847
    @akirasuzami9847 2 роки тому +2

    I am okay with the campy tone, but there are several problems with the movie.
    1. Tonal issues between being an homage to the 60s show and being a continuation of the 90s series. Mr. Freeze’s backstory about his wife’s disease conflicts with his portrayal being like the 60s Mr. Freeze. The campy parts conflict with the Alfred plot.
    2. George Clooney is a bad Batman. He doesn’t act any different when he’s Bruce Wayne and Batman. Adam West did have a slight performance change between the two roles, even though it wasn’t as much as Michael Keaton or Val Kilmer.
    3. Robin is annoying. He’s more annoying than in Batman Forever, where he was more tolerable and had an arc that this movie threw away.
    4. The fight scenes are bad and wirework is very obvious.

    Joel Shumacher got far more hate for this movie than he rightfully deserved. As a homage to the Adam West series in the style of Rocky Horror camp this movie would've worked perfectly as a stand alone film. Problem was WB and Shumacher misread their audience established by the original Burton films. They weren't the older adults who grew up with the 60's series, but were the younger generation that was introduced to Frank Miller's darker and more grounded graphic novels. But they wanted to sell their Happy Meal toys and decided to make the drastic tonal shift. It should've been treated as an offshoot, like the Lego Batman movies, and not a continuation of the main franchise.

Pierce Brosnan’s 13 year old boy one liners in every PG-13 movie. It got really stupid really fast. I was so relieved when Daniel Craig showed up in 2006 and Batman got back on track the year before. So you look at it as 150m lost and not 150m made. They stopped making movies witch is 0$ vs 700m they would have made vs only 225m they made 10 years later.

It creates a totally different atmosphere. That was one of the great things about Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy as well. The practical effects were incredible. I'd rather watch a shitty movie with practical effects than a decent movie with a shit ton of CGI.

    Considering that the director is a flamboyant homosexual, it makes sense to me why the movie turned out the way it did. Sure it's super silly, but it's completely marketed and made for children, so you can't say that it missed the mark; countless movies made these days can't even do that, studios insist on interfering and just end up crapping out unfocused turds like Batman v Superman. So props to Schumacher for sticking to his guns and delivering consistency.

    Unfortunately WB has not learned a damn thing from this massive bomb because decades later they would make several maligned movies that are too dependent on what came before or trying way too hard to be progressive and hip for the new generation, the studio executive and Joss Whedon interfered cut of Justice League, Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey and the one that REALLY got under my skin right next to Justice League (2017)…. Wonder Woman 1984. That film was acting like Batman and Robin 2.5, and had a lot of cliches like in that train wreck especially the infamous MacGuffin of the wishing stone… that film really disappointed me and it felt on par with this movie and Superman III.

    Okay. I don't hate Batman and Robin. I loved and still love Batman Forever. Batman Forever was great. I really liked what Joel Schumacher did with Batman Forever. Although Batman Forever was more like a comic book and Jim Carrey providing comic relief as The Riddler, it was still a very dark movie due to Bruce Wayne's PTSD and being haunted by his parent's murder. Two-Face murdering Dick Greyson's family and Dick Grayson desiring revenge on Two-Face. Batman and Robin was good, but it wasn't great and I don't think it was as good as Batman Forever. I think the problem with Batman and Robin is that they really carried away with it and it was done too much like the 1960s TV series starring Adam West and it lacked the darker aspects and elements of the mythology of Batman. Batman and Robin felt more like a comedy and it didn't take itself too seriously and it was more kid friendly. George Clooney was miscast as Batman/Bruce Wayne and he was a terrible choice. Chris O'Donnell was good again as Robin/Dick Grayson. Arnold Schwarzenegger was great as Mr. Freeze. But, it would had been good if Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze was more darker and sinister like The Terminator and Schwarzenegger's Mr. Freeze was more a anti-villain and a sympathetic character. Alicia Silverstone did a good job playing Barbara Wilson/Batgirl. However, it didn't make sense that she was Alfred's niece and she should had a British accent. But, they should had kept Batgirl as Commissioner Gordon's daughter. Uma Thurman did the best she could as Poison Ivy and with what she had to work with and she was sexy as Poison Ivy. The movie had some good action and some good CGI for it's time and I liked the end credits song "The End is the Beginning is the End" by The Smashing Pumpkins. It seems to me, Batman and Robin was a rushed production like Series 8 of Game of Thrones and it came out too soon after Batman and Forever and Warner Bros. should had left Batman and Robin for 3 - 4 years. There was things that could had been done with Batman and Robin. The franchise getting rebooted as Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy was a blessing and The Dark Knight was a massive blockbuster hit earning the late Heath Ledger an Oscar for his brilliant performance as The Joker. The 2nd reboot Batman VS. Superman: Dawn of Justice was pure shit and Justice League was no better. The upcoming 3rd Batman reboot - The Batman starring Twilight's Robert Pattinson looks really good and I think it could be the best Batman movie since The Dark Knight and hopefully better than Batman VS. Superman. I am beginning to think Batman and Robin was better than Batman VS. Superman. Batman and Robin wasn't a perfect film. But it's still entertaining despite it's problems and flaws and love it or hate it, Batman and Robin is a good movie and it's a film I come back to every now and then.

    While it’s certain that Schumacher fully embraced 60’s Batman for Batman & Robin, I am not sure he did for Batman Forever. Yes, Carrey’s Riddler was very cartoony, but there is a notable shift between the two movies.
    The most obvious is the presentation: while the both movies are colorful Batman Forever, between giant statues and and glowing paint, tries to pass as a real place in each scene. It is an hyper exaggerated version of reality but one that clearly was done with inspiration from the Batman and, specially, Batman Returns. It looked as if they were trying to maintain some continuity with the previous films but making everything, from the lighting to details in the scene, more colorful to separate itself from the more monochromatic Batman Returns. Sets are big and small, but there is always a sense that they belong to city, wherever it may exist.
    On the other hand the sets in Batman & Robin play all the time like a stage play and something you’d on a “Batman on Ice” show. Most sets are wide open, sparse in detail as if they didn’t know what to put in there or they were making a one-size-fits-all set for multiple actions, leaving enough room for the “skaters” ( the performers) to move around (instead of configuring the set to the shot). Stage lighting rigs are visible throughout in ceilings, as you would in a theater or stadium, there is a lot of low level fog used, common in plays too, and performers move much more constricted (but exaggerated) as they would on a stage. Even the ice and snow look as a cheap plastic prop of lesser quality you’d use on a play as opposed as a multi-million dollar film. Oh- and the lighting is super bright in every scene compared to Forever which still featured more contrast in most scenes and a play on brights and darks more in line with Batman Returns. Again, looking like a stage play.
    And then we have the performances: take the color out of Batman Forever and it is not that disimilar from the first Batman. Kilmer plays it seriously but with some lighthearted undertones not unlike Keaton (even as the latter is better at the few comedic moments), while Kidman finds a tone similar to Basinger’s. And while a tad more exaggerated, Carrey and Jones play their parts not that different than Nicholson. These actors are ‘living’ in this world and there are no cameras around. It is a less violent and dark film than the Burton movies, due to WB wanting to aim the film to a younger audience, but the characters feel and sound natural for that world.
    Batman & Robin, on the other hand, features performances that are detached from any semblance of a ‘grounded world’ and more into the realm of characters who know they are not really living in it. Everyone over enunciates, over articulates, over express and emotes, over gestures, and overacts, common in stage plays so that everyone in the audience, including the people in the back, can hear and see what’s going on. Of course with the camera up close this doesn’t work the same as on an actual play, which results in the campiness and bad acting we see in the result. Everyone is terrible in it- from Clooney phoning it in, to Arnold trying to speak, and Thurman not knowing if she has to be a femme fatale or a comic relief.
    In hindsight, even though both films have problems, Schumacher seems to have tried two different things: making a ‘kid friendly’ version and continuation of Burton’s vision in Batman Forever, and going all out on a 60’s Batman show, fourth wall breaking movie in Batman & Robin.
