  • Thanks to LeeJ for providing a first gen transfer of this show with some really good quality.
    As with all videos, this will look and sound better AFTER premiere mode has ended.
    I had some errors in the process of getting this to where i wanted it, so this will be done over again in the near future (hence the preview tag in the title)
    Based on the provided tape, I do expect a pretty decent jump in quality from this to the next time I publish it (and will contain the entire segment, not just part 1)
    I will also go over the audio. the levels seemed low when i was spot-checking. This tape is in wonderful shape compared to the other sources I've seen, so it should look pretty good either way

      Looks like a good time for sure, and Fogerty's vocals are killer. Though, as a much bigger fan of the Dead, it was kinda lame by their standards. As far as I could see, it was only Jerry and Bob. And it was obvious they were only backing musicians for this gig. I'm sure most of the fans there wanted to hear John play the 'Bayou' solo just how it sounds on the record. Not sure if the Dead shared the bill for this show, but Jerry and Bob were kept on a short leash for this set. And I'm sure they were more than happy to do it. Sure looks that way anyhow, and I can't imagine them not being super cool about it. I'm just imagining a conversation between John, Jerry, and Bob, after agreeing to do this, where John is like "cool, but just so we're on the same page... we're gonna play the songs straight ahead, and i'll play the solos", etc... and Jerry and Bob are just like "cool man" (which is the same reaction I imagine they woulda had if John had told them they were going to improvise the whole set from scratch, or if he told them he was the Zodiac killer and they were next... just going with the flow)... At the end of the day, a gig's a gig. And providing rhythm guitar and backing vocals on CCR/Fogerty tunes would be easy money for any professional musician. So it must have felt like a paid vacation for Jerry and Bob, whose typical experience performing live was like a tight rope walk between sky scrapers by comparison. Which is not to put down John or the traditional concertgoing experience. He sounded great and gave the audience exactly what they wanted (not to mention, he had more of an impact on contemporary music and culture in a few short years with CCR, than most musicians have in a lifetime)... But, there's certainly a difference between playing a show (same set, in the same order, every night) where every song is more or less a short, simple strummer... and then playing an entirely different set from night to night, where it's common to not even know what note you'll play next (let alone what song), sometimes with nothing to lean on except your ears and intuition, feeling around in the dark, in a collective attempt to pull a rabbit out of their ass and get everyone off before the night's over...

    So, I haven’t seen anybody here mention that Jerry played on Tom Fogerty’s solo album. Also no mention of the fact that John’s brother Tom eventually died of AIDS which this event was a fund raiser for. According to wiki Tom died in 1990. He would have been alive for this performance, no doubt on the performer’s minds.

    Wasn't there but did watch live on bay area TV. Think the story was Jerry or Bob or both asked John Fogarty to be on a bill and he said I don't have a band and they said we'll be your band. Steve Jordan brings it, Jerry lovin it. Creedence forever a joyful moment in time, the sound of their hits on little transistor radios and car radios and 45's was everywhere.

    Thanks for posting this. I've long loved the music of Creedence and the Grateful Dead. It's neat to hear them together even though Jerry is almost inaudible in the mix. I don't really understand Fogerty's love/hate relationship with Jerry and the Dead. He sure does bad-mouth them a lot. I think it goes all the way back to the early days when critics raved about the bands from the Haight like the Airplane and the Dead, and were rather dismissive of Creedence. They were mostly viewed as a singles act. That and the fact that he prefers tight arrangements with no room to wander which is the polar opposite of the Dead. If you want to hear Garcia ripping on some Creedence, check out Jerry and Los Lobos doing Born on the Bayou. It's pretty entertaining.

    • @tonym994
      @tonym994 2 роки тому

      I will do that. Los Lobos did the song 'Bertha' on 'DEADICATED' ,a Dead tribute album. Fogerty never tires of telling about having to follow them at Woodstock. but it's hilarious.

    • @tonym994
      @tonym994 2 роки тому

      I wished Jerry was more audible ,too. he can be heard doing that little lead part on 'Proud Mary'. and he's not just moping around. he's contributing. we all know he's the best guitarist on stage. and I'm a Creedence fan. but the Dead's skull & roses LP had the same kind of folk blues, country ,R&R, that CCR did. love that record .'Goin' down the road feelin' bad', for instance. an old American folk song. that and 'American Beauty,' are gems.

      He is louder in the mix on the next audio source Chris will be using, and he does take a solo during Rock and Roll Girls that you can hear much better on that source.

    This isn't Fogerty with the Grateful Dead; this is Fogerty with Weir & Garcia from the Dead, with a couple other musicians. You will be severely reprimanded for this mistake !!

    people don’t know it, but Jerry Garcia would’ve never been able to do this gig without David Letterman. Here’s proof!

    this time....I dont know why, John Fogerty perform very good but the guitar tone sounds very bad.....not like he did in thie era and his CCR era

      check out 11 3 1991 on my page ... he does a few songs in that set as well. jerry has zero effects so he tries to stay in the background.
