Nice video Mark, I use the flask method myself (the wife used to complain about the smell of boiling hemp lol) because it's quick and clean. I always leave a bit of room for expansion as I have cracked a flask before. Thoroughly agree with you about feeding quantities of hemp, I've made that mistake in my younger days and have witnessed barbel in shallow water become so pre occupied that they won't even look at your bait until all of the hemp has gone a lot of other anglers wouldn't know about this preparation method so a good education video. Top stuff. Regards Andy
cheers andy, yes we've experienced the same thing and both found the same answer, no smell, it's quick and no pan cleaning afterwards👍 carpers are by far the worst when it comes to hemp, you definitely don't need enough to warrant using a burco...lol👍😉😄
My dad got that very flask in a well known supermarket for a steal the other week. Not sure if he will be happy come wintertime when his tea tastes a bit strange 🙈🤣 Another great vid , Mark 👍
cheers kyle, my advice is get back to the supermarket and grab another one mate, I have two flasks myself, one for my drinks when i'm fishing and the other for my hemp, that way my tea doesn't taste funny on the bank👍🤣🤣🤣
black gold indeed ash, there aren't many baits as effective as hemp, you only get 3 pints from a big flask but it's enough for an overnighter or a day session, specially if you add pellets, corn and chopped boilies etc, before you know it your mix is a bucket full👍
Have you ever tried it with any flavourings, I know salt can inhibit the hempseed splitting so maybe add that after if you wanted, but could add chilli flake and/or cloves to mix up the hemp a little 🎣
@@pdcnugz9462 chilli is a good one mate, I haven't done 'chilli hemp' yet but the two make a great combination. Hemp/maize, hemp/tigers hemp/sweetcorn and hemp/groats are also great combinations, I tend to favour mixing with a another bait👍
yes it's a really clean method david, you can soak for a few hours first if you want but it's not necessary, just lose the cold water when you put the hemp in the flask, there's only room in there for the boiling water👍
@@klefroid the hemp in this video wasn't the best mate, I actually did most of the sack the old fashioned way, soaked for 24hrs and boiled for at least 20 mins, in fact I boiled the arse out of it for an hour on a few occasions and added bicarbonate of soda and the split rate was the same as in the flask. despite the poor split rate using both methods, I still caught well fishing over it. One tip I have for tough-to-split hemp, chuck a portion of it in a blender and turn it into crushed hemp👍
Used this method for years I add a teaspoon of bicarb shake and release the air out, next morning all it takes is to flush out the flask and the smell has gone lol coffee tastes normal
i bought a new flask and kept the old one for doing my bait ant, even cleaned out i wasn't comfortable using the flask i prepared bait in for my drinks👍😁
hi kezza, yes i think you can, cool box or flask, you're putting boiling water on the bait and locking it down to keep the heat in. i've never done pigeon conditioner in a flask but i have done hemp and wheat and they both came out well so i don't see a problem as the methods are so similar, you just won't get and more than 3 pints from a flask👍
Good tip which I've now bought a flask specifically for, had to buy some uncooked hemp from a local tackle shop £11 for 4kg 😬 but needed it then and there for the next day. Spent ages pissing around with pans etc but not anymore! The quality was bad as well all bits of twig etc in it! On a side note the uncooked prices of hemp from places seem to be higher than the fresh frozen stuff you can get which is already cooked. I find that odd.
that's what i've done luke, i wouldn't want to drink out of a flask i use for particles. i don't think some of these companies make much on prepped particles, they get bulk/trade deals which enable them to keep the price down but i think they make more on other baits and small items they sell, the cheap particles are just to win the custom/orders👍
@@MarkCarp a lot of places seem to be doing 20kg for 20 quid or such delivered to your door, can't really complain at that but doesn't get fresher than cooling your own the day night before! Cheers.
@@carpermanluke876 i've not seen it that cheap but then again i get mine from local livery and don't pay much attention to the bait wars, it's coming virtually straight from the merchant so it's always fresh, when it comes to bait companies you don't know what you're getting half the time. Cheers luke and good luck mate👍
hi mark good vid, i dont get hemp anymore as it costs alot now adays, i live in preston near leyland and use to get the same hemp from bamfords, but i did find sometimes the quality was really bad, most of the time ,when getting the smaller bags from them, i then tryed some from the petshop in preston, as a match friend gets it there, and it was alot better, but my finding might not be the norma, just iffy batches, i also use to put something in the water ,i think it was bicarb soda or something i forgot now, but it made it darker and split more, but like i said ,i dont use it now , i still have 17 killo of dry maize,to use first lol
quality always seems to vary lazy, I always have a good look at mine when I open a new sack, not just for hemp but for everything else as well, it is bicarbonate soda that you add and it does darken it and make it split easier, I never bother with it myself, hemp will usually split on its own anyway but again that varies from batch to batch and how long you cook it for😉 when I picked this sack of hemp up I couldn't resist another sack of maize that was sitting on the next pallet, again it's bamfords, it's gone up to £8.75 a sack which is still a snip for 20k of bait, so I've got plenty of that too👍😉😄
yeah the maize is cheap lazy, the hemp was £30 but for a 15k sack, I don't mind it being 5k light if I'm honest, I probably wouldn't get through the bigger sack this year anyway👍
depends what you want to use it for Robert?, for carp i'd never bind it with anything, just put it in a spomb or one of the other new spods that open on impact with the lake😉 i'd bind it for barbel fishing because you want to get it down on the bottom in the flow, for this I use dynamite marine halibut groundbait if i'm feeder fishing or i'll put it loose in a bait-dropper if I can👍
i'm not sure about the cats but it will definitely work for carp mate👍 what it will do is work for the smaller species that cats predate on, attract the bait fish, attract the cats if that makes sense?👍 I've never heard of sorghum grain so I can't really comment on that one, I can tell you wheat is very good for carp too👍
@@MarkCarp Channel cats may love it.I catch a lot of them on strawberry dough bait they love "" hominy corn " .You may want to try it .just corn that is soked in water and lye over night .it disolves that coating on corn then it swells up like popcorn
i found like you i didnt get enough that had split. Probably too much hemp to water. The boiling water would cool too much if too much hemp. This is where the soaking in cold water overnight might help before using flask.

there's not a lot in mine steve, once you've put the boiling water in give it 10 minutes then take the lid off and add some more, you'll see it will have soaked into the hemp, you can actually top it up more than once if you want too, this will ensure more 'oil' or hemp water as I call it. even doing a secondary top up there still won't be a lot, once it's finished and gone back into the bucket just add more boiling water to cover it👍
that is correct john, it cooks in the flask overnight and should be split by the next day, there's a lot of poor quality hemp around at the moment that won't split, if you get a bad lot you might need to boil it for 20 mins as well but good quality hemp should split in the flask👍
