FEEDING My New CARNIVOROUS PLANTS | Venus Fly Traps and Pitcher Plants

- It's a carnivorous plant paradise! Today I take you through a tour of "Carnivora", my new gorgeous venus fly trap and pitcher plant terrarium setup. As a kid, I used to think caring for carnivorous plants was difficult, but thanks to research and articles online, I've discovered what I as well as many new carnivorous plant owners may be doing wrong, and that caring for these unique insectivorous plant pets is actually quite easy once you know the basics! Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution. #VenusFlyTraps #PitcherPlants #CarnivorousPlants

Hi,
The tank is beautiful, but you’re going to run into problems with this system. Here is some information that I hope will help. (I’ve been raising many different carnivorous plants for more than 30 years.)
First, you would do well to get a copy of “The Savage Garden” by Peter D’Amato. It’s probably the single best book on all the genera and cultural groups of carnivorous plants. You can also get it for Kindle.
Your plants you had as a kid were almost certainly dead. (Don’t feel bad, I killed all of mine too!) :-) Why? First, Dionaea and Sarracenia need more light than it’s possible to give in the house without artificial lighting. (It’s hard in the video to see how much light your plants are getting: in nature they grow where they get full sun, all day.
Also, they absolutely suffered from the lack of correct dormancy. Simply decreasing light for dormancy is not enough. They also need cool temperatures; around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. If Sarracenias don’t get their cold dormancy, they’ll just stop growing until they get it. You can skip dormancy once for them but after that, they need to be refrigerated for a few months. Then they will start growing, bloom and produce new pitchers. Giving them four hours of light a day without the cool temperatures is a death sentence. (Flytraps reportedly can grow through the year if you give them enough light; I actually haven’t tried it.)
The misting is cool, but unnecessary and may very well keep things too wet and lead to fungus or rot. The air in your part of the world is plenty humid!
You can’t kill a carnivorous plant by “overfeeding,” at least not with insects. Pitcher plants in the wild will often catch so many bugs that parts of their leaves will eventually rot, but it’s not a big deal. They’ll just produce bigger traps. During the summer my flytraps rarely have an empty leaf! It just gives them more energy to produce more.
The reason flytraps need live insects is because the insects’ movement further stimulates the trigger hairs, which leads to the narrowing and digestion phase. This helps them avoid expending energy on escaped insects, or traps that were triggered. But it’s true that you shouldn’t tease the traps, because they actually have to grow back open. In addition to expending energy, each trap only works about three times. After that, its growth is done and it’s just a leaf.
And just a side note - your Sarracenia is a hybrid, not purpurea, although there is definitely purpurea in its parentage.
I hope this is helpful!
It seems to me they might do well here in New Mexico.
Azrily Rhul Lots of people in the Southwest are raising carnivores! The International Carnivorous Plant Society has lots of info, and they have a FB forum as well.
I'm also a bit wary of the moss in there. It looks very nice, but over time it may choke out the others...
Dovah Creations Yeah though it’s pretty easy to pull that out if you get too much. I have to pull it out of my Pinguiculas every 6-8 months.
Where is the information?
the other roach is just chilling in the background while his friend is being brutally digested alive
And thus the dancing roach came into existence
I love that your videos aren’t click bait and describe exactly what the video is about. Thanks for teaching us about your hobbies!
Ah, I see you’ve registered Carnivine and Victreebel in your Pokédex!
Victreebel = kool-aid man
Carnivine-its just a murderer of insects because it's walks and runs.
He owns millions of Durants who die by Carnivine and Victrebell
Silver Eevee yes! Yes! Yes! My thoughts exactly
Do you think carnivine would eat and like caterpie or wurmple or like any bug type that would get near it...
Hey AC! I just want to thank you for making ant videos! 2 years ago, your videos and formicariums were what brought me into this amazing hobby and gave homes to over 10 colonies! Now, your videos has even inspired me to share my own ant colonies on UA-cam. After learning how hard it is to create just a 5 minute video, I respect you even more for your work. Without you, such an important part of my life would never have been discovered.
🤩

Romeo and Juliet the flytraps.
Plants aren't sentient so they would never be aware of anything going around on a conscious level. Now imagine being the roach digested alive that's got to hurt.....

"Life sometimes needs a break, so it can come back strong, and more vibrant, than ever before" -AntsCanada 2k19
OOF💔
"Life sometimes needs a break, so it can come back strong & more vibrant than ever before." incredible you made a metaphor for new beginnings before the year 2020 started & so many people would be forced to quarantine & life went dormant for many. I can only hope that this year of 2022, the world is stronger and more vibrant than ever before. Happy new year y'all.
I'm really glad you mentioned the effect of forcing the fly traps closed. My uncle keeps a lot of plants, Venus Fly Traps among them. And I remember tickling one of the hairs to see it closed, and he was able to school me that it was actually more detrimental than it would seem. How much more energy it takes, and how difficult it is for the plants to recover from it. Made me feel quite bad, and was grateful for the lesson.
Yeah, I'm also guilty of that and had no idea. Thanks for watching!

Oh wow! I got a carnivorous plant maybe half a year ago and it flowered twice at one time! It ended up dying shortly after it was done flowering.. Which my friend had told me they typically do after they flower since that happened to hers. The guy I bought them from was very nice and knowledgeable, he grew them personally. He said that wasn't true and I relayed that good news to my friend. Which... Actually started a mini fight because she thought I accused her of lying... Which I didn't.. She's kind of sensitive like that so I always have to watch my words. After some more advice from the guy as well as a Reddit group I joined, I am happy to say Dewey is back with more dew than ever! And he's flowering again!! (This time a single one. But tbh he only flowered like 6 months ago... Not sure how frequently this needs to be done.)
