- My new fire ant colony, now officially named the Phoenix Empire, is super cute and growing steadily, but what they really want and need at this stage is protein. @@AntsCanada Just a thought here, when you feed larger pray, you might want to have put in a vent of some type, multiple screens, of course, to let out the gasses associated with decay. It's in reference to your comments in past videos about the smell being unbearable. Thinking a controlled opening, sheltered from the weather, perhaps with a fan to bring the air outside, like an attic fan, perhaps. Remote switch, outside the Ant Room, could be set up also. /just a thought.

I love how you set this up man. The empire with the ants and giving the viewers power over names and what not. I love it. I wish you were around when I was a child I would have gotten sucked into this for hours . And the fact that your educating people about them will make people less likely to smash them or ruin their colonies outside in the world . You're awesome man. This makes me curious as to how the Nanitics would be in the wild since they'd have to hunt for food. Then again they might just start foraging until they're big enough in numbers to actually hunt...or scavenge at first perhaps.

@@AntsCanada Yea the colony as a whole will be less aggressive and take much less risks when the colony is small, and the death of one worker is still a big deal
I bet that the Queen's 'milk' has enzymes and hormones that keep the brood she directly cares for timid and fearful so they only go after easy food that doesn't involve conflict. I would expect to see the new batch of brood cared for by nanny ants to be aggressive in the face of prey.

i grew up petrified of insects. if i saw a bee id either freeze and tense or panic and turn/run away. same with spiders and other insects. ants have always been.. okay? i cant handle the thought of one crawling on my skin, but i do marvel in seeing the systems presented by insects. its always interesting to learn of something new.
so although i will never fully love ants, i 100% am cheering these dudes on!

Aren't they awesome! This is actually my first time seeing fire ant larvae this close (with 4K camera) and I was surprised to see how detailed they actually are. They've got a head and a mouth with jaws and swallowing parts, even hair! I've also never before seen fire ant meconia until creating this video! Thanks for watching! Ant love forever!

Yes, you basically catch a wandering queen, preferably with no wings, on the ground during nuptial flight season (chances are she's mated), and place her into a test tube setup. There she will lay eggs and start her own colony. It's a pretty awesome process!

Because while sugars are great for the adult workers and their body needs the queen and larvae require it to replace materials lost when the queen creates the eggs, and for the larvae to grow and develop their new bodies.
