What does this have to do with anti-vax? Also, I’m a nurse and almost no nurse I know is anti-vax. A very few refused the new COVID vaccine initially when it was mandated for healthcare workers and quit, or were fired. Turns out they had legitimate reasons to be concerns. Did you know 600,000 people worldwide developed Bell’s palsy within 30 days after the vaccine? I know someone like that and she now has a permanently paralyzed face. What you don’t realize is that we’ve been getting vaccinated for years with other vaccines and that we have legitimate reasons for having concerns about this one. I’m so thankful it’s not mandated for my job anymore, because the last booster caused memory issues for me. Having said that, this nurse should have known better and the midwife should have refused to assist and told her to go to the hospital. They’re both at fault.

    • @archerandthemouse

Registered Nurse midwives are highly trained. Lay midwives are trained with experience but not formally medically trained. A registered nurse midwife usually works with providers and hospitals, and has a back up plan. If I were having a baby after to c-sections I would get an all clear from an Obstetrician before I attempted VBAC and I would NOT do it at home. That is a big risk and a midwife redflag. Considering the US has an abnormally high maternal mortality rate you're not really guaranteed quality healthcare anywhere here, even in a hospital. Especially in a red state. TX is one of the worst states to give birth in.

Most women choose home birth because they have previously experienced a traumatic birth at the hospital. It's not just about having some hippy dippy experience, it's about not experiencing coercion, freedom of movement, avoiding interventions that cause issues, etc. Many hospital interventions are unnecessary and dangerous. The problem is that this midwife was negligent. Women do not normally die from home births.

I don't know what her complications on her previous births were, but I was warned on my first child not to try going through labor--after a bout of Braxton-Hicks, they hospitalized me and took the baby that night because the contractions had gotten more serious, plus he was full-term so there was no reason to put it off. Hubby was going to get snipped but the month before his appt, we had a condom split and boom…our 4th was on his way (a week before ovulation mind you, he was a real surprise). Needless to say, I went to a high risk OBGYN who did frequent ultrasounds and I was on bed rest the last 6 months. My OB took him a month early and while he did have a short stay in the NICU, he was healthy and fine. Since I was already open, I made sure they tied my tubes- cut, fried, stitched, clamped. The pregnancy was a breeze but we all worried, my husband most of all. He still feels guilty and that was 20 years ago. But short answer is, yes, it’s possible to have a successful pregnancy following a rupture but not recommended, especially if you can’t stay off your feet. But I love my little surprise guy so much, I can’t imagine life any other way. On a side note, I was diagnosed with Elhers Danlos after his birth and found out many women with this condition are at high risk of rupture, especially if they’ve had a previous C-section but it can happen spontaneously even without one.

Right? This makes absolutely no sense. She had two very high risk deliveries that occurred in the hospital, so…..3rd time’s the charm? Roll the dice on that tiebreaker? So not just one, but two people with medical backgrounds looked at the previous dangerous deliveries and said ‘chyup let’s do this!’ Yes, a scar represents the stronger part of any injury, however, the surrounding tissue is that much more susceptible to rupture. Along with so many countless complications that a midwife is just incredibly unprepared for and this is just a recipe for disaster and tragedy. I believe the midwife is just a complete fraud who should absolutely lose her license, but where’s the due diligence on this ER nurse’s part? There’s absolutely no chance she wasn’t intelligent enough to know to check the credentials and rating on this person, but also to know enough that having *A HOME DELIVERY UNDER THE CHRISTMAS TREE AND STOCKINGS* was just grossly negligent and terribly irresponsible and dangerous on her part. I don’t care what this midwife promised, she was educated in the medical field and knew enough physicians that would have advised her on the correct steps to take, even if she chose to ignore them.

Having your uterus cut can increase your chances of uterine rupture in a subsequent birth, which is a medical emergency and can cause death if not treated immediately. Often women who have had a c section are advised to not try a vaginal delivery again bc of this risk.

I fail to see the validity of a lawsuit here. They made the choice to move forward with this midwife, and anyone wanting to do a VBAC is very high risk and should not do a home birth. Sounds like a lack of research on the midwife (you can't just go off someone's answers). This could have been totally prevented. Home births should not be permitted for high risk women, for these exact reasons. A repeat C-section is a small price to pay for getting to stay alive and have a healthy, living baby.

I used a midwife, but she worked in my OB doctor's office and I gave birth in the hospital. You don't have to hire an independent midwife. Find an OB who has one on staff. That way the OB can handle or monitor any issues that come up during your pregnancy and answer vital questions about whether or not a home birth is in your and baby's best interest based on your personal health and medical history. A midwife is not a doctor, and an independent midwife could sway your decisions based on their financial best interest instead of your best interest. it has nothing to do with aesthetics and has everything to do with the health and wellbeing of both mother and child. Birth is physiological and home births especially in america treat it as such. C-section rates in america are high and the CDC just put out notice admitting that women are being neglected and abused. The survival of mother and child is the bare minimum. Obstetric violence and traumatic births never leave the mother and depending on what occurred can cause unnecessary complications for the baby.

I was told i could attempt a VBAC with my second child, at the hospital, but due to my sons heart rate dropping, when i was nearly 8 centimeters dilated, i had an emergency c-section.
Fast forward my last two pregnancies, i was never given the option to try another natural birth, because of this possibility.
Why in the world would she even consider attempting this, and being a nurse, is beyond me?

Do your due diligence before trusting anyone. This is tragic. She should not have been allowed to keep practicing.

She’s an ER nurse, she has medical experience she knows after those two c sections that she shouldn’t have a home birth it’s ridiculous but the midwife is also just a responsible

This mother was a nurse. She knew better. She put her own perception of a positive birth experience above everything, above her unborn baby’s life, above her own life, and above the value of her living children having a mother. Was it worth it? She could be alive and holding a healthy baby right now, but she chose to make a reckless and selfish choice. My only sympathy is for her poor motherless children who need to live with the knowledge that their mother chose her own wants and desires for a special experience above everything else, even then.

I wound always recommend going to the hospital or a birthing center that’s next to a hospital. 99% of the time things go ok but when they don’t you have minutes before there’s no coming back. A woman can die in 5 minutes from bleeding out, that’s in the hospital. A C-section scar can rupture when contracting. That’s why most women will have another C-section instead of a vaginal birth. There are hospitals that will not perform a vaginal birth after a C-section because of the risks. It’s unfortunate that this happen. Ideally only women who have no high risk diagnoses and are healthy should give birth at home. Again, this is just awful for everyone. People need to remember that pregnancy and giving birth can sometimes have complications and when complications happen you need healthcare providers that are knowledgeable and have the resources to help you.

I’m so confused on how this was okayed. Can someone let me know please. Who allowed a high risk pregnancy to be done at home?? I was on insulin only, no previous pregnancies, my first, and wasn’t allowed to have a home birth. And if you’re 35 and over you’re considered advance maternal age which is also high risk .so how did this happen?

If the Mama was under a doctor's care at all, she probably made this decision against her doctor's orders. Would be very surprised if a number of her co-workers didn't advise her against it. Sounds as though she was deadset on hoping for a miracle. 😢

I'm glad they are reaching out to the father to advocate. Truly a sad story. God has something special for this family.

im a nurse and know they dont recommend thisVBAC. after csection they will advocate for future csection. i know everyone dreams of natural vaginal birth but we need to dream about safe birth. one without trauma to child and/or trauma to mom.
this is why i choose not to be in this specialty. people push back so hard for the dream birth plan and do not have space to trust their health providers.
Im so sorry and I also want this midwife license revoked. She could have practiced closely w medical care team for high risk births so
the transition to hospital would be smooth. the midwives here in berkeley are excellent and work with the hospital.

Vbac’s are safe, but she had a complicated C-section, and this midwife failed to provide a basic standard of care

I had two natural births and BEGGED my first doctor for a c-section.. in the middle of pushing. She looked at me like I was nuts. Everyone may dream of natural births, but not me. Too painful.

@AmyLeeAngelLove agreed. My first was natural, and it took me 2 years to heal from the stitches, with permanent disfigurement in my perineum. 6lb 8oz baby, stuck in birth canal, vacuum extraction, and episiotomy from hole to hole.
I opted (begged!) for a c section for baby no 2, the recovery was so mucb easier. I could pee without pain. No stitches except for my stomach, which honestly in comparison didn't hurt nearly as bad. Easier to walk, easier to move, much faster healing. No sexual issues afterwards. Baby was 8lb 15oz, water broke before my scheduled time, the whole c section itself was 30 minutes, predictable, and not nearly as painful.
Baby no 3 (surrogacy) right for c section. Water broke 3 days early, they prepared me for the room, 30 minutes in and baby was out. I spent more time waiting for them to get me in the room than the whole birthing process.

Things go wrong during childbirth. It’s risky. Mom knew this. You cannot guarantee a perfect birth. Ever.
