Speedrunning? Parses? GDKP? Wake up, it's 2008 and we are gonna see Naxx 10 for the first time!
Often I read about people worrying they are behind the curve as an expansion progresses. WotLK is THE most casual friendly Classic version of WoW we have seen so far, and by a long way.
    Let's talk about it.

I'm fresh to Classic and I was talking to some people on a guild I've entered (they recruit msg saying it was a laid-back casual guild). Chatting one day in the guild chat I've mentioned that I was going Blacksmith/JC on my Warrior and Mining or Herb/Alchemy on my Rogue, maybe later changing the gathering to Mining. An officer sent a private msg after a couple minutes explaining to me how much better (and in his vision, essential) Engineering was for both classes. He insisted that I went Engineering/JC on my main and the other Engineering and, being cool and laid-back, I could pick whatever second profession on my alt.
I said I was gonna thinking about it and then, couple minutes later, he kicked my alt and then my main from the guild lol

Exactly, and him trying to state that "the game is casual" is completely wrong. Classic was NOT casual if min-max guilds cleared content in an hour, and you, in a casual guild, or a pug, would clear content in 6 hours. I'd rather minmax every day and play with sweats than play with some boomer who clears content slower. WillE runs off this "casual meme" for clicks because it's one of the main things boomers say about WoW.. yes, the players back then were bad, but it doesn't mean that raiding was EVER casual. There's more casual aspects. I don't even consider gold farming casual.

I think many people have the fear of falling behind, so even though they want to relax, lean back and enjoy the ride, they feel like they can't. Players feel like they have to level quickly and go for the BiS gear. This makes the pool of "hardcore" players bigger, which motivates "casual" players to shift into the hardcore camp, because - once again - they fear falling behind. If everyone just took a chill pill, everyone could get to chill without feeling behind. But this is sadly an impossible scenario. I guess you have to look inward and just try to enjoy it by yourself as much as possible.

This happened to me. I started playing again after a few years, and rolled a mage and had fun, and the guild I joined immediately told me I need to "reroll". Ridiculous. I come from Final Fantasy XIV where community is super accepting and social and there is no real "meta". Anyways, it just turned me off and I ended up switching servers to one of the fresh servers and making a hunter, which may not be top dps, but I am having a blast, and people have been so fun to hang out with.

'The meta' is pointless anyway. If you just take a moment to read your spells and try stuff out, you'll find stuff that outperforms 'the meta' until it _becomes_ the new meta.
Furthermore, if you play something you don't vibe with, you're not going to reach the theoretical numbers anyway...

    • @tristanbrooks6594
      @tristanbrooks6594 2 роки тому +2

I literally facepalm reading this thread. Yes, Mage is extremely good in WotLK. But if they already have a bunch of mages there are diminishing returns on having more. People just saying "weird, mage is the best class" like you know the comp.
When you join a guild you need to get on the same page as the organizers, right or wrong. You can help them reach an understanding that you feel is better or different that allows for your own gameplay decisions but unless you're in charge you have a duty to conform or a right to find a better guild.
FF has a meta as well. Every MMORPG has a meta. Now you can do a lot more social content in FF without following a meta than WoW but that's a different statement.
I'm glad OP is having fun with people that are fun. At the end of the day finding fun people on the same page is how you enjoy WoW. Don't be afraid of doing what you want and waiting/searching for that group of people you like and play the game similarly enough to be worth collaborating with.

I think you nailed the thing I disliked the most about TBC perfectly actually.
I actually quite LOVED TBC. It was very very fun. If they did a TBC SoM, I would absolutely play it.
But, one thing they should do in that, if it's done, is make buffs raid wide.
We know it can be done. I just personally think that parsing was quite unfair in TBC overall. You could do an insane amount of damage and help your raid kill a boss quickly, and then discover that your parse wasn't good enough because your raid couldn't provide you with 3 rolling bloodlusts.
That's on top of the salt that comes from guilds bending over backwards to supe up ONE person's DPS that night. It's just a really unhealthy environment to raid in at the end of the day. For me, with raiding, I enjoy min/maxing my char as much as the next guy and I super value taking it very seriously, but it's more about utility and teamwork being fun for me than it is "number more biggr" at the end of the day.
I always raised my hand to be on warlock tank, curse of tongues, and banish duties over just hitting shadowbolt over and over again.
It's nice to get a good parse, but honestly for me once I get it like 90+ I am good and only concerned with being useful for the rest of my team. I know the cheese that goes into getting absurdly high 99 parses, and I am not really interested in doing that honestly. Hitting one button over and over again after popping consumes and trinkets while in the perfect group is only fun and exciting for so long lol. Give me something different to do please!

But because of this mentality and walking that fine line brings in min max players to my guild, I am painfully blunt about how they should be expected to act within the confines of my guild. Yes, most of those players leave but the ones that stay, are some long standing guildies and friends within the game. *shrug*

I'm glad to see the casual mindset isn't completely dead. I played during original WotLK and partially into cata and I always just loved leveling at my own pace and enjoy the journey and little adventures on the way and I'm doing it the same way now in classic. I have never done a raid in my life since back then I was way too much of a noob that didn't even fully understand english yet. Now that I actually know what I'm doing I'd love to have a shot at some casual raiding if I can find the right people for it. I have no idea how viable raiding is with my mindset or if it's even possible to begin with, if it's not then there's still other things i'll enjoy doing at max lvl. My only concern is that WotLK classic might not be around long enough for me to even reach that point with my playstyle (I like to switch characters to lvl and having less free time and all that...). Personally I really hope they don't continue to cata and if they do that they atleast keep the WotLK server instead of removing them like the TBC ones. Also not sure how raiding would even work out if I'm several months late to the different patches and stuff. All around me I see people prepairing and gearing for raids as quickly as possible and move on as the patches get released. Would it still be possible to find people doing the "older" raids of the expansion or are those raids not really a thing anymore when the expansion moves on?
tl;dr: I"m enjoying the casual and slow leveling experience but at the same time i'm afraid I'll be "too late" to see what endgame really has to offer"

They could take everything you had and then chop up your body to use a decoration for their house. I think even mobs could loot you if you died. Then there was Shadowbane. If you died you lost EXP. You could actually level backwards! If someone was hunting you, griefing you, you could actively lose levels faster than you'd gain them. They were wild games for sure, but honestly I don't miss those aspects of games. Having to do a bit of a run wasn't fun. But at least you knew that all you lost was a bit of time.

Now with Wrath Classic - the start of my WoW days, the expansion I finally broke level 12 in, then 20, 30, now that same character is my Retail Bae. I told myself I'd rush to be ready for launch but when I realised I won't be ready (level 46 with 6 days to go and not a lot of time anymore) I actually got very down about it.
Then I realised I should just take a step back and enjoy my time, and I'm loving Classic again. Will I be ready for 11pm next week? Hell no. Will I still bash Wotlk out and kill the LK which I never got to do in Wrath? (We got stuck at 6/12). You bet I will. I'm coming for you Arthas, you better be ready for my Bear ass!

Now I have all 4 classes that can tank, as tanks, at max level. Pre-patch made me realize why I quit raiding (particularly gearing up in dungeons) in wotlk. Threat is no longer an issue for tanks and dps. After pre-patch you just stand there and look pretty while enjoying your rotation. Little worry about DPS pulling aggro and getting back aggro. TBC had it right for threat management, except for paladins, which my opinion should have been normalized to druid/warrior while requiring an active rotation to maintain aggro - many times when pally tanking, I don't actually physically hit most mobs before they die -I'd judge the first and judge the 2nd on cooldown on the highest hp mob remaining in a pack. One suggestion for tbc pally tank design would be the holy bonus to threat doesn't work on a mob until the paladin has applied a judgement (now on GCD) to the mob when Righteous Fury is active. It's not tanking if you can just stand there spamming Holy Shield and Consecrate and not hit anything and still maintain aggro.

I still love Wow and am even enjoying it almost as much as I did back in the day. But sometimes I have to turn Trade Chat off. I’m also convinced a lot of people are sabatoging their own enjoyment by feeling like min-maxing is a requirement or a chore rather than fun.

There are guilds/players that are casual and guilds/players that min max. If you, as a casual player, decide to join guild with a min max culture, its kind of on you. Same goes the other way around. Just be honest with who you are and what you want out of the game and align with others that fit. From my own experience, though anecdotal, more friction arises when a min maxer joins a casual guild than the other way around. I think the very nature of a min maxer leads to a mindset of 'only one way to play this game' where a casual player has a higher chance of being a bit more open to alternate play styles.

wotlk struck the perfect balance between "hardcore" and casual, i started playing in early warth, and by the time iw was 80 (toc/ony patch), i met all kinds of players, but i felt welcomed as i could do all conent available (not max difficulty), but everything, and by the end of it (RS), i was pugging 25H groups, i think it was the perfect formula so people could enjoy both and go in between

Running from Kargath to BRM was so fun. All guilds gathering up and running together. Wiping those pesky Alliance that held the mountain. Then getting totally wiped by 20 of their alt mages hidden above the orb into Blackwing Lair...we even took our alts and baited when going into Naxx. Pretending to run in from the west, flanking them. And wiping them. Summoning onto Naxx/AQ, under Naxx. Clearing the 4 wings of Naxx to, to then go get WBs together. To be able to down sapphiron... Alliance had their palas and could kill without them. We killed sapph once without WBs. Insane how much easier palas made things.

I decided to join WotLK at the start with my shadow priest and this time, I WON'T FOLLOW GUIDES! I'll play it like Ii supposed to, jump on the boat, ship to Northrend and start questing, dungeoning. I'll only check what stats I need to prioritize, but nothing else. I'll just play for fun and do whatever I feel like doing. Anyone planning the same?

Maybe do some PvP. Tired of all of those? Just go into starter zone to help noobs. And just like that rotating things gets fun and interesting

One problem with Classic in particular is that it's on a faster track than retail vanilla/tbc/wotlk was in terms of content release time, which means that the people who typically enjoy progressing at the regular pace they're used to from standard WoW now feel pressured to find ways to quicken their progression. That's where the ever so prevalent and invasive GDKP stuff comes from, I think.
Warmane "fixed" this by with their seasonal progression realm by speeding up gear progression rates through more frequent raid resets in their first season (which was only present in s1), and mythic+/timewalking in their second and third seasons. Warmane's Frostmourne server practically runs on the same yearly season timeframe as classic does but their progression is simply faster as well. Alongside this the progress you made during Frostmourne's season isn't entirely gone once the season ends since your characters are transferred over to their main server which has been on-going for many years. Contrast this to Classic which once wotlk ends, nobody knows what's going to happen.
Truthfully maybe increasing the amount of loot each boss drops could be a good compromise. It increases the pace at which people are able to gear up within the already limited time frame and by making loot a bit more bountiful, reduces the FOMO feeling many people are surely feeling. Although I guess this might result in a problem where people who are already able to gear up relatively quickly might lose interest earlier on than normal. I dunno, just had to get this tangent off my chest :P

    • @octav3k
      @octav3k 2 роки тому +1

If they wanted to add extra loot, they could've (and maybe should've) done it earlier. Wrath is, imo, too late for such measures, since everyone and their grandma will be clearing all of the content and getting the loot, regardless of whether or not they minmax.

You think multiple lusts were bad, that at least benefitted an entire group. Just wait until you see the level of degeneracy that comes with all of the single target buffs like multiple tricks, PI, Focus Magic, Hysteria, multiple innervates, etc. Wrath encourages even worse behavior, by it only benefiting one person. They will need to make changes to how logging works so these buffs are reflecting on the caster instead of the receiver.
