  • I upcycled this old record cabinet into an Art Deco inspired bar cart!
    What do you think of this fun and easy upcycle?

    It did come out pretty nice, but as a carpenter you always start with a piece in each corner, then space it out from there. It creates a more realistic illusion of actual woodwork. Excellent job though.

      This is good advice! I’m curious what you would have done about the light switch on the one end getting in the way?

    • @mkl5448
      @mkl5448 2 роки тому +194

      @@703Fefe Very good question. With switches and receptacles it's about the layout, and avoiding notching the material. With that said, I would move the light switch box over so it was either completely in the wall part, or in the first vertical board running next to the casing. Changing it into a single gang narrower box in the process. In this case, it was easier for her not to do any of that and still get a very nice result. But, as a hired contractor I have to look at it in a different way. It's all very situational and really depends on what you are ok with in the end. I always tell people, it doesn't matter if I like it, do you like it? Hope that helps and good luck with your projects!

      The irony here is that this style was borne from solid plastering being so expensive before sheets, that you had it from the ceiling and down the wall as far as you could afford, and then met it with timber panels, and lining called Wainscoting. It was introduced because solid rendered plaster was so pricey, and milled timber cheap, and is now seen as ornate, and reproduced OVER plaster sheet, using composite panels because timber is now so expensive because trees gone.

      @@bend3rbot isn't it sad? I didn't know about that process, but I did know that Chinese builders ordered heavy, gorgeous wood from America for the Imperial Hotel because desirable wood there has been over-milled.

    I'm really glad to see you using color ! I'm sick to death of all beige and brown tones, and grey ones also. Growing up, my mom was the diy'er, and we had COLOR on our walls. She changed curtains,pillows and area rugs for updated looks from winter to summer, and our home was filled with books,art, and music. So is mine now. I can't paint in senior housing, but I've hung some beautiful large weavings that give the impression of wall paper.

      😉It certainly helps a lot when content creators leave us a list of materials. However, don't be shy about asking the advice of big box employees. Never met one in this department that didn't have some wood-working & product knowledge.
      I designed & helped build a faux built-in library wall for a friend. It was an IKEA billy hack, but I needed wood for a base to stabilize the units & also trim.
      My BFF had a unique situation with carpet we couldn't remove & an open end where there was a glass sliding door to the balcony. It took a lot of research to find DIY projects that included our unique variables as well as our very basic skill level. We also had to make do w/a power drill, level, studfinder & hammer too.
      🤔Plus, there were 2 outlets on that wall, so we had to figure out work arounds for cabinet lighting while still having access to 🔌power.
      The billy instruction booklet came in handy to create my own step×step plans. Using their product drawings helped me visualize & think out the order of each step, so I didn't forget anything🔩. Also brought plans &📷photos of my project links as back up to show them.
      The multitude of clerks @ L's & HD were extremely patient & kind. Great ideas to secure & stabilize the units, best products to use, etc. Also about lighting options. 🪚They did the cuts too.
      We left the original footboard & crown molding intact, but worked around it. Attached a new header & used double stick tape on the footboard trim to temporarily unify the units. In future, it can be disassembled & reconstructed for new flooring. Still secure 3 years later & thrilled it's getting major compliments from visitors.
      Happy DIYing. 🍀Good luck!
