And everyone remember a best by date means the taste and quality are a grantee to that date NOT that it goes bad on that date. Learn what “Best”, “Sell”, and “Use” by dates mean. We throw away tons of food each year because we don’t know what the dates truly mean. For me these dates are a relatively new thing. When I was younger nothing had dates. I’m a retired Medical Professional and taught this to my students. Learn how to check eggs before throwing them away.

@@dberger1010 Too much goes to waste. Home food waste is 43% of all food waste. That's your paycheck going into the trash. Even the "expiration" doesn't mean much on many items. Don't let food rot in the fridge. Use the liquid off foods rather than willy nilly pouring it down the drain. Think before you throw anything away as chances are it can be used - corn cob jelly, corn silk tea, dried corn husks for homemade tamales. Boiling bones for stock and saving veg liquids means you'll likely never have to buy it at the store. We had a pot of egg drop soup from homemade chicken stock a couple days ago and used the stale homemade corn tortilla chips as a substitute for wontons in it - 10 cents per cup, yum. Save every teeny bit of leftovers to create a meal at the end of the week. Made two jelly roll sized pizzas this week using homemade dough topped with a homemade sauce and leftovers for $3.

Right. According to the USDA website, if stored properly, canned food will last indefinitely. It may lose some nutritional value and have some texture changes, but it is safe to eat.
Check for large dents along the seams and any bulging/leaks.

For the past three weeks, I have been unable to find the store brand of white bread at Wal-Mart and Food Lion. I had to buy the expensive Sunbeam bread at 3.99 a loaf verses the store brand of 1.67. Looks like I'm going to have to start making my own white bread at home. I eat a lot of soups and sandwiches in my diet because of it being a cheaper meal than most other meals and I can stretch the soup out over several meals. The only produce I buy from Walmart is celery and shredded iceberg lettuce for tacos. The two grocery stores I have don't even carry shredded lettuce. The 8oz bag has stayed at $1.98 since I started buying it last year. They have one pound bags that cost less per ounce for families(I live alone).
Most of the spices at Walmart have been staying at $1.12 for the last year also. They have one of those huge DVD bins that was full of the most commonly used spices like garlic powder, garlic salt, onion powder, onion flakes, paprika, parsley, chili powder, oregano, italian seasoning, lemon pepper, and others I can't remember. But the last time I was there only a few days ago the bin was suddenly only about 15% full instead of the 110% full it's been for the last year. I meant to check the spices aisle but forgot to, to see if they had moved them there.

Why prices are going up - especially produce - Individual states are shutting down the water supply to FARMS. Next thing to go up in price: Potatoes. The state of Idaho just told potato farmers that they are being shut off on 500,000 acres of potato fields to divert it to one of the larger electric producing companies (wonder if that electricity is staying local in ID or if they sold it to another state?). Unfortunately, this may permanently shutter these farmers because they already planted their 2024 crops! Our government(s) have gone completely stupid and/or evil - take your choice - both are bad.

We stocked up on salt a while back. If we get one now it's just an extra. And we bought two of the big things of black pepper from Sam's Club a few months ago. So we're good for a year. We don't use a lot of spices anyway so if we have S & P we're good. We also bought butter and made ghee a few months ago. We probably need to grab some butter to freeze though. The pudding cakes went up to $9.99 at Kroger. Apparently they couldn't sell them for that price so I've noticed they're back to $7.99 BUT the cakes are about half the size they were. We buy them though, because we don't eat the bigger ones before they spoil anyway. Aldi's milk is still $2.92 but I swear it seems like it's a little watery. Or is it just us? So we buy the whole instead of the 2%. Grapes are $1.69/lb at Aldi in Rome, GA. Lettuce is $1.69/head and it looks like a good head for a change. Aldi's Takis are down about 0.30 but we don't know for how long. I know we buy weird stuff but maybe we can help someone with our few prices.

The manufacturers clear out the inventory by putting it on a really good sale..the next time it appears on the shelf, the package will be smaller. I saw this recently with snack sizes for pretzels. I used to buy a package of 12 little bags at 1.25 ounces each little bag. The same brand of pretzels are now in a box of 10 1-ounce bags for a few dollars more than previous pricing. Shrinkflation!

A 20 lb Turkey will grind down to 7 lbs of Turkey burger and then you can roast the bones and make stoke out of the scraps. 2 whole chickens will grind down to 3 lbs of ground Chicken and the you can make stock out of the scraps. stock up at 1/2 the cost

Prices went up during covid and the companies found out people would pay the prices so they just keep the prices up. These food companies are making record profits while we all pay for it. Price gouging. Where I live a pound of grapes hardly ever gets under $4.99. Small town in the midwest.

People shouldn't be surprised. The warnings have been out there for the past 2 years at least. Sadly it is going to get A LOT worse before it gets better. I've focused on getting a garden going, and making it bigger every year. I just put up a bunch of broccoli that I grew. Tomorrow I have potatoes to harvest. Do EVERYTHING you can! Lots of folks out there still have their blinders on. Once they start to "see" what is happening, it will be full blown panic. PS...our local sales tax in my county just went up 1%, and yes, we get taxed on groceries in my area.

I don't know if SE Grocers is exclusive to Winn Dixie, but it IS one of the "store brands" that Winn Dixie sells. They actually have several "store brands" and not one like other stores do. For example, their "store brand" of bacon is called "Hickory Sweet" and has been around forever. I am 58 and I remember having that for breakfast all the time as a kid. I haven't had it in ages because they don't put it on sale like they do Jimmy Dean, Smithfield, and Wright bacon.
Their "store brand" soft drinks are called Chek and have been around since I was a kid too. That is a holdover from back when I was a kid(again)and the store was called Quick Check, but the check was a check mark instead of the word.
Winn Dixie was bought by Aldi last year, and when I was talking to one of the managers at the store I go to, they said that they were told it would take a pretty long time before they started converting Winn Dixies to Aldis.

SE Grocers owns Winn Dixie and Harvey's.
SEgrocers is their store brand. They are very good, most better than some brand names.
As far as price, the canned goods are still cheaper than brand names, but more expensive than Walmart. I have noticed that they have had less "sales" and more BOGOs over the past year. You don't really know the price until you get to the store. They might lump 3 or 4 different items together in the ad, and then say that you could save $X.xx on 2, using the most expensive item as an example. I wish they would just say how much each item was.

  • @harrymaciolek9629
