my fear for if they have a mumble option in the skywalker saga is that the cutscenes are going to be structured around proper dialogue, so unless mumble mode has its own unique cutscenes, it most likely will fall flat
I mean it could also be the other way aroun. You could have the scenes be structured around mumbling but then just replace the mumbling with dialouge for a fix. That would obviously make the idea of "show, dont tell" fail but its a thought. I could see there being minor changes to scenes if they approached it that way
One of my favorite touches is that when Anakin gets his his hand cut off in the episode 2 adaptation, the actual Lego hand piece gets cut in half instead of just popping off like one would expect.
I think that the first Lego Batman game doing its own original story was one of the best decisions that TT games ever made. That meant they weren’t restricted to the formula of the movies.

@@ShockwaveFPSStudios I was talking about LEGO Batman 2. It’s one of my favorite games of all time, up there with Batman Arkham series, Skyrim, Rachet and Clank.
when i used to play the originals with my dad and younger brother, when i was like 6 back in 2005, we'd make up dialogue for the mumbles. my favorite memory of this was when I was on the Jedi Temple level in the first game and when Obi wan saw Yoda my dad dubbed it as Obiwan asking Yoda if he wanted to get coffee, but Yoda said the line was too long- followed by the little gaggle of clones.
My issue with fully voiced lego games is that they try to include both visual and spoken gags, yet neither end up succeeding because they rarely blend together.
I always knew there was something different about the newer LEGO games that kept me from becoming interested in playing them. 15 years ago, I would've lost my mind if I knew I'd get to play all the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies in a LEGO game. But now all the cleverness and endearing simplicity is gone.
@Siddhanth Ganesh Not really. I tried LEGO Avengers and there was something off about it. And it wasn’t just the voice acting either, since I love LEGO Jurassic World, which also has voice acting.
@Siddhanth Ganesh Lego Avengers was just bland and generic, it didn't feel like it had an actual charm. Lego Star Wars are Indiana Jones are example of them adapting an existing film series correctly, whereas Lego Avengers had the potential to be just that, but it was stale and boring, and I felt no emotion while playing it.
I actually really liked the old lego games where they just mumbbled. It was kinda like Tom and Jerry where you had to figure out what they were talking about.
What i love about Lego games is that you can take part in actual movies and you get flashbacks from watching them. Lego will be always in my heart no matter how old iam
I would definitely prefer a mumble mode. On a somewhat unrelated note I was kinda surprised when you pointed out the droid voice saying "intruder alert" in the first level because when I first played these games I didn't understand much English and it just sounded like random droid sounds to me.
I lost my faith in LEGO games and cartoons lately, they use the same type of humor and directing in movies and cutscenes. I name it "Did you understand that self-aware pop-culture reference?" and "Yeah, we are making a parody" humour. Miss their old simple charm.
I personally really enjoy Lego Marvel 2, it doesn't rely on comedy but instead has a somewhat simple but entertaining story, and then where there is comedy, it's pretty solid most of the time.
Fun fact: my first experience with star wars was through lego star wars complete saga. As a kid i watched on youtube all the mumbling cutscenes and they won me over
Actually, I think Force Awakens had the lines of the movies, but they were redone for the game. Plus, there were also extra chapter and extra lines. Kylo Ren saying “I could just walk to ti and grab it but it wouldn’t be as cool” at the end when trying to force pull Luke’s lightsaber is amazing.
Say what you will, but LEGO Clone Wars was probably my favorite of the games, because it's the one I remember from my childhood (I did play the others, but that was the one that I played the most). The one disappointing thing about it is that it wrapped up its story right as the actual show was getting good. I'm seriously hoping they have DLC or something planned to finish the Clone Wars saga, because seeing elements from that game expanded on would be good by itself, but being able to play storylines like the Umbara arc, Darth Maul's return and rise to power with Deathwatch and his crime syndicate, the stuff on Dathomir with Ventress, the Siege of Mandalore and order 66, and all the other great stuff in the Clone Wars? Now that would make a fantastic game and I would 100% pay for that as DLC to the Skywalker Saga.
@Axtwyt Starkiller Wasn’t it like one of the first LEGO games to start having voice acting? Because Lego Star Wars III came out only a year prior and had grunts.
@@-Teague- actually, LEGO Island was the first LEGO Game to do voice acting, LEGO Batman 2 only brought back Voice Acting, as LEGO Star Wars 1 - LEGO Harry Potter Years 5-7 removed Voice Acting and replaced it with Grunting, I don’t know what the Last LEGO Game Pre LEGO Star Wars 1 to have voice acting. which is one of the things we can all agree on.
I’ll just throw this out here as one who was raised on LEGO games as a kid; they shouldn’t talk, period. As soon as they stopped miming and grunting, and started speaking real words, the immersion and enjoyment just tanked afterwards. Sure, they’re still fun and I still play them as a grown-ass man, but I just can’t get over the fact they actually TALK now

@@marcosgalvis3498 Because in addition to adding grunts they would also have to make new cutscenes so they make sense and are funny without the voice acting.

The LEGO movie: the video game actually benefited from voice acting as it carried over the humor of the movie and added a bunch of dialogue in that was hilarious and worked in context.
Voice acting can certainly have its charms aswell but theres a saying in germany that goes "not macht erfinderisch" which translates to "necessity is the mother of invention". And i think this applies perfectly to the Lego games, restricting speech from the characters forced the devs to get creative with how they convey emotions and information, they couldnt just lazily add some lines, they had to actually TRY. And when you actually try the end result will more often be better than when youre lazy. Its like how a bunch of old innovative games only were so innovative because of hardware limitations.
having come to this video late, I want to say that there really is 2 types of LEGO gamers. There are people who prefer the older style of game, with a "hub world", no voice lines, goofy humor, not as many collectables, and less characters in order for each of them to be of value in some way. Then there are people who prefer the newer style of game, with an "open world", voice lines, immature comedy, loads of collectables, and tons of characters with plenty of variety in use and style. In truth it comes down to picking a year: pre-2012 or post-2012?
One thing i will say about LEGO the clone wars is that i really hoped the big scale battle mechanics would return in later games, and that they sadly never did. It would have been perfect for LEGO the lord of the rings for example. But that's just me.
The one thing I will say about Skywalker Saga talking is that they are entirely new voice actors. This means that it won't be that horrible isolated dialogue that we got with Avengers or Jurrasic Park. It also means they can probably tailor jokes and gags better to the dialogue and keep things more consistent. Idk.
Bold of you to assume it was isolated. It sounds (in Avengers especially) like they just superimposed the movie over the cutscenes and left in background noise.
@@Double-R-Nothing yep. I only played the first two levels of the Lego Avengers game because of the terrible production quality. The audio inserts were extremely awkward and out of context. And gameplay-wise you just literally act out the movie, which gets boring quickly because the levels are 90% combat.
The comedy needs to be "smarter" with mumbles. I can tell you, "I'm sad" with a deadpan face and you'll know I'm sad, but if im sat in the corner hands on face, elbows on my knees, you can feel it . It might be harder to make that style of comedy work, but it is a great emotional weight added to a game, comedy or not
Now, I didn't play all the Lego Games but out of all the games that have voice lines, the only one I actually felt like it worked(and it worked really well) was Undercover, probably because this one is telling an original story instead of a parody, so the humour feels pretty natural.
When I played the classic Lego games with my brothers, the cutscenes were one of the best parts of the games, it always felt like a kid was puppeting his lego minifigures, just like any kid would do
No way will a mumble toggle turn out well. They aren’t going to reanimate and rewrite every joke/scene, to have it be visually funny. It would just be the same game with no talking.
I think the problem with following a movie based batman / marvel videogame is that they would feel very limited with characters and locations especially back then when superhero movies werent connected and even if they were lego avengers showed how bad that was
In terms of retelling established events in the Skywalker Saga, I believe Mumbles are a great option. After all we already know the story, and as Matt said in the video we just want to play through and immerse ourselves in the stories throughout the saga. The Benefit of the Lego Skywalker Saga is the clone wars Series Actors being involved, so even if there are jokes that don’t land, at least we still get to hear those amazing voices being put into the prequels. As for the other Voice replacements, it will definitely be hit or miss depending on the casting choices.
I would like the mumble setting, as long as the cut scenes could also work in that context. I also hope they don't just pull dialog from the movies. It works fine for cut scenes but it is rather jarring in gameplay as you mentioned.
The new trailer for Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga has confirmed it: There will be an option to enable "Mumble Mode"! My hype, which wasn't really there before, immediately sky-rocketed after seeing that! I'm really really happy about this, since the gameplay looks absolutely stunning!
I was always annoyed that the setpieces and backgrounds in the Lego games weren't made of lego bricks. It would be so cool if every single background detail was visibly lego too
If they redo the cutscenes would definitely play with mumbles, however taking a voiced cutscene then just replacing the duologue wouldn't work the same
@VIBIN JOTARO I'm honestly just indifferent. Both are fine, I loke the creativoth of mumbling, but like the effort put into most of the voiced games (Minus Lego Avengers, LOTR, Hobbit and certain Dimensions levels)
While I agree that most of the humor in lego games have been lost due to the voice acting, I actually found the clip you showed from the Skywalker Saga with Palpatine attempting to shoot force lightning at Luke pretty funny because instead of just straight up electrocuting him, he pulls out the actual lego lightning pieces first
I think you hit the crux of the matter at 19:10. Storytelling is superfluous. 99% of people who play these games know well enough the franchises they imitate. This is meant to be a refreshing and entertaining alternative use of the movies' visual and character design and worldbuilding, not a complete retelling of the stories.

??? No they're not "animated"
They have normal black eyes with a little high-light just like all the modern lego minifigs.
Did you record your audio prior to picking the footage? Because what you're saying is the opposite of what is being shown on the screen.
“The Lego fights look silly”
haha I took those fights very seriously as a kid
my fear for if they have a mumble option in the skywalker saga is that the cutscenes are going to be structured around proper dialogue, so unless mumble mode has its own unique cutscenes, it most likely will fall flat
Yeah in essence the game would have to make two completely different versions for each cut scene which I don't think is a very likely thing to be done
I mean it could also be the other way aroun. You could have the scenes be structured around mumbling but then just replace the mumbling with dialouge for a fix. That would obviously make the idea of "show, dont tell" fail but its a thought. I could see there being minor changes to scenes if they approached it that way
That's exactly what I was gonna say but I had to make sure nobody said it before
One of my favorite touches is that when Anakin gets his his hand cut off in the episode 2 adaptation, the actual Lego hand piece gets cut in half instead of just popping off like one would expect.
Huh, that's honestly pretty neat.

Yikes! If Skywalker Saga was meant to be their new flagship, then count me out of that sinking fleet.
*TT Games:* Considers a mumble toggle.
*Me in my best Palpatine voice:* "Do it!"
I think that the first Lego Batman game doing its own original story was one of the best decisions that TT games ever made. That meant they weren’t restricted to the formula of the movies.
Ya I thought it was cool to see that Star Wars followed the story while Batman had its own new stuff but I guess cause I never saw the movies some people wanted film adaptions too. Maybe the next Lego Batman follows the dark knight
All 3 stories in Lego batman 1 were loosely based off batman 1989, batman returns and batman forever
I thought this was a LEGO Star Wars Video, not a LEGO Batman video.
Okay but after vader dies in lego I love it afterwards when luke closes the door on the shuttle and vader's body just slides in lol
So Skywalker Saga just came out and it is amazing. The magic has not been lost.
If memory serves, we have LEGO Pirates of the Carribbean to thank for the "animals popping up where they shouldn't" joke.

I remember seeing the first screenshot of Lego Star Wars back in late 2004 and being confused, now Lego Skywalker Saga is somehow my most anticipated upcoming game.
It's insane to me that aside from episode's 4 and 5, Lego SW is the only thing SW fans can agree on.
Episode 5 is majorly overrated(imo)
Lego sw tcw is a better and more enjoyable game than tcs (imo)

I was talking about LEGO Batman 2. It’s one of my favorite games of all time, up there with Batman Arkham series, Skyrim, Rachet and Clank.
Because it wouldn’t help his argument lmao
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
Lego lord of the rings had the best usage of lego physical humor of any of the voice acted lego games
I personally prefer lego Batman 2 but lord of the rings is a good example of that also
It was so good that it was in the gameplay, for crying out loud!
I will never forget playing as Boromir impaled on a broom!
when i used to play the originals with my dad and younger brother, when i was like 6 back in 2005, we'd make up dialogue for the mumbles. my favorite memory of this was when I was on the Jedi Temple level in the first game and when Obi wan saw Yoda my dad dubbed it as Obiwan asking Yoda if he wanted to get coffee, but Yoda said the line was too long- followed by the little gaggle of clones.
My issue with fully voiced lego games is that they try to include both visual and spoken gags, yet neither end up succeeding because they rarely blend together.
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate that entire time travel bit? Another great vid!
thank you MC!

Still better than the actual avengers game they made
@Siddhanth Ganesh Not really.
@Siddhanth Ganesh yes, but that's not the entire game, you could say that about any Lego game
The Mcu wasn’t around 15 years ago
I actually really liked the old lego games where they just mumbbled. It was kinda like Tom and Jerry where you had to figure out what they were talking about.
Tom and Jerry relied on physical storytelling
This aged well
What i love about Lego games is that you can take part in actual movies and you get flashbacks from watching them. Lego will be always in my heart no matter how old iam
19:35 you missed a perfect chance for the clip of Diego Luna saying: “I’ve been in this fight since I was 6 years old.” From Rogue One.
Lego Star Wars was literally my childhood, I really hope this one is as good as we remember the old ones where
I would definitely prefer a mumble mode.
On a somewhat unrelated note I was kinda surprised when you pointed out the droid voice saying "intruder alert" in the first level because when I first played these games I didn't understand much English and it just sounded like random droid sounds to me.
I’m so happy they’re bringing the mumbles and grunts back for the Skywalker saga
you can record ps2 footage by pausing, tracing the screen on paper, repeating for every frame and creating a flipbook
15:53 LEGO Indiana Jones 2 was actually an amazing game, especially on the WII, but mainly because you could make your own levels.
I think Harry Potter had its own editor. I hope Skywalker Saga gets their own level editor
I used to love doing that and spent way too long time doing it.
@@Mopsikus The original LEGO Harry Potter allowed you to create custom levels, so you're right.
I lost my faith in LEGO games and cartoons lately, they use the same type of humor and directing in movies and cutscenes. I name it "Did you understand that self-aware pop-culture reference?" and "Yeah, we are making a parody" humour.
Miss their old simple charm.
Oh, and this "Look, that's an unexpected PIG! LOL" thing. It doesn't get funnier as they use it more frequently.
Fortunately now, the "Mumble Mode" for *_LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga_* is confirmed and shown in action!
You were right about one thing, Master. The negotiations were short.
Man the mumbling was the best part, it was the reason I fell in love with the game and call it a 2000s gaming classic.
Don't forget about the massive army battles! They really did the work to put the WAR in the Clone Wars!
I felt that they at least did Lego Lord Of The Rings well in 2014. Even with voice acting, it’s still got amazing visual humor.
@Axtwyt Starkiller Wasn’t it like one of the first LEGO games to start having voice acting? Because Lego Star Wars III came out only a year prior and had grunts.
@Axtwyt Starkiller Lego Batman 2 was the first to do it, LOTR was the first to do it well. Just my opinion.
LEGO Batman 2 had brilliant voice work.
@Axtwyt Starkiller I don't consider it odd. He probably didn't have footage considering Warner Bros pulled it from shelves and online stores.
Am I the only one that thinks that Palpatine lightning gag was funny?
I’m not sure how rare it is to have the original complete saga, but I sure am proud to have it
Lego Star Wars was the first game I ever 100% completed and I don’t regret a single moment of the time it took to do that.
I’ll just throw this out here as one who was raised on LEGO games as a kid; they shouldn’t talk, period. As soon as they stopped miming and grunting, and started speaking real words, the immersion and enjoyment just tanked afterwards. Sure, they’re still fun and I still play them as a grown-ass man, but I just can’t get over the fact they actually TALK now
My favourite Lego game is lotr but I agree that they're generally better without talking
Mumble got tedious after a while like with clone wars and Indiana Jones 2
I think lego batman 2 was the first game to have talking characters.
@@elonmusket5676 I'm pretty sure the characters still didn't talk in Lego Indiana Jones 2, not sure about Clone Wars though

You're definitely not the only one. Mumbles in Lego form, unlike in rap form, are S tier
The people behind the upcoming Skywalker Saga game clearly understand the importance of the mumbles, so much so that they've even publicly acknowledged it. I am confident that even if the toggle doesn't come at release, it will be added in a later update.
Weren't they openly surprised by the fan feedback on mumbling in their public acknowledgement, though?
Wait how would that take an update to fix??
@@marcosgalvis3498 Because in addition to adding grunts they would also have to make new cutscenes so they make sense and are funny without the voice acting.
@@marcosgalvis3498 If it would not be included at launch, it would be a new feature coming after launch, so it would have to come in the form of an update.
@@Sophie_the_Sapphic That's never gonna happen. It'll just be an alternate audio track.
The LEGO movie: the video game actually benefited from voice acting as it carried over the humor of the movie and added a bunch of dialogue in that was hilarious and worked in context.
I played the wii version and is probably the first game I ever beat as a kid, It was so amazing
Bruh same as a kid I loved the huge battles
All my friends hated those levels for some reason, don't understand why. They were some of my favorites.
@@jemert96 You weren't missing much.
The comedy needs to be "smarter" with mumbles. I can tell you, "I'm sad" with a deadpan face and you'll know I'm sad, but if im sat in the corner hands on face, elbows on my knees, you can feel it .
It might be harder to make that style of comedy work, but it is a great emotional weight added to a game, comedy or not
Harder sure but it just means you gotta get more creative.
Now, I didn't play all the Lego Games but out of all the games that have voice lines, the only one I actually felt like it worked(and it worked really well) was Undercover, probably because this one is telling an original story instead of a parody, so the humour feels pretty natural.
When I played the classic Lego games with my brothers, the cutscenes were one of the best parts of the games, it always felt like a kid was puppeting his lego minifigures, just like any kid would do
My favorite scene from Lego Star Wars is when Luke turns on the lightsaber for the first time and chops off 3PO's head.
No way will a mumble toggle turn out well. They aren’t going to reanimate and rewrite every joke/scene, to have it be visually funny. It would just be the same game with no talking.
It will turn out less cringe though, which is good enough for me.
I honestly grew up with the classic mumbling, and I would love to see that make a comeback in Lego Star Wars 202-whenever-its-released.
I think the problem with following a movie based batman / marvel videogame is that they would feel very limited with characters and locations especially back then when superhero movies werent connected and even if they were lego avengers showed how bad that was
It's not the games that lost their magic, WE GREW UP. Get that through your thick skull. Nostalgia kills, man.
As for the other Voice replacements, it will definitely be hit or miss depending on the casting choices.
what about lego LOTR? imo its a pretty good mix. No talking during gameplay and only some voice lines in cutscenes.
I think it's a great mix in LLOTR, but I think the mix in future games after not quite...
FYI the devs for the new game have said they’ve taken on board the requests for having a muted option
I would like the mumble setting, as long as the cut scenes could also work in that context. I also hope they don't just pull dialog from the movies. It works fine for cut scenes but it is rather jarring in gameplay as you mentioned.
The new trailer for Lego Star Wars The Skywalker Saga has confirmed it:
There will be an option to enable "Mumble Mode"!
My hype, which wasn't really there before, immediately sky-rocketed after seeing that!
I'm really really happy about this, since the gameplay looks absolutely stunning!
I was always annoyed that the setpieces and backgrounds in the Lego games weren't made of lego bricks. It would be so cool if every single background detail was visibly lego too
If they redo the cutscenes would definitely play with mumbles, however taking a voiced cutscene then just replacing the duologue wouldn't work the same
Nah, Lego TFA brought most of the casts back to do new voice acting. Its how we got Masochistic Kylo actually voiced by Adam Driver.
@VIBIN JOTARO I'm honestly just indifferent. Both are fine, I loke the creativoth of mumbling, but like the effort put into most of the voiced games (Minus Lego Avengers, LOTR, Hobbit and certain Dimensions levels)
@VIBIN JOTARO I was born in 2001 and I still prefer the talking in newer lego games
soulless
While I agree that most of the humor in lego games have been lost due to the voice acting, I actually found the clip you showed from the Skywalker Saga with Palpatine attempting to shoot force lightning at Luke pretty funny because instead of just straight up electrocuting him, he pulls out the actual lego lightning pieces first
Or the droid’s retirement.
