Based on the studio recording clips I've seen, I still have very high hopes for this album. I agree with some of the comments saying it sounds a bit generic (and not really like Monuments), but has anyone else noticed that this is what metal labels usually do when a band is about to release an album? They usually release the most "generic sounding" song first because they know it is likely to have the widest appeal. Then when the album comes out, it's full of more original and awesome songs. This was the case with Periphery's last album, and I think it will be the case with this album too. My only real criticism is that I can't hear the guitars very well. For example, I know that there is some interesting guitar work going on during 0:54 to 1:04, but I can barely hear it. It just sounds like it's getting drowned out by everything else, and overall, everything sounds quite muddy. The quality in The Amanuensis was much clearer, BUT, I will withhold full judgement until the album comes out! Positive thinking, because I think this album has the potential to be great! (UPDATE: The album KICKS ASS! It's amazing! I knew it would be!)
yep, singles bring in general interest which is why I'm crossing my fingers hoping that the album is going to bring it. those studio clips are pure comedy and musical gold. if you close your eyes and think about john browne for long enough this honestly sounds better
and they can still redo this song like plini did with salt and charcoal, album version of it had a clearer more complex drums and bass sound and tone... hopefully it will happen.
So I agree with you on this, however I felt like Amanuensis was really harsh on the ears after a while. I do enjoy how much smoother and cleaner the overall sound is on this track. Could def use more guitars. Good song though!
Yeah that's where I'm torn. The Amanuensis sounded amazing, but something about the aggressive tone would cause me to need a break from John Browne's sound for a while because I'd literally be getting head aches. It wasn't because I felt that things were monotonous or sounded bad, it was more that the sharp guitar tones would physically bother me after a while no matter how much I love the music. On top of that, the album was mixed in a way that emphasized that harsh tone even more. I guess you could say I have a love/hate relationship with the album.
Totally agree with everything said here, look at the first single from PIII, The Price is Wrong. Not only is it a very bland song, it's not indicative of the album at all. From the studio updates, I have high hopes as well. I'm sure it'll be sick. I agree that Amanuensis sounds really harsh. I've gotten used to it by now, having listened to it a bunch. But it definitely causes some ear fatigue at first.
Congrats on the release guys but I have to say: that is one scooped mix, heavy emphasis on the high end and low-low-mid. Not too bothered about vocals in general so I'd love an instrumental but that's asking a lot.
What I love about Monuments is the guitar work (I love chris too). I'm having a hard time fully enjoying this song due to not being able to hear guitars. I hear vocals and atmosphere and a faint muddy rumble of the guitars. I'm quite dissapointed by this but I will stay optimistic. I hope the other tracks have guitars more up front and center rather than an after thought in the mix.
Some people bitching about it sounding "generic" because it has some Melody in it and the guitars aren't heard as much.... SO WHAT! It's a beautiful song and a banger.
I had the same sentiment. The Amanuensis was Art. Chris put a lot into it, but if the entirety of Phronesis sounds like AWOL, I'm probably only going to be blasting 1 or 2 of the 10 or so songs.
Dude for real, I knew I wasn't the only one, the lyrics are honestly really lame, the first two albums actually had thoughtful lyrics. This is like cookie cutter metal bullshit.
Blood, compare this to the Amanuensis. Chris' writing on this song was not on par! We're not judging the album, just this song. Hopefully it is not representative of the album.
New direction for them. Man, not at all what I was expecting, but I was still pleasantly surprised. These guys have come a long way since their demo. Hell, even before that.
I love how with every Output you guys come more and more to the Center of your style. I love your grooves, I love your Sound, your songwriting is great! Keep it coming!
They aren't using an axe either. They tracked all the rhythms with a peavey 6534+ and all the leads with an ampete one 100. John Browne doesn't like the fractal midrange, and said the kemper has dogshit for dynamics. He uses the L6 Helix, but none of the record tones are with that either.
the fastest tempo of all monuments songs! not bad. Miss the brady snare from the previous records. Chriss vocals remind me more of his performance in his previous band ever forthright. RIP
Dont get me wrong, monuments are probably one of my favourite bands. But, are my speakers or the guitar is not as defined/tight as it used to be? Really i can barely hear what the heck is happening behind the voice. :/
IKR 🔥 i just cant understand why they didnt go with.....haunted vessel just like the one - INSIDE YOUR HEEEAD! Its kinda "bumpy" other way.... mabye just me but cant wait for album I long time fan. Peace
I'm getting some sick Game Of Thrones vibes from the intro. Absolutely love the new song guys, been following you for ahwile now and honestly i've loved seeing yous grow
Omg, I feel like I've been waiting 5 years for a new Monuments album. Badass song but my favorite part was that 2nd verse at 1:40. So fucking sick! I'm so happy that I'm angry. Damn, this just made my day
I don't get the hate I saw for the song, maybe Facebook has turned into a negative space or maybe I'm surrounded by the wrong people but this song is one of the best thing I've heard and I've been listening to the song since it was out and it gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it!
Ohh Man incredible work!! All negative responses to this track are because I think folks are less familiar with Olly's writing style compared to Johns, and from what I understand Steele had a much bigger influence on this album in comparison to the Amanuensis(although the intro feels like its straight from Fluxconduct). Also Maylans drumming approach was quite different then Langos and so was the mix. The drum mix has never been more clear and forward on a Monuments album then what we'll experience on Phronesis! Furthermore its been FOUR years, for sure Monuments have different Ideas of what to write at this point! People complaining it sounds generic? I find theres plenty of technicality but you have to kind of find it in-between the double bass patterns. And Chris is just so Damn fresh totally blew me away especially the cleans real sexy! Love the Mix Love the track, and Love Monuments!!
Pretty chuffed with this to be honest and now super excited for the album. Only thing is that the mixing of the guitars is kinda bothering me, I feel like I'm really struggling to hear them at times and trying to fill in what I think i'm hearing. I hope this manages to get fixed on the full release.
I don't feel the soul that was encapsulated in Amenuensis is really in this song, but let me be objective about this: The song WAS good, it was definitely good, but I really heard a lot more influences from other bands than I heard of signature Monuments. Also, hopefully a lot more groove and a lot less core. Not that metalcore is a problem, but there are plenty of metalcore bands out there that already do nothing but breakdown breakdown breakdown, and I felt that, in this case, on a scale of 1 to 10, Monuments went full Born of Osiris.
That was pretty cool. Nothing like when was released I The Creator (in my opinion the best track I heard in 2014, my comment is there on the audio track) but pretty cool tho. The intro reminds me a little bit of a Machine Head and it's nice to see these young fellows trying orchestration into metal. John Browne never let me down and Chris Barretto is taking the vocals to a whole new level, the clean part is soooooo melodic, the harsh is so agressive. It's almost like a younger and studied of Chad Gray (back in the old days of "The End of All Things to Come" when he was awsome both live and in studio). Drums sounds nice, basses are very well worked. As a Djent track might be a little generic but as a progressive modern metal track I think this is will be the next level. I don't really care about genres and this audio make my day better. Lyrics are very direct message, very straight to the point, it's ok lyrics, i liked too
This sounds tight.i don't understand the hate cuz when a band releases a single it's usually a single.i have high hopes for this album and anything John Browne writes is amazing.you all need to peep his other band Flux Conduct with Renny from forever never.Browne is a writing machine and never disappoints.
The vocal line in this song changes the way this whole song sounds. It’s so well done that even the generic chord progression sounds different! Can’t to hear the rest of the album!
I like Burnt by the Sun and the Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza and come from nu metal so I'm really feeling how heavy this track gets and how straightforward it is in places. I really don't see what all the hate is about. Maybe people just need to learn to enjoy things. (In my old man voice) Back in my day there were mosh pits because no one was in the crowd analyzing the time signature of the song.
Instantly pre-ordered, which I'll do for any album they release because The Amanuensis is itself worth paying for again each year, lol. That said, I agree with the sentiment that the vocals and drums sound too forward in the mix, with the guitars sitting way too far back. I'm having to listen extremely hard to hear the additional guitar textures that I can hear just enough of to know it's there. The chords in the chorus aren't shining through. It almost seems to me like maybe this mix was satisfactory if you know what the riffs/chords/etc. sound like. Coming to the final product with fresh ears, I'm kind of bummed that I can't hear this the way I know the guys know it and have heard it through the process. I'm not trying to come off like some music snob or anything, either. I'm still 100% stoked for the album and I'll give it as many spins as I need to pick out everything I can!
Really like the production though the guitars is slightly low in the mix for my taste, but are the drums programed or something? Love the riff and vocals on this one!
John Browne you beautiful soul.
Nik Nocturnal are you doing a cover of this buddy boy
This one is Olly Steele
Anddd he did it
Olly*
Nik Nocturnal did they tune up ?

Some people just nitpick everything.
Great song can't wait to hear more! ♥️
Totally agree! Fuck the haters! Djent or not, this song fucking wails! As does Stygian Blue!
John is really the only guitarist who gets credited😑olly is sick asf aswell
Agree 100%
If you are reading this. You are loved and I hope you have a great day! Kick todays ass!
Antonio good looks mane
Just like with The Amanuensis, I’m a great fan of the clean vocals.
Who tf can dislike anything from MONUMENTS??
Finally a proper, official upload.
Congrats on the release guys but I have to say: that is one scooped mix, heavy emphasis on the high end and low-low-mid. Not too bothered about vocals in general so I'd love an instrumental but that's asking a lot.
the guitars need more definition
Man you can't judge a mix on youtube...
shorabali 100%. When you havr a fucking john browne downpicking you wanna hear all the dynamics
Yes you can. The mix is completely separate to sound fidelity which is what will suffer from UA-cam compression.
I think they fixed and reuploaded the audio or something because the guitars seem to be louder now, which is good
This is gonna be one of the sickest albums of the year!
Nick Acker nick acker
Henry Reinach ...how did you find me? 0_0
Nick Acker
Nick Acker
no u
Mix seems a bit off? Guitars seems really lost.
Ooohhh maaannn this is soooo gooooood. That scream at the end put a smile on my face. I am so hyped.
If there is one thing that has remained consistent about this band its that they always know how to nail an outro and make it sound epic af.
Frenetic riffs and humungous chorus. Ah Monuments. Thanks for being back. ♥️
Eagerly waiting for the album!
Not bad but from the band that realized"gnosis" and"the amanuensis"i expect something more
If you liked Gnosis, Check out the band Mycelia
holy shit good, and alike. and newish
This song is a helluva opener. Well done Monuments.
Some people bitching about it sounding "generic" because it has some Melody in it and the guitars aren't heard as much.... SO WHAT! It's a beautiful song and a banger.
Musically and vocally it's great....lyrics feel a bit watered down to me though in all honesty
Your comment is watered down.
I had the same sentiment. The Amanuensis was Art. Chris put a lot into it, but if the entirety of Phronesis sounds like AWOL, I'm probably only going to be blasting 1 or 2 of the 10 or so songs.

Blood, compare this to the Amanuensis. Chris' writing on this song was not on par! We're not judging the album, just this song. Hopefully it is not representative of the album.
Dudes, it's the first song. The album has 9 more. And it's been 4 years, so be patient a little more ;)
ERRA, Northlane, Born of Osiris now Monuments. We're in for some treat, bois.
Christian new Make Them Suffer is spicy too
Predwards 89 and new Skyharbor,Fit for a king.
And we got new The Afterimage + Shokran!
And Tesseract and BTBAM
Northlane ain't releasing a new album though
Anybody gonna talk about that ridiculous chord progression at 2:55?
D#m, D, F#add9, G/C#, G#, F, Bmaj6
That's wild as fuck.
Thank you for working that out, Because I really had no idea what those chords were.
Anup Sastry killing it, as always! - I'm very excited what Lango contributes to the Monuments sound in the future
Can’t stop listening to this song. So stoked for the new album now! Good job Monuments
YES! looking forward to this! The Amanuensis is one of the best album of the genre. Pretty hyped!
yall need to give OLLY STEELE some credit.
That midrange is not prominent enough in the guitars for me. Having trouble hearing John Browne.
So when the album comes out i can totally adjust that in my eq on the phone.
Its because they chose ax fx over kemper saying its more dynamic lmao
This has been the same issue since album one.
Keep in mind UA-cam butchers audio
the fastest tempo of all monuments songs! not bad. Miss the brady snare from the previous records. Chriss vocals remind me more of his performance in his previous band ever forthright. RIP
FINALLY! Brings the heavy and the smooth! Sounds amazing!
Goseebump for song , so beatiful music and vocal
Listening especially to that song make me miss Chris.
Holy hell this song makes me want to drive into oncoming traffic. So brutal
Holy shit 3:26.... Can you say metal?? That gave me unbelievable chills....
My happiness has been restored on this very day
People don't seem to realise how much of a ballache this song is on guitar lol
Dont get me wrong, monuments are probably one of my favourite bands.
But, are my speakers or the guitar is not as defined/tight as it used to be? Really i can barely hear what the heck is happening behind the voice. :/
Monuments is a fantastic band, england always is quality, greetings from chile 🇨🇱 👍🏻
This is what ive been waiting for🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Monuments is the best band of Djent, John Browne is a fantastic guitarist. 👊👊
Where’s the guitars at?
Are you deaf?
Considering the guitars for Monuments are usually quite a focal point of the band and their sound in general, seems a very drum and vocal heavy mix.
Barely audible on a phone speaker
1:47 - 1:50
on a LIFE BOAT you'll FIND DEATH
(That riff underneath) SICK!!!!
IKR 🔥 i just cant understand why they didnt go with.....haunted vessel just like the one - INSIDE YOUR HEEEAD! Its kinda "bumpy" other way.... mabye just me but cant wait for album I long time fan. Peace
FINALLY YOU GUYS ARE BACK!!!!
I really love your musical production on this song. Sounds amazing. Congratulations Monuments!
P.s. cannot wait for entire album!
I luff it awfully terribly. Sounds great guys!
Soooooo good
Well I can hear the guitar for the last 20 seconds
Im glad everyone here went to school for music..... Good stuff bros!!
Still excited for the album, but definitely underwhelmed with this track.
Just one of the several Djent bands out there
2:55 makes me think of Ever Forthright. Looking forward to the album very much!
Love Chris' vocals
OMG, i'am too late for this bands, bangerrrss
Love it just wish I could hear the guitar!
Metal Vapes approves! Awesome, guys! \m/
Dem 2010 Periphery vibes..
Amazing track, gimmie the album now!
Can barely hear the guitars. But in general it's a pretty groovy song. Can't wait for the album
Nice! Looking forward to this album!
Damn, this just made my day
Holy shit. This was exactly what I needed today. So ready for the new album!
Love you guys ! Cheers from slivovica guy,.. you know 😉
Good stuff. Can't wait for the album.
Aside from the guitars being a little low in the mix, I think the drum mix is far better/tighter sounding. This album is about to kick so much ass.
Thank you guys love u all #Djent come to Brasil!!! Pleaseee
absolutely ridiculous! Probably gonna be album of the year for me! :D
I still want to hear those tracks from the recording videos!
I don't get the hate I saw for the song, maybe Facebook has turned into a negative space or maybe I'm surrounded by the wrong people but this song is one of the best thing I've heard and I've been listening to the song since it was out and it gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it!
Anup's drumming on this is absolutely monstrous
this song was Daniel Lango, read the description
@vicibanzio nah it was Anup he did session drums for Phronesis. Daniel was probably their live drummer at the time. Read the description again
soo good
Ohhh man.. i even got chills on my face! ♡
Ohh Man incredible work!! All negative responses to this track are because I think folks are less familiar with Olly's writing style compared to Johns, and from what I understand Steele had a much bigger influence on this album in comparison to the Amanuensis(although the intro feels like its straight from Fluxconduct). Wooow woow , yes yes !!! Beautiful !!!
God damn. Also I need a shirt of that design
Wow finally something new
I don't feel the soul that was encapsulated in Amenuensis is really in this song, but let me be objective about this:
The song WAS good, it was definitely good, but I really heard a lot more influences from other bands than I heard of signature Monuments. I really felt a Meshuggah vibe in the beginning that went straight into this weird transition to a Breaking Benjamin style chorus. That was ultra weird, but not bad. The biggest problem with this track is all the core-y elements they decided to incorporate, and it felt a lot less groovy than the Monuments I know.

well... this clearly deserves a "Like"... nice work dudez!!
Hell yes. Loving it.
This sounds tight.i don't understand the hate cuz when a band releases a single it's usually a single.i have high hopes for this album and anything John Browne writes is amazing.you all need to peep his other band Flux Conduct with Renny from forever never.Browne is a writing machine and never disappoints.
Finally! Love it, guys!
That last riff, yum.
wow i like it i have admit the mixing is different the guitars are normally chunky i still cant wait to hear more thou
This definitely sounds like Friend for a Foe --Chris' old band. Same exact structure to the songs, and they even used the vocal skipping (1:14).
Banger! Stocked for the album indeed!
Yesssss this album is gonna be sickk
now we need playthrough videos for every instrument
the final breakdown is so fucking insane
The vocal line in this song changes the way this whole song sounds. It’s so well done that even the generic chord progression sounds different! Can’t to hear the rest of the album!

So pumped to hear the rest of the album \m/
This is effing fantastic. Thank you
Sick
great to have new music... just wish Century Media had waited, It doesn't sound like a final mix :) we have such expectations
LOVE IT!
This is one of my instant new fave songs
Really like the production though the guitars is slightly low in the mix for my taste, but are the drums programed or something? Love the riff and vocals on this one!
