However these bristles are not hair, they are made of chitin (the thing that makes up the exoskeleton of invertebrates) and they are likely used to help it navigate across the sea floor. Next you will probably notice it's face, though calling it a face isn't exactly accurate. It's entire face is taken up by it's mouth which is a retractable proboscis, a mouthpart used for sucking up nectar in butterflies and moths, but these guys use them to eat small fish. Also last fact about them, they are actually quite big. They can get up to 20cm long (around 8 inches) which is concerningly large. I'm no 1-1 expert but a lot of people put the hidden 1-UP one block lower than it's supposed to be, the space below it should be the same height as the pipe to its left. Also, I haven't seen many people care about accurate decoration placement, which is fair because the only placeable decoration in SMM that was present in 1-1 is the bush, but in SMB1 the bushes came in varying lengths while in SMM they're stuck to one fixed length and aren't even on the right grid alignment. The only other background decorations in 1-1 are the clouds and hills, but those are fixed to the background and are in a completely inaccurate pattern and are hardly even aligned to a grid, so there's literally nothing that can be done there. The trees are also placeable decorations but those only appear in later levels in SMB1, not to mention there is no tree in the original game that's only one tile tall, but there is a fence tile that isn't present in the ground theme but rather as a replacement for the bush in the sky theme for some reason. Super Mario Maker is actually stuffed to the brim with tiny yet infuriating little inaccuracies beyond just gross misunderstandings of palette limitations- there's annoying drop shadows, faded backgrounds, the occasional non-pixellated sprites such as the zigzag at the end of SMB3 levels, numerous particle effects and even the animation that plays when something fails to spawn on screen, the pipes all being weirdly ever so slightly thicker than their original games for some unknown reason- but worst of all probably is the blatant use of rotation and scaling, neither of which the NES or to a lesser extent the SNES had any sort of capability of performing. The SNES did have extremely limited capabilities of doing those, but never to the extent seen in SMM. I understand this was all done because, objectively, if they legitimately tried to adhere to the visual limitations, it simply wouldn't look appealing, but that doesn't mean it's going to go unnoticed.
