Increasing sentencing for knife crime means nothing, the judges don't sentence people anywhere near the limit now. There needs to be minimum sentencing now, how long will it take for these guys to get this.
Agreed. Manditory Minimums are overtly and intentionally oppressive, discriminatory, and frequently abused.
But that doesn't mean ALL Manditory Minimum Sentences in other Nations *have to be, or will be* oppressive, or abused.

Typical of Kenny to look to Britain's broken justice system for solutions. The solution combines delivering a Republic that provides education and career opportunities. Hard working folks are too busy paying bills to crime. There will always be gurriers and "bad actors" in society. Better trained, equipped and more gardaí is the solution. And tougher laws and sentences to deal with youth crime. Not a courts' system of revolving doors, slap on the wrist and perpetual probation. And build a "crimes will be harshly punished" deterrence module into the primary and secondary level education system. Right now the criminals, more of them armed, are running the show and winning.
Publish the nationalities of those carrying knifes.

What is it with these politicians, they have a desire for making every bad situation worse deliberately, and then trying to put things in place to deal with it.
Automatic revoking of status and or citizenship..deportation for non nationals, if under 18 tharn whole family deported...have to nip in the bud..and for all oud own full sentences..

Should be 15 years but in a cold dark place . No early release and no money for state solicitors. Certain crimes should be mandatory no quarter given. People who dont pay their TV licenses can be referred on to the system so the lads can make a few bob on that. Also people should be allowed to carry weapons if they have no criminal records and have the proper training. The state could make a few bob on that aswell so everyone will be happy moving forward.
Sentences in IRL for all types of crimes are way way way too leniant. Suspended sentences handed out for serious crimes too is a joke here.
Minimum sentences makes much more sense than increasing the maximum. Been saying we need more prisons for 20 years. Need the spaces first.

I get that there are crimes being committed by people with knives. I also know that the vast majority of people have knives for reasons other than crime. Im a knife and swordsmith in Ireland. I produce high end pieces costing hundreds or thousands of Euro each and I can promise you no criminal is going to carry one of my pieces for a crime. They're too expensive and noticeable to risk. The vast majority of knife crime, as shown by the photos in this video are kitchen knives. You cant ban kitchen knives. People need to be educated about knives because we've lost our knife culture. It's not that long ago that a boy or girl would be given a knife by about the age of 7. Taught how to use it as a tool. Taught how to use it safely. Taught that it is a tool and not a weapon because it is a tool. You dont walk into your kitchen and get scared at all the weapons you have there. Yes they can be used as a weapon but so can a spoon if you do it right.
Yes it worked in London, just look at the knife crime statistics there, and the type of people using knives, we are only a couple of years behind them.
When was the last time you saw state security the S.S. stop and search a non irish person.

Not many agree with me but a proper knife is great for home defence. Come to think of it, I've never found anyone to agree with me on this but I just like a solid, well made tactical knife.

@@punchy1325 have you heard about pesticides? I don't eat any fruits skin and especially not apples. I confirm I use my teeth for the peeled apple. I don't see why we should be punished to carry a small knife just because some are twisted/mental.....

Almost certainly not gonna happen unless you're flashing it around. Having it in bag for picnic or beach food is recreational use.
