Just a short introduction to my Clio - why I bought it and a few of its quirks. If people want to see more then I'm sure we can do further videos in the future!
As always, great video henry. You should totally do more videos on it.
Here's an idea. Gather all of the presenter and told them to bring their car. And let them swap and review each other car. Would be fun content. I've been dying to see you and Alex on the same film
Yasss! I love my 2005 clio :) The 182 is my dream.
Wanna see your MK2 Escort in action!
Also, yes, so much fun! The original headlight covers do cloud over after a few years, but my replacements haven't had any issues and are still crystal clear after five years, so I think it's an issue with the original part but not the campus/later replacements.
A guy who drives supercars for a living... drives a clio. Respect buddy.
It says a lot about how enjoyable hot hatches are :)
Its not that uncommon, i mean chris harris has a 205. I think if you really like driving theres something nice about cars which you can drive at the limit on the road
felix crab - yep. It's the old saying it's more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow. Most serious car journalists can appreciate highly engineered quick cars, but they tend to say that lower powered cars with skinny tyres that you can thrash and chuck about are more fulfilling.
voice of reason The amount of commitment required depends on how stiff the rear anti roll bar is, also short wheelbase cars rotate very quickly once the back end starts going, so you’ve got to be quick on the draw with your throttle inputs and counter steering.
@@Jonathan_Doe_ and equally important not overreact on the counter sending it back the other way! my mr2 taught me a lot about countersteering.
Here's an idea. Gather all of your presenter and told them to bring their car. And let them swap and review each other car
rockzs74r that is a fantastic idea
would love to see that
Great idea !
Great idea! I'd love to see that
Yes, that’d be fantastic
That cheeky little slide in the bend.
Minty goodness.
This is exactly how I treat my 182. Good tires, brakes, suspension. Never washed, don't care about dents or scratches. Beat it like it owes me money
LynxAdvert Only way to own a sporty Renault, really.
Who cares about looks, squeeks and rattles, just toss me that corner, please! 😎🏁
Love that you feel that way on a regular car. Too many strung up personalities in the car industry
Regular car? It's a tiny car with a 2.0. The hp-to-weight ratio is so dope.
@@weetikissa Think he's meaning something that's cheap, affordable fun for anyone. There's a lot to be said for not having to spend more than a couple of grand to fit the bill better than the vast majority of stuff.
@@weetikissa hp-to-weight and also the weight itself. It's a 1100 kg lightweight, compared to modern fat cows with 400 kg more weight to lug around corners. Plus you get great visibility, decent trunk and back seats.
To me it's the best allrounder for daily, shopping, weekend road trips and track day fun.
I miss old Renaults like the Clio 182
buy one
2 grand gets a mint one
Quite simply Henry is the best reviewer on UA-cam 👌🏻
Fear Monger I agree
Since i started watching first Chris Harris, and recently Henry Catchpole, suddenly i don´t miss Clarkson & co at all..! I ´ve watched a few episodes of GT and just got tired..it´s the same concept as TG 10- 15 years ago and its not fun anymore, GT feels hoplessly dated and lame. Its so refreshing to watch actual, intelligent car reviews delivered in style, with personality, without BS and aimed at actual car-interested people! I´m new to Carfection but i already love the channel.
Absolutely adore RS Clios, especially before the MK4 when they were still N/A and manual.... Some say you need to own an Alfa to be a true petrolhead but in reality, you need one of these.
My 172 is still the best car i have ever owned.
Well said! i have equally as much fun in this as my 911
These are fun, but there’s just something about Alfa twin sparks... I like the busso v6 Alfa’s too, but the twin sparks have that instant response and that gruff tone to them.
They’re the closest things I’ve found in a daily drivable car to a bike experience wise, and I think it’s because they really nailed the gear ratios, the pedals are always perfect for heel toeing in Alfa’s, and they tend to fit really quick ratio steering racks.
@@Jonathan_Doe_ if i would buy a alfa, it would rather be a busso v6 .but o well alfa's are cool cars.
French real petrol head have Renault sport. Big community in France
Sorted the lights on my sister’s 182 using the 3M kit and can of polyurethane lacquer. Took about two hours. She can now see where she’s going in the dark. That it freshens up the front is also very welcome.
Great little cars - had one in the family for 9 years, and whenever I drive it, it puts a smile on my face!
I had a 182 Cup for 7 years. Was brilliant.
I also had a Trophy and kept it 6 months.
Morale of the story - a regular 182 with Cup chassis will do the job just fine and a lot less money!
Maybe, but the Trophy gives you the potential for future price appreciation.
000GunterGabriel000 you’ll be worried about driving it like a hot hatch though. The beauty of the normal ones at the mo is they are buttons so you can flog them senseless and not worry one bit!
Years back I traded my (cup) RS Twingo in for an RS Megane.
Don't get me wrong - the megane was epic (2011, so the model after the one with 'the arse') but god I regretted it. To this day I miss my Twingo. It was the Stormtrooper one (white with black alloys). I sincerely hope somebody out there is having a grand old time in it.
runrabbitrunracing Why would you get rid of the Trophy?
Drazen Budis wasn’t worth the money. Made £1k. Bought a 197 for half the price. Much prefer it - tried a 197 R27 and felt more special, better damped, faster through the bends and had all the added practicality. Not sure I’d bother with a Mk2 again.
The best part of the video for me is how honest it is. Henry isn't making any excuses, he just loves the car, so for whatever it does or doesn't do, it's just fine. That's what I see as honest. Very cool.
Only car I've ever bought new was a 2002 RenaultSport Clio 172 Cup, and boy, was it a fun car.
Sure, it had plenty of warranty claims, which thankfully Renault never quibbled about, but when it was 100% it was awesome.
Great review Henry, you encapsulated these cars very well 👍🏻
I like seeing you review the more 'attainable' cars too. Thanks Harry! More of this!
Raphael Bittner that’s Henry... Harry’s the one with the Trophy!
Ahhh I'm such an idiot. My apologies, Henry. I'm constantly switching between Harry M's and Henry C's channels - UA-cam's best - that's why!
Had one for many years, old school analogue fun like the good old Mk1 Golf GTI. Wish I kept them both.
Ive owned a fair few cars now, and my old black clio 182, sticky steering-wheel and all, is the only one i truly miss.
listening to Blink 182 in a Clio 182 = 2000's
Ah yes. Can't believe I'm actually starting to miss the 2000s...
Get yourself one of these and an MX-5 and you're set. Always love these videos, I still go back to the one on Drivetribe about Jethro's 911.
You come across as a very humble nice natured person Henry. The type of person everyone wants in their group of friends. And not embarrassed to show what you drive personally. 👏👏
LOVED THIS VIDEO! I love seeing the cars that a reviewer actually owns and loves, perhaps a future video on viewers cars.....
Recently done something similar whilst I wait for something special which has been delayed somewhat. I've bought a Fiesta ST150 and it's made be realise you don't have to spend mega money to have fun in a car. This one is bringing plenty of smiles which is what it's all about :)
Just when you think this channel cannot get any better! It is truly an amazing car Pound for lbs. Had the pleasure of meeting @HenryCatchpole at Luftgekühlt at Bicester Heritage and its wicked to see we have the same car!
That smile at the end... That is what loving your car is all about!
My day was cloudier than the headlights of that Clio, but this guy with his passion and genuine smile had me taking a step back and thinking about the good in this life
Makes me miss my 182 - I remember that quietly satisfied happy feeling as you giggle to yourself in 2nd gear :D
Awesome to see that you can translate the love of driving into even the humblest of cars!
I would love to see more episodes on attainable enthusiasts machines that most of us drive everyday!
I own a 172 RS and every single detail with comfort, little noises here and there, poor noise isolation, and the "cheap" interior is forgotten the moment I realize that I'm full of smiles every time I hop into the car even for a small ride. It's just an amazing car to love. Cheers mate. Greetings from Mexico. :)
I am soo jealous right now. Would love to have a 182 or 172. Those and 1st gen Mini Cooper S.
Really enjoyed that video - simple, yet effective.
Been waiting for this video for ages! Made me want one more
My dad had the 1.4 l 16V and it was perfect for the city and mountain roads, compact, great visibility and lots of fun.
Great car.
Love the 172 and 182, it is such an honest little car- punches well above its weight in terms fun factor! More vids please!
Mister Catchpole, you got a good way to still appreciate every cars you drive, having this one as a daily
We need to see more of this please.
This is a nice change of pace. But normally i want the unique and special this isn't it
A friend of mine had a 182 Trophy, with a Miltek Exhaust... sounded angry and went like stink!!
Great fun cars!
I feel the same when i get into my dc2 integra type r after driving the german exec car. Its recaro bolsters are wearing, its got no ac, radio etc but it feels great to drive.
Hang on to your DC2.
@@MuadDib1402 had it for 14 years reckon its a keeper 👍🏼
Please do a comparison test between your Clio and the V6 Clio Renault Sport from that era! That would be epic!!!
Petrol genuinely flows through his veins...great review..great car.. I loved my Renault 5 Turbo and Clio 182 ...sold them both as I reached maturity...so excited to say I purchased a 5 Turbo last weekend and whilst it needs a lot of refurbishment and money spending in 2019 I have a massive smile on my face, and as I can now afford to have a small collection am looking for a Clio to join my cars....
Really tempted to get one of these as a toy! Now that I know you own one, I think I definitely need to get one!
*heads immediately to Autotrader...
I did as well, but for a clio v6... Which I can't afford anytime soon...
Head to the RS Clio Facebook group...Plenty of well looked after examples come up for sale on there...£2k max gets a very good one.
In Portugal, the asking price for this car is about 12k euros xd
@@paddy.r.l4791 V6 is grossly overrated. Yes, that sound and engine vibration is unforgettable, but driving is is like going for a walk with a madman - you never know what he's going to do to you. Clio Villiams, 172 and 182 IMHO were the best affordable hot hatches. In Latin America it reincarnated in Sandero RS. F4R is stupidly simple and thus great engine.
@@janisvaskevics93 agreed. They aren't even that quick either. Over priced and they break down .. a lot.
Rather have my phase 1 172 any day.
I'm delighted that you love your car. I hope you're going to do a video about your favourite sofa next.
Spot on! Have the same feeling about my old 172. Everything needs changing in that car and it is not my daily drive anymore because of lack of comfort, but it is that feeling, I get when I drive that car that makes me not want to get rid of it. It is a genuine pocket rocket.
Google Snappy 182 Steering wheels. Does lovely OEM looking retrains. Had one on the Trophy. Also Royal or Royale will come up - seem good too
Love it. Had 7 renaultsports over the years, including 2 x 182 trophies, perfect little play things
Delightful thank you.
Carfection, Catchpole, Clio 182! - Perfection! 👍👍👍
The perfect daily car format, I think. Small, light, front wheel drive, wheels on the corners, 2door hatchback, tyres with some sidewall for better ride. NOT lowered, because speed bumps. Preferably no larger than a mk1 Golf. Mine is a 2008 Polo GTI, but this little Clio is perfect too.
Magnificent! ❤
Awesome video as usual (feel like a broken record saying that). Would love to see more!
I had a 182 with cup packs for a while. Excellent little motor. I liked the RS brand so much I eventually bought a Megane 265 Cup. Also superb fun.
Had a (very similar) 172 Phase 2. Beautiful dark blue paint, the optional OZ Racing grey wheels that were also on the 182 Trophy. I should have never got rid of it. Awesome car.
I'd love to see more of these honest real world reviews! Cheers Harry!
i used to have one... such a great car to drive, so agile and fun.
I warmly remember my 2005 182 Cup (racing blue) I had in Queensland Australia.....lovely car !
I had a 182 in this same colour from brand new (‘04 plate) and did 125,000 miles in it in just under 4 yrs. It never missed a beat and I loved every single mile I drove in that car. 👍😊
I had a black 2001 Clio 1.4 Alize, loved it.
Look at him, talking about his car. You can tell he actually loves it! 😊
More content, please. Would love to see the dampers upgraded and what difference it makes. Maybe a coating on the wheel? Amazing how cheap this is to insure too (for someone middle aged like me at least).
Great cars the 182s and increasing in value , fortunately still got my Black Gold one all nicely tucked away for those rare sunny days
My first car. I still love to bits.
Cracking write up. catches it brilliantly.
We all want more content like this!!
I think I now understand why I really enjoy Catchpole’s reviews so much more than any other automotive journalist’s. Just imagine the psychic whiplash you get from driving a McLaren or Bugatti to a Renault Clio.
Well done! My 1st car was a 172 , most fun I ever had in a FWD! Lift-off oversteer on demand 😬
Loved my 182 you hit the nail on the head, they are just fun!
You can have the steering wheel retrimmed for about £200 worth every penny
Had a few of these, brilliant cars. On the lookout for a clean low mileage 172 cup
This proves you don't have to have a lot of money to have a fun car. Well done. I really loved the 3 wheel action around corners.
There's something truly fascinating about Henry Catchpole driving around the most advanced and fastest cars on the entire planet, and then at the end of the day, hops back in his Clio 182. Adds to the mystique, really.
Been doing UA-cam videos on mine for 2 years on here, love it! 👍🏻 And I’ve owned my clio 182 for 5 years now. You’re spot on you can’t beat it for the cost and how fun they are.
How is reliability considering their age now? Would love to have one.
debbie peter got to watch out for gearbox issues. Belt history is always important to get, and watch out for the classic French electrical issues 🤪 still have mine now on my channel, just got in back out!
My 182 has just ticked over 118k miles and is still going strong!
I've owned a 172 ph2, a 197 F1 and now have a 220 Trophy. Loved my 172 to bits and out of the 3 I've owned its the One that I spent the most time cleaning and polishing. Also felt insanely powerful for the size of the car where as the 197 and 220 whilst obviously quick, especially the 220, just don't have that same immediate brute force feel that the 172 had. I remember once virtually keeping up with a BMW 130i off a roundabout and down a dual carriage way. Awesome little cars and for the cash nothing else comes close I would say
Loved it!
I had a 182 in petrol blue. I think they only made 29 in that colour. Absolutely loved it.
Magnificent
Great video. More vids like this please. I'm sure you want to steer away from some of the modern youtubers but if you want to review a yellow Megane R26 (or Focus RS or S60R) , let me know.
Amazing car, the fact you can pick these up for just over £1000 and have that much fun in them, a right of passage for any petrolhead!
Had a little mess around with one of these the other day,I was in my astra Vxr, In the corners it was quick man !! even as we got onto the straight road it wasn't slow, it was quick. It was only when I got to the end of 3rd gear I started to overtake him,and even then we had to slow for traffic lights. so these Clio's seem to be a "perfect little street racer"
Love this Clio and love my 182!!
I’ve had my 182 for 2 years now and it gets driven 9 times to 1 over my evo these days, even though the evo is very much a bloody good road car on comfortable Ohlins and responsive turbo. Clio 182 the most fun I’ve had on the road for sure. Will never sell.
I wish we had these in the US. Evo magazine and Henry in particular have given me such a respect for hot Renault hatches.
Reminds me of my old Suzuki Swift Sport. Not as fast as your Clio but amazing fun on anything twisty. Fantastic controllable oversteer.
Had a 172 for 6 years, sold it nearly 10 years ago. Still miss it.
I’ve just got one to go with my megane rs. Great little cars! Your wheel looks new compared to mine, and mine has only got 80k on the clock!
Yeah it is all right, I wouldn't mind one myself. Nice Video.
Love it.
I loved mine, the hydraulic steering on fast bends especially. But that lack of electric assistance made it hard work in the city, and the reason I sold it.
Great to see you driving a car even I could afford!
Love the genuine real world review.
Thanks.
I imagine you don't think twice about going to the supermarket and parking wherever.
Imagine the stress if you only had a DB11 to get that pint of milk...
If the steering wheel is getting a bit gunny, we would use an orange cleaner (Australia) , which is the sort of cleaner that removes adhesive off plastic without damage.
You will have removed the buildup and be back to normal.
If the wheel vinyl is braking down, a steering wheel cover is the answer.
Good man Henry
Loved my 182. Perfect for UK roads.
I've been in some pretty fancy cars in my time, and I feel the same way about my little Swift Sport. There are plenty of things I could criticise about it, but the bottom line is it's great fun to drive!
Hot hatches from that era were awesome! Just pure driving pleasure, faster you drive, more you enjoy!
Couldn't agree more.
That is not what I expected you to drive as a daily driver, but it is great!
Enjoyed that 👍🏻
Nice to see you own one. My 172 is lovely and wouldn't sell it. Nice little video.
Funny you say it's not as well built as a Honda (known for build quality) that's almost 20 years newer (where technology and robots have upped the game)
That is the most I've ever heard Catchpole complain about a car, and yet, he owns it, drives it like he stole it and loves it dearly. Respect, friend!
Had a 182 Trophy, proper little old school hot hatch.
Mine was exactly the same as this without the exhausts and had it from new for 5 years. Apart from my old Mk1 106 Rallye it's the only car I miss
I almost thought you turbo charged the damn thing when i heard that whistle noise in the opening!
The good thing about that Clio 182 is that you can have fun and chuck it about without worrying about repair cost.
I took ownership of a 2001, 143k mile 172 last Sept. Was my Dad's for 17 years (1st owner), it's got issues for sure, but the engine and chassis are pretty tight, still pulls to 7200 and love the gear shift light that comes on high 6s. I went to this from my BMW M135i (owned for 4 1/2 years) but lack of miles, around 25 per, meant the BMW was wasting away.
Have to agree with Henry, as a daily driver to poke about in, cheap motoring without all the mods cons they are superb!
Parting shot, my folks are in their mid 70s and until last Sept were nipping about in the Clio 172 Sport. Not bad, not bad at all !
