The first dish with the green vegetables that Naomi got is a gourd, also known as bitter melon or ampalaya in Filipino, which has many health benefits. Enjoy your stay in the Philippines! The second dish that Naomi got and you thought pork and buttery was kare-kare (pronounced as ka-reh ka-reh), which is beef with peanut sauce and is eaten with shrimp paste.

Do not shy away and always ask if you want yo know and be informed, most Filipinos can speak English but mostly have a hard time understanding because of different accents. I think they can understand better if you kinda speak slower and clearer, because we are taught in school to pronounce each syllables of every word literally, and not dropping any letters like the slang way of speaking.

@@romulotalaue In the U.S., we "commonly" call it bitter melon and not bitter gourd. And please refrain from being a smart Alec or being condescending, as different countries call it either bitter gourd or bitter melon. Either way, they are from the same family.

    Ampalaya ,- bitter gourd,
    Lutong bahay - home cooked
Mami - Chicken or beef noodle soup or Ramen.
130 pesos for 2 meals plus coke is a good deal.
At the eatery at the end, Naomi had Kare-Kare with shrimp paste on the side.
And I guess the other food is menudo. And the soup is Sinigang soup.

you guys are correct, the vegetable dish that you ordered is indeed bitter gourd or ampalaya in the local language. you have to keep in mind, most Filipino foods are conceptualized to be paired w/ rice. that's the reason why viands usually have strong tastes w/c the rice will temper and blend with.

If you guys get a chance to visit Tagaytay Highlands its a great place to cool down March-April. The other place is Baguio city (located in the Mountains) it get temp varies from 10-26deg. during the day. If your not used to high heat these are good retreat for the coming months although i've heard its alot cooler there in Manila due to El Nino.

Saw a couple of your videos and wow, you guys showed refreshing level-headedness amidst the most chaotic time in Cebu & even Manila. Yeah both places celebrated different religious fiestas in January. Things should go smooth sailing from now on. Time to head to the beaches, go snorkling, canyoneering, etc.!
Later, when you head back to Manila, visit the modern places too like Greenbelt, & the Mall of Asia complex-- where Germany won the basketball World Cup last September.
Manila by itself is dense with 2 million population but if you take Metro Manila as a whole which is composed of 16 cities, the population is only 13 million. There are around 25 modern business districts in this National Capital Region.
The kare-kare that Naomi had is usually beef, not pork. Oxtail actually, which makes it expensive. The sauce is not curry but peanut sauce. You mix the dish with rice and put a little shrimp paste per spoonful.
Filipinos eat with spoon & fork by using the backside of the fork to push the food into the spoon which delivers the food to the mouth.

Hi guys! Welcome to our country Philippines. I enjoyed watching your first day blogging in the University Belt in Manila; however, there were few situations that I felt like you could have enjoyed your lunch to the fullest. That shrimp-paste in the small saucer is a sauce for the Kare-kare ( like pork stew, or could have been beef stew that’s cooked with “fresh peanuts”, original version, but nowadays its cooked with peanut butter. This Kare-kare’s original recipe should really taste kinda flat, that only peanut flavor should be dominant in the flavor of this stew and this is where the shrimp-paste gets into the picture. You take a “little bit “ of shrimp paste and add it on the pork stew or beef stew and then add rice every time you scoop with your spoon, having the shrimp paste to add saltiness and flavor on the stew and the rice at the same time balances the flavor of every scoop. This manner or application of eating Filipino dishes is applied most of the time. Main dish, in this case Kara-kare with shrimp-paste + Rice. Or the other one, Adobo( the pork with liver) + Rice. Proportionality for Filipinos would be 3/4 spoon of rice + 1/4 spoon of Kare-kare or whatever food of your choice is.
Last, if you are not certain about the type of food you want to order , always ask the person on the other side of the counter to explain and let you know about the food of your choice, but if the person on the other side of the counter freezes or seem to ignore you, you can ask them to ask for somebody in the house that can explain for her. Most “Carrinderia helpers” are at times from a different provinces and is not equipped with communication skill; you’d be surprised that they themselves could not speak our native tongue as they could be from a different island who could not speak Tagalog but their provincial dialects or local language that they speak in their province. So, do not be shy to ask the owner or tell the helper to ask the owner for assistance. This will make your experience far more helpful and informative. I will be looking forward to your next vlog and good luck to your venture in the Philippines! Stay safe and always csrry your important belongings specially you are staying in a low star rate hotels; seriously!!!

33:00 It's refreshing to hear your perspective about Manila compared to other big cities. Like Pasig river in manila is not that different from the Thames in London in terms of cleanliness 😂 Traveling the world really changes your perspective on things. I no longer live there, but it holds a special place in my heart despite the horrendous traffic 😅 i always find it funny when people complain about traffic here in the US cause they have no idea what we have to deal with on a daily basis in Manila. Btw, that flag pole in Rizal park is Kilometer Zero for Luzon (?).. love how you just eat the food without knowing what's in there, like you judge the food by the taste and not by how it looks or any preconceived notions of the ingredients.. i can tell you've been eating quite adveturously when she was able to spot the banana blossom and the bitter gourd in those dishes..😊

I'm pleasantly surprised that you two know your food very much. Not a lot will know that what they might be eating is bitter gourd and indeed you're correct. That's sauteed bitter gourd, with onions, garlic, tomatoes and finished off with an egg. The dish with the liver is called Menudo. Mexico also has Menudo but it's not the same. Mexico's version is with beef tripe and garbanzos while Philippine Menudo has small chunks of Pork with potatoes, carrots and yes, liver. It's braised till fork tender in tomato sauce. The yellow dish is a bastardized version of Curry. Ours got lost in translation and thus eventually was called Kare-Kare. Also has yellow color like the curry but the Kare-Kare gets its yellow color from Annatto seeds and ground up peanuts. Nowadays, the peanuts rarely been used and in place of it is peanut butter.

You guys missed Fort Santiago, which is just a short walk from the Manila Cathedral. It's the most historic spot in Intramuros or the Walled City. Fort Santiago, being at the mouth of the Pasig River, served as the premier defense fortress of the Spanish Government. It became a main fort for the spice trade to the Americas and Europe for 333 years. It's now a beautiful park retaining some of its historic structures that was destroyed during the last world war. Also worth a visit is the newly-built river esplanade along the fort which has just opened to the public a couple of weeks ago.

When he said "ampalaya", I was thinking "Oh no. Not for the first thing you eat..." LOL At least you understand what it is. It is bitter gourd. And yes it's local price. A filling cheap meal around here costs around 1-5 US dollars. That's a good rule of thumb. For mid-level restaurants, expect around 5 to 10 USD. High-end restaurants, expect around 10 to 100 USD.
A tip: if you want to try Filipino food, go to actual restaurants. The Philippines is unique in Asia in that we do NOT treat street food as meals. Forget everything you know about Thai, Chinese, etc. culinary traditions. It's very different. It's closer to Indonesian or Malaysian cuisine, though again, we eat everything with rice and we eat a lot more pork.
The vast majority of our street food are SNACKS. Being extremely family-oriented, and the fact that our definition of "meal" almost always includes rice, most of us prefer to eat at home. If you absolutely want to try real street food as a meal, go for our noodles, that's pretty much the only street food we have that is actually a meal and most are distinctly Filipino (our noodle dishes are very different from neighboring regions as well). You can still try other kinds of street food, but they're more on the sweet side or rice cakes. Again, not meals.
The fact that we eat at home is also why you'll find that a lot of restaurants here serve foreign food or fastfood, things you can't cook at home, so that's what we go out to eat for.
But again, if you want Filipino food, look specifically for a larger restaurant. A carinderia (the most local kind of restaurant, "buffet"-type, like the one you were in) is okay, but go somewhere where there are lots of people, usually near markets and terminals. That means the food is great and are usually still hot. If not, find a mid-end to high-end Filipino restaurant, where waiters can also explain how food is eaten (some of them require you make your own sauce, some require specific mixing, almost all of them require that they be eaten with rice).

It's bitter melon or Gordon. Sautéed with onion, garlic, tomatoes and eggs. Normally spiced up with oyster sauce, salt and black peppers. Glad you guys tried it. God bless.

Sauteed ampalaya is what you've had for your first Filipino meal. In English that vegetable is known as bitter melon or bitter gourd🙂 That's a very simple dish, but many households cook it with pork or shrimps or both added to make the dish more tasty and flavorful😁
