    Fun fact, not alot people know, but the reason that triangle park in makati is shaped that way, is because that area used to be an airstrip, and the triangle area are where the towers were.

    51:10 really hit home. I'm a Filipino - Canadian, came to Toronto when i was 2, and lived in Toronto my whole life. Visited once when I was too young to really remember much and again right before Covid and got stranded for more than 2 years. During those years I really got to experience the real philippine culture, and spent a lot of time between Manila and the provinces of Bulacan. I noticed not a lot of vloggers cover Manila, and I don't blame them because why wouldn't you want to go to the beach? As a canadian who is also filipino, the most important memories were in manila, and seeing the disparities you mentioned, super eye opening and humbling. I'm glad you added that part in the vlog, seems like a lot of people do too based on the activity chart.

    a lot of foreigners do not know, and even a lot of locals get confused, but there's "Manila" referring to the city and the nation's capital, and "Manila" referring to Metropolitan Manila (Metro Manila), a collection of 16 cities plus 1 municipality, also known as the National Capital Region. fun fact#1: Makati is a city, not a District!
    Additionally, Metro Manila can be loosely divided into four areas, the northern metro manila area, the southern manila area, eastern metro manila, central metro manila areas.
    Why does this matter? because your experience and what you will encounter will vary substantially, each city and general areas have its own distinct vibes and attractions. For better or for worse, it sometimes feels like they are worlds' apart.
    it also helps a bit if you understand the history behind these places.
    (I was fortunate enough to live in or work in all four areas for most of my life so I can tell)
    Manila City has been the political, economic and cultural heart of the Philippines for most of its history, it was once called The Paris of the East, but it has been brutally devastated by the World War II. Add to this the fact that thru out 20th and 21st century, migration from the provinces has swelled its population to unsustainable levels, looking to change their fates and build their dreams. It is really a melting pot of anyone and everyone, but sadly Manila City's Infrastructure is having a hard time coping with the influx. This is an important context.
    The other 15 cities were towns that grew into cities as development spilled over from Manila the City.
    The cities in the north and center metro manila become mostly hubs of business and finance, transportation, government offices and media etc...
    Makati City and its CBD, and Taguig and its BGC, are famous financial centers and newly developed areas starting only two or three decades ago, as a result of the wave of development away from Manila the City. fun fact #2: BGC, Bonifacio global city, is not a real city; it's just a mixed used development district, within the City of Taguig.
    From Central Metro Manila (Manila, Makati, Mandaluyong, and parts of Pasig and Taguig), the urban development is spreading mostly to Southern Metro Manila (Pasay, Paranaque, Muntinlupa, parts of Taguig), because of less congestion, transportation and access to the Provinces of Southern Luzon (which have become the de facto capital of manufacturing and industrial parks.); this means new developments all over the south.
    Eastern Metro Manila and parts of South have become mostly Residential Areas, I hope you get the picture.
    SO............ in reality, you will get substantially different experiences and vibes depending on where you are in Metro Manila.
    this is a pet peeve I have with foreign vloggers and fellow Filipinos from the provinces bashing "Manila";
    Stepping into the heart of BGC, then saying that the entirety of Manila is very modern like in other developed countries or alternatively, stepping in the mean streets of Tondo, Recto or Divisoria , and saying all of Manila is a crime infested smoke polluted city.
    Metro Manila has all its different faces, for better or worse, it has historical tourist attractions, modern high rises, and amenities, it has laid back districts, entertainment hubs and you're also 0.50 to 1.5hr ride away from the beaches, waterfalls, resorts and wildlife from the Metro.
    you can explore it for day and days.
    this could get even longer, but that's it. I hope you get a picture and enjoy the Metro. hope this helps.
    Greetings from Calamba, Laguna!
    (fun fact #3: Cashless Transactions is growing here, we use the GCash App, and Debit Cards, since Filipinos don't like using credit if possible)
    (good job walking thru the streets of makati and manila, to show the actual sights and sounds)
    (I was watching thru the video as I was typing, and I'm glad you two took the time to google some of Philippines and Manila's History, and also had some realistic expectations of what to see in Manila, cheers!)

    • @pjc_deleon7290
      @pjc_deleon7290 7 місяців тому

      @@elprincep582 its a matters, #1 get your facts and education straight and rather trying to cover up your misinformation. Its all a google away. Yes, historically people from the provinces call Metro Manila including surrounding provinces Manila for lack of understanding back then before the internet, but that is not excusable anymore in the age of the google.
      #2 if you came from whatever province, you were from, is it alright if a people from NCR call you simply a probinsyano? Annoying or offensive is it? So people from the NCR have to learn to address people properly. So should people from provinces. After I left NCR, and lived in Los Banos right in the middle provincial Laguna, a 3 hours bus ride, and some idiots still call it Manila. Like wtf. Some of my old friends live in the foot of the mountains of Montalban, some idiots still call it Manila. Dude get google that thing.
      Yes you all call it Manila, due to lack of understanding and misinformation same way some people growing up in metro manila lump all of vismin up. Which are all wrong and inexcusable in this day and age.
      When I get sent to work in the provinces, I google the area, and refer to destination town appropriately. And I dont pretend its Ok to call all the towns surrounding it as CDO, Davao, Cebu, Zamboanga, Tacloban and iloilo one and the same. There's Minglanilla, there's Villanueva in Misamis, there's Sta Cruz Davao, Sibuco, etc etc as proper respect.
      Its NCR or Metro Manila, with 16 cities and 1 municipality.
      If you're going to various cities, refer to it as such. Quezon City, Makati City, Taguig City, Muntinlupa City.
      If you're referring to Manila the old City itself, NCR people refer to it as Maynila. Then there's surrounding provinces like Laguna, Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite and Rizal provinces.

No tourists coming to China town because there are vendors specially the food vendors contribute to the garbage out on the streets there. If is sad to hear from tourists comment on the smelly garbage filled estero as they crossed the bridge. Mayor Isko did well with the cleanliness campaign in Manila. FYI for y'all tourist coming here - Metropolitan Manila comprises 16 cities, including the capital city Manila while the 15 other cities used to be the suburb and manufacturing towns adjacent to Manila but later on became developed and elevated to cityhood. Makati City is different from Manila City - if y'all gonna reference Makati as a district of Manila, that's wrong. The correct way is Makati, Metro Manila.

    You both seem to be a good match (of opposites ü) but also funny. Always appreciate tourists who come to the Philippines with lots of historical interest in their backpockets.
    We have not lower than 120 and nearly 200 (187 at last data count) languages, not just dialects, Robert. (To note: a project of the Univ. of the Phil.'s Linguistics Dept. started COVID 19-related materials translated and by 2020 had 68 materials-languages and sub-dialects) which, as you can imagine, is a huge task. There are 10 major languages in use, Filipino among them. Tagalog is the regional language on which Filipino is based ü
    José Rizal's best friend, supporter and champion was Ferdinand Blumentritt, although German (Austrian), was born in Prague and lived and died in Leitmeritz (Bohemia)/ Czech town Litomerice (Czeh Rep.) where he visited Blumentritt. There is a Rizal Park in Litomerice as well, and 3 busts of him. Maybe if you pin your travel map to that part of your Czech heritage visit, it might have a different meaning for you. Anyway, safe travels and always bring not just extra soap, tissue paper but water! Cheers!

The difference is the slums you call in Philippines, people are happy with what they have and share what little they have. Need more research before assuming. I guess you have not travel much in Asia, you get shock easily and call things bad, horrible not meeting you Western standards. You are a traveler you are a visitor to the country open your mind on how other parts of the world do not match the European Weatern standards.

      I agree, there is lots of poverty in the western world now. We are from Toronto and there are many homeless encampments here and all over Canada and the US. We just make comparisons based on our own experience and where we are from, that is all.

    Southeast Asia is pretty advance in Modern Amenities like the Cell Phones that came out in the Philippines in 1992. The Motorola Micro-Tac. It is more dangerous in Dorchester, Massachusetts compared to Tondo or Manila. By the way, the smiles are endless. Have a great time. (My fav city is Cebu City).

    And here they below poverty line people are the ones who earns 10900pesos that's 200american dollars!! That's below poverty line here!! But that's the minimum wage of Vietnam and Indonesia!!! And the poor in the phil who earns 10900pesos a month is only 20percent of the population!!! Minimum wage Is 17000pesos!! For average pilipino!! The middleclass is growing here!! Actually the pilipino has more financial power than most neighbors!! Contrary to most people misconception!! The phil economy is growing by the average of 6percent for straight 20years now!! It's Bec of strong household spending!! While the neighbors economic growth is dependent of exports!! If export demand is weak their economic growth slows down!!!

    • @nocheckinbags
      @nocheckinbags  7 місяців тому

      Yes it seems to be the case in Philippines and many countries in the region, economies and middle classes are growing and things are getting better for people in general in SE Asia which is great.

      @@nocheckinbags just saying,the bridge you saw is the only infrastructure that china has funded in the whole phil!! Most of the big infra projects that are under construction now are not china funded!! The underground subway system under construction in manila now is 75percent loan from Japan!! 25percent funded by phil govt!! The new Manila international airport north of manila is funded by phil private corporation and the phil govt!! This airport will be the largest airport in south east asia and 2nd largest in the world!! They are building manyelavated train system in manila now!! And long haul train systems from north provinces to south provinces!! Funded by phil govt and loan from Japan!! They will built 3 35kilometers bridges that would connect island provinces funded by phil corporations and govt!! Just saying Bec only the negatives are being reported by western media!! Western media is bias against the phil!! That's the reason of phil negative perception on the western countries!!

      Philippines also have dynamic & world famous industries that can compete to the rest of the world such Jollibee, San Miguel Beer, Penshoppe, Bench apparel, Oushi, Potato Corner etc. that can help Philippines economy grow..those Filipino owned industries are invested in other countries world wide. And Philippines also have manufacturing major products export to other countries, in fact Philippines is one of the largest producer of Chip semiconductors on the Planet and one of the leading producer of electrical & electronic products on earth.
