      Hi Baie dankie ...This ws explained very well!!! Love your channel. I am a newbie 'editor'....I don't seem to be able to move my different Cam angles to setup for numbers edit?

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  3 роки тому

      Hi 🤙🏼 Glad you enjoyed the video 😊 That’s odd, it should work without needing to set anything else up. I would try going into your keyboard shortcut settings and resetting them to default to see if that activated the number shortcuts again. Let me know if that works 😊

      Stellar tutorial 🏆 Yes, there is a multi-angle edit I'd like to know how to do. I'm not using a separate audio recorder. Normally I do a 3 camera shoot (3 angles), so I import 3 video files. Angle-1 has the best quality audio. .... My Question: How do I switch between angles but always use the audio attached to angle-1 ?

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much! 😊 When you drop the full multicam on your timeline you can right click on it and set your Active Audio angle to angle 1 with the good audio. In your multicam window, make sure you have it set to only change the video angle and not the audio angle when you make cuts and then it will always keep angle 1 as your audio source 😊

      @@Brad_West One question I have is how to sync multi-cams after selecting favorite sections? For example, when I record and unboxing video, rarely do I get everything in a single shot and I need to select my favorite sections from the face & overhead shots. Is there an easy way to sync favorited sections from two clips recording the same shot? Hope this question makes sense.

    • @Brad_West

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  Рік тому

      You can open up the multicam clip and apply your individual luts to each angle. You can also try to color grade them to match better. I did a video about matching different cameras: ua-cam.com/video/w4zzIo9YHlo/v-deo.html

      @@Brad_West I'm trying to match footage from S5mII V log and G9 V Log L. The colors are similar enough, I was trying to adjust the exposure and brightness a bit because full frame vs micro 4/3s but as long as I have the exposure settings exactly the same or one F stop down and one level of ISO down with the G9, the footage looks close enough. Now, I am trying to match different interview locations with slightly different lighting, that is the real challenge. I have a 5600k light on the subject roughly at the same distsance away in each location, but the ambient lighting, I can't really control that. Do you have any video tips on that?

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  Рік тому

      @@kyleledotnet I don't have any videos specific to that issue, but what you'll want to try is to use a shape mask on the subject for the interview. You can then grade the inside mask (subject) differently from the outside mask (the background where the ambient lighting is different).
      At around 1:14 in this video: ua-cam.com/video/bfe15QsvCPo/v-deo.html I show the inside/outside using a color mask. The principle is the same, but you can use the shape mask. Hope that helps!

    Thanks for this crisp tutorial. I have started a 4 camera Multicam edit, each camera having more than 1 hour of recording time. Have transcoded to proxy while importing, and, I have this doubt: how to optimise the media after finishing the editing and before sharing the project?

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  2 роки тому

      Using the drop down in your view window you can set the playback options from proxy back to optimized media. Then I would do a color grade if necessary to try to match the camera angles. I would suggest doing that inside the multicam so you’re only grading 4 clips as opposed to each clip in the main timeline. Hope that helps 😊🤞🏼

    Question, if you place a marker on the clap sound on each clip. That should allow you to line up your audio dead on, correct? I know markers will all line up on time. If you move them to wherever the playhead is in your project.

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  3 роки тому

      Yes you can definitely use markers on each clap to line up the audio. That will work within a multicam clip but also without a multicam clip, if you’re just trying to manually sync a few clips on the timeline. 😊

    Great instructional video. If you were to record audio on a separate device, what format should you record in? Should it always be WAVE or can you use mp3 etc?

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  3 роки тому

      Great question Peter 😊
      MP3 would be fine but I would always recommend WAV files instead because audio is captured at a higher bit depth. The quality will be much better, especially if you are going to be adding a bunch of audio plugins like a denoiser, compressor or EQ for example. By recording WAV files you give those plugins more “data” to work with. Hope that helps 😊

    I have a question about multi-cam editing.
    A few years ago I shot a sporting event with two cameras. The main camera was a prosumer camcorder that recorded 4K video at 29.97 fps. The second camera was an iPhone, which recorded 4K video at 30 fps. While the difference between 29.97 and 30 fps is very slight, it's enough to cause one stream to drift gradually out of sync with the other.
    At the time I produced this event, I didn't yet know how to use FCP's multi-cam editor. So I just took the footage from the main camera and laid it on the primary storyline, and then I took the footage from the iPhone and laid it on top as a connected clip. I synced the two up using spikes of audio I could clearly see in the waveforms. Getting the two clips in sync was not that hard. But every 10 or 15 seconds, it would fall a frame or two out of sync. Since I didn't stay on one shot for more than a few seconds, this discrepancy wasn't obvious to anyone watching the finished edit, but only because after each cut of the video, I would nudge the connected clip to the right on the timeline a frame or two to get it back into sync in time for it being used for the next edit.
    I'm wondering how these differing frame rates would have affected my ability to put these two clips into a single multi-cam clip container so I could use FCP's multi-cam editing capability. I'm guessing I would have needed to convert the 30fps clip to 29.97 first before putting the two clips into one clip container. But would that even work? Since after all, once the fraction of a frame is gone, it's gone. I guess my question is simply this: How does the multi-cam function work of you've got two clips whose frame rates are fractionally different?
    Here was the final edit when I synced everything up manually,, which worked alright. But I've been hesitant to try this again without buying another camera that shoots in 29.97 to match the other one. This show is something I do strictly for fun, with a budget of $0.

    • @Brad_West

      That’s a tricky one. I’ve resolved a similar sync drift issue in the past by doing the following:
      Find a spike on the audio on both clips near the beginning and make a marker on both clips. Go to the end and find another spike and make markers on both clips again at the spike. On the 30fps clip, hit Cmd R to open up your retime editor and retime the clip until the markers at the end line up perfectly. Make sure the markers at the beginning still line up. That should fix the sync drift issue 😊👍🏼

    Great Video Brad, may i ask you how can i do a picture in picture with multicam? My Use case: i have a Microsoft Teams Recording, 2 Camera Live Recordings and one clean Audio file. I would love to switch between the presenter, Guests and the presentation. Thanks in advance!!

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  2 роки тому

      Hey Dennis! Glad you enjoyed it. I would drop the multicam clip on the time and then duplicate the clip on top of itself (using Alt + Click and drag) and make sure that they stay in sync with each other. Mute the audio on the top clip and scale it down and reposition it to get the picture-in-picture look you want. Then every time you want to swap angles, you can make a cut on both clips and change the angle from 1 to 2 on the main clip and from 2 to 1 on the PiP clip. When you change angles you might lose the scale and position parameters so you can copy the PiP clip where the scale and position is correct and then paste attributes using (Cmd Shift V) to the rest of the PiP clips on top of the main clip. Hope that was clear enough and that it helps 😄🤞🏼

    Your videos are really helpful, one question though: what should you do when you have footage with different frame rates? is 29,97 fps and 30 fps footage a problem or not notieable? what about 30 and 60 since its exactly the half? just slow down the 60fps footage by 50% to match the 30fps?

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  Рік тому +1

      In that case I would go with the lowest frame rate (29,97fps) and there shouldn’t be a noticeable issue with 30fps footage. If you’re syncing 60fps footage I wouldn’t slow it down in the multicam clip. FCP will play it back just fine on a 29,97 or 30fps timeline by just dropping every second frame. 😄👍🏼

    • @Brad_West

      When you’re in the multicam the blue speaker is just to monitor the audio, it doesn’t change the actual audio track. When you’re in the timeline however, you can right click on the multicam clip and select the audio angle to change it. Let me know if that helps?

      @@Brad_West And I guess my other question is what is the blue speaker monitoring for? Is it anyway syncing?

    • @Brad_West
      @Brad_West  3 роки тому

      So the little blue speaker is just to monitor playback within the multicam. It’s basically a way to listen to each track (or more than one track at the same time) while you are in the multicam. It doesn’t affect your edit at all.
      If you’re removing a section of the multicam in your timeline, it won’t affect sync. But if you mean, removing a section within the multicam clip it might affect sync. But it depends. Are both sides of what you want to remove currently in sync?

    Great tutorial, thank you. Is this as seamless as it looks when you're using a camera that can only record 30 minutes at a time and you have to stop/start when other cameras continue recording i.e. if you import all camera clips, one or more will have a second or 2 gap in recordings on that camera's timeline. Will FCPX detect that and pull those clips apart to account for this?

    • @Brad_West

      Thanks for watching Jack 😊
      Yes, FCPX will detect that and will keep that gap. FCPX will put each clip in a new angle when you create the multicam, so you can move all the clips from camera 1 to one angle and all the clips from camera 2 to another and then delete the empty angles to make your life easier. Hold down the shift key when moving the clips so that you don’t drag them out of sync 😊👍🏼
