My honest thoughts on the Haikyuu Movie

  • Haikyuu's showdown between Karasuno and Nekoma, "The Battle at the Garbage Dump" was recently released in theatres worldwide.
    It's received a brilliant amount of success, and I personally thoroughly enjoyed it.
    However as time went on, and I thought about it more and more... I couldn't help but feel frustrated.
    Sure, we got the boom jump and a whole bunch of other, super cool scenes, but SO much was cut from the film... just to save money?

    Apologies all, I know I said on the last video I'd make the next one an actual Kenma video, but I've not really had the time to sit down and focus on writing the script this week. I did also get a lot of requests for it, so even though I wasn't orginally planning to make this video I decided to go ahead and do so.
    Anyway, the video probably came off a bit more critical than intended, I still thought the film was INCREDIBLE, it's just annoying knowing what the potential for it could have been.
    Oh well, all we can do is pray they give the next one more runtime. See you soon for the Kenma vid!

      I have a bad feeling the studio will mostly see that a “standard” short runtime gave them more shows per day which equated to a better box-office run than whatever they may have projected. But one can surely hope. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

    Man, not showing the grandpa ukai backstory with nekomata, not giving nishinoya much credit for rolling again after realizing he was in front of asahi, not giving the bam jumps a more impactful sound effect when stuff like asahi’s spikes got a very powerful sound around the whole theater. It was amazing, but all these little things make me want to give it a 9/10

    i absolutely loved the kenma POV at the end, but one of the panels that really had an impact in the manga was kenma yelling "the ball hasn't dropped yet." His facial expression and lev's and kuroo's reactions really hit home kenma's true enjoyment of the match but in the movie, it was just a one liner that was glossed over during the POV scene. Really wished that one part got to be a scene but the POV scene was still great.

    As a former athlete, Haikyuu saved my career. The manga ended right before my senior year of college (last year of being a student-athlete), back then I thought I’d lose my identity once I retire. BUT Haikyuu taught me otherwise. Furudate taught me that there’s more to an athlete than their sport and it has opened my eyes that all the work I put in as an athlete won’t just fade away.
    Haikyuu is the reason I’m who I am now. It is my favorite manga/anime of all time. And I am genuinely scared to watch the movie since it is my favorite match of the series.

  • @pitterr5
    @pitterr5 23 дні тому +55

    huge rant incoming
    Its not even about the cut parts, even thought they obviously matter a lot. It’s about what haikyuu does the best and imo no other series has done it as good as furudate does in haikyuu. I’m talking about the build-up that leads to powerful and emotional moments, such as Tanaka’s cross shot or hinata receive back in season 4 or Tsukishima block on Ushijima in season 3. Everything combines for that, tempo, pacing, animation, angles and very important - music and sound design. And I’m a die hard fan of haikyuu both anime and manga, but the movie failed miserably here. These moments, when they’re properly done, are what makes you think about the movie for days and not want to let go these feelings that you felt during the watch time. The impact they have is crazy and people sometimes miss out on it, I’ve been going crazy after my favorite moments in the series, like the ones I mentioned before and couldn’t get them out of my head, but this movie just flew right through. It lacked the impact that it supposed to have, and I know they wanted to show the quick pacing of the game and how quickly it can just burst through the time but that wasn’t it. But still there’s many to praise as well, the animation was through the roof, it was action packed and it did not leave a room to breathe to show how fast-paced the game is and the last point pov from kenma was an incredible experience. It’s obvious that 80 minute movie simply can’t perfectly visualize over 30 chapters, that’s why it’s really sad they didn’t go for season 5. I feel like it would be a spot on 25 episodes season for nekoma and kamomedai with mujinazaka vs fukurodani game in between. I just hope that my favorite upcoming match won’t be butchered.

      I feel the same about it. I haven’t read the manga, but I felt that even a 10 episode season like against shiratorizawa would be better. • @e10gold
      @e10gold 22 дні тому +4

      Completely agree, build up was exactly what was missing which makes the big moments just hit less hard. However I think they adapted it as well as possible with the limited run time, if they tried to keep the same formula it would have failed horribly. Just a tough situation all around due to the decision to shove a whole match into a movie.

    • @xandervxdlol
      @xandervxdlol 22 дні тому +6

      I feel like it was just the situation the crew was put on. Im an anime only guy but I know my friend was telling me how this was one of the best games in the whole show and while the movie does a decent job of showing it (and the kenma perspective was goated ngl) , i feel like its missing those extra moments for you to soak in the moments. For example hinata finally being a good spiker (not just decoy and quick) was huge but they sorta skimmed over it. I definitely felt that sometimes the pacing was fast but I cant lie, I’ve been waiting 4 years for this movie (been watching since 2020) and its still really good. 8.5/10. Im going to have to read the manga now to experience it in all of its glory.

    Feels like I understand your frustration though. In Slam Dunk, Shohoku's penultimate Inter High match against Sannoh in the recent movie missed out some content from the manga too, including the personal feud between Rukawa and Sawakita, and Sakuragi's clutch moments which were only superficially explored. But many fans still enjoyed the movie.

  • @ejay1995
    @ejay1995 23 дні тому +27

    I absolutely agree on all of that! It was a phenomenal movie, but there's so much more they could've accomplished with it. Slowing down the pace to let viewers soak in the glory like the manga does would have cemented the scenes in our minds much more. The movie is great if you've read the manga because you already know the key moments and get to see it in moving action, but for anime-onlies, there's a lot they leave out or zoom through that they miss out on.
    However, I'm very happy they animated Bokuto and Kuroo switching hairstyles. That is one of my favorite panels in the whole arc. It's also very nice seeing how many manga to anime shot for shot frames there are. The animators really do try and keep the anime loyal to the manga the best they can. I was excited and thrilled leading up to watching the movie in theaters, and that feeling continued as it started. The destined battle was epic on the big screen.

    Completely agree, saw the movie in theatres, the intensity, speed and action was on point, especially the first person bit of Kenma. Though the stuff that got left out had me feeling sad, not because they split things into 2 movies is because there is so much that I can’t see them being able to fit in to the next movie, I won’t spoil anything but they’ve got to adapt at least 2 matches 1 that is a must and the other that is important but not mandatory, then they have the time skip, which splits into Hinatas trip, the match between Hinata and Kageyama as part of pro teams and then the closing of the series with everyone playing together at the Olympics/Kageyama and Hinata meeting in the finals of the pro league. If all that gets skipped there are sure to be a lot of disappointed fans, myself included. My hope is that this gets the same treatment as AoT, the studio realizes that 2 movies is not enough and fans are pissed that content will get cut and then have to slog to get a series of specials or another movie to get the rest in, though wouldn’t be happy if we have t go through the same waiting nonsense we did with AoT.

    As a manga reader, I felt the anime movie did a pretty good job with the adaptation. As someone who read the match as it was releasing chapters, it was frustratingly slow at many times during that match since Nekoma is such a defensive team and they weren't letting any balls drop for the most part. It's a shame a few important points and panels were omitted from the adaptation but in exchange we had some brilliantly animated rallies, especially the Kenma POV shot and the Kuroo vs Tsukishima rally. It's unsettling to think about how the series is supposedly ending with the next movie but with the success of this movie, I hope a 3rd movie comes into fruition.

I was really upset that they cut so much from the original game to condense it down for the movie. That moment where Kenma calls Lev an idiot for coming to help him was kinda of the pinnacle of Kenma's change in outlook, although it was said in the movie it felt glossed over and I am worried alot of Kenma's later character moments will also be cut. This is very interesting to hear, my personal case with this movie is, well, not very ideal haha. I went to see it because of a dear friend of mine that loves this anime invited me to, i have not watched a single episode of haikyuu but i did my homework on what were the characters names and basic information (only for it to be told to us like 3 minutes in the movie with the game introduction, i felt dumb).
    So saying i was a bit lost was an understatement, but i found myself really enjoying this movie and it's characters. While time went along, i lost myself in wonder with how chaming the story was and how nice the interactions are. It really made me feel many things relating to my own experiences in highschool and with those teenage friendships. Kenma and Kuroo reminded me so much of my own childhood friendship and it really hit me how little things my friend taught me out of a childish enthusiasm of hers became huge parts of my life later. It doesn't help that i'm in my last year, so the third years talking about how gratefull they were of the time they spent together was bound to get me emotional, man i was almost crying for characters i knew for a hour...
    I want to know more about their stories now, i want to see how they came to this point 4 seasons in, It's weird to say but I'm kinda glad to know the movie skiped/rushed through things because now this makes me even more excited to read the manga and see things as they were supposed to be, thank you! ❤ 😊
    -ps: Why is the volleyball grind after watching this anime so fucking real, i never felt so compelled to play a sport in my life?!? My teacher was really confused on why suddently i was giving my all in the game after 6 years of slacking around and maybe getting a recieve right.😅

    I literally just came back from the movie and basically my only complaint is how short it was. I'm going back to reread the manga (after 4 years) cause I know for sure there are moments we missed out on. The movie is great and definitely 'does it's job', but you'd think that for an anime/manga that turned out to be so loved by so many people, they'd put a bit more effort into it, they had yearss. Still loved it though.

    The movie felt like a real game does. Karasuno and Nekoma only had this one game in their constallation and if you are on the court for real time flies by - just like the game did. Especially season 3 and 4.2 had very drawn out games - which I enjoyed a lot don't get me wrong - but intetional or not I could really connect with the movie because of it's length not as an anime fan but as a Volleyball player. We once had 2 matches in a row, each went into the fifth set and some of us had no substitues - Kenmas exhaustion and POV at the end of the movie felt so incredibly relatable. More often than not, games you enjoy are over before you even realize.
    I get that a lot of people wanted more content out of the manga than just a short movie - I really get that - but the movie was still super funny, casual with the "slice of life" scenes and well animated.

    I'm still questioning why Haikyuu doesn't have a nice budget if IT'S FREAKING HUGE. i know I can't make a one by one comparison but KnY it's shorter and possibly more popular but the series it's taking seriously, has a high quality studio and a really nice long time project.
    Why Haikyuu doesn't? It's not like it's bad, they still publish special chapters and have collaborations with the volleyball league in Japan. For season 4 they changed some production members(that's why it looks strange) but they bring them back for the Garbage Dump movie, but not only that. It's been forever since season 4. I'm pretty sure they could've manage it better and come up with a different long time project :c

    Sadly anime movies never seem to be much longer than 1 hour. I my experience 1:25 is already somewhat on the longer side for anime movies. I'm not sure why this is, but it seems like they're somehow just not allowed to make longer movies.

    Agree wholeheartedly. Just to add something, for me it felt way colder than any other season till now. Haikyuu is wonderful because every character has a deep side to them, and Furudate shows you they all have a role, no matter how small, but the movie lacked exactly that. It was beautifully made, but there should've been more heart put into it

    Just want to point out that this isn't an issue with the director or the animators. This is just a selfish move from the production company or whoever has made this decision. Secondly I think what they did with the amount of time they were give was good. Not a 10/10 but with what they were told to deal with they made it as good as possible. For while it may not have been as slow or as emotional it accomplished something it normally doesn't which is recreate the speed of the game in how it really is. with some amazing animated moments

    I saw it 2 days ago I kind of left with mixed feelings because I liked the movie, but then it felt like everytime match was going on there was a flashback that felt good but quite uneccesary when you're sacrificing the god tier match animations that were in the anime before. I am gonna reread the manga to make sure but I felt like hinata didn't really get his moments like he did there and what I felt was almost criminal was the lack of awesome bgm whenever awesome plays were happening. I am frustrated at how much of the story was sacrificed to make it into movies.

    I was expecting the cuts to some scenes, but what actually bothers me was the change to Hinata breaking through Kenma's cage. In the manga, Hinata messes up the timing of the spike because it's his first time doing the super jump. In the movie, he executes the spike perfectly on his first try.
