Concise and what I was taught too. If you can win the fight without trapping/chi sau, that's more simple, more direct and more efficient!

“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” The beauty of Wing Chun practice is that it trains technique and principles of how to use your body. There is no preplanning only adapting. Trapping or any other technique is only done if it feels right at that moment. You can’t force someone into a trap. They have to fall into it.

The first form starts with a punch for a reason.

Something you may have missed on slipping punches. When a Boxer slips a punch he counter punches at the same time. He's using his opponents momentum against him and the power of his body slipping. A good example is a right cross. If a person steps in with his lead and his chin is unprotected then his opponent would slip inside the punch and throw a right cross over the lead on his chin. You have to be able to time your opponent but once mastered it is very effective and very hard to counter.

      Hi sir,
I think you mean something like what I demonstrate at 2:06 except I do it as a southpaw. I'm not a boxer so please forgive me. I generally try to stay away from explaining boxing unless it's useful to set up some Wing Chun explanations. What I like about boxing and combat sports in general is that it's all about reads in real time. So if the jab habitually drops after being thrown or, like you said, if the chin isn't tucked behind the shoulder on the jab, watch out! I can't wait for Beterbiev vs Bivol tomorrow.
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

The kune kuit says three things work together for trapping 1. The closing motion 2.the trapping motion and the attack. Wing Chun practitioners are not to punch without trapping.

Your trapping depends on the energy they use in order to trap. Application after touch. This is were sticky hands comes into play.

    5. Trapped opponent would just shift his body which make it harder to keep them trapped.
    6. The opponent would be move around a lot.

When an adversary with draws his hands after attack you simply attack his recovery by closing the gap and trapping and striking .

Rule of the game should be to control the centre of balance rather than trying to control the hands.
(Of course often you control your opponents centre of mass through their arms and trap them off balance)

      Hi William,
Yes, I agree. Affect balance through the arms so long as you can occupy centreline. Otherwise, Lat Sau Jik Chung.

When the stance of the opponent is bladed you trap his lead hand.

    1.You try trapping
    2. YOU DON'T DRAW THEM IN.
3.You make a plan to trap.
    4. Set routine of trapping.
    5.Don't trap straight forward
    6. Trap from the side.
7.Trap farthest attacking weapon.(more time to intercept).
    8. Disguise closing the gap with other strikes.
    9. Last understand the usefulness and when it not useful.
    10. Movable and free flowing footwork that add efficiency with trapping.
These are the reason trapping works and don't work.

WC or "Kung fu" techniques are legit but there are things to consider, such as the ancient chinese who originally invented fighting techniques and styles that were used in war also practiced weight lifting and other forms of strength training, those who were the strongest in raw strength were also considered most proficient as warriors. So here we get to the reason why kung fu is being embarassed around the world lately, these "masters" boasting and losing in the ring aren't really that strong physically, we are talking about "fighters" who probably can't bench press their own weight and on top of that they barely even spar or fight while the ancestors of the art of kung fu were basically strongmen who practiced art of war knowing in battle it's life or death, even the emperors of old were into this stuff and one actually died in a type of weight lifting challenge... In regards to improving technique I think the key here is to reach your physical potential with hard training, increase strength best you can and then you will see your techniques improve too. Now balance hardness with softness, gotta keep your body functional, health is a big part of kung fu. Ever done tai chi forms after a hard gym weight lifting workout? It feels amazing, I feel like the ancients probably did the same, stretches your body just the right way and helps you recover. Just some food for thought. Peace.

Lol I know what you mean. We all feel useless at times.
I have found that the feeling of uselessness can be quite useful when we choose not to ignore it, and instead, choose to “face the shape”.
In this regard, it seems to me like you’re on the right path. 👍
