"I prefer to get grand slammed" and thats Nicole giving in to intrusive thoughts 5 seconds in lmao. Why we love her.
I will never forgive IHOP for discontinuing the Banana Fosters French toast during Covid lockdown.
When the world needed it most, it vanished.
As a citizen of Aurora, Colorado, I'd like to thank you for the 100% accurate portrayal of life in our town
really puttin' us on the map... 🙃
Mississippi Ave!
The original 2 4 6 8 value menu at Dennys was incredible! To me Dennys has always been better from a value perspective, my local IHOP has pancakes for like $16 for just the pancakes.
We call this category “Golden Brown Food” because 80% of the menu is assorted shades of beige and tan 🤓
Thank you for raising my spirits with your banter. I appreciate this podcast
Josh is a master of karate and friendship for everyone!
Josh is Day Man? Fighter of the Night Man? Champion of the Sun?
Oh nevermind.... got there in the episode. Lol
I'm from Michigan , just saying because every state pronounces things differently , but my dad always told me it was p'con, because the peecan lived under the bed.
Puhcawn is a very southern pronunciation
@@JAT985and apparently in the Midwest too because everyone I know pronounces it puh-con
Nicole stunting in that Teddy Fresh 💅🖤
37:35 josh is right platonic attraction is real
platonic attraction isn't a thing. You're either attracted romantically or nothing
@@iamReddington The definition of attraction is literally "the action or power of evoking interest, pleasure, or liking for someone or something" and nowhere says that it must be romantic. Do you not like new people that then eventually become friends? What is sexual attration if that were the case anyways? Have you never heard someone say "that's an attractive house" or the like? Did it make you think people wanted to date the house? They didn't want to date the house. It's a way to describe something being pretty or interesting. Way to be so boldly confident about something so utterly incorrect
This is quite validating. I always thought Dennys had the better plain pancakes but ihop had the better dressed pancakes
i love this podcast so flippin much
Dennys used to be good pre 2000, and then IHOP just stepped it up. I will say though, I hop is better by not a large margin IMO, but ove heard overseas Danny's is way superior
Yah to me they are pretty much the same. There both okay if your hungry and they are the only place. Besides they tend to be affordable
lol I feel like 80s & 90s youths really traumatized Dennys…between the coffee & sharing-a-plate of fries for three hours people and the 2 am drunks, Dennys is tired.
Dennys is so much better than ihop.
Are you drunk?
I heard dennys Japan looks lit. Parfaits and beer lol.
A Role Models reference this early on Sunday made me so happy
As a non north-american person my first notice of Denny's existing was in the novel After Dark by Haruki Murakami, where the protagonist starts her night by idling in a 24 hours open Denny's in the middle of Tokyo. Which, in my opinion, makes Denny's more international than that so called international house of pancakes
Love the Beau Jo’s shout out!
It’s a Colorado tradition to escape the I70 traffic for a Mountain Pie in Idaho Springs on the way back from a ski day 🍕🍯
In my teens we went to Denny's late night after beating ourselves silly at punk shows. Burgers, baskets of fried sides, giant breakfast platters, it really hit the spot. I associate it with a place feral 90's teenage delinquents could go late at night. Ihop I associate with families on a Sunday morning. Little kids with sticky fingers, yuck.
I was a diehard IHOP guy most of my life but over the last 5-6 years they've gotten too damn expensive and the quality has gone down. $16 for a consistently dry omelette is just not cool. Also they need to bring back blintzes.
Keep flexing that vocabulary, Josh!
From celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse: Peecan is what truck drivers use. He would agree with how Josh says it.
My uncle is/has been my whole life, a Dennys manager and I went there SO MUCH as a kid cause of that.
Awesome job Josh see you on Tuesday
I am sorry you all never experienced the box pizza kit. The crust is like a biscuit. It is kind of fun and tastes weird. Definitely something to leave for the babysitter to make with the kids while parents are out eating good food.
Cracker Barrel was the go to breakfast when traveling when I was little. We would drive to Orlando from Illinois and Cracker Barrel was always the place we would stop at, definitely helps that you can see most of their restaurants from the interstate.
Everything is better quality food than Denny's or IHOP.
My daughter and I went to Niagara Falls and went to both and i preferred Denny's by far. IHOP was too sweet. We live in Ontario so there isn't many of either around unless you go to the bigger cities which are all at least 2 hours away.
look at Josh.... learning all kinds of vocabulary today!!
I’m learning so many new words!
i was so excited when josh referenced role models lol one of my favs
Im Canadian, we have Danny's, and we may have some IHOP'S but not where I live. Every time I go to the States, I love going to IHOP. It's soooo good to me. 😊
Ihop girl here, their gluten free pancakes and omelets are amazing! But I do admit that some of Denny's food is really good like their sausage links are incredible.😊
I just posted that IHOP doesn't have GF. Then I scroll down and see your post😮
Oh well, guess I haven't been in IHOP for a while.
Just a heads up their omelets have their normal pancake batter in them, so the omelets aren’t GF
8 full minutes of ads is wild 😂 get that bread ig
There aren't either in my area, we only have Perkins (off brand Denny's)
We had all three in our area, and perkins and dennys (to me and depending on location for either) are comparable. Perkins pancakes depending on location do taste better. But perkins breakfast is the best thing they got going (and the seasonal tomato soups)
Do you remember the Perkins bread bowl salads? That was so good!! They also have delicious muffins!
@TTL47 My family didn’t eat out that often, and I still don't really. I've only been to Perkins a handful of times, as growing up, it was a few towns over.
Perkins is the best !!
Dennys is the best. In particular, the Dennys on Front St. right off of 435 in KC. I have been going there for a decade. Friendly and delicious.
PUHLEASE research the IHOP and Denny's super smash Brothers saga. So so good!
I totally agree with Josh about the new lingo being absurdly chaotic and unsatisfying.
When Nichole mentioned the diner near LAX I knew exactly which one she meant. Pann’s is usually my first stop after flying to LA. Waffle and chicken wings ftw
I love beaujos and honey goes so well with crust
Yes please do an episode on French pastries !! (spoiler: they're not overrated)
Last time I was at one of those kind of places it was Perkins. Only a couple of them in Canada, and only went because it was close to my hotel. As for as the rest of those pancake places I think some of the mom and pop diner places are better quality even without the frills, whipped cream and caramel sauce etc.
I totally forgot about Perkins! There's one in Orlando Florida that I grew up going to.
Wait I just realized that the AHIAS episodes get like fractional views compared to everything else on this channel. That makes me so sad cause I love you guys. More people should watch😤. I now understand why you have a million ads in the middle of these episodes and I take back my earlier complaints about them. Whatever allows y’all to be you is worth🤘🏾
I havent been to Denny's in ages but I love the butter pecan syrup at IHOP.
I am a Dennys over IHOP person because silently digging into Dennys hashbrowns after calling a show in high school is a core experience BUT I would go to village inn over both.
I don't know how Denny's makes the hash browns so good but they're just 👌
Adam Ragusea did a great video on the origins of the terms we use for macaroons. For me, growing up in the 80s it was coconut macaroons and French macaroons. The introduction of using the French spelling and vowels (10-15 years ago?) for macaron always felt forced and false. Like when people try to pronounce foyer, foy-yeah.
Foyer is only foy-yeh if you have millions. If not it's the real pronunciation.
I listen for the jibjab, jibjab. Keep it up!
LOL, hilarious. Ironically really varies by location. For the west coast, essentially always IHOP. Also, TAKE THAT WAFFLE HOUSE!
Me, being from the canton, ohio area, currently sitting in the canton, ohio area, i can confirm that people here love Cracker Barrel.
agreed, please do a French pastry episode
I know SAT scores are entirely irrelevant in life at this point. But knowing I didn't score that much lower than josh makes me feel pretty decent about myself lol
Yes
Hot food at the end of a long day slaps from either of these places! The best place for pancakes is Perkins lol. Josh, thank you for your giant words so we can build our vocabulary.
Pretty non sequitur, but I don't remember Josh ever mentioning that his dad was a veteran! Super cool.
For y'all's next "Past Food" episode I would actually sob if y'all recreated the IHOP Horton Hears a Who Promotional menu of Pancakes with a bubblegum dum dum in the middle paired with sprite and jelly cubes
I think every restaurant should include a rating of their bathrooms as well. I know a lot of that depends on staffing, but still
Y’all need to try mixing Cheerios with cool ranch Doritos in a snack bag .. it’s the BEST snack mix combo trust me
Dennys pancakes taste like childhood just magical
Denny's over IHOP forever! I recently at at IHOP because my Mom wanted to try it and boy was I disappointed. The food was okay, but I felt like it was really small portions. Perhaps it was my local spot. The pancakes I had were a lot smaller than the ones Josh and Nicole had on screen there. So I had to order more food because I needed more food. I still left hungry. The worst part though were the prices. Denny's, the food is better, you leave full, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.
I always thought Dennys was better. I definitely think their pancakes and flavored syrup taste better, and that's a staple .
If y’all haven’t been to the North Hollywood Diner at Magnolia and Tujunga then you’re not doing diners right. I miss that place so much. Have a Monte Cristo for me. 🤤
My jaw is on the floor, I live in Canton and I'm having an out of body experience hearing josh talk about the football HOF which I have worked on the outside of, and drive by every day.
I was always on the Denny's train growing up, i have to agree with Josh in the beginning
The dennys in the city nearest me closed recently and im so sad. Its been a long time since we went there but ive always through dennys was just a little bit better.
Nicole, you're wrong. You can absolutely be platonically attracted to someone.
You are to most of your friends, at least that's what I was taught in psychology in high-school.
Cracker Barrel is seriously my favorite restaurant
I'm not enough of a breakfast person to care, but Denny's was great for a 2am grilled cheese after a night of drinking. 😆
I hope by me is like 20 bucks for a breakfast meal. We in the OC and my wife and my meal was like 67 with tip smh crazy high…
Can we talk about Perkins?
No one I know remembers Perkins!!! They were SO GOOD, and omg, their French silk pie. 😢
@@kayshinae9023yessss! I forgot about that pie
Not Josh randomly shouting out the cracker barrel I grew up going to in Allentown, PA...Mind blown
I have to point out that Denny’s quality vastly differs between the states. Down here in Florida, Denny’s is god awful while the times I visited LA, the Denny’s I ate at was phenomenal compared to the ones down here.
The first time I visited Florida in 2000, there was a Denny's right next to our hotel, so we ate there a couple of times. My friend nicknamed the cook Booger.
My favorite part of the Chef Boyardee pizza kit was the can of sauce. We'd always have to add mozzarella anyway, the crumbly parmesan that was included was pretty mid
as a person who grew up in a town of 300, its hilarious see 60000 referred to as small town
josh described the most classic aurora waffle house experience ever. also, were you more hungover because of the altitude change?
Try crunchy peanut butter on one side, Philadelphia cream cheese on the other side and sliced banana. Best sandwich ever!
I stopped going to IHOP when they started charging $4 to drink. Coffee, soda, it didn't matter. It was all $4.
No mention for Dennys being open 24 hours! That’s what puts them in the lead for me. Nothing quite hits like some midnight dennys
Trick question. Perkins is the best diner.
I had so much drunk Denny’s in the early 2000s.
👋🏾 I’m from Canton and Akron is right up the road. Our cities are not big at all. Lol! 😂
We don’t have those lol! Denny’s closed down about a decade ago. Nobody eats at Cracker Barrel anymore. We have iHop and Waffle House - they’re mid. But we’re not THAT small town lol! 😂😂😂😂😂
The only reason I know olympians weren’t pro is reading about Sergei Grinkov and Ekaterina Gordeeva, but I hadn’t really thought about it before you mentioned it. 😭
Denny’s is far superior. Omelette at IHOP have pancake batter in them. Pancake batter. Also, their whole thing is supposed to be pancakes, but they no longer specialize in them, they just dump pie filling on top, and call it a day. The don’t even make crepes anymore.
But I do not eat at either of these places anymore.
This episode just confirmed for me how much IHOP is for people who think they are better than Denny's
IHOP is where you go to actually get breakfast. Denny's is where to go at 2 am to sober up.
41:30 If you make a good dough (65-70% hydration) and make your pizza thin and crispy (New Haven style) your crust will be like a small baguette and who doesn’t like that?
I never choose to go to one of these places. If I am hungry on the road, and nothing else is open, either one is fine. In college, Denny's was the only b place open at 2 AM, so that's where we went
shout out to peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. My mom took forever trying to get me to try them... now I prefer them over pb&j.
The fact 70,000 people is considered a small town is wild. Could fit mine ten times over in there
70,000 people is a midsized suburb, do not let these LA people fool you. Everything is just giant in LA, where they have suburbs of 150k people.
Im going to make a pickle peanut butter sandwich right NOW! lol
Aurora Colorado.. you brave soul.
Wait - there's more to the Chef Boyardee pizza kit debacle: Not only did they get rid of the packet of dried cheese that used to come with the kit, but back in the late 70s/early 80s Chef Boyardee offered TWO kits: Cheese or Pepperoni! The can of pizza sauce that came in the kits was completely unmarked - literally just a silver can. But in the Pepperoni version of the kit there were tiny chopped up pieces of pepperoni in the pizza sauce. So Chef Boyardee has lowered their offering on this product twice!
My opinion is that they've completely ruined the pizza sauce as well (far too sweet now, and no spices) and the kit is now utterly useless.
Getting grand slammed and looking at myself in the mirror.
For me Denny’s all the way but the Denny’s I always go to is the #1 ranked Denny’s in the world
lakewood is closer to long beach, close to OC line
What was franchise consistency like in the 1950s? Even though they had the same menus, I’ll bet every locations food tasted different.
I grew up in Michigan and there were only Denny's so it was a treat to go to Indiana to visit family and go to IHOP. As an adult, I prefer Village Inn or IHOP. In Arizona, Village Inn is superior to IHOP, but in California IHOP is the GOAT. This isn't taking into consideration little mom and pop diners.
I love how much Josh randomly name drops Allentown PA. That’s my Cracker Barrel! And it’s way better than both ihop and Denny’s IMO.
Memory and consciousness are not the same thing Josh.
nicole got me losing my mind, me too girl lmao
In my area, there are a lot more Dennys here than IHOPs tbh 😅
Not from the US, but Canadian Dennys is pretty good (love the breakfast poutine), the pancakes are good. Its been awhile since ive had them but they do taste like regular pancakes from any diner tbh; depending on whos making them they can scale from a 7-9 (on a scake if 10) They don’t have any gluten free pancakes though! (The gf english muffins are pretty good (theyre the Glutinos brand 10/10))
IHOP though does have have good pancakes as well, love the bisquick flavor ngl. I will say though the gluten free vs regular pancakes taste different. The gluten free ones taste better (imo) than the regular ones. Something about them just is better? Not sure how to explain it !
(Edit: IHOP gluten free pancakes use a rice flour base (rice flour, milk, egg whites, honey and “other gluten free friendly ingredients” and apparently some location have gf waffles!)
I was always an ihop person went with my family a lot growing up. buttt college me went to dennys a lot late at night lol. Ihop for breakfast morning time and Dennys for late nights
The salted Carmel banana pancakes should come with a Carmel sauce if there isn’t one they forgot to give it to you. Please please try it with the Carmel
