US vs UK Denny's | Food Wars | Insider Food
We drove to WALES to film this, surely that deserves a like 😉
Any Man who drives 200 miles just to review Breakfast Food deserves a like
Harry, please learn that what the English call pancakes (the crepe style ones) are not the standard throughout the U.K. Scottish pancakes are much closer to the USA ones, they’re just a bit smaller in size.
Oh and if you fry Scottish pancakes they are actually a great component on a Scottish fry-up that can be mixed and matched with potato scones, soda scones (Scottish version of Soda Farls) or fried bread.
You couldn't even pay me to eat at the Dennys down the street from me. I salute the UK Food Wars crew. 🫡
I went to uni in Swansea when Denny's opened - they had a 0 hygiene rating so we never went
Where did you film this then? You didn't cart them all the way back to London, did you? They must have been rank if you did!
Great episode! The one that they NEED to do, though, is US vs. Japan Denny's. That may be an eye-opener for some people.
Only Denny's I've ever been to was in Tokyo.
Went there thinking it would be solely American food - was surprised.
@@michaelleiper Dennys in Japan is 100% an independent company. They only kept the name but otherwise Denny's has nothing to do with them. Comparing those two is somewhat pointless.
@@ohredhk IIRC, 7-Eleven actually runs Denny's in Japan.
@@TheZenomeProjectso basically they are two different restaurants? Why compare then
That’s why I love this channel. Always informative about restaurants I didn’t know existed in a country I lived in all my life 🤦🏽♀️
There appears to be a solitary Denny's and it's in Wales. Not gonna lie, take-away will be a pain.
We used to have the super bird sandwich in the UK. It was the only thing worth going to Denny's for. They took it off the menu and we haven't been back since lol. Honestly not worth the trip for those of you planning to drive down here to Swansea to try the UK's solitary Denny's. Save your cash and your time! ----- Also fun fact: When this Denny's first opened it was doing everything the 'American' way, including how they ran the kitchen. It failed it's first health inspection with the 'American' style of kitchen management and had to switch to how the UK typically handles food safety, etc.
Ah the US failed a health inspection even outside the US. Never felt so proud as an American
I have to ask, but what's the American style of kitchen management?
To answer that question, yes, we do have Kinder Bueno in the US. It was launched around 2021, I wanna say, and the filling is a hazelnut cream.
2021? how come you like a century behind the UK?
I don’t know what it’s like in Europe, but I tried it when it came to America and it was unbearably sweet. I am normally good with sweet food, but I could only take 2 bites before I felt sick from the sweetness.
@@Lost_scotsman Most likely the kinder egg ban, that ban was put in the works for so long, causing all products to be banned. But I guess the ban was lifted for everything but the eggs now.
I used to pay $4 for a Kinder Bueno at World Market all the time now Walmart and gas stations have them for $1.
coming from someone who recently quit denny's, America does have a ham and cheese omelet "moons over my hammy omelet" but it's exclusive to the value menu and won't be found on the original menu (unless otherwise customized) also some Denny's do serve beer just depends on the location
sad my closest one doesn't seem to list beer anymore. made the late night eat there better.
Good episode, i love the format, you guys are still going strong.
Food Wars is awesome, I had no idea that the UK had Denny's... I remember being in college and eating at Denny's very late at night/into the morning. Denny's was perfect drunk food, super affordable back then... although things may have changed since then.
Yes we have one & its in my city I grew up in called Swansea. Temporary there was two but Glasgow wasn’t keen on it. Swansea Denny’s is good. They closed at 10 or 11.00pm. Open at 7.00am or 8.00am. They usually open longer in summer. Is it officially only Denny’s in UK. A train from London to Swansea High Street station is 3 hours but a 10 minute walk to Denny’s or 20 minutes to bus station.
I remember in my 20s, going to Dennys after the bar near it closed at 2am. Fun memories and the food helped prevent a hangover!
I feel bad for anyone that goes to Denny's that you either didn't go, or don't have a Waffle House. SOOOOO much better.
One of the best episodes I've ever seen! Harry and Joe are food masters in my eyes!
I agree but Amercian guy really dropped the ball. So many options he tells us about but does not order. And mainly no mention of grits as an option a real state side option exclussive to Dennys breakfast
@@thebairdhaslanded it really annoys me how disrespecting the American guy is with the food. He man-handles it too much and doesn't show it any respect.
@@chadvix5861 lmao what it’s denny’s
@@jaymf2560 Let me guess, you're American?
@@chadvix5861 No I’m English lol, I just don’t get why you care about him manhandling food that’s already poor quality
i think its important in these food wars to be open. With some of these brands. That are everywhere in the USA and there is like 3 outlets in the UK :) 99% of people in the UK havent even had UK Dennys. I had it in Canada once and I had Fish n Chips lol.
Yeah I googled it. It’s just one location in Swansea, Wales. Harry had to travel all the way to different country just for some pancakes 😂 appreciate the video though
it does start to not make sense to compare. i only know Denny’s because of the driving i’ve done in the US. i had no idea we even had any here.
They literally say in the video that there's like one Dennys in UK and it's not really a thing there.
German viewer here and I agree with my American friends on this: It's Nuw-tell-uh. 😄 Love you guys.
Do you pronounce nuts as nuwts though?
it's from an italian company, the same people who make ferrero rocher. so it's meant to be pronounced how an italian would say it, which is nootella. i guess newtella is similar enough
@@Ray_Vunmy boyfriends family is Italian and they pronounce it, Newtella.
Denny's is the place you always go to when you're drunk at 3 AM, nice to see it finally getting an episode!
I agree. Too bad they didn’t go all in on the Denny’s experience.
UK: Paper
US: everything is made with at least a cup of oil
the key difference between why Denny’s can work in the US but unlikely to in the U.K. is size: you can drive for 100s of miles in parts of the US, if you place a restaurant in the right place, people will eat it because there’s no other option. This simply isn’t possible in the U.K. in the same way.
Yea that's a very good point similar to Ireland the UK is far more densely populated than America think about it if you live in the UK for example the vast majority of places you can live is at most 1 hour drive of a mcdonalds same in Ireland but America there's plenty of places nowhere near a mcdonalds lol
Tbf might be why it's in Wales
I have been waitikg for this for YEARS
Yes! I requested this ages ago! :D
Loved this!
That s awesome idea guys
You got a Denny's in the UK? Damn all you need is a waffle house.
We have exactly one, just outside Cardiff.
@@ChopperPBM This comment makes me sad, it's in Swansea! Very much it's own city lol
Swansea wales
Abertawe
@@Muzzathemint Swansea doesn't deserved to be named
LOVE the way the respect food. Throwing it around and all.
Dennys was an after-the-bar destination for us in our 20s , so best no alcohol on the US menu
You guys went to Wales for this?
In Northern Ireland, we sometimes have pancakes with our fry, so beans and pancakes yum!
there was a dennys that opened just outside of glasgow a few years ago but it closed pretty quickly. it was awful and got terrible reviews so most tried it once and then never went back.
i don't think we quite have space in the market for it. people tried it because it was a novelty but it wasn't good enough to make people return.
I’m pretty sure moons over my hammy has been a sandwich my entire life (30 years). It’s literally been my go to for as long as I can remember.
Yes its only on the value menu
One of the best episodes
what do you do with the food after filming ]
I was not ready for the mustach 😂 it's good but a change that i wasn't expecting!
Harry.. you are *_rocking_* the stache!!!!
And I just had Denny’s three days ago. Really hoping they open a branch in our city 😭
Literally one spot in south Cymru, near Abertawe. Bit weird doing this
Those red velvet pancakes look great. Also give me that mac and cheese sandwich.
We live in Oregon.
And did live in Washington?
In both places my wife always got ham and cheese omelets. Plus in America you can pretty much, have them make it whatever way you want it.
I love this episode
I didn’t get the notification that this episode drop but it’s OK. I’m watching it now and you know what I was never a big fan of Denny’s
7:11 If you have to tilt it, just add a top camera to the setup.
This whole episode just to tell us that there's only ONE Denny's restaurant in the entire UK?! 😅
I’m a Brit and I’ve never even heard of it until now 😂
Same never heard of Denny's
Anyone know why it's been 5 years and there's only 1 Dennis?
@@frankieepurrOur breakfast culture is so different so it prob hasn't caught on
@@LG_XD but 5 years and one location?
I'm pretty sure Moon Over My Hammy is named after a Movie or song called Moon Over Miami.
For a while they carried a "tres Leche" pancake alike IHOP. I forgot who had the better or worst one but they were really great. I'm sure they would kill anyone who ate them often, but that's part of the enjoyment.
Los Anageles born and raised; moved to Phoenix, AZ 9 years ago. (I'm 43 so in comparison to my life not that long lol). Anyway, never in my life have I heard anyone say, 'Newt-ella?" And, yes, we do have kinder bueno here.
7:58 Technically, bananas are berries. That's why it's called a double berry pancake, because it has two types of berries. Strawberries and bananas.
You did this back in February wow 😯
Great video!
We literally have ONE Denny’s in the whole of the UK. It’s in Wales and gets terrible reviews. If Dennys is here, you’d think they’d at least be expanding a bit more. They came here before Tim Horton’s arrival, and there’s now about 70 of those already.
The last time I ate dennys was almost ten years ago when I was in high-school and I fondly remember the cheese stick grilled cheese. Oh the days when I could eat that much dairy
Wait the only Denny's I know that's in the UK is in Swansea, unless they've opened more restaurants?
there was one just outside of glasgow a few years ago but it closed pretty quickly.
pancakes look so great you guys :)
Dennys Also Have their Branch in Jakarta Indonesia as well
But Of Course 、There is Some Spicy Menu included there for the sake to appeals the local (( in this case the Steak Fajita one ))
Not Reccomended for Solo Eater as the Portion Pretty Big
Would you ever be interested in adding Canada 🇨🇦 to your team? I love watching your videos, and I love food. I'm also a chef. It would be my dream job to represent us Canadians on Insider Food.
They don't add racist countries to their team
They did Tim Hortons recently, I'm assuming with a Canadian.
@@missouriluv That was an American
@@lostinreverie2183 😂
How different would it be from the American ones?
That's snake jibe was brilliant 😂😂😂
Idk about any other Dennys in the states but the worlds most northern Dennys in Fairbanks Alaska also sales beer and wine. So technically alcohol is not a UK exclusive.
the only Denny’s in the UK is literally a 5 minute drive from me… and i’ve never been 😂 but maybe i need to go after watching this!
I worked at Dennys and my favorite things to make was a strawberry cheescake milkshake or an apple crumble milkshake
I was a midnight shift Denny's cook a long time back when the year still started with 19. Drunk people were so easy to cook for unless they ordered steak or eggs Benedict. Eggs Benedict during a 2am bar rush is such a pain in the ass. And man the prices have changed. And we didn't split an appetizer. We would just get coffee and smoke.
22:22 was the BEST part of the video
There was a Dennys in Braehead near Glasgow, i dont think it lasted long
Will you ever do a Food Wars with Germany? At least we have some of the chains like Burger King, McDonalds, KFC, Subway or Pizza Hut
Apparently, the company NUTELLA pronounces it the way NEW-TELL-UH. So take it up with them, not America.
Englishmen suck at speaking proper English lmao.
Harry my friend, the cream inside the Ferrero Rocher is Nutella. they are both made by the same company Ferrero.
I hope the US vs Japan version of this is coming soon.
Insider Food, please tell me you haven’t stopped uploading human written subtitles. Auto subs are fine but human written ones make videos for deaf/ hard of hearing viewers so much more enjoyable!
they have subs :) probably took awhile for it to process when the video was uploaded
Didn’t even know we had Denny’s in the UK. Is Shoney’s still a thing in the US? I remember going there when I was about 6 (in around 1992)
There's one Denny's and it's in wales
Awesome
Nice video Dennys leads the way as america favorite diner .
good video
I miss going to Dennys they closed down the two locations near me.
Went to Dennys in Swansea UK.... compared to my old 'local' in Auburn, Maine it was a sad experience all round
when harry was showing the spaceship chicken and turned it upside down i was like "hey that looks like among us" and then he immediately started talking about the "health conscious among us" like was that planned or do i need to touch grass
Portion Sizes and Exclusives would be labelled 'Breakfast' and 'Items' respectively in the chapter titles.
Ethel’s or Fred’s? Lol Joe naming diners after I love Lucy characters
lol
The guy from Japan is the best, he actually tries everything.
Just come back from Anaheim, and had a Dennys. I was staggered an just how expensive the food was in America. I think Breakfast for my 12 year old and I (with tips) came to close to £30-£35....
The worst part of all that will be the adulterated food you will have been served, pumped full of chemicals and additives, all to keep production costs low and profits high.
Yeah that’s probably cuz it was in Anaheim. A lot of places in that city Jack up the prices cuz Disneyland tourists nearby
damn, I live in OC but the south part. Last I went to denny's I think my bill must've been close to 20 dollars. State minimum wage is $15, so meals aren't cheap anywhere.
I love the hashbrowns at Dennys! The All-American Slam and Super Bird are my favorite things to order.
99 is online highest anything can go and it won’t let you go higher it’s a system issue. Most won’t even as a manager let you lower it.
nice little guga slide in during the omelette bit
I can confirm we do have Kinder in the US just not Kinder Surprise (in its place we have Kinder Joy, which has chocolate on one side and a toy on the other). I do really enjoy Buenos especially the white chocolate ones and the different chocolates they sell during Easter
Does anyone know what they do with all the food after filming?
Probably eat it or give what’s left to homeless shelters.
Kinder Bueno? Yes. Here in Canada. Not surprised as we are, after all, close cousins.
The Cinnabon roll pancakes are dangerous fr Joe 🥞😭
4:12 it’s the first time I saw that joe has a tattoo
fruit sandwich banana salt crumble pancake amazing👍👍👍
Love this mainly coz Joe seemed salty. Salty Joe .> Regular Joe 😂😂😂
Joe with the Gorilla Biscuits Encino Man mashup >>>
i work at dennys in canada and i love it lol
Joe is just a real life Rick Sanchez even they way he says certain phrases 💀
"Breakfast-es" ticked me 😅
3:07
My boy didn’t even try to say Worcestershire sauce at 11:25
Moons over my hammy... ❤️🤤
23:01 the last time I went to Dennys A couple of old people were there and one of the old people fell out of his chair like half way though there meal and they paid and left all their food(I think it was a table of 5)
Hope you are enjoying the Food Wars series by Food Insider (now known as "Insider Food").
There’s Denny’s in the UK, how did I not kno this from living here all my life haha
You guys should do Dr Pepper in the USA vs uk 🇬🇧
A Veggie Tales song about loving a cheeseburger makes a reference to Dennys in the second verse
They're really serving medium rare bacon in the UK.
😂
"It's like biting into a wallet". Love it.
I missed you Joe last episode ❤
The Denny's near me has a full bar in the U.S. so alcohol is not an exclusive in the U.K.
You must have top notch Denny's because ours will never produce food that looks like that. The last time I went we got Nacho and it was all liquid. Chips included haha 10 outta 10
