    I did one of these the other day which required an 11mm hex bit for removal, not a 12mm. I was surprised to find I even owned an 11mm hex! I'd certainly never had a use for it before, but it did the trick.

    Thank you so much for posting this. I just a brand new cassette free hub spinning both ways. Some WD40 took care of it for the time being, but I would like to crack it open and see if it needs some grease or if any pawls/ratcheting mechanism is broken or not. I am glad there are tools for cassette freehub disassembly. I have placed an order for one. Thank you once again. Very helpful video.

    Awesome video, great to see someone actually repair something rather than throw it in the bin.... I have a failed freehub bearing and there is a lot of play in it causing my cassette to shift during my ride. My local bike shop said I had more chance of winning the lotto than to find a replacement freehub body, that said I am going to pull it apart and try to find a replacement as well as service the cup and cone bearings while I'm there. Is there any advice you can offer as to how I can identify a new freehub body?

    Waiting on a 12mm allen wrench to do exactly the same as you, mucka.Easton Aero wheels from 2011. Didn't realise I needed that lock ring tool as well. Looks like I'll be walking to work next week then, or fitting my new Campag Zonda's :) WV13 'ere
    UPDATE:
    Turns out the lock ring in the freehub body on the Easton's is not removable. I purchased the tool but it will not budge. Needless to say, the Zonda's are on and what great wheels they are.

  • @ebunnes
    @ebunnes 3 роки тому +2

    Looks like this job definitely needs a bench vise and unfortunately I only have locking pliers :( I just cant get a good hold on the body and I just end up with the pliers slipping and damaging the hub or rounding the notches in the lockring. Seems that all I can do to service my hub is to flush it with some solvent and then drown it in oil, and lastly I can put some grease on the inner bearings that can be seen without the rubber seal. There's no way I can get to the ratchet mechanism and the outer bearings (those that are closer to the bike frame)

      If it’s Shimano it will be a 10mm hex, if not it could be 11 or 12mm hex, the 12mm ones are really on there so try using the Allen key in a vice to hold it while you spin the wheel for leverage 👍

    Someone help? If you turn it clockwise to undo as suggested then the whole tool turns with no resistance. The only way to stop this from happening is to put the threaded or spline end of the free hub in the vice and then turn it clockwise though in the video it looks like the upper part of the free hub is being held in the vice. Please correct me if i'm wrong. Help would be much appreciated

    • @retrobikestuff760

      The threaded part needs holding so you can unscrew the cup.
      Tip, put the removal tool in the freehub, then put the tool in the vice so you don’t damage the thread on the freehub, whilst the unit is in the vice unscrew the cup clockwise to loosen.
      Hope that helps
