LAND is OPPORTUNITY : Sustainable Harvesters
Meet Matthew Braud, Co-founder of Sustainable Harvesters which was formed out of the necessity for fresh and local produce in the Houston, Texas market.
Their mission, passion and commitment is to grow the freshest produce using the most efficient, sustainable, and safest technology available.
Sustainable Harvesters has over 12,000 square feet of environmentally controlled greenhouse that has the capacity to grow over 7,000 heads of lettuce every week utilizing growing techniques called Aquaponics.
Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (the soil-less growing of plants) that grows fish and plants together in one integrated system.
Coming this Summer - expansion of another 8,000 square feet!

The initial investment into this system is fairly large...albeit still less than traditional farming I’d imagine. I’m curious on your ROI and this being truly sustainable commercially. Which leads to my second thought of sticking with Hydroponics over Aquaponics. What financially advantages do you feel you’ve obtain though adding the protein? Is it less expensive overall than adding nutrients as is done in Hydroponics?
I really like this guy. He even speaks respectfully of algae.
🤩
he sounds South African
@@laverneabdrabu3676 ??????? He’s American? What the fuck? What the fuck do you think South Africans sound like? Utter moron.
@@laverneabdrabu3676 What? Is he a South African who speaks with an American accent? He sounds nothing like us.
Certain freshwater water crustaceans will eat and thrive on algae, they help keep it down. I use crawfish and freshwater shrimp.
Ultimately this is the ultimate lettuce growing setup.

Have watched 1000's of aqua and hydro videos... This is top 2 of all time. Very educational, specific enough to be interesting but not overcomplicated. Bravo. Hoping to get a tour of your facility soon.

i worked on a farm in tucson exactly like this. same exact setup. this is a ton of work. the problems with this system can be pretty brutal. fish food doesnt transfer all of the nessicary nutrients through the fish. over time you run into major deficiency imbalences. also fish die. and harvests have to be balenced to prevent ph spikes. if you get a leak in your system you will walk into work one day and find lots of dead fish and when you refill your system with water and fish you still have total nutrient loss. we eventually moved to complete hydroponics and mushroom cultivation.
so after some research ive decided decoupled aquaponics is the answer. this way you can use the fish waste water as a base and add extra nutrients / pesticides to your plants without effecting the fish.
You can easily design a system where a tank never completely drains if there is s leak. Don’t have a bottom drain.
@@jimster1111 problem with decoupled is you have to constantly change out the water. Coupled allows for much higher densities. Of course a coupled system should be designed to allow the ability to temporarily decouple.
@@dougp7934 from what ive heard you can compensate for the lack of bio filtering from not having grow beds in a coupled system by increasing the size of your bio ball or bio filtration setup
"These tilapia are the real engine to our motor" lol
I really liked this video. I never thought learning about lettuce growing would be this interesting. Great job.
The quality of this presentation is evident when savvy listeners analyze the system and generously offer suggestions for even greater efficiency and yield.

This is STUNNING. What would be the icing on the cake is to make it all solar powered especially with the texas sun!!!
@G Caleb Lee Great idea! Thank you for your positive and kind comment.
The only improvement I can think of for your system would be using either airducts run underground for cooling or making an earth mound system over air vents to get cooler air into your greenhouse. The earth cooling system also provides warmer air in cooler months to save some propane on heating.
Needs better feed for the fish to be sustainable imo. Its not sustainable to use fishpellets. At all. Breeding mosquitos or flies and drop them in etc.
What an informative and nicely balanced report. Heavy on facts but not on jargon. Great job guys.

Compost gets to very high temps even in the winter. You mentioned you have a large amount of composting material. During cold months could you run your return line like a car’s radiator through or just below the compost bin to collect heat for your fish. Having the fish and the compost high and the return line lower and a smaller diameter it should circulate on its own. Just an idea. Great video.

Advice for fish if you have a problem with smallfish. Then you make one more fish bed so when small fishes go trough one filter then they go to smaller fish bed and so on. Untill the oldes fish tank is full with max fish size then you harvest him and replace with next bed size fish and so the life cycle of fishes are fully use.
