- How to get it built right: 5122143639651.gumroad.com/l/book
A few shortcuts for some of the goodies I called out:
Ugly side leaves a lip: 0:40, hurts my heart at 4:41
Flash shingle style: 1:58
L shaped ground rod? 2:45 Is that acceptable in your city?
Nailing a rafter ain't hard: 5:20, top plates are easier! 5:45
Shear wall bracing sheared off: 7:15
Foam foam foam: 7:58 Binding your windows!!
Watch where your toilet flange sits: 9:19 Thank God I am not a plumber.
Plan on using Internet? 10:00 Voltage bleed from low to high.
Finger jointed wood basics: 11:15
I had a house built in Tennessee 30 years ago and visited the site every week and corrected things done by the builder every. single. time.
At 7:25, that is on the framers. They ran the brace right where the plumber needs to run drain and vent. A little coordination goes a long way in construction.
When low-voltage and high-voltage cables/wires are running parallel, they need to have 12 inches minimum separation.
Toilet flanges - the metal rings turn, so no problem there.
Yeah somebody else brought this up. I will check that next time. Thanks for the info!
You're doing a great service for us regular people. We support you!
I've been in the building industry for 45 years, and trust me when I say alot of inspectors don't know beans from applesauce ,typically failed construction workers, the houses are built to code , not Jimmy's opinion not saying he's wrong ,but just trying to justify his huge fee
Subcontractor: "Can't see it from my house . . ."
They put it up fast but they did a HORRIBLE 👎job! What a mess! Well done to catch the expensive adjustments. If I were the owner I would be extremely angry😡 and would not trust any further work from this builder👎 and the subcontractors....Wow! Thank you Casey for your channel. We are learning a lot from you, even from Eastern Canada, Atlantic Canada, the province of Prince Edward Island. 🙏💝
Hey thanks for the kind words! Never been out that way but if yall ever get to Texas, let me know!
@@constructivainspections Will do and thank you once again. You are doing an amazing job and keeping it real. A recent vid you mentioned you were disappointed that the builder did not change an important part done in your post inspection. I believe it was the curved up foundation mud sill, where water was sure to gather. UGH! I hope the owner, armed with your video and inspection report, will follow through and make the builder more accountable for this serious mess! I look forward to your next report. So much to learn from you. Fantastic! 👍 ☺🇨🇦
the toilet flange ring is movable
IF it didn't get gunked up with concrete.
Might as well not flash those pipes at all if that's how you're going to do it
great video thank you for sharing ! please keep uploading in this style !
Glad I've not had to do any home inspections these past 30 years. Just from the cardboard "sheathing" I'd recommend the buyer walk away.
The toilet flange can spin
I wonder what happens to those finger-joints if the wall is ever flooded.
On the closet flange those stainless rings will spin they just need to get the off the flange than spin it and anchor it down no big deal
Yeah just found that out! Thanks for the heads up; I will remember that for next time.
I was just going to post that. :-)
Wow!!!...who are the subcontractors?
At 7:09, the shear wall needs structural blocking at the mid height of the studs for post strength. Studs of eight foot length are not going to support a load without horizontal bracing at least every 4 feet vertical, or preferrably less.
That ground rod is insane lol also don't they need 2 rods at least?
Nice Vid!
as a plumber, how do you install the tub drain without removing the bracing ? tell the client to buy the tub with the drain on the other side ? shouldnt the builder know the drain goes there and have made the bracing on the other side of the wall ? just curious what you guys think
That's a great question; how should it be done? In the end I suppose it is the designer that screwed up. Perhaps the let in bracing should have gone on the other side of the wall.
Yeah. Blaming the plumber for framing oversights. He also said the flanges were “installed wrong” when they’re designed to spin until secured after flooring install.
I am worried about that water sitting on foundation, that is bad design.
Why not build the wall close to the edge of the foundation so that water just rolls down.
No idea how they will fix it.
New inspector here in the Greater Austin area and am trying to learn pre drywall inspections. I’m really digging your content and learning a lot. Keep up the great work!
Hey thanks homie! There's a lot to learn with pre-drywall inspections. Glad you enjoy the videos and I hope you learn something!
Gosh! Who are the subcontractors and builders for this home! What a mess! How can there be a regulatory organization to stop builders like this from traumatizing hardworking people trusting their hard earned money. UGH! This happens everywhere and in Canada as well. 😔🇨🇦 Casey, good thing you are watching peoples back! 👍💯
i am wondering why you can find so many confident inspectors but no confident carpenters
Ufer ground. Interior bottom plates not required to be treated if on a slab. Let in braces not necessarily used as shear walls but for plumb and liner. See plan
Thank you. You videos are most helpful.
We called in a plumber and an electrician to do some serious repairs.
Happy New Year.
Sure wish you could name the general contractor and the subcontractors. Also what area is this?
Austin Texas, baby!
It's very comforting to hear that they "moved fast".
I feel sorry for the homeowner. I doubt the builder will fix those problems. The local inspectors are useless if they pass that mess.
You think the house you are in is done better?
MORE!
Whats the scoop with that diagonal bracing on the interior walls, I've never seen that before, is that structure in an earthquake zone or something that thats a thing?
That is called let-in bracing. It creates that strong triangle shape that helps prevent racking from side to side. I am down in Texas so no earthquakes down here!
@@constructivainspections Interesting, maybe for hurricanes? I'm in PA and even new construction up here doesnt have it.
Maybe because they’re using that cardboard sheething they need to add more rigidity to the house.
@@dorhocyn3 Maybe, but an interior wall!?
@@beachboardfan9544 Texas gets hurricanes and tornadoes. If they build the structural wall early, it is also useful during construction to not have the building collapse before the sheathing is added.
Yea the reason it went up so quickly is they cut a lot of corners, I see it all the time in my area. People just don’t pay attention to the details
Not allowed to tape bottom of windows. Didn't see you mention this.
Wow - what a junker of a house! Everything looks like a hack. Look at all those shiners! LOL
insane dirty in loco
What state do you have your license? Can you do inspection for my up coming new house in March, 2024?
Those toilet flanges are adjustable. The metal ring will spin
A small run like that next to a 14ga low voltage wire isn't that big of a problem. It's twisted pair which helps mitigate that. If that was the service or a water heater line, then yea move it or run shielded.
They do recommend at least 8” separation between 120V & Ethernet wires.
Would be difficult to quantify the impact of this on speed/interference.
Do you travel to do inspections? I need you in south Alabama..
Oh awesome, sounds like a fun trip!
TSX because having a house made of cardboard is a good idea
Why is tub full of water? Does drain work?
pressure testing the drain plug....🤣🤣
if you are having a house built PROTECT YOURSELF hire a 3rd party pro Inspector to do multi point inspections. It will save your ASS. my brother who builds houses inspected a tract home in Texas and his inspection found 3 pages of failures . Buyer be ware!
Oooo.. they TRYING TO be SNEAKY very SNEAKY 3:47
There's another guy who does this from Australia on UA-cam and I like watching you both cause you don't F around and want shit correct which it should be they get paid to do it .
A piss poor job, I would not trust any of the work on that house.
Don’t buy this house. Get out of your contract. This is a disaster in terms of quality control.
Any recommendations for indiana area?
Casey.... We are going to have to give the plumber a pass on the Toilet Flange. That particular design has a free rotating ring that will allow it to be turned into proper orientation. That being said, they are still sh!ty plumbers.
I'll have to check that next time. Thanks for the heads up; the only ones I have ever installed (years ago) were plastic and didn't have that metal ring.
I see a lawsuit in this builder’s future…probably a few haha
when you said A Boot I thought you were practicing your Canadian and you are tri-lingual.....and that saw tooth joint 2X4 was just stupid......someone must have used that as a joke or maybe the builder is testing you 🤣
Cat6 issue probably not a huge deal. 60hz shouldn’t mess with it too much I believe.
It depends on whether the cable was shielded or unshielded. UTP or Unshielded Twisted Pair is far more common, but should ideally stay 18 inches away from electrical. Shielded is much more tolerant. An empty 16 inch stud bay with outlets on the outside is optimal. Also make sure that they don't run parallel along the top plate.
Last time I encountered a UTP wire in the same conduit as the electrical service, it was gigabit era, they were using cat5e and were unable to establish a stable 10mbps (1% of gigabit) connection. The repair (historical building) cost $8,500 to disassemble 2 stories of the exterior of the building then reassemble it.
Shenanigans, lies. 8500 to replace a 20$ wire? Yeah it’s called Wi-Fi and move on, no way in hell anyone would go to any extent like that for a cheap lame low voltage wire lol, you can buy 1000ft of cat6 for like 100$
So painful to watch such crap construction. The workers apparently have zero training. That flashing tape job shows the person is clueless. And what a waste of materials.
Spliced pillars, poor material, impregnated wood indoors... as a swede I am astonished how poor everything looks. This construction in sweden would not pass at all. Just crazy bad.
This is house is a failure
Built by blind people?
With a hammer but no saw...
It’s unbearable seeing what subs do.
Shoddy workmanship and cheap materials.
Been watching a series of these videos and can't believe the crappy construction and lack of attention to very important detail. Is this inexperience, laziness or both. Seems like theres no pride in the job just git it done.
Good grief!!! These vids don’t speak well for the trades.
