For a long time, the Amex Platinum Card has been among the heaviest metal credit cards you could get. But now, other credit card issuers are stepping up their game with more premium credit card offerings, including Capital One (Venture X) and Bank of America (Premium Rewards Elite).
Now, it’s Chase’s turn! They recently updated the Chase Sapphire Reserve to a new metal design. Although I don’t know the exact date when it occurred, I've seen a data point as early as Q2 2023. It’s still a hybrid plastic-metal construction, but there’s definitely more metal now.
In fact, while the Amex Platinum Card and Capital One Venture X both weigh 17g, the new Chase Sapphire Reserve weighs 16g (a nice increase from the older design’s 13g, which is also the same weight as the Chase Sapphire Preferred).

⚠ A Note About the $300 Travel Credit & My Anniversary Date...
1. The anniversary date changed after the product change. It was originally in April, but since I product changed in late January and the current billing cycle ends on Feb. 04, my NEW Anniversary Date was changed to Feb. 05.
2. The $300 Annual Travel Credit will become available after my current statement closes post conversion. Since my statement closes on Feb. 04, the $300 credit can be used starting Feb. 05.
^ Based on this, it seems like the anniversary date will change to 1 day after the billing cycle closes in which you made the conversion. I can't guarantee that's always the case, but it was for me.
Mark! Amex delta plat has a new benefit! Can you confirm pls?! I was a resy $10 a month credit, $10 a month rideshare credit and $150 delta stay credit. Thx

4 months into having the CSR and I’ve really enjoyed it! The 1.5 CPP in the portal has been great for renting cars on our vacations this year. Definitely going to be a year by year card though since I’m paying $625 to have my wife as an AU

I definitely think of the card as a $250 card because I gobble us the $300 travel credit just from using the subway and parking in NYC and BOSTON, which are my 2 home cities.
However, to be honest, it really is just a lounge card for me in 2024. The Logan Sapphire Lounge is a destination. Will be trying on the NY Sapphire lounges in Mar/April.
thinking about doing the same, but my misses is a current free AU on CSP. Going from $95 to $625 is a big change.
I'm also thinking about product changing from the CSP to CSR. i live outside boston and could use the travel credit and have some travel upcoming

Just got my CSR this past December and didn't realize it was the newer version.
I must say, I absolutely LOVE the newer design over the older, especially with the laser engraved logo/text and name. Makes the card feel much more premium. CSR has quickly become my most favorite card to date!

I love knowing I have a redemption floor of 1.5C per point without doing any work really. Or for example, I don't have to fly to Dubai in January just because I have to be flexible because that's when an available redemption exists when in reality I want to go in June. The Chase system is the best hands down. It has the highest floor of any ecosystem.

I am real tempted to pc my CSP to a CSR & run that exact set-up! Already have the Flex & Ink unlimited. I would just need to add the Ink Cash later done the line. I also agree that the elevated portal redemption is super easy!
@@docsays I love the Ink Cash for 5X on cable, internet, and cell phone bill. I don't use cable but having 5X on the other 2 things are pretty sweet. And then any points earned I can pool them together with the CSR for added value. Love it!

Hey Mark. Great video. I have the CSP. When you PC to the CSR, does your card anniversary year stay the same or is it reset? With the $300 annual credit, I wondered if you have a full year to use it or do you retain your CSP anniversary date and you have until then to use it. Thanks!

Mark? Now that American Express has announced that their a refresh coming in 2024, will you be creating a video discussion what you think the changes will “possibly” look like, along with your strategies on if you’ll keep certain credit cards, would you downgrade a card (if that option is available), or would you look to possibly cancel an AmEx card if you own one that was changing. It could be based on hypothetical scenarios too. I’m just asking for a friend. Thank you and keep up the great work you’re doing!
No plans for that. There are tons of Amex cards outside of the U.S., so their announcement that "40" will be refreshed doesn't mean those are all U.S. cards. And with 0 data or insight, I don't plan to make a speculation video (right now) since I have no direction to go off of. Perhaps I'll reconsider if more info gets released. Meanwhile, I base my strategy on what is real 😁

I just got mine last week. I would have liked the visa infinite logo on the front. I don't know yet my statement date since I just got it last week. Just the due date. Is there a way to know my statement date before it's posted?

We love our CSR! However, our lovely baby is due in March and we’re not sure how much traveling we’ll be doing in the next year even though we love the card. Our card anniversary is in May so the AF + AU fee will be forthcoming. Do you think Chase would give any type of retention bonus to offset the AF upon asking? My wife has this and 2 other chase cards with high limits plus a business account for our rental property business, so I believe Chase loves her and may grant it if they offer it lol. The other option would be to downgrade to the CSP or another Freedom Flex and wait out the next sub, as I think we’ll be heading into our 3rd year of ownership after May.
You're smart to consider your expenses with a baby on the way 💯 Chase may give retention offers on occasion, but historically they've been underwhelming (e.g. small statement credit). Definitely worth a call. However, more meaningful cost cutting will come in the form of a downgrade.
The change definitely happened after April 2023. I got mine in April 2023. My card looks exactly like the new one you showed, design images and all. However, it is somewhat very bendable compared to the Amex Platinum.
It may have been 2 phases. Design first, then more metal later. I think a family member of mine had the new design with the same construction at one point.

1 month into the CSR and I've enjoyed the card! Easily hit the SUB with a $4k long-haul business-class airfare purchase, which triggered the $300 travel credit as well. Lyft Pink is super useful to me, and I have made use of the Doordash & Instacart credits as well!
I am not sure if I will keep the card or downgrade to the CSP after the Lyft Pink discounted membership expires in Year 3 (it is free in the first 2 years, $99 in Year 3), but it is very useful to me now!

Got the new design a few months ago and love it. Has anyone gotten a new Freedom Unlimited? Do they still have raised lettering? I ask because chase sent me a new business debit card and it didn’t have raised lettering on it.

I'm not eligible for the welcome offer. You need to wait 48 months from the last Sapphire-branded bonus you got. My last Sapphire bonus was ~ 22 months years ago. I'm also well above the 5/24 Rule.
Was just told by a rep at Chase that there is no redesign, no heavier metal or any changes whatsoever. Strange because I see it in your hand! I wonder how I can get my hands on this mystery card!

Can confirm: Replacement card arrived and it is in fact slightly heavier, noticeably more rigid and overall feels more premium. But does it complete with the Amex Plat? No.
How long before you get the annual fee hit first statement or second statement?
Not sure. It's possible that it may vary from one person to another based on when their billing cycle started.

I wouldn't burn the 5/24 spot and lock myself out of the Sapphire bonus for 2 years for 60k. Not when it's been as high as 100k.

I had my CSR few years back as I have new design but no engraving of “Sapphire Reserve” and still 13g. My renewal is 11/24, so I hope I can get upgrade one 😊.

No, you'll keep the miles. Miles earned from your AA MileUp card are not stored on your card. Rather, they're sent to your AA account itself.

Impressive! Cards don't have a specific limit given to everyone. They vary based on credit score, debt levels, payment history, income, and more.

I think so too 👍 If I recall correctly, a family member of mine had the new design awhile back (perhaps 2021 or earlier), but it had the same construction as the original CSR. The heavier construction definitely came later on (likely 2023).

It varies, but it doesn't bother me if exposed because those 3-4 digits have no meaning apart from the account 15-16 digit account number.

Looks plain like Venture X, Amex is still the best design, and Bilt.
Amex is niche imo, their cards stand out even the plastic ones. Amex Green looks like no other card out there, of course Amex Gold and Amex Platinum stand out! I was impressed with my Amex Business Plum card as well. ✊
It's a nice improvement, but yes, the Amex Platinum Card still has a better overall design to my eye.

The CSR is a Visa Infinite card, and those typically require a minimum line of $10K.
