I’ve been using the first version of the Biolite for over 13 years. Its super cool how this works, I looked at the patents and it uses a thermo electric generator (TEG) also known as a peltier cooler which creates either electricity from a heat differential on either side or creates a heat differential on either side from electricity, the vent you see is the cold side and the probe you see above the fire conducts heat to the hot side, the fan provides two purposes, it draws air through the cool side and also feeds air to the hot side.

Using waste heat from a fire is pretty clever. Like ive gone camping with a generator before but we also had a big fire going pretty much 24/7. I like it, I’m guessing it’s possible to use as a camping stove as well, which makes it perfect for night camping (obv solar is often better in the day), you got the light, warmth, and cooking potential of a fire plus the ability to power electrical items. Great idea! If it works properly.

Those kind of chargers were used as the power source for radios back in (50's to 70's) in rural areas where there's no electricity. They ran on kerosene instead wood.
