- Welcome to Atop the Fourth Wall, where bad comics burn. In this episode, Linkara looks at a steampunk retelling of Star Wars!

ORIGINAL INFO: A long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away… actually, that works pretty well in this context, too.
RUMINATIONS: This was a bit of an odd duck for a Patreon review. Not the choice of what to review, but the lengths gone for it, seeing as the patron also got Fred Perry to draw up the title card for the episode... and I'm pretty sure he sent a whole bunch of other Fred Perry material my way that I have yet to read because I have bins and bins of comics. I could be confusing them with someone else in that regard, but they WERE contacting me a lot about the review and promoting it and, as I said, getting Fred Perry to do the artwork, which was pretty damn spiffy.
"How can a Stormtrooper miss with something like that?"
They are Stormtroopers. They can't aim.
Blunderbusses were primitive shotguns. And shotguns aren't known for their accuracy with their typical ammo (tiny ball bearings, or BBs).
i will give you one better there stormtroopers not mandalorians
Andros dragoon True. Although guys in Mandalorian armour appear badass but seem to get their asses kicked alot.
because everybody has a boner for the force
@@Ice-Climber And then Disney redeemed them lol
Well Linkara, you had a Fred Perry artwork AND you got to ride a bear who shoots guns. You can cross that out of your bucket list.
The Death Blimp?! **shakes his head** So, many Death Zeppelin jokes that could have been used.....
arent all blimps just giant zeppelins of death and hazardous ?
Dead Zeppelin
The difference between a blimp and a zeppelin is that a zeppelin has a ridged frame and a blimp is basically a giant balloon.
I was thinking a led zeppelin reference.
I mean, Plant, Page, and Jones are all still alive, so... we just have to wait a few more years before we hire the necromancer.
“Millennium Mouse” makes way too much sense now
"My hair! I SHOT MY HAIR!" Nice touch that she had her head bandaged later...funny Spaceballs reference that it was, it DID cause a little damage.
OrangeRangerVideos yeah that's lasers for you
Oh my god. I just realized what "other" kind of work I remember Fred Perry for.
*Huehuehue.*
Dizzy Doom get feeling both heads, yeah.
oh my god...
Please don't.
@@Archon3960 Too late. *4 years too late.*
Sherlock Ninja?
"Isn't that like calling him 'king emperor'?" Well, in Fullmetal Alchemist there is a character called Fuhrer King Bradley. Admittedly King is his first name, not his title, but you get the idea.
On the Lord Baron thing: In this comic, Baron actually seems to be a last name, but some authors do actually do that kind of thing to make characters sound more menacing and totalitarian. For example, in Mistborn and Warbreaker (both by Brandon Sanderson), there are characters with the titles Lord Ruler and God King respectively. I kind of like it.
"Show that I sometimes imply that I hate doing"
Well, now I'm disillusioned
Why these sort of steampunk comics aren't more common is beyond me
Because they're rarely done right. As Reginald Pikedevant points out, they usually "just glue some gears on it and call it steampunk." Check out Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure and Steampunk Goldilocks for examples...
+ZC-Infinity note the use of these. Comics of this type of steampunk.
Sir JeraldFancystache plus I'm under the impression that steampunk is considered "out" at the moment
Hannah Fritzinfger shame
Unfortunately, they tend to be as badly written as this one
I like how you gently placed the comic down because it doesn't suck.
"We have a 50s cafe, but no characters talking like pirates?"
Hondo Ohnaka, 2016!Linkara. Hondo Ohnaka.
Man, really hope you catch up on everything that's been happening on TV...someday...some years...some centuries later...oof.
From now on I'm calling Luke Schrodinger's Jedi
I personally think Death Zeppelin sounds much cooler than Death Blimp
I thought of the rock band before I thought of the airship
In Regards to Ruminations: Yeah, Linkara, that was me. I got Fred to draw and I sent you all kinds of Fred Perry comics. I knew you're not a fan of Gold Digger but he's done a lot more stuff.
Also, I met Stan Lee and Frank Miller last weekend at MegaCon. Stan is always a gem and Frank was a lot different from what I expected.
And thank you again for sending 'em my way! Just was above and beyond the call of duty on it, is all. XD
What can I say? You're awesome. If only your rewards had 'watch' options. I would jump onto the Patreon Sponsor Review Bandwagon again.
Besides that though, I do hope life is treating you well. I finally got the Indiegogo Movie Sponsor rewards a couple of months back and they're great.
Soooooooooooooooooooo.... Who is your LEAST favorite Incarnation of the Doctor?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! WHO are your top 6 Favorite Incarnations of the Doctor, and WHO are your top 6 LEAST Favorite Incarnations of the Doctor?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!? How do you feel about the War Doctor?!?!?!?!?!
How's Frank? Still looking like a Fishman after a steroid overdose?
More white to his hair now than I had ever expected, particularly in his beard. Being around him gives you the sensation of being behind a set of bars with a caged tiger.
However, I did quickly get on Frank's good side. I had hand sanitizer on me and started washing my hands before I went up. He REALLY appreciated that.
Also, from what I saw from others... NEVER compliment the man on his works. He pretty much abandons the works once they're done. For him, it's the process of creation he actually cares about. Once he's done with a project it's pretty much orphaned. So to be safe, just give him a general thanks for his contributions to comics.
Stan was much, MUCH more of a pleasure to meet.
"Steam Wars"
Sounds like what I go through every time there's a Steam Summer Sale.......wait, what month is it?
OH SHI-!
Too bad it has started sucking balls for the past two years.
Fancy/Snooty C3PO is awesome, and I love that the princess is the true hero of the story in this one. I wish they'd make a whole proper series based around this cause it looks like it has a lot of underutilized potential.
It's like we switched 3PO for HK-47 xD
so a new steam wars book came out for free comic day this year...and i grabbed it mistaking it for an actual star wars comic.
The Duchess reminds me of Pidge from the new Voltron
That's a compliment in my book. x)
Edit: She reminds me of Haru from Persona 5 now that I think about it.
?
The name Hegemonic Crux is a reference to the antagonist faction in the old PC game Star Control 3, an RPG that has elements of 4x as well as visceral spaceship combat. It has some good writing, though it isn't nearly as good as its predecessor, Star Control II, one of the absolute best PC RPGs of the 90s. (There was a 3D0 port of SC2 as well.) The writing was worse, and the ship-to-ship combat was poorly balanced and just didn't control as well, thanks to using 3D models instead of the previous 2D models.
The name is a rather wordy way of describing a group that wants to express the idea that "We are awesome, everything revolves around us".
Steam Wars should have it's own movie franchise, or at least a tv or streaming series whichever comes first!
Can't wait to see their Force Awakens Parody with Lord Baron's Grandson, & Apprentice as New Characters.
You gotta love, how Linkara makes fun of Lord Baron's Name.
Okay, so I"m sure no one will read this but, it's bothers me no one pointed it out. Star Wars: Luke. Steam Wars: Bo. THEY MADE A DUKES OF HAZARD REFERENCE. I"m not sure if I'm impressed or if it pains me...
This can't be a Fred Perry comic. Where's all the lowkey femdom and giant Amazonian women?
Also hentai.
DeadBoneJones I presume his editor slapped his hand a few times. "That's why you make those Momeye comics online dammit! Leave it out of this!"
Hey, at least he has more variety than Frank Miller! xD
Tfw you realize Fred Perry is just William Moulton Marston.
thats a lie
Nice touch gently placing down the comic instead of slapping it down like you usually do. Just goes to show you how damn good the comic is.
A Gurren Lagann reference.
Sir I am going unsubscribe just so I can subscribe to you again.
JoJo, take a shower?
+Coec_15324 What?
Go Go, build a tower?
Show Show, plant a flower?
I CAN'T STOP!
...
Blow Blow, from tornadoes we cower?
Quantum Mechanics and seeing possible future positions otherwise unseen by others. So...Schrodinger's Jedi? You know, that's actually pretty cool, if a little complicated.
On the facetious "Quantum mechanics is my favorite part of steampunk" remark, Bioshock Infinite had a lot of quantum wackiness going on and that game displayed many hallmarks of a steampunk setting.
10:17 atleast we have Hondo
5:20 Did they just make a Starchaser reference...? I don't know if I'm more surprised that someone's actually seen that movie or that they thought it quotable...
5:03 they made a Thundercats reference there, too
😰Let's just hope they don't use a reference to the scene from Starchaser where Dag reprograms the fem-bot via her a-s circuitry.
I want a Steam Wars movie.
6:13 - 6:22 Otis B. Driftwood: "How could I, being born of such uh... conventional stock, arrive a leader of the rebellion? An escapist from a conformist world, destined to find happiness only in that which cannot be explained??"
I liked this break of good comics. Honestly I'm probably going to buy a few of the comics you talked about. They look awesome
You mean we don't have to like the same things? FREEDOM! BTW that's not lord baron Kaito Kumon is the real Lord Baron. You know that your story is nuts when Bioshock Infinite is presenting Quantum Mechanics in a more plausible way.
"BANANA BANANA BANANA?"
"BARON DA!"
Yes, the science was about as screwy as most comics, though steampunk stuff is always about one step from magic anyway (there is reason no one flies coal powered aircraft in the real world), so I guess it is par for the course. (Actually, more bizarre is the magic coal that makes steam engines silent. How does that work?)
Man I love how meta this opening was
I want to see the live action movie version of this.
With Disney's recent output, I wouldn't be surprised if they resorted to that.
@@kimifw58 Would an animated movie be better? Not sure how easily some of the quantum stuff could be pulled off in Live action (even with a disney budget)
Bear Chewy is the fucking cutest thing
so imoen becomes a mix of haru from persona 5 in terms of looks but has raiper versions of Vergil from dmc weapons.
I approve.
Their Luke equivalent seems more like Obi-Wan to me.
Wait, is K2SO from Rogue One inspired by CL335 from these comics?
Considering this review came out even before The Force Awakens, it’s more likely the other way around.
Millennium Mouse...and the great Linkara has once again predicted the future
Dang, someone make an entire comic series of this please!!
I never wondered what the Steampunk Star Wars universe would look like. Well, now I know.
Used to play with the Artist/writer on this comic in FFXI back in the far flung past of 2007. :D He wasn't around much, often very busy and didn't get to play much. But his linkshell We Say Hurray was where i met many of my longtime friends online.
Lord Baron? So what, did he originally come from Sequin Land or something?
ok, it took me this long to realize who the artist is its Fred perry XD guy's a wild bastard
This is pretty cool! I would like to see what a steampunk version of Star Trek would look like!
Actually There is Another Antarctic Press Comic Called Airship Enterprise
8:28 what is that from?
edit i know its from kickassia, i miss the crossovers
10:14 there's Hondo Ohnaka from clone wars
thank you, linkara, this episode inspired me to check this comic out!!!
Am I the only one that likes C3PO?
No
yes
Are you referring to him in the movies or in other media?
me too
He's annoying, but not annoying enough to be unlikable
2:20 With the Star Wars music and this image. It's epic as hell.
I have some more names to make fun of Lord Baron for your review of Steam wars Episode 5 Linkara. You can mix them up if you like. Anyway, here they are: Csar Sheikh, Emir Sultan, Chief Khan, Mayor Pharaoh, Sapa Ajaw, Führer Overlord, Prince Count, Chairman Councilman, and Premier Minister.
20th Century Fox = a pun of Star Wars' Former Owner.
it should have been the "Decade Rat".
stealth zeppelins? what do people just stop looking up now?
I am trying to figure out how it is the coal that makes them silent. I thought most of the noise form steam engines came from all the metal bits, not the burning of the coal.
Hate to say it but Perry and Adam Warren were the most underrated western animu artist of the early 90's when all you had was sailor moon, manga entertainment and Central Park Media...truly a dark times....
8:42 That's very clever.
It seems like a certain dictator “Admiral General Aberdeen” didn’t get the message about why names like “Lord Baron” don’t work as titles.
PREMIER SHAH! That's one name I Haven't thought of for him.
I'm actually really interested in this! I saw a free comic book day issue of this series about 2 years ago but I never got it. I'm going to see if I can find a copy somewhere. Thank you, Linkara!
I love this art style it's like American anime ??? How do you catigory it
lookin badass on the title card, Linkara
So her special skill that allowed her to kill darth vader was a mixture of being short and dumb luck
The Luke stand-in is named Bo, and had an Uncle Jessi. Dukes of Hazzard Reference. Also, would that make Jessi the Obi-Wan equivalent?
Damn shame this hasn't been expanded into other stories, because man oh man these characters, their world and its mechanics are so damn interesting and ripe for exploration.
If you want a pirate in star wars, watch clone wars, and get ready for the glory that is Hondo Ohnaka
Actually linkara that electron repulsion thing is right. electrons repel each other so nothing ever really touches. But the gap is so small it doesn't really matter.
That teleportation combat reminds me of that 20xx melee meme
I have not watched an episode of ThunderCats but I understood that reference.
steam wars the force awakens .
I feel like Duke Xenobia is a reference to Bail Organa, but traitorous. I've read a fanfic in which Organa was portrayed as a traitor.
Wait I'm kinda confused by the Quantum Superpositioning. If it only allows one to travel to potential positions, by the infinite number of parallel worlds, doesn't mean that he can pretty much teleport anywhere?
...This actually sounds a lot cooler than the current canon Star Wars....
I got the first issue at Free Comic Book Day a couple years ago and honestly I like it quite a bit.
That is one kickass title card. I think I'd buy this if it were a poster.
I got this book based entirely on your review of it. It just looked so fun. It is, although the copy I got had really poor glue holding it together. It's okay now, but still a little wonky
I *thought* electron cloud repulsion actually was how "touching things" worked, but now that I'm trying to look it up, I can't find anything.
I want a Steam Wars movie now.
Do you think "Lord Baron" is meant to be a reference to "Prince Barin" from Flash Gordon?
Is turning Luke into Bo a Dukes of Hazard joke?
ah nuts, i was hoping Linkara would have caught the thundercats reference when he said "Samoflange"
Beauregard Baron, Bo Duke, Luke Duke. Ah get get it
is that Curtis Arnot doing the narration for the Mid Summer's Nightmare trailer?
Wait lord baron?
The new shantae game is weird
Chalmers mistaken the title to be Steam hams.
To be honest I haven't watched in a while due to most of the episodes uploaded as of recent not interesting me but when I saw the title card for this one I just had to click on the video because I was dieing to know why Linkara was riding a bear! XD
Ok, I don't mind Star Wars having a Steam punk coat of paint what with things like airships, zeppelin's clockwork robots, blunderbuss's or the "storm foils" essentially rapiers with an electric current running though it, or even different names for the characters, but in some cases the names feel TOO different, hegemonic crux, quantum dragoon, where do the come up with this stuff? Yes you can make an argument for jedi sounding strange but that sounds uniquely alien
Lord Baron still doesn't nearly as weird as Fuhrer King
5:42 i like to think that his name is a Kamen Rider Gaim reference with the final villain in Gaim being... well, Lord Baron
Rao Rao fight the power?
God damn that physically hurts!
I'm super pissed that I can't find a copy of the trade for less than a hundred bucks.
Looking at the cover, I can see this was made for me.
What does this have to do with the Larry Blamire paintings?
FYI, Lewis - Baron is a surname. See: Sandy Baron as an example.
So the Bo name thing is just a big dukes of hazzard reference.
This interests me more than Star Wars. Why can’t this be the famous one?
Oh boy, so Lord Baron you say, ok... one more for the collection of titles created by people with not idea how they work :D... There are already Lord Marshal ( from Riddick) and Fuhrer President (Fullmetal Alchemist). :D
Well technically it worked here as Baron was his name
Actually, the electron cloud thing is correct, if rather a pedantic point.
at 5:25 I second this statement we need a droid like this in star wars!
